💯 Critic/Audience Score 'Whalefall' Review Thread

I will continue to update this post as reviews come in.

Rotten Tomatoes: Fresh

Critics Consensus: N/A

Critics Score Number of Reviews Average of Rated Reviews
All Critics 78% 55 6.80/10
Top Critics 71% 14

Metacritic: 62 (23 Reviews)

Sample Reviews:

Odie Henderson, Boston Globe 2/4 - All movies are manipulative in one way or another, but the script, by Kraus and director Brian Duffield, is so blatantly stalking your emotions that the dramatic scenes feel less believable than the scenes inside the whale.

Alison Foreman, IndieWire B- - Even when the metaphor is painfully on the nose, the film’s most disturbing images are more than their dramatic limitations and a whale is still an astonishing place to spend a movie.

Simon Crook, Empire Magazine 4/5 - Frightening, thrilling, bold and brutal, this one-location survival horror is a genuine one-off and the most surreal blockbuster in years.

Danny Leigh, Financial Times 3/5 - Having set up that remarkable What If?, the film doesn’t stint on follow-through, in often arresting visual detail.

Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph (UK) 3/5 - This outlandishly gross, fitfully gripping survival thriller is probably best watched on an empty stomach (or one lined with a beer or two) -- otherwise there’s a high chance you’d revisit your lunch before it’s over.

Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail - An absurdly entertaining mix of family melodrama, survivalist thriller, and exceptionally gooey horror flick.

Jacob Oller, AV Club C - A mutant sea monster, one that’s half gross-out B-movie and half flashback-heavy emotional flotsam.

Nick Schager, The Daily Beast - A biblical calamity that plays out in giddily squishy and stifling fashion, Brian Duffield’s film is all about inducing intense squirms, and on that basis, it proves amusing genre pulp.

Owen Gleiberman, Variety - The movie comes closer to doing for whales what “Howard the Duck” did for barnyard superheroes -- it makes you never want to see one of them again.

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter - As eye-rollingly dumb as it is, this is a drama in the business of healing, of nature in all its savage nobility soothing wounds and mending bonds. Or something.

William Bibbiani, TheWrap - Nobody in their right mind would say anything that happens in ‘Whalefall’ is plausible, but the implausibility is inherent to the premise and the premise is rad as hell. Brian Duffield is 100% committed to the bit, which makes ‘Whalefall’ a wild ride.

Zachary Lee, RogerEbert.com 3.5/4 - It isn’t afraid to play fast and loose with form and structure, creating a mind-bending joyride that drags you to uncharted cinematic depths.

Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence B - Whalefall is without question the best movie I've ever seen about someone being swallowed by a whale. And beyond its achievements within that very specific subgenre, it manages to deliver a cathartic experience that's very human, even relatable.

Rocco T. Thompson, Slant Magazine 3/4 - It builds its what-ifs from a foundation of fact to better support its more poetic strains as it reaches its heart-swelling climax.

Worldwide r/BoxOffice Long Range Forecast: 'Ebenezer', 'How to Rob a Bank', and 'Ghost Soldier'

Before you comment, read these two rules:

1. Please provide specific numbers for your predictions. Don't do things like "It'll make less than this or that" or "double this movie or half this movie". We want a real prediction in concrete figures.

2. Given that a lot of parent comments do not even bother to give predictions, we are establishing a new rule. The parent comment must provide a prediction with specific numbers. The rest of the replies to the comment do not have to make a prediction, but the parent comment absolutely has to. Any parent comment without a prediction will be eliminated.

Welcome to the newest edition of r/BoxOffice Long Range Forecast.

We're making long range predictions for films, 4 weeks out from their premieres. You will predict the opening weekend, domestic total and worldwide gross of these films. These predictions will be open for 48 hours and the results will be polled to form a consensus and posted the next week.

So let's meet the three films for the week and analyze each pro and con.

Ebenezer

The film is directed by Ti West (the X trilogy) from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern. Based on the 1843 novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the film stars Johnny Depp, Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen. Set in early Victorian London, it follows the miserly businessman Ebenezer Scrooge as he is forced through visions of the past, present, and future during a supernatural journey toward a chance at redemption.

How to Rob a Bank

The film is directed by David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train, The Fall Guy) from a screenplay by Mark Bianculli. It stars Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz, Anna Sawai, Rhenzy Feliz, Pete Davidson, and John C. Reilly. A crew of bank robbers have been using social media to document heists that they have pulled off, leading to pursuit from the police.

Ghost Soldier

The film is directed by William Eubank (Underwater) and written by Chris Papasadero. It stars Jim Caviezel, Olivia Thirlby, Beau Knapp, Garret Dillahunt, and Shea Whigham. It follows Henry "Fitz" Fitzgerald, a former US Army Special Forces Green Beret and advanced weapon systems engineer living a quiet, off-the-grid life in Wyoming. He is forced to return when an asset management company employs corrupt law enforcement officers and foreign agents to seize vast swaths of ranch land and water for their own self gains.

Now that you met this week's new releases, let's look at some pros and cons.

PROS

  • Ebenezer is banking pretty hard on its lead star, Johnny Depp. Depp's career was severely impacted after 2018 due to a series of lawsuits and scandals, and this film is his first big studio release in 8 years, so Paramount is clearly relying on his fanbase to support the film. A Christmas Carol is one of the most popular stories ever told; everyone knows who Scrooge is and what his journey is, and that familiarity can translate to curiosity. Ti West is an inspiring choice for a film like this, given the success of the X trilogy (even if MaXXXine didn't meet expectations). As it's a Christmas story, this is a film that can leg out pretty well throughout the season, which also includes Thanksgiving (it's not unusual for Christmas films to get a 4x multiplier, or even a 5x multiplier). It was reported by Puck News that Paramount screened a first cut of the film, and it received some pretty great test scores. And even if the film fails domestically, Depp's films are usually overseas-heavy, so those markets could save it from a weak performance.

  • David Leitch has been a very solid action director, with his films usually earning very good reviews and box office receipts (The Fall Guy only failed the latter). Amazon hopes that the mix of action and comedy can make for another success at the box office, especially if Street Fighter fails to deliver the month prior.

  • Ghost Soldier is aiming to attract the older demographic that doesn't rush out to watch a film as soon as possible. Caviezel also is coming off the massive success of Sound of Freedom, which became one of the biggest sleeper hits of the past years.

CONS

  • Will Ebenezer truly benefit from banking on Depp and his return to big studios? Depp was one of the biggest stars in the world in the 2000s, but that came with an asterisk afterwards. Since 2010, the number of hits decreased, thanks to the colossal disasters of Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger, Transcendence, Mortdecai, Alice Through the Looking Glass, etc. It would've helped if any of them were good, but a lot of his projects have also earned negative responses, and it led many to question if he truly has any box office power left. Add to the fact that he has had a very negative coverage in the media, thanks to his legal issues. Yes, he has had a lot of public support, but is that really gonna translate to ticket sales? Just like familiarity with the premise can be a selling point, it can also be its own disadvantage: are audiences excited to watch another Christmas Carol adaptation after the hundreds of other adaptations available? It doesn't help that nothing in the trailers suggest this is offering anything new, besides Depp's shtick (which was one of the reasons why his projects were flatlining over the past years). Test audience scores were great, but it remains to be seen if casuals will be as interested as Depp's fanbase.

  • Amazon hasn't pushed heavily the film; even though it's still a month away, it still feels like buzz is very low. As mentioned, Leitch's films are often well-received, but The Fall Guy was not successful enough at the box office. Coupled with a big lack of star power (none of the actors are draws or very popular names, even if they're part of popular IPs), it'd be a surprise if the film made almost as much as that film. Or even half.

  • Ghost Soldier looks like your generic direct-to-DVD soldier story. Except it's getting a wide release in theaters. Caviezel might have been part of Sound of Freedom, but that doesn't neccessarily make him a draw for anything. And even if How to Rob a Bank is not expected to do much, it's strange on Sony's behalf that they're opening another action film opposite it.

And here's the past results.

đŸŽŸïž Pre-Sales TheFlatLannister on BOT: Street Fighter had a huge T-2 increase. At MTC3, it is now ~29% behind Mortal Kombat previews. Good pace is there so I am at $30M OW, with $35M OW as a possibility. Overall Thur-Sun is now matching Mortal Kombat OW at TC3%wise (mostly due to Sunday being 53% ahead of MK)

Domestic Box Office Watch - an alternative to The Numbers and Box office Mojo

Thumbnail
gallery
67 Upvotes

6 months ago, I started working on a new box office site (BoxOfficeWatch) as an alternative to The Numbers and Box office Mojo. I wanted to create something more visually appealing (I use those sites a lot, but the design feels super dated to me), works better on mobile, and has more features. We've come a long way from that initial site (original post is here), and the last month or so has been spent polishing the UI across the whole site to make it even easier to use.

The site now has:
- Over 5000 movie pages with day by day totals for domestic and worldwide grosses, plus a snapshot of the reviews from all major sources all in one view
- Prediction models for each new releases of how much they'll make based on the opening weekend and audience scores/reviews
- Comparison feature - compare any 2,3, or 4 films
- Actor, director, studio and franchise pages
- Create a free account, choose your profile banner image, connect your Letterboxd, and rate any film you see
- Play predict the weekend and top the leaderboard against other players
- Predict a new releases' final domestic total and top the leaderboard
- See the daily, weekend and yearly charts (updated daily)
- A release schedule with opening weekend tracking
- A records page with all major records
- Weekend preview and recap articles
- A web app version that you can add to your phone screen

You can check it out at boxofficewatch.com.

Let me know what else you want to see as I continue adding new features - we've largely built this together over 6 months as you ask for more features - keep the suggestions coming!

💯 Critic/Audience Score 'You Can See Everything' Review Thread

1.1k Upvotes

I will continue to update this post as reviews come in.

Rotten Tomatoes: Fresh

Critics Consensus: N/A

Critics Score Number of Reviews Average of Rated Reviews
All Critics 100% 43 9.50/10
Top Critics 100% 16

Metacritic: 97 (21 Reviews)

Sample Reviews:

Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic 5/5 - You’ve seen elements of “You Can See Everything” in documentaries before. But you’ve never seen them combined like this. It’s a true original.

Cary Darling, Houston Chronicle 5/5 - "You Can See Everything" throws into sharp relief audience's expectations while skewering the entire idea of the traditional documentary and its contemporary off-shoot, reality TV.

Tim Grierson, Screen International - Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s extraordinary documentary soon goes in unexpected directions, becoming an uneasy treatise on love, reality television, and the ways filmmakers try (and often fail) to capture ’real’ life.

Monica Castillo, AV Club A- - Like Welles used his camera to play tricks on audiences some 50 years ago, Fielder and Oppenheim use their film to shake up their audience’s understanding of how we believe one another.

Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence A - The film is more than an extension of Fielder’s blending comedy and documentary with shows like The Rehearsal — it’s an evolution upon it. It asks everyone involved to look at themselves, and face the difference between perception and reality.

Marshall Shaffer, Slant Magazine 3.5/4 - You Can See Everything innovatively probes this gray area between the fabulations made about Elizabeth Holmes and those made by her.

David Fear, Rolling Stone - You will likely have no idea what you have just seen, besides that it's simply, unabashedly, unashamedly brilliant.

Alison Willmore, New York Magazine/Vulture - In You Can See Everything, the closer we get to her, the less knowable she is — a set of pointillist dots in the shape of a person.

Kristy Puchko, Mashable - You Can See Everything is a masterwork of interrogation, not only of the whole Holmes situation but of documentary as a form itself.

Adrian Horton, Guardian 5/5 - There is something extremely satisfying in watching Fielder’s sharp angles tangle with Holmes’s disposition of guileless warmth, a strange and compelling chemistry building within a reality distortion field.

Nick Schager, The Daily Beast - Not just the film of the year—it’s a documentary that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the form’s all-time greats.

Kyle Smith, Wall Street Journal - With co-director Lance Oppenheim, Mr. Fielder gets around the restrictions on his access to the locked-up Ms. Holmes with his customary hilarious meta-narrative brilliance.

Tomris Laffly, RogerEbert.com 4/4 - The significance of 'You Can See Everything' is clear as a film that might advance a new cinematic language in the mainstream non-fiction sphere.

Angie Han, The Hollywood Reporter - What begins as a fascinatingly intimate portrait of a deluded or disingenuous scammer reveals as something even wilder, more ambitious and less predictable, until we’re left to ponder what value a personal truth has at all.

Cortlyn Kelly, IndieWire A - For how disquieting it is, the film never goes too long without forcing a laugh.

Owen Gleiberman, Variety - It’s a one-of-a-kind reality-TV-as-hangout-movie psychodrama circus. Yet it’s been made with a spirit of true inquiry, driven by Fielder’s acidly quizzical personality, and it gets its hooks in you.

SYNOPSIS:

Thirty-four days before she’s sent to prison, notorious Silicon Valley founder Elizabeth Holmes invites a skeptical film crew to document her every move. What begins as an intimate portrait of an enigmatic felon becomes a mind-bending three-year journey into the abyss. From boundary-pushing directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim comes You Can See Everything.

✍ Original Analysis Dune 3 BO prediction

Post image
11 Upvotes

With Dune 3 dropping in two months and Avengers Doomsday arriving around the same time, how do you think things will play out at the box office?

Personally, I think both will do really well.
Doomsday has the potential to hit $2.5–3 billion if it’s good, and I can see Dune 3 comfortably clearing $1 billion.

A lot of people on this sub seem to downplay Dune’s potential by talking about earlier films: “Part One only made $400 million” or “Part Two only made $700 million.” But I think that overlooks how much the fanbase has grown. It feels like it’s doubled, even tripled, which is why I expect Part Three to comfortably outperform Part Two.

We’ve already seen films this year break records and blow past expectations. How many people genuinely predicted The Odyssey would be sitting at $1.8 billion right now a lot of people months ago were saying the odyssey wouldnt even break 500M now lookđŸ€Ł

Worldwide Will Clayface Being Extremely Graphic Hurt or Help Box-Office?

People who have seen Clayface had words to share that I can't quote, because this sub forbids posting early reactions.

I was taken aback a bit. It seems that they went full Horror and full gore, not just the flavour of genre Comic Book films usually have (with people calling Captain America: Winter Soldier a political thriller when it culminates with superhumans punching each other abord a flying battleship, something that's not really what happens in All the President's Men).

I had not realised that it's actually disturbing and hard to watch.

Do you think that this will hurt the film, being too intense for the regular Comic Book audience? Or will it propel it, with the fans of hard Horror flocking to it?

I personally cancelled my ticket. I was curious about it, but I was afraid it could make me physically ill. But I am not a horror person and not a good sample or example. Terrifier thrived on extremes.

My take is that this will create controversy and a lot of people might be curious. On the other hand, Body Horror doesn't perform that well, and even a film like The Substance can't crack over 100M worldwide. I feel a bit better than The Substance is where it lands.
