Did anyone else notice the somber look on Hulk’s face when Peter says he’s his friend? I feel like that’s tying into the “hulk knows Peter but banner forgot”

That imagery of Hulk being pulled down by the wreckage of his own rampage...that's a visual metaphor for the whole character.

u/SkimGaming Jul 31 '26

well, it goes even further because he's purposely letting go after seeing himself and realizing what he is at that moment.

It's probably the most chracter development we've gotten from Hulk yet.

31

u/wardengorri Captain America (Cap 2) Aug 05 '26

I'm actually kind of glad there wasn't dialogue in that. From his look at Peter, seeing himself in the mirror, then the weight of the webbed debris, and finally letting himself fall said so much visually than any lines could, so good!

Except I don't think (non-prof) Hulk ever met Spider-Man in the MCU.

u/jdylopa2 Jul 31 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

That’s not true, didn’t they meet in that Coke commercial?

Edit: You’re telling me there’s a Spider-Man and an Ant-Man?!

17

u/Instant_Cube Jul 31 '26

That was Ant-Man I'm pretty sure

6

u/Troghen Aug 02 '26

That was Ant-Man, that commercial was a super bowl ad that came out before Civil War. We hadn't even seen MCU Spider-Man yet.

Also not sure I'd consider a commercial to be cannon anyway lol

u/Trvr_MKA Jul 31 '26

Funeral

22

u/Tengobeats Jul 31 '26

Didn’t they meet in the beginning of Infinity War, when they were battling the Black Order in New York

52

u/falconfoxbear Jul 31 '26

Bruce met him, not the Hulk.

31

u/Jaychel31 Jul 31 '26

If hulk has Bruce’s memories (no idea if he does) then it would make sense

28

u/Mister-Distance-6698 Jul 31 '26

Presumably Natasha being able to talk Hulk down implies Hulk knows what happens when Bruce is in control I guess.

10

u/neoblackdragon Aug 01 '26

They know because they share the same brain but the memories are all jumbled up.

Banner has to recall from Hulks rage filled mind where everything is firing.

Hulk was never out long enough to remember until Ragnarok.

After that the next time is Professor Hulk and Banner clearly remembers that.

14

u/PurePerfection_ Aug 01 '26

In Ragnarok, after he changed back into Bruce, he and Valkyrie kept bantering about how it felt like they knew each other. So Bruce retains at least some faint memory of people he gets close to as Hulk. It might work the other way around, too. Hulk did seem to recognize Betty back when it was Ed Norton as Hulk, too, if that counts.

9

u/neoblackdragon Aug 01 '26

They barely met. Like how I met the cashier who took my order.

Not enough to call them my friend.

3

u/awkward2amazing Captain America (Captain America 2) Aug 01 '26

But if Banner knows then Hulk would have know too, back in IW.

3

u/latestwonder Aug 08 '26

I think we should be inferring that some of these characters know each other from things that happened off screen, at this point of the MCU if the story calls for it. It's implied Spiderman had met Yelena a few times before to know to go for her for help, but we didn't see those first meetings .

2

u/CeruleanEidolon Aug 12 '26

Hulk can look out of Banner's eyes sometimes and vise versa. Banner just chooses to forget what Hulk does because he still doesn't accept that they're part of the same whole.

u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man Jul 31 '26

I hope Banner/Hulk is gonna be okay after this 🥹

30

u/savannahsalvatore3 Aug 01 '26

i feel like the psych ward move is their way of saying why he won’t be in doomsday

13

u/Worthyness Thor Aug 03 '26

If they could, I'd 100% greenlight a Marvel Spotlight/one shot for Banner-hulk in the sanatorium. No big explosions or anything, but just a character piece between the two

25

u/Zumaki Aug 01 '26

Now instead of just worrying about Peter Parker's MCU fate I'm worried about Bruce Banner too.

8

u/Substantial_Pay_1990 Aug 01 '26

But didn't they say spider man will return

6

u/jaypross1 Aug 03 '26

Yes they did, very end credits scene, Spidey tracker

Now imagine Mark Ruffalo and Edward Norton being physical manifestations of different personalities as much as Hulk is.

11

u/LoveBy137 Aug 02 '26

Sounds like they'd have some sort of Fight Club going on inside his head.

2

u/JustMy2Centences Aug 03 '26

Sounds like a good time to tie in Moon Knight, although I can't see him being much help (but it would be fun).

2

u/lkangaroo Aug 03 '26

Age of Ultron never confirmed what he saw when Wanda gave him hallucinations.

iirc commentary track says it played out in real time, ie. the Hulkbuster fight wreaking havoc in the city.

8

u/Tyrannosapien Ghost Rider Aug 01 '26

I like the suggestion it will make Banner/Hulk into an enemy of the X-Men and mutants in general. Peter invented the inhibitor, but maybe Banner ends up on the side of pushing it as a "safety" measure

1

u/OliviaElevenDunham Loki (Avengers) Aug 04 '26

I hope so too.

32

u/eternali17 Yinsen Jul 31 '26

I so wish he'd referred to Hulk in that moment instead of Bruce.

32

u/jahnybravo Aug 01 '26

That might be the intent, but it really doesn’t hit the same. Part of the reason that’s so impactful in the comics is because Spider-Man basically knew Hulk better than he ever knew Bruce. He had talked to and worked with Bruce before, but most of the time they meet up it’s Spidey arriving on the scene and helping Hulk manage whatever it is he’s fighting or dealing with so he calms down. Like the panel of Spidey hanging off of Hulk’s arm because Tony wants to see the limits of what Peter can stick to, and Hercules goes “Green Sir, you have a spider on your arm.” Hulk just responds “Spider-Man is Hulk’s friend.” Hulk never forgets Peter because Spider-Man is one of those few heroes Hulk considers a genuine friend, through and through.

MCU Hulk and Spidey just really don’t know each other enough for that. I think probably Hulk was just in a rampage because he’s been locked inside Bruce’s mind for so long. He didn’t have the composure he had when he was on Sakaar and had control for 2 years straight because he’s waking up from a long fog. Confused and disoriented, lashing out at the nearest thing to him. But once he finally had Peter at his mercy and was able to deliver the finishing blows if he wanted, he heard Spidey pleading and realized that he was about to hurt someone who didn’t deserve it. And that made him regret the rampage.

22

u/HyperFrost Jul 31 '26

Unfortunately, hulk never met Spider-Man, unless it happened off-screen.

5

u/MattyBReilly Aug 01 '26

Tony could have talked a lot about Peter during the blip when he was helping Bruce make the gamma lab

13

u/robodrew Jul 31 '26

It would make sense to me, as I see it (savage) Hulk wasn't around when Dr. Strange's spell was cast.

20

u/Mister-Distance-6698 Jul 31 '26

The problem is hulk literally never met Peter. Banner did when Hulk was gone at the beginning of IW then by the time Peter was unsnapped Bruce was fully in control. Right up until this movie.

1

u/neoblackdragon Aug 01 '26

It does seem that in Ragnarok and IW, Hulk is actually awake which is why he can say no to Banner.

4

u/Burgoonius Jul 31 '26

Actually I think they both know Spider-Man just not Peter

4

u/mu1ti6rain Aug 01 '26

That right there is why I think hulk didn't lose the fight and just stopped. He remembered Peter and wondered why he was hurting one of the good guys.

1

u/ignite98 Aug 01 '26

My favorite part of the hulk scene in the movies, felt like he has a character development here (atleast for me)

1

u/Lucky_Display_1623 Aug 01 '26

I’m pretty sure the one person that remembers Peter is star lord, because the spell affected everyone on earth, but Quill wasn’t on earth at the time, so he should still remember Peter.

1

u/AfterDinnerSpeaker Phil Coulson Aug 02 '26

I think it's simpler than that personally, The Hulk has been shown to be capable of holding relationships with people but especially those who see Hulk as their own person, Thor and Valkyrie most notably.

Peter said they were friends, and he meant it.

1

u/gabloothegreat_1409 Aug 02 '26

yesss i noticed that asw

1

u/MajorRed001 Aug 02 '26

Banner and the Hulk share the same mind. Everything the Hulk does and knows, Banner knows.

So no, the Hulk does not remember Peter. But being called a friend by Spider-Man while rampaging does add depth to the Hulk's behavior.

1

u/AlienShades Aug 02 '26

I think it was meant to convey a similar feeling to that moment in the comic, that’s all

1

u/Ggriffinz Aug 09 '26

Yeah, it whispers to comic lore on how hulk is a unique existence in the universe as his consciousness is both here and beyond the green door. So when stange whipped the universes memory of Peter it did not touch the reality hulk returns to.

1

u/SelfInteresting7259 Aug 10 '26

WAITTT I didnt even think about that!!!

1

u/CeruleanEidolon Aug 12 '26

He definitely recognized Peter in that moment, which is why he stopped fighting back and let himself fall.

1

u/Professional-Ask9664 Aug 01 '26

It reminded of sun's getting real low 😍

0

u/elizabnthe Aug 01 '26

Hulk never even really met Peter.
