They’ll keep pushing them because people keep buying them.
I’m in a weird middle ground, I don’t mind them based on the whole aspect of not being real gacha and just a shitty gamble on a discount, but I do mind them on the prospect of what they can represent moving forward.
If gacha balloons are normalized to a point these kind of posts stop showing up and Netease decides it’s time to push them further into a more gacha-coded form where all the skins in a set are under one group of balloons.
Yeah agreed.
Its like i dont prefer it.
But at the moment except for forcing me to pay for emotes i wouldnt want if i paid full price, this is genuinely a better deal, especially if you want both.
There is no downside.
Those discounts save you money if you want both skins.
And im not going to refuse to get a skin i like in an attempt to "boycott" the practice.
But if they start being more expensive than normal skins. Then im out.
they already did something similar with the rogue and gambit skins. ended up skipping gambit because i didn’t want rogue and i wasn’t gonna pay extra for a skin i genuinely didn’t care for
Aside from Psylocke like a year ago and summer Magik who both took all 7 balloons Every other skin I got in 2 to 4 pulls all with free Blues I realize that's not the experience for everyone but I'd rather this than just them dropping $30 bundles everyday like it's Fortnite
I cannot be the only one who loves the balloon events. Or at least when a skin I already knew I was gonna buy turns out to be a balloon event. Now I have a chance to get this mister fantastic skin for cheap af when I already made up my mind I was gonna buy it for full price
I was the first one to comment in defense of this and then people starting agreeing with me afterwards. I did think it was a hot take at first but not anymore
You'll very likely pay more for because of the emojis they force in there, and the chances at a discount are slim. If Mantis is ever in one of the balloon events, I would actually be super annoyed about it.
I've gotten like 10 balloon skins (since I have liked 9/10 skins in the balloons) and got weird luck. 5 took me to max pops, 1 took me to three pops, 3 at two pops, and one on the first pop.
5% odds and increasing every drop is actually not as bad as you think. With joint probability, you have a 30% chance of getting the skin before the last balloon. It's really great for people who buy the full bundles and like the skin.
Nice try netease employee. Except you're forced to pay extra for useless emojis compared to shop skins. The "chance" is so miniscule that it might as well not be there. I've gotten 4 balloon skins and literally all of them only gave me the skin on the last balloon.
The worst case was the magik and Wanda one. I’m a magik main. Most played by far. I popped 4 balloons and didn’t get it and then used my last 50 units with the discount thing to pop one Wanda balloon, who I despise, and got the whole bundle in 1 😂 still got the magik in the end but took its sweet time. Paid full price for the character I play and got the Wanda bundle for 50 units. Still an extreme discount on a legendary skin so happy there, just won’t ever be getting used by me
Do the fucking math. It's not doable. People like you are a statistic improbability and one person's anecdotal experience does not override what actual math says.
Plus even if you "only" popped one balloon and got nothing you still wasted 400 units you wouldn't have otherwise. Newsflash, you're in the hole 2000 credits
News flash: you actually have free will not to buy shit you don't actually want. If spending units/money on something is a "waste" for you, why do you even spend anything at all on this something in the first place?
I had the exact same pull rate with the Pop. Got Emma and Loki summer skins first try, Doctor Strange third, and didn't bother with White Fox at all, or any others.
Mind you, I agree with you. But stating it's a "statistical improbability" seems a little hyperbolic
People genuinely defend this practise. You think netease does this out of the kindness of their hearts lol?
Sunk cost fallacy and them being balloons means more people will try to get them overall. Some people try for balloons even if they wouldn’t have bought them via the shop, that’s how they’re meant to get you
“Oh but you can get them cheaper”, yeah, a very small % of players. What they lose in people getting it cheaper they make back up in more ppl buying them
Not to mention the fomo extensions they always do
Oh and also emojis are a forced purchase too
Yeah its really 50 50 split on the community liking these are not. Some posts about these will have all comments defending it. And it only makes them more money so they will continue to do it
It’s not 50 / 50 in actuality. Netease isn’t stupid, they have the sales data on all of these things and obviously there has been a lot of success in these events. In real life people vote with their wallets and not reddit internet likes
The only thing I like about the pop events is that it gives me an incremental thing to grind when I finish the battle pass. However, thats not feasible for this amount of skins. If they only had 2 or 3 out at a time that would make sense, because you can grind for it. This amount, all at once, this often is fucking absurd
They extended all the summer ones, but like the ones for the sleepover party are ending before the magik and SW one and the summer ones overlapped with dino. They throw a lot of them at you
Gambling addiction is widespread and breaks homes. Sure this isn't as bad, but it works on the same basis. It's predatory even if you aren't affected by it. Just means you aren't the target audience.
I’m not saying it isn’t predatory, but the argument here wasn’t only about that.
If you don’t want the skin why are you popping balloons for it? Then you complain about not getting that skin that you didn’t want because someone who wanted the skin got it in one balloon and you didn’t? That’s stupid to me.
I agree with you, but the mechanic works on getting ppl to impulse buy without thinking it through. That's why they do it. Ppl think they'll get lucky and pop 1/2 balloons coz "its only 100 units, its only 200 units" etc.
Had a friend who popped balloons for a char he doesn't even play. It's the idea of "I have a chance of getting the skin for 100 or 200 units" that gets them to pop. The mechanic makes you impulse buy by presenting it as a small risk, high reward, before u know it you've spent units on a skin that you wouldn't even use.
If it was full price he wouldn't have spent those units. That's how it works, but on a mass scale.
Ok then first close all casinos and gambling websites that actually drive people to suicide before we jump on rivals for making us spend 24$ instead of 22$.
"Rivals has guns and killing , it implies the idea of becoming a murderer to kids!!!!" type argument
Also rivals gives you the chances clearly , (unlike games like brawl stars that kids play) and you can spend a max amount of 24$ , and the prize is guaranteed , which is not how casinos work at all.
It seems like you didnt use your brain before commenting dumb stuff
(the dumbass blocked me so i cant see his comment lmao , actual loser)
The hoops you're leaping through to defend this is genuinely impressive.
If parental control was a good solution total number of kids groomed would be 0.
2nd point is a strawman. 3rd point is just pandering and doesn't even address that the issue is still wrong even if they put the odds (which they hide in fine print behind a 2nd screen btw)
Don't let perfection stand in the path of progress. Limiting practices and not standing by them in any form is a path of progress. Just because other things are worse doesn't mean these things aren't bad. We can't fix the world but we do have a say in the communities we choose to be a part of. So why would we choose to let those practices that have known ill effects be part of the community we are part of?
This is such a gamblers philosophy. You aren't ever making money. You aren't selling your skins for profit, and if it all works out to a discount any way THEY CAN JUST MAKE SKINS CHEAPER. If all this math is about how it saves you money by using chance instead of just fucking selling the skins it's gambling
Many things in society exist to protect those people
Like how theyre allowed to go to casino and spend all their money there?
If you're going to play the hero by "protecting" low iq people , start by closing all casinos who take thousands of people's money and driving them to suicide , instead of commenting on r/marvelrivals because they made some people spend 24$ instead of 22$.
Human brain is vulnerable to gambling just like it is vulnerable to every other addicting thing, this isn't a high concept to understand. I am beggining to think people don't know what addiction is since a lot of them are victim blaming. Blaming the people who are by nature vulnerable to the thing instead of the system distributing the addictive thing is so fucking stupid.
It is also researched that children and teens are even more vulnerable to gambling btw. But its their fault right? They shouldn't play a video game designed for kids? What a fucking joke.
Because every other thing you are allowed buy in the world allows you to choose what you want to purchase and pay the price for the item you want.
In what other industry or store can you purchase the chance to win something out of a group of items that isn't considered gambling?
Do you go to the grocery store and pay $20 for a group of ingredients you don't want, but have a 100% chance to get the item you need to make dinner, or do you pay $2 for the ingredient you want because that's all you need?
Take it one step further:
The gaming/software industry is one of the only on the planet where you spend money to not own something. You are granted a license to use software that the developer can revoke at any time, for any reason without owing you a dime of your money back.
STOP shilling for software and tech companies. Their entire business model is designed to milk you of every last penny you have. It's fine if you want to spend that money, it's yours to do with as you please, but do not act like it's noble to support (most) game developers. Spending money on micro transactions will be a money hungry gacha scheme 99.99999999% of the time and they don't deserve a single cent of that money since they already collect and sell all of your data for more money than you will ever see in your entire lifetime.
There was a time when gaming was still a buisness, but didn't nickle and dime everyone, didn't try to suck every bit of money out of you, actually respected the players time money and support. Before people were stockholmed into believing it was ok. Before people were cucks to the billion dollar company.
Then like many other industries, it got corporatized and is way worse than it was. But keep defending it my guy, good on you.
It costs the same if you're unlucky. You have a chance to get it cheaper. I got Fox for 600 and Magneto for 100. The only "issue" is that if you're unlucky then the full price is as if you bought the bundle with emojis (2500) which some people don't like.
only technically since the balloons force the emojis on you inflating the price by 200-300 units or so while the shop skins dont limited or not but thats just the fact of it i cant remember if the daredevil skin costed any more than 1600 though that might have been an outlier from this
I always treat balloon events as a normal full skin purchase, since I've never got it before the final balloon. I don't even try if I don't have any intent of getting the featured skin.
I don’t feel bad for anyone who has an issue with these. If you want the skin: slight chance to get it cheaper. If you don’t want it full price and only buy some balloons hoping to get it and then are mad you don’t, that’s your own issue, learn some self control, don’t gamble and then complain you chose to gamble. I enjoy being able to buy one balloon from each at the slight chance of getting the skin, but if not still getting some emote or spray or nameplate or something. There is nothing “greedy” about this. You can claim slight scummyness from putting gambling in the game, but the decision to buy the balloons is up to the individual player so just learn some self control.
"Just learn self control" as if gambling addiction isnt a serious mental health issue that can be quickly solved. Jesus christ this take is so out of touch and unempathetic.
Every other ad on every website and every other commercial is a gambling advertisement. For gambling that risks losing money for nothing. 100s of games have lootboxes and other forms of gambling if you have an issue with it there’s many sources that are causing much more harm. The pop and win balloons are the least harmful “gambling” I’ve ever seen and there’s no chance that you spend money and get nothing, you’ll always get something.
I have issues with all of them, yes. That doesnt mean this one isnt an issue as well. Lootboxes and gacha have been banned in several countries for a reason. NetEase has done everything they can to trigger our brains to want to gamble more while just barely not breaking rules.
I dont have any gambling issue at all? Just because I dont like a predatory system doesnt mean Im personally affected by it. Its called having empathy. Try it.
I have it. When I have an issue with something I fight it at an actual source, not be the 50th person to cry on reddit about the smallest case of the issue
Theyre usually not indentified until its too late, and they have to want the help as well. It doesnt have to be anyone elses problem but you can at least have empathy for another human being with mental health issues.
I have empathy for people with mental health issues. Marvel Rivals “Pop and Win” isn’t ruining peoples lives. Address the actual issue with gambling in the world, not the one single game that’s doing the most tame hardly gambling.
"Why are you feeding local homeless when theres kids starving in africa" type of thinking. We can address multiple issues at the same time, no matter the size.
That’s not at all the same. I guarantee no one that complains about the balloons have ever done anything to fight real gambling issues. It’s more like “why do you always talk about the hungry homeless guy when you don’t give him food or care about anyone else starving in the world”
Edit: feel free to tell me all the activism you’ve done to fight gambling issues
Ive personally contacted local politicians to prompt them to add stricter laws about gacha, gambling and lootboxes, similar to laws many European countries have added. Discussing it online to educate people who dont know how serious gambling addictions are is an important aspect as well, but talking to brick walls here is difficult.
If that’s true I commend and respect your actions. Regardless, emphasizing this case and arguing on reddit does nothing for the cause. The solution to alcoholism is to ban all alcohol. But that won’t happen and freaking out anytime anyone drinks alcohol wouldn’t help that case at all. Just like there’s people who like and don’t abuse alcohol, there’s people who like and don’t abuse pop and win, I enjoy spending 150 units to get two random things at the chance to get a skin. It’s not just going to disappear nor would that solve any gambling in the world beyond rivals. Offer real solutions such as: keeping the pop and win but every skin in it can also be bought separately if you don’t want to participate in the balloons.
Why even be alive then? You have no agency. You can't control yourself. You're mad a company wants money. Nothing is ever in your control. Why even be a human being?
The fuck are you on about? All Im asking for is empathy (a basic human emotion) for people with mental health issues (something out of their control). Companies can make money without using predatory tactics that are banned in several countries, it happens daily. Why is defending these predatory tactics the hill yall are desperately wanting to die on?
Nice try netease employee. I want the skin, not useless emojis that I'm forced to pay extra for compared to a shop skin. The "slight chance" is so miniscule that it might as well not be there. I've gotten 4 balloon skins and literally all of them only gave me the skin on the last balloon.
Is it math or just game knowledge that is not your strong suit?
You know you can buy JUST the skin without the bundle for most store skins? And if you do that, they are indeed MUCH cheaper than the bundle. The gacha mechanic FORCES you to buy the entire bundle if you don't hit early.
You are literally proving in real time that the people who defend this balloon BS are low iq. Shop skins cost LESS than balloon skins because you're not forced to get the emojis to get the skin in the shop. You can get the bundle without the emojis for 2200 in the shop whereas the balloon skins are 2400
I want all 3 and now I have a chance to get them for $1, $3, $7, and $15 instead of full price and then the other 2 will be discounted down at 50% off, saving me $24.
But god forbid you apply logic to why this type of event is beneficial to players when you can just endlessly whine about “predatory monetization.”
While i do think people need self control. I would like to see every single time how much the skin cost in total and i wouldnt mind a "how much you already spend" amount. Like it or not this tactics make you dissociate from the total amount your spending.
I got the Deadpool and the white fox skin in one shot. My bf got the psylocke skin in one shot too. But I also buy full price skins too so it’s like the same thing ? I view this as a chance to get skin for cheaper, but at the end it’s ultimately the same price as i were purchasing a skin? If you want real gacha issues play gacha games, those are very predatory.
The most annoying thing is it's the emoji bundle. I never buy the emoji bundles when it's in the store... Yet the balloons force me to have them. I'd rather pay 2200 coins than pay more if I don't get lucky on the balloons. If it didn't have the emojis as a balloon, then it would be fine.
Exactly! At the end of the day addiction is about self-regulation and self-accountability.
If you know you're not going to be able to handle your liquor, don't drink. If you know you're not going to be able to stop gambling, don't gamble. Simply do not buy into this system. It is as simple as that. No one is forcing people to buy these skins or play this game. You all can stop anytime you want.
Its reallly not considering a lot of people will get it for a lot less if they get lucky or not pay the full price. If they were greedy they would def charge as a standalone item in shop so everyone is forced to buy it for the 2400 coins or whatever
It would be different if say you rolled up front for a possible discount , then could decide if you wanted to use it or not. Like they do in stores all the time. The way it is now, entices you in and now you’ve already bought one or two so why not pop them all / that’s what people find scummy
also I know the game straight up tells you the chances of rolling each item, but a large portion of players still think it’s actually 1 in 6
Someone explained it once as rolling a Nat 20, that’s the odds you get it on first roll. On 5th (so not last) I think it goes up to just under 10% ? something around there.
But the Nat 20 analogy was really eye opening to me
If I want the skin either way I genuinely do not care if it's balloons or not since it's the same price with a tiny chance of it being cheaper.
Once the balloon pops become MORE expensive than just buying it outright I'll start complaining about it.
(And yeah yeah gambling addictions and whatever. Idc. Self-control.)
Pop & Win isn't terrible, but there should be an option to buy it up front at a static/base price OR take the chance to do the Pop & win that costs like +25/50 more than the base if you go 0 for 8 on the costume.
That's actually a good idea. They could give the option to pop or buy the bundle for those who don't like to gamble. Once they pick their option they wouldn't be able to swap to keep things fair.
It's the price of like the skin plus all the extras and excludes you from buying just the skin like regular releases.
So i paid 20 bucks to get the wanda summer skin thinking it'd be enough since legendaries are like 2200, but it had the emotes and stuff so it was actually like 2500 credits.
I kinda prefer the regular option to exclude the emotes I dont care for. Because I'm forced to pay for them if I'm unlucky.
yea most of the playerbase would have bought the bundle with the emotes from the shop directly anyways as proven by the statistics of the sales, not from the crybaby brigade that is this subreddit. The balloon events are literally just a chance to get cheaper bundles, AND to get 1/2 off on the other skin if you were already going to get it, too.
I don't mind them i just didn't realize what the full price was until then, cause the other ones i did were the rare Daredevil skin and the r&g one which was even more. But it's the same price overall just the illusion of choice.
3 pop and wins at once is really just brave and stupid. People hated 2 at once but let it go since it was only summer at first.... then they just never stopped doing them...
“People hated 2 at once” This is an assumption. I feel that most people are indifferent to it and a vocal minority make post about it every time it happens and assume they speak for the entire community.
It's a f2p game. Is the practice scummy and predatory, sure. But if a game is f2p then they need to find ways to milk money from their whales while also decreasing the currency the F2P players earned through events and free options within the battlepasses.
So long as the gacha stays for cosmetics there's not much of an argument to be made unless gacha costumes reduce hitboxes or the emotes give iframes.
In theory yes, but based on how effective gambling can be, and how this kind of balloon popping event is not regulated in any way, there's nothing stopping them from arbitrarily making your odds of getting the skin first try very, very low.
Like if you have 1200 blue units in your account, the game can guarantee that you spend every last unit. But if you don't have any, And spend real money, they inflate your chance of getting it first or second try.
This. Like god Reddit comment sections are so brain dead when it comes to the reality of gambling and how most people respond to it. Like I am so happy the average Redditor of the Riavls sub is immune to this but most people aren’t.
The gambling aspect leads people who didn’t even really want the skins to see they have 300 units so may as well give it a spin or two. And then they get high on the anticipation or say “oh well I already did some spins may as well do another… and then another… and then another” until suddenly they pay full price for something they didn’t want
And the moment someone genuinely gets one of these the first few balloons and sees it is possible? It’s over. They over inflate how common it is and then pull for every single one.
And the people all coming to Reddit to share how they got it in one are just feeding people the fact it is possible, again giving an impression it is easy to win. It isn’t. I’ve pulled four of these and paid the full price everytime. Most people aren’t probably being taken all the way but are still holding onto that idea they will eventually get their break.
It’s gambling plain and simple. And people who defend it are kissing the ass of a company by helping justify the gambling for people all around
Edit: oh not to mention they give the “incentive” of the second skin being half off. So then you feel inclined to just get the other one as well cause it’s just so much cheaper
One of the big things I HATE is that we can’t gift these skins even after we win the event I like buying my buddy skins he wants for the characters he likes playing and vise versa and this Mr fantastic skin would have been a great opportunity for us to buy each other skins (he likes playing invis for his strategist) and now we can’t do that cause ts is gatcha
I don’t mind them but there’s too many.. I don’t want all these silly emojis and I’m being forced to get them with balloons if I want the skin most of the time.
And once again there's the debate between people aware of their whims and spendings being able to do basic math vs. those who protect imaginary self-appointed victims and push the agenda to never be responsible for their choices while blaming the system offering opportunities
Seems like these Pop&Wins are not going away, it's the new normality, all those against can vote with their wallet
Why do you have a problem with the balloon events? you either pay the normal full price of other legendary skins or you get a nice discount you don't have to spend more then 2200 no matter what
"It just gives you the chance to buy it for cheaper" mfs
When they realize that SHOP SKINS ALREADY GIVE YOU THAT OPTION
There are bundles that allow you to buy without the emojis. Fucking hell you can even buy JUST THE SKIN in the bundle sometimes.
So what you're defending is taking away the OPTION to buy something for cheaper for something where you have the CHANCE to buy something for cheaper.
Please use your heads and see why this is scummy. I'm the type of guy that never usually buys MVPs or emotes (barely see them to matter anyway) and these balloons force me to buy those, the extra useless sticker and a bunch of emojis nobody can see.
So would it be better if it was in the check mark menu where you can just buy them and not gamble them or are we finally done bitching about the gambling thing
Ahh, Nurse-Pool is a gacha skin? That’s a shame! I was willing to buy it outright, but I’m not willing to support shady gambling practices in a children’s game
This balloon BS is just a price hike. The chance of getting a discount is so miniscule that you might as well not count it. I've gotten 4 balloon skins and literally all of them only gave me the skin on the last balloon. You're literally just paying more for useless emojis with no benefit compared to a shop skin.
You could just not participate. They're not forcing you and there are players that end up getting these skins cheaper which should be considered a win for the "community". Y'all just get pissy because y'all don't win but if you really want one of these and are willing to pay then there's no downside unless you lack self control and critical thinking.
