Meta Welcome to r/Malaysians!
Hello folks and welcome to r/Malaysia's sister sub, r/Malaysians!
For those who just clicked in and is wondering what the sub is for: This sub is essentially for Malaysians to talk and post about any other topics beyond Malaysia. Here is where you can post images, videos, create and join conversations and threads revolving anything that isn't quite about Malaysia but needs a Malaysian take on it, and more! Oh and this is a race, politic and religion-free sub 🙌🏻
Most major subreddits such as r/AITA, r/JustnoMIL, r/relationship_advice, r/casualconversation, r/malefashionadvice, r/Teenagers and what have you are usually centralised around people who reside outside of SEA and may not be valid to us locally and culturally but yet the demand for it isn't wide enough to sustain its own subreddit. r/Malaysians would (hopefully) be a good place for a catch-all of such threads.
We will be coming up with contest weeks soon, as well as accepting any other ideas you guys might have for the sub, so stay tuned! We are also still tweaking design and appearances as we go. Meanwhile, everyone is encouraged to start posting what they think fits the sub to get the ball rolling :)
Much love, r/Malaysia mod team.
tldr; r/CasualUK but for Malaysia.

Rant Woke up in the middle of the night because I smelled burning smoke, my throat’s hurting badly
I panicked, thought the house is on fire. Turned on all the lights, can’t see the fire. No fire on neighbours house either.
Only later I remembered we are on fire, just across the sea. Damn. I’m over this haze.

Ask Malaysians Parents, what baby or toddler products are actually worth spending money on?
I have a 4-year-old boy, and looking back, I've definitely bought things that seemed absolutely necessary at the time, only to realize later that we barely used them. Some of the expensive stuff seemed urgent because everyone recommended it, while other things I thought were unnecessary ended up being genuinely useful.
For parents with little ones, what products do you think are actually worth spending money on? And what are some things you wish you'd skipped or bought a cheaper version of?
I'm talking about anything from everyday essentials to sleep, feeding, toys, travel gear, or things that make parenting a little easier. Doesn't necessarily have to be expensive, just something that genuinely makes a difference.
Curious to hear what you've found worth the money after actually using it, rather than just what gets recommended on every baby essentials list!

Casual Conversation 🎭 Anyone from the local game dev scene? (I'm a music composer looking for passion projects)
Hallo
As the title says, I'm a composer and I'm keen on finding game scoring/composing projects! Been working full time in media/audio engineering for almost 6 years but always wanted to dip my toes into videogame work. Being a bit clueless about the local scene though, I thought I'd just post around first.
Some thoughts/expectations I have:
I'm working full-time and that'll still be my main priority, so if possible, understanding the need for some flexibility would be appreciated. However, I'm hungry for passion projects and people with a creative vision for storytelling or purpose in their game, and I'm the type of person who'd match that with my effort and passion too.
I'm open to low budget or casual projects too, or, hey, if you're an established dev, come take a gamble on me lols
I can't post links to my work publically as all relevant examples are p&c, but more than happy to start a chat!
Lemme know if I need to elaborate on anything else

Quick Question Best quick soundproofing solution (Condo / Apartment)?
Just move in Condo, but walaoweh, neighbours keep slamming and rattling their entrance metal grill door to the point we are anxious if someone's trying to break in our unit (since the sound is loud and nonstop)!
The sound was manageable if once in a while, but some of the houses was rented to multiple people so the sound is coming nonstop especially peak hour (early morning / late evening) left right even lower & upper floor sounds.
Even when we are hanging at the living room area inside our unit, can notice the sound leaks in from the main door.
Is there any quick fix for us? I am thinking the following
Buy one of those seal strip & bottom seal from Shoppe
Hang a shaggy thick carpet directly to our metal grill to absorb outside sound
Please share if the above methods won't work in yall experience..

Quick Question (any technician please help) What is the typical cost of repairing a ceiling fan with this kind of problem?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I'm on a very tight budget, I'd like to fix the fan myself if possible. However, I'm not sure what the actual problem is or how to fix it.
The ceiling fan is from Deka, but I don't know which model it is. The problem first started a few months ago, and here's what happens:
When I turn on the wall switch, the fan beeps but doesn't spin. When I press a button on the remote control, it beeps again and the blades move just a little bit before stopping. The fan continues to beep as long as the wall switch is on.
I then keep pressing the remote control button repeatedly. Eventually, the blades start moving a little more with each press, but the fan still won't spin on its own. I have to use a stick to push the blades to help them move. After repeatedly pressing the remote button and helping the blades move, the fan eventually starts spinning normally, as if nothing had happened.
However, sometimes, after running for a few hours, the fan suddenly stops by itself and starts beeping again. When that happens, I only need to press the remote button once to get it spinning normally again, but it may stop and start beeping again a few hours later.
but today, after turning it off, and on again. I tried to do the same trick but it barely move at all. not even a bit.
What could be causing this problem? Is it something relatively cheap to repair, or would it be expensive? Since I'm on a tight budget, I'd really appreciate any advice on this

Ask Malaysians Question on GETS-WRP
I applied for GETS-WRP back in August this year. I didn't receive anything about the 14 days review for weeks so I thought I didn't get it. Then, I got a good part-time job.
So, here's the thing: I got an e-mail this week that said my application was accepted and they wanted me to do an online assessment. I scored well on the said online assessment. I was curious on the questions and I had friends who wanted GETS-WRP so I did it to pretty much see what the assessment would be about.
My questions now would be:
How long after the online assessment should I expect to hear back from them?
Since they just announced Cohort 6 would start this October, does that mean I'm part of that cohort or the next cohort?
The part-time job has a contract period that would last until early next year. It's not stopping me from looking for other stuff to do for when I'm not on the clock, but GETS-WRP did mention applicants should not be employed at the time of application. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I like the part-time job but the GETS-WRP is a good opportunity for me if I do get it. I've discussed with my supervisor as well about this, and she was fine with letting me go.
I'm at the last leg of my studies, so all I'm doing is waiting for thesis endorsement. There's literally nothing going on but I'm still a bit concerned about the part where it says you need to be free from educational responsibilities (iirc). Though, I do have a friend who got GETS-WRP while still being an active student back then (no longer a student now though). Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Should these be mentioned in the interview?

Ask Malaysians How do you actually evaluate your unit trust investments?
Having spent over a decade working in Malaysian fund research and analytics, I've often wondered why it's so difficult for ordinary investors to get a clear picture of the unit trust funds they're putting their money into. There's no shortage of data, reports and performance figures in the industry, but much of it isn't particularly accessible to the average person. Many investors rely on their agents to explain their funds, yet may not know how their investments compare with similar funds, how much they're paying in fees, or whether their returns have been reasonable. It seems odd that people can commit years of savings to unit trust funds without having a straightforward way to assess them for themselves.
I've been thinking about this for a long time. You shouldn't need to be an investment expert to understand what you own and ask whether it's doing well. Ordinary Malaysians should be able to understand their unit trust and investment-linked funds, assess their performance and compare them with similar funds without having to work through complicated research or depend entirely on someone else to explain things. Of course, having better information doesn't guarantee better investment decisions, but it gives people a better starting point. I'm curious how other Malaysians here approach their unit trust and investment-linked fund investments.
Do you research your funds independently, or do you mostly rely on your agents or advisers?

Help ⚠️ What is it like going to Toastmasters as a first-time guest?
I’m in my early 20s and thinking of going to a Toastmasters club near me as a guest for the first time.
I have pretty severe social anxiety, which is actually one of the reasons I’m trying to push myself to go
:( I’m hoping that repeatedly putting myself in these situations will eventually make them less scary.
I just want to know what the experience is actually like as a first-time guest in a Toastmasters club. What happens when you first walk in? Will people come up and talk to you? Do they make guests introduce themselves in front of everyone? Would I be expected to participate in Table Topics or can I just observe for the first meeting?
Also, I’m a woman in my early 20s but from the photos, the club near me seems to be mostly people in their mid-30s and above (I'm not based in KV) Unfortunately it’s pretty much the only one near me 😭 Would it be awkward being significantly younger than most of the members?
Would especially love to hear from anyone who went alone for the first time or joined because of social anxiety. I know I want to actually go eventually, I just want to know exactly what I’m walking into so I can mentally prepare myself lol

Mildly Menarik Sundadanio, caught from a blackwater kerangas swamp in Malaysia
Sundadanio margarition, the neon blue rasbora.
It is a tiny (2 cm) dwarf fish only found in southern Sarawak and nowhere else. Endemic.
It lives in blackwater streams, forest peat swamps, and shallow pools with highly acidic water full of tannins. pH 4.0-6.0.
They feed on minute invertebrates, micro-crustaceans and zooplankton in the leaf litter. They school in large groups of at least 15.
Despite its names, it is not related to rasboras nor danios and is in its own family. This family is able to produce croaking or clicking sounds when interacting or stressed.
Kerangas forests, also known as Sundaland heath forests, is a type of acidic nutrient-poor forest found on Borneo and the Bangka-Belitung islands.
“Kerangas” itself came from Iban language, meaning “land which cannot grow rice.” An apt name.

Help ⚠️ Help: Ant, making large colonies & making trail paths where we walk and parked cars at home. How do I get rid of them for GOOD?

Any bright ideas? Thank you.
