If youโre coming to Sepang this weekend for the race, Selamat Datang and Welcome! You came for the F1, but we strongly recommend you stay for the makan.
Malaysia is a small country, but our food scene is quite serious. We have Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan and many other food traditions all living together. And somehow all of us have strong opinions about where to find and what constitutes the best version. ๐
You can makan at a roadside stall, kopitiam, mamak, pasar malam, hawker centre or fancy restaurant. Sometimes the best food is served in a shop that looks like it hasn't changed since 1987. A reliable rule of thumb is if there is queue of locals, that stall is good.

๐ So what should you makan?
If this is your first time in Malaysia, start with these:
Nasi Lemak:
Our unofficial national obsession. Coconut rice, sambal, ikan bilis, peanuts and egg. Add ayam goreng (fried chicken) or ayam/daging rendang (chicken/beef rendang) if you're hungry.
Roti Canai:
Flaky, crispy, oily in the best possible way. Eat with dhal or curry. Perfect breakfast. Perfect supper. Actually, perfect anytime.
Try Roti Tissue and Roti Pisang too (variants of Roti Canai). By the way, the pronunciation is char-nai not car-nai.
Satay:
Grilled skewers with peanut sauce. Easy introduction to Malaysian food and dangerously easy to finish 10 sticks without realising.
Char Kway Teow:
Flat rice noodles wok-fried with that smoky wok hei. If you see someone cooking it over a roaring flame, pay attention.
Laksa:
Important: there isn't just ONE laksa. Curry laksa, asam laksa, Sarawak laksa, Laksa Lemak, Laksa Johor and others all taste quite different. Go explore.
Nasi Kandar:
Rice drowning gloriously in different curries. Add your choice of meat and sides. The more kuah, the better.
Banana Leaf Rice:
Rice served on a banana leaf with vegetables, curries and various sides. Eat with your hands if you're comfortable, it's part of the experience (just remember to wash your hands thoroughly beforehand).
Teh Tarik:
Pulled tea, sweet and frothy. Best enjoyed at a mamak while lepak.
Cendol / Ais Kacang:
Because Malaysia is hot and you will probably need something cold after walking around KL. PS: 'ais kacang' is pronounced 'ice car-chang' not 'ice car-kangaroo'

๐ Where to makan around KL?
Some areas worth checking out:
Kampung Baru: Malay food right in the middle of KL's skyscrapers.
Petaling Street / Chinatown: Lots of Chinese-Malaysian food and old-school kopitiam vibes.
Brickfields: Malaysian Indian food, banana leaf rice, dosa, roti, curries and more.
Pudu: Plenty of old-school hawker and kopitiam food.
Chow Kit: Markets, hawker food and proper local neighbourhood vibes.
Jalan Alor / Bukit Bintang: Touristier, yes, but convenient if you're staying around the city centre and want to see KL at night.
Bangsar: Mix of Malaysian food, cafรฉs, restaurants and nightlife.
And don't be afraid to get out of the tourist areas. Some of the best makan spots are just in ordinary neighbourhoods. Follow the crowd, look for a busy kopitiam, and see what everyone else is ordering.

๐ฃ๏ธ Learn some Malaysian before you makan
While Malaysians are conversant in English, but dropping a few words will definitely earn you some smiles.
โMakan!โ : Eat / food. Also used as an invitation: Come, let's eat!
โSedap!โ : Delicious! Your most important word.
โBerapa?โ : How much?
โNak ini.โ ๐ : I want this. Very useful when pointing at something delicious.
โTerima Kasih.โ : Thank you. (Literally means I receive your love)
"Pedas" means spicy. And yes, sometimes it really means spicy. If you dont want it spicy, say 'Tak nak pedas'.

๐ถ๏ธ A few Malaysian food survival tips
If you have dietary restrictions, ask before ordering. Malaysia has halal, non-halal, vegetarian and many other options.
And one important thing:
Don't assume every Malaysian dish is the same everywhere.
Ask Malaysians what the "real" version is and you'll probably get 17 different answers. That's also part of the fun.
If you're Malaysian or a regular KL foodie, drop your recommendations below for our F1 visitors.

To everyone visiting this weekend:
Selamat datang, welcome, and enjoy your makan! ๐ฒ๐พโค๏ธ
I am very hungry and I am late for the physio session so heyyy breakfast is open until 12pm! When is the last time I had breakfast ha? Oh and haze is very bad today. Look! Singapore gone!
with the exception of zainul, i tried being as consistent as possible by getting nasi + kuah campur + ayam (either ayam bawang or ayam goreng. ayam goreng is my personal go to) + bendi + telur masin.
Chocolate Butter Cheese Cake! Pity the cream cheese layer didn't stay in the center but the taste blew me away! It's moist, soft, chocolaty, creamy and not too sweet, we are in love! โค๏ธ This is coming from a person who hates chocolate cakes ๐
Well, I think JB people will call this Mee Hun Kueh, while KL people will call this Pan Mee....
Whatever the name is, I just want to share this out because nice to eat, and their Mala Mee Hun Kueh quite special (i knew previous there is pan mee also practice like this, but I forgot the shop name)
They give you soup with the Mee Hun Kueh and the Mala seperately, you can add on yourself for the spicy level, and ya, I cannot too spicy, so I've it a little bit(like the photo, as you can see there still have more Mala sauce in the small plate)
Ok, this Mala is not China's type Mala, is Malaysian type Mala, ITS SPICYYYYY! I mean for me ๐
Cause my BFF looks okay for it and she still able to add on the Mala.
Not sure that I can share the location in Reddit or not but this locate at Subang area, the boss is from JB that's why the menu is Mee Hun Kueh, the name ๐๐
Anyone in Subang area, can pay a visit to try it out.
Do you guys know this snack/biscuit? Although I prefer without filling. I think corn flakes Kellogg has this type of shack but I cannot find it in supermarkets nearby.
Tok Janggut, Kuching. XL size so 49 bucks and it's a big meal. Meat falls off the bone and the marrow is awesome. Greens are crisp and flavorful. Kuahs are intense but a tad salty.
Discovered another way to utilize my robot which is to knead dough. All done in one bowl, don't even need to take out my weighing scale, it's easier than my bread maker! โค๏ธ
my family brought this from kuching. its stuffed with chicken and mushroom. ive been wanting to try some and i really like it especially the mushroomy (?) taste haha.
I was too. But this Ice Cream I really need to share it out and shout out. I am not sure is it suitable to this subreddit? But!! Oh my gosh!!
I though this ice cream is cheap, but NOPE!!!
I was wanna to try it out only and I went to get a sit, then my BFF bought it for me without telling me price.
We do have a small chit chat, until I am almost finished it, my BFF told, this one cost RM15
I was stun and "huh?"
Well, I know this is not mixxx ice cream, this is not ai-cxx ice cream, I also know this is not mxmxyx ice cream!! well...... You guys try this before?? And, oh my gosh!
Urhmm, well, alright, still worth for the price-lah... I mean, I really enjoy it and really chocolate too!!!
Alright, let guess the price but no special giveaway or special things for you guys la! hahaha
Unless you come Subang find me, i bring you go mixxx ๐ฅฒ๐ฅฒ
