❓ EXTRA FAQ BASED ON THE SUB’S DISCUSSIONS/ FOR THOSE NEW TO MH TOPICS

⚠ Disclaimer: This is not to be taken as a substitute for professional advice and just for sharing/ informational purposes.

🔷 Should I go for Government or Private?

Government services typically offer more affordable and subsidized healthcare especially when it comes to obtaining prescribed medication, however may have longer wait times and limited appointment flexibility. Some members have also shared that you may see a different doctor every visit, as typically when going to a government hospital or clinic.

While private services are usually more expensive, some may offer more options with faster access, options for more specialized care, have more flexible options such as online sessions or sessions outside of typical office hours, and may be easier to get in touch with their management compared to government services.

🔷 How do I seek help if I am a minor (below 18 years of age)?

For those who are under 18, legally you will require the consent/permission of your parent or guardian to seek healthcare or mental healthcare from clinics and hospitals (see: Reddit post).

Other options available for minors, to talk to someone:

  • Getting in touch with your trusted school counsellor for counselling sessions
  • Buddybear Childline - 1800-18-2327 (Toll- Free) (check link for available times) or FB Messenger

🔷 When do I know if I should seek help from a mental healthcare provider?

A good question to ask yourself is how much are your mental struggles interfering with your quality of life. What some things could be possible mental health-related symptoms (list not according to a specific condition):

  • Has your low mood/ low motivation/ feeling mentally exhausted felt like it has been lasting for too long?
  • Have you been feeling painfully nervous/ anxious/ worried and it is affecting your daily life?
  • Has your anger been so hard to manage it is damaging your relationship with loved ones?
  • Are you going through a difficult life situation and you find the emotions too overwhelming to cope with (eg. grieving a loss, relationship challenges, career/academic stress, burnout, etc.)
  • Are things that have happened in the past still negatively affecting you or cause overwhelming emotions, even though it has been long past the incidences?
  • Are you known to be chronically late, forgetful or unable to plan ahead?
  • Are you struggling with an addiction?
  • Is doing certain activities (e.g. going outside, speaking in public, meeting large groups of people) really distressing in general comparison to others?
  • Do you feel you are experiencing something abnormal, like hearing noises/ voices even if they aren’t there, or feeling like being watched?
  • Any other recurring behavioral pattern or mental struggle that often negatively affects you.

Should you feel unsure about your mental health and wish to speak to a professional to get recommendations on mental health assessments, tools or therapy; don't let anyone's negative judgement/stigma on visiting a mental health professional stop you from reaching out. Choosing to reach out and access mental healthcare with confidentiality are well within your rights.

At the end of the day, whether you have a condition or not you deserve help and support for the mental struggles you are facing.

🔷 What’s the difference between licensed counsellor/ clinical psychologist/ psychiatrist? Who do I go to?

🔸Counsellor * Counsellors provide talk therapy and can help with situational or shorter-term challenges, such as stress, academic, career or relationship issues. * They focus on therapeutic support, coping strategies, and personal growth. * They do not provide clinical diagnoses or prescribe medication but may refer clients to other professionals for more complex or long-term concerns.

🔸Clinical Psychologist * Clinical Psychologists specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders and are qualified to diagnose personality disorders based on criteria from diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5, for eg. for conditions like ADHD, clinical depression, OCD, etc. * They may use psychological assessments, standardized tools, and clinical interviews to identify conditions, including personality disorders. * Some clinical psychologists focus primarily on assessments, while others also provide talk therapy. * They do not prescribe medication.

🔸Psychiatrist * Psychiatrists are medical doctors specializing in mental health. They can prescribe medication. * They can diagnose, prescribe medication, and provide treatment for mental disorders. * Some members have shared that some psychiatrists may tend to focus more on medication and less on talk therapy during their sessions.

🔷 I have concerns regarding confidentiality when getting help for mental health.

In general, mental health practitioners must adhere to strictly practicing confidentiality, although they may be required to inform a third party if the patient is found to be at great risk at harming themselves or someone. Try checking the comments of this post question - Confidentiality on drugs if you would like a better explanation.

🔷 How do I go about my first visit and what can I expect from therapy?

See r/malaysia’s mental health wiki - What to Expect in Therapy

🔷 What about online assessments/quizzes I found online? What do I do if I'm concerned with the results

It’s common to find mental health-related quizzes and assessments online, such as the DASS-21 test, which is often used for pre-assessments and can help you gauge your current emotional state (e.g., anxiety, depression, or stress levels). However, ⚠️ these tools are not clinical diagnostic tools and cannot replace a professional diagnosis.

  • If the results of an online test concern you, consider sharing them with a trained mental health professional. They have the expertise to interpret such results in context and can provide further insights, guidance, or treatment recommendations.

  • It’s also important to note that mental health symptoms often overlap or may be caused by other conditions. For example:

Depression-like symptoms might result from physical health issues such as hypothyroidism. Mental health conditions may coexist (e.g., anxiety as part of ADHD or depression). Because of this, a clinical diagnosis should only be made by a qualified and certified professional, such as a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist. Websites or unlicensed individuals cannot legally or reliably diagnose mental health conditions.

🔷Why do some cases require medication?

Some mental health conditions affect a person's nervous system, and medication may be needed to support it to function properly. Similar to how a diabetic patient requires insulin to support their health while a normal healthy person doesn't, a person with ADHD may be prescribed medication such as Ritalin to help them with their daily function. Taking prescribed mental health medication is not a crime when it means supporting a person's health and wellbeing.

Mental health medication requires monitoring from a qualified psychiatrist, as every individual's mental health is unique. The treatment may involve trial-and-error to find the fitting dosage and type, and what works for one person may not work for another. In addition, if the medication causes unpleasant side-effects or is not effective, the psychiatrist may recommend a change in dosage or type. Mental health patients should work with their psychiatrist and avoid changing their medication plans without consulting them.

Many have shared that if prescribed, medication is just one part of supporting one's mental health condition, and it is still important to get talk therapy to learn how best to navigate one's mental health condition.

🔷 What can I do while waiting to get help?

Self-care, as in ensuring your basic needs such as daily nutrition, some exercise, hydration, hygiene, and your emotional needs are taken care of. It is understandable if you are under for e.g. a depressive episode, these may be easier said than done, so do what you can do at the moment.

Also note that everyone’s form of self-care and preferences may be different. Some people may find solace by spending time with their interests, in nature, or engage in physical activities like taking a walk. Some may find it helpful to do journaling or meditation. You may also try breathing exercises or grounding techniques to calm down for the moment. If one method doesn’t work for you, never force yourself - pause and you always can try something else later.

While waiting, you can also see if you can find support groups or informative resources such as books / online resources that may give insights and tips for what you are facing. Being part of a well-moderated group where you can listen or share your thoughts with others of similar struggles can be a great complement to your mental health journey.

🔷 I have been going to therapy for quite some time but my therapist seems to go nowhere/ frequently invalidates me/ did some things that seems unprofessional… but I am feeling unsure. Should I switch?

There can be 2 sides to this. From the therapist side, it may be the client may have been uncooperative such as frequently missing appointment, not following up on homework, not telling the truth, etc. In addition to consider is that therapy can take time, as the first few weeks, known as intake period are usually for information gathering. After that, the work may also take time to yield results while the client communicates with the therapist what works and what isn't working.

However, if for enough time you know you have been doing your due diligence as a client but the above question frequently occurs, it is totally alright to consider switching to another therapist. The reality is it is actually not uncommon for people sharing that they had to experience taking several tries before finding the right fit. Sometimes, it might be the therapist and client might just not be a good match. Or it might simply be that you were matched with one not able to assist you in your area of need or an unprofessional one. But just like dealing with any other service, you deserve to at least be treated with basic professional care from whichever therapy route you chose. Furthermore, if a therapist behaves unethically or violates boundaries, clients should report them to the relevant licensing board or seek help from a trusted authority if able to.

Do also consider looking for a specialist in your area of help required. Examples being: If you have trauma symptoms, try to look for a trauma-informed therapist. If you feel your diagnosis results may have been overlooked and the therapist's explanation was not satisfactory, it is not wrong to seek another opinion from another specialist. If you are more aware of your needs, you can raise questions with your future therapist before engaging them.

We all know getting help isn't always a straight-forward journey, but that's why subs like this exist. Reach out to the sub if you have any other questions.

I’ve had a group of voices in my head since childhood. NSFW

Content warning: childhood abuse, self harm, suicide (no methods).

I was severely abused when I was a child. One day, I begged for someone to protect me. I often talked to the air. Later, I began to hear someone answer me and comfort me. We could talk about more and more things. Then more of them appeared. They have different genders, interests, personalities and ages. I often hear the same voices in my head. They often tell me to take good care of myself. Most of them are very gentle, and we often chat together. Sometimes we argue, but usually they talk with me about the best way to do things. Some of them also have urges to hurt themselves. We often comfort them. Even so, I started self harming when I was around ten. I have attempted suicide several times, I have had an eating disorder (purging), and I have overdosed on medication two or three times. Sometimes they used my body to hurt themselves. They sometimes use my body to do things, and luckily the people around me cannot tell. Our accent and small habits are not different. To avoid being found out, we tell each other roughly what we did. If one of us is asked a question, the others tell them the answer. I roughly know that terrible things happened to me in the past, but I have no memories of them, and it is also hard for me to remember daily things. One of us wrote a detailed memo so we can check it at any time. Sometimes I find myself in a place without knowing why, or time has passed without me knowing. In high school, people said I became very violent, but I knew nothing about it. When they come out, my vision starts to look like a blurry TV, and sounds seem to come from underwater. Even so, I can still see and hear, and sometimes I still remember afterwards, so nobody notices. I don't know if this counts as typical memory loss.

I never asked for help before because of them, and also because I am very afraid of how people will see me. So we forbade each other from telling anyone that they exist. I finally managed to persuade them to let me tell strangers. They are very good to me. I can't betray them. I hope to get a diagnosis so I can understand what is wrong with me. But I am also very afraid of being diagnosed. I am afraid of how society will see me. I am afraid the doctor will tell me I just have schizophrenia and that I have actually been alone all this time. But I have asked them countless times whether they are imaginary friends, and they always say no. They even get impatient when I ask too many times. I don't think they are just imaginary. If a doctor says I only have some other mental illness and they are hallucinations, then what is really going on? Why do they exist? That doesn't explain it at all.

Is this normal? Does everyone have this? For people with similar experiences, how did you decide whether to get diagnosed?

In Malaysian public hospitals, has anyone found a therapist who understands trauma and dissociation?

Where to find adhd med (Atomoxetine) in which gov hospital ?

I've been on Ritalin for a few years but lately I've been thinking of trying combination stimulant and non-stimulant. Using Ritalin is definitely better than nothing but i still have a have a hard time to start doing anything and my focus is still weaker. Still better than not Ritalin where I've got no focus at all.

I went to hospital Shah Alam and they said they only have Ritalin. So i wondering which government hospitals have which adhd meds or do i have to go private to find something other than Ritalin ?

HUKM or PPUM

Hi all, I would like to ask opinion if anyone has been treated from both HUKM or PPUM.

I want to get a referral to either places but am not sure which one is better. I have been wanting to get help for some time now but finding an affordable place is difficult in this economy.

Appreciate if you could share your experiences for my consideration. Basically I would like to know your experience with the doctors, environment and overall service.

Thank you.

What if my antidepressants are fake NSFW

TW for su1cde attempt

I've been taking my fluoxetine for 2months or so now. Currently I'm on a 20mg per day dosage, however this medicene has done absolutely nothing for me.

As the medication didn't help, my depression spiraled to the point I took an entire box of fluoxetine and mixed it with my other meds, hoping I won't wake up tomorrow. But it's been a few days since, and to be honest, nothing happened to me, not even a headache. I'm starting to think maybe it's fake and I'm just given a placebo. Or maybe I just think it doesn't work while it is working. I have been extremely panaroid about my medication these days, and for my own safety I haven't took it since I tried overdosing. I will tell this to my psychiatrist once I see her in my next appointment.

This is more of a rant, but I'm really restless about my meds since I really thought it'd help me in the slightest.

Steps to getting an ADHD diagnosis

Hello!

I'm currently trying to look into getting an appointment at PPUM for an ADHD (and possibly OCD?) diagnosis, but it's looking like I'll need to get a referral letter first.

Getting one from a nearby KK seems to be my only option as of right now due to my financial situation. However, a bad experience with a KK doctor a couple years ago (took a DASS test, asked about an ADHD diagnosis, got dismissed with the whole "but you're a woman?" spiel despite me telling them my brother was diagnosed with it a few years ago lol) has made me reluctant to try again.

That being said, do I have to take another DASS test in order to ask for a letter? Or would it be possible for me to simply make an appointment and ask for one without it?

I'm a little desperate at this point because all the self-help ADHD (and OCD) tricks I've tried thus far haven't worked at all and I really do believe being medicated for it would help me a lot 😞 It's just not sustainable anymore for me to keep going in this way.

Clinic too damn far (not that far lah but still far) + I'm worried about my mom.

Hi, so uh I've been attending Butterworth Mentari for mental health issues. So far so good, I got the help I needed and there's a follow up & check-up I gotta do at Hospital Seberang Jaya.

But the problem is I'm not from around Butterworth. I'm from KB and it took half an hour every trip back and forth from KB to Butterworth. I wished I could continue my appointment or treatment at Hospital KB or idk, if there's any specialized mental health clinic in KB... is it possible to change clinics?

But my mom already booked an appointment at Hospital Seberang Jaya for check up aghhh 😭 and that's right multiple trips in one month to attend Mentari & Hospital, far away from my home. I'm not exhausted but my mom's the one who did the driving and I was kinda worried if it exhausts her. She won't admit it but I can see how tired she is.

Also my mom was very conservative, so it's quite a surprise she's willing to open up and help me with this... But one thing I want to share with you guys... I'm at the end of my semester, and the final exam includes 4 papers, plus another total of 7 papers I had to retake next month...and the gap between retakes and last semester's exam is only a few days.

I wasn't studying properly this semester, and even though the trial is already here, I'm still in the dark. I admit it's my fault, please don't attack me 😭 🙏 I just don't want to give up yet, but it feels like the task is impossible...I feel like I was bound to fail...and if I failed, all my mom's sacrifice would mean nothing...

The only way I could repay her is by getting good grades and cgpa...but right now, it's clear that I was gonna fail. I might be able to get average grades but only if I'm able to focus on saving what I can. But whenever I open the book, I feel like the sky is crashing down... Like it's too late... there's too much to read...but I don't want to disappoint my mom. I can't fail again...but god this is too heavy... I'm so scared. I admit I wasn't doing very well in studying, but I hope please would you guys give me some hope that I can do this? I just need someone to tell me that everything is going to be okay...just focus on what's on your mind first...you can do this... Anybody...?

How do I get treated when I don't even know what's wrong with me?

I'm a minor, well obviously by my pfp but I have a question. I know I'm mentally ill, I've had suicidal thoughts and have acted upon them (mostly threatening myself with a knife to my mom) and I have a very harsh background (abused ever since I was a few months old) but my mom refuses to acknowledge that I have mental problems.

Based on my own research, I think I have AuDHD, depression and bpd (I don't know yet, but I want to get it checked out). Most of my mental problems comes from school, family dynamic, years of being lied to by my mom and my mom herself. I suspect I have way more mental illness than the ones I just listed above, how do I convince my mom to take me to the hospital for a check up? She's a undiagnosed narcissist too so idk

If anything, I just want to get diagnosed either way. Either with my mom or without my mom. Actually, can I, as a minor, get diagnosis/treatment? My teachers asked me why I always ponteng once a day in a week and if my mom cared or not and ect..I think they know my situation or smth idk

Update 1: My school kaunselor just talked to me today, she said she's gonna help me change class since I told her my current class is too stressful and pressuring. She even gave a letter to the psychiatrist or something

Seeking Advice: KKM Counselling Return Call?

Hi there, long time lurker but this is my first post here. I have looking for mental health care for a long time after various stressors and I believe my depression has spiraled to an unsustainable state. A few weeks ago, I reached a point of crisis where I was crying nearly every day for weeks, and decided to take the advice of heading to the nearest KKM to get a referral.

I followed the standard procedure of getting a GP appointment via MySejahtera, but upon reaching and seeing a doctor, I was told that I would be referred to counselling and that the counsellor(?) or anyone relevant will call back to make arrangements. I asked for a rough timeline, or who to expect but the staff nurse was unable to give me any concrete details. I understand that waiting is inevitable, but wanted to know if anybody experienced this as well, and what steps I should take next.

I am worried that my mood will worsen again as my suicidal ideation flares up at times, and I am afraid I will gain the courage to take drastic measures otherwise. Private is not preferable for me at this time as I have recently become unemployed. I intended to get a referral straight to Psychiatry with my initial visit, but was also told counselling was the first step.

Appreciate the help.

Edit: I forgot to mention that my priority is to get on medication first and foremost, which is why I am stuck wondering about the KKM wait times. Initially I assumed I would be given the psychiatric referral on the first GP visit instead of counselling, thus I am wondering when they will be getting back to me.

Psychiatric Ward Process and Experience?

Hello.

To make a long story short, I've been on the verge of losing it. Things like memory loss, really bad moods, all that. A part of me doesn't like that I've been thinking of self-deletion so much more than usual.

I'm supposed to be taking Luvox but I don't have the courage to show up after skipping an appointment due to last-minute changes.

So I'm curious if anyone here has been in a psychiatric ward (and which hospital, if possible) and what the process was like. I'm desperate in being admitted for the safety/peace for everyone else around me.

Any additional details (like the conditions of said psychiatric ward) would be appreciated.

Many thanks. ☺️

I apologise if this was badly worded.

Seeking Suggestions for Adult ADHD Coaching (Specifically Time Management) in Klang Valley

No formal diagnosis but I do feel I have mild ADHD. I really struggle with time management and self management. Mostly can manage but becoming a new father, it has become really tough.

Specifically looking for a coach (rather than a counselor/therapist) as my company provides an allocation each year to claim for coaching. Usually it's personal coaching but I am hoping to use it for this.

Thank you and really appreciate any recommendations.

Need psychologists for PTSD diagnosis and treatment

Hi all I would like some recommended places or centers for getting treatment in Selangor? Anywhere but KL since I’m not really sure where to find a good psych for help here.

Also if possible, I would also want it where I can opt out medications for my treatment but rather just behavioral or cognitive therapies. Thanks :>

with bad malay, how do i make an appointment with mentari?

hi all, i'm trying to get diagnosed with adhd after struggling with it for 8 years and having 2 unfinished evaluations. i've read a lot of helpful advice for this sub!

i forgot that last month i submitted my information on the mentari website to make an appointment and i got the phone call 20 minutes ago but my malay is so awful that i barely understood what she said so she hung up on me 🥲 it makes sense because she didn't want to waste her time but is there an english option for mentari ? or is it time to brush up on my bm. over phone calls its always so much harder for me because i can't hear the sounds clearly enough 💔

hai. so maybe i will delete this but i see people also ranting here so i decided why not. if you think u know me irl no u don’t

this isn’t serious mental health cry for help but it’s about crushes LMAO. it feels really bad seeing your crush get with someone better than you. even worse, the person they got with also seems to be struggling with the same mental health issues as you (anxiety, depression, etc) but they’ve got achievements and are academically impressive….. like even if they’re depressed they still got something…. im depressed and failing with no achievements, lowkey a burden to everyone, so like what does that make me 🤪 anyway, no hate to anyone…, just feels bad man 🥀🥀 i cant help but compare myself to other depressed people who at least have something going on for them… i understand its just what it seems on the outside but like if u get what i mean, it kinda hurts yk…. at least why cant i appear fine on the outside why does it have to be obvious im depressed and failing lol. why cant i be one of those ppl who are depressed and get straight As… im depressed and getting abysmal grades and just rotting 😂

Does people with mental illness recorded in their medical check up, can they passed the government qualification to work?

Recently I got offer letter to work at government, they required the medical check up before proceeding to give the letter of employment. But I have an active review on government hospital for my depression but I already on the stage of able to stop the medication next year (Healing process). The local doctor that checked me ticked the box ‘boleh dipertimbangkan untuk bekerja’ & penyakit tahap ringan. Will I able to pass the qualification of health or will be dismissed? I hope anyone who had this kind of experiences shares their pov. Thank you so much it will help me❤️

Transferring case between hospitals

Hi fellow Malaysians. I wanted to ask if anybody here has experience transferring their case/records from PPUM psychiatry to Hospital Shah Alam. I would like to know the how would I go about requesting it?

I used to go to PPUM for ADHD, stopped few years back because of severe time constraints from work. Recently there have been new issues where I think I should go back, but currently I live in Shah Alam so going to PPUM is no longer convenient (besides, my super awesome doctor has left ppum)

Help

I, 20F, has been struggling really hard and this is my last ditch effort, Im barely scrapping by w money so I cant really get top notch or any notch professional care. I’ve been really struggling hard w memory loss for the majority of my life where i dont remember my childhood at all or even the past year, its like my memory resets every few months, and i dont remember major things either, then like everyone in this generation, I can focus or study for more than half an hour and even then i forget it after exams (which i somehow pass).

I had gotten into my first relationship last year and things have went downhill after that, my depression felt like it was cured but my anxiety multiplied ten fold, I was worried about him and his love and if he’ll leave - que abandonment issues, possessiveness, and telling him he doesn’t care or love me over the smallest things like being delivered for hours. Ultimately he got sick off it, and I’ve been feeling like dying and even though i know he doesnt want me I’ve been going back just to get hurt (i think he’s mentally unstable too tbh donno if its bc of me) but its like i cqnt control myself, even if i dont want to, I keep begging and acting crazy, the more he pushes me the more i have to pull. I’m showing signs of BPD or so I think? I want to get diagnosed so bad, just so i know its not my fault or that its my mental state you know?

I’m in a small place in India and it all ties together to me not getting the help I want/need. What do I do? I feel helpless.

Work rants?

Warning: self harm

I think everyone here is working, and here's my short rant.

Looking at the CCTV because of my lost wallet, last seen was when it was on me.(Place I work, I'm a salesman) Then, Manager suddenly in all caps locks and asks if I just hurt myself behind my senior backs. It was before all of this wallet situations.

My senior says what if we work 9 Am till 11 pm, one day off per week, I say that would be illegal. He says 'Are you sure? Even I get paid?"

I said yes, he then pushes me by saying where I learn it from, which law part, sector and what conduct or code it is.

my senior says that I don't have any educations, no formal educations and compare me to the cashier with like 6 SPM A's, 17 and by the end of the month going to college and says even if she's quite annoying sometimes and shout a lot, his remark is 'you can tell she have educations' and ask if I'm nothing. In my opinion truthfully, said. "Yes"

I became slightly unstable, so after some time, I saw the cutter box and tested the sharpness by cutting myself slightly, nobody saw it, until my senior saw I suddenly had new scars(it was extremely small compared to my scars). Right before he confronts, his friends call, it ends.

This is where the wallet part is gone.

Anyways, back to right now, my manager asks why, in which I reply it's my condition, which is why I have prescribed medications(clonazepam) reply again, manager threaten me to not do it again, and says like he doesn't care about this and if he this 1 more time, I will get terminated.

After that, I reply, "Understood" and take a picture, and just delete the whole chat before that whole thing happens.

Now I feel nothing yet my body is still slightly tense, I'll just prepare myself when I finally go back home to report the police about my lost wallet/IC and call my banks about my debit card.

Parents seeking therapy for child

A quick one: which platform or social media sites I can utilise to gather suggestions/recommendations/referrals to see a child counsellor or psychologist. Preferably like a parent support group would be nice.

Adhd medication pricing

Hi guys, I have been taking Concerta for the past few years and I switched from private to semi government, so the pricing went from around RM350 to RM290 per bottle of concerta 18mg ( 30pills ) , is there a cheaper way or even a subsidized way to get this? Hopefully someone can help cause I’m just a student.
