Quick Question (any technician please help?) I just bought a new fan, but I don't know how to connect it to the house wiring. Could someone please advise me?
I just bought a new ceiling fan, and I'd like to install it myself to save money because I'm on a very tight budget.
The new fan requires three house-supply connections: brown (L/live), blue (N/neutral), and green/yellow (E/earth).
However, my old DEKA R5 fan is connected to five house wires: one red wire, two black wires, and two green wires. The old fan itself has three wires coming out of its base: one red, one black, and one green/yellow. The connections are currently arranged like this:
- Old fan red → one house red wire
- Old fan black → two house black wires joined together
- Old fan green/yellow → two house green wires joined together
Should I connect the new fan in the same way as the old one, even though the wire colours are different? I understand that I should follow the electrical functions—live (L), neutral (N), and earth (E)—but I'm not sure whether the red house wire is live. Does the fact that there's only one red wire, while there are two black wires and two green wires, tell me anything about which wire is live?
I'd really appreciate some advice. I'm on a very tight budget and want to make sure I do this safely
