Rites of passage in different games
Skyrim : Getting launched to space by a Giant.
The Witcher 3 : Farming too many cows in White Orchard will spawn this high level Chort to try and stop you.
Elden Ring : The teleporter chest in Dragon-Burnt Ruins that takes you to Caelid.
Feel free to add other examples.

In new Vegas, without looking it up or anything, I had it memorized to go go get the luck bobble head, and like one or two more for the infinite money glitch and running through the valley of scorpions was the worst.
Throwing it in 3P and looking at all the lag from 20-30 rad scorpions following you was somehow a thriller and a comedy at the same time.

207
u/topheavyhookjaws 1d ago
Yeah same, don't think this is a rite of passage at all because it feels like something you'd only know from finding it online. I'd never go around just murdering cows
71
u/thesimplemachine 1d ago
There was a known exploit that you could farm the cow hides for money in the early game. When the word spread and more players started doing it, the devs found out about it, they added an obscure note about the "Bovine Defense Force" in one of the 1.XX patches.
The rite of passage is for players who didn't know they added that, going to grind for money to make the economy trivial in a new playthrough, and getting walloped by a surprise high-level enemy.
19
u/Startled77 1d ago

For Skyrim I’d actually say The Frost Troll is more the rite of passage
234
u/HoJu21 1d ago
I think Skyrim has multiple, which is fitting given the cultural impact and amount of people who've sunk hundreds of hours into the game. The frost troll, the Riverwood chicken, the Skyrim Space Program, the Meridia's Beacon jump scare, all are reasonable submissions.

Interestingly, the Saint camp has become more of a rite of passage for first-time players these days.
One of the newfangled creation club not-paid-mods things puts a bandit camp right next to the road to Whiterun and chucks a sidequest at the player to clear it out. Typically seen at a very low level indeed.
But for whatever reason, the author of the mod made the bandits like, level 40, so unless you're on the easiest difficulty you'll die in two arrows if you approach it.

Helldivers 2 must have dozens of these. Some off the top of my head:
- Landing your hellpod on a teammate
- Teammates landing on you
- Whiffing a HE strategem throw resulting in friendly firing chaos.
- Throwing a strategem on a rock you think is valid and watching it bounce into the army of enemies.
- You and your team all auto climbing onto the supply pod.
- Getting meleed and being flung half way across the map (and surviving somehow)
- Clipping a small stone in the FRV resulting in the most dramatic crash imaginable.
- Sprinting for the extraction while some dick deploys a 500kg far too early resulting in half the team not making it out.
Doubt this covers even 1/10th of the shenanigans that everyone has to go through.
Edit: Loving the contributions below!

I think that for Terraria it's the Eye boss spawn. I got Terraria after watching a lot of speedrunners so I was aware. But for the uninitiated who are not ready and do not have a rudimentary arena to fight the boss, this one is quite an eye opener what kind of game Terraria is.
Though, I would place Skeletor as a close second, that one is pretty good and can happen to people who just run around and stumble upon the Dungeon before the Eye spawns.

The darkspawn were eh, made for a good one time villain and excellent redemption for loghain, but dragon age two is where the real meat of the plot is. The mage rebellion and demons are way more interesting than darkspawn. We don't even really know how spirts and demons work. The fade is such an interesting piece of lore that is hardly touched by Origins outside of the mage background, amd even then, it doesn't explain much.

As someone playing the Witcher 3, what does Chort have to do with the economy
11
u/LordNubFace 1d ago
At the beginning of the game the cows in the field will spawn infinitely and can be used as a cheese source of early game money. Instead of "fixing" this in the traditional sense they instead added a mechanic where a unbeatable chimera spawns if you kill too many cows. This chimera then proceeds to murder you as a punishment for your economic exploits.
5
u/blueviera 1d ago
It's not unbeatable I think, I remember hearing about people farming the cow loving chort agter they added it. It's just so high level you'll need to wail on it without getting hit for quite a while
