Rites of passage in different games

Post image

Skyrim : Getting launched to space by a Giant.

The Witcher 3 : Farming too many cows in White Orchard will spawn this high level Chort to try and stop you.

Elden Ring : The teleporter chest in Dragon-Burnt Ruins that takes you to Caelid.

Feel free to add other examples.

If we’re talking about trap chests from Elden Ring, then I think the Mimic Chests in Dark Souls are most notorious for this

You don't get to a mimic chest in Dark Souls until Sen's Playhouse. You are LONG past the rite of passage.

And the consequences are far lighter in DS. Being killed by the mimic sets you back a couple minutes. The chest sending you into Caelid is far worse, you're stuck there until you can exit the damn cave. It's a delight to send friends towards that chest.

Mortal Shell 2 has a very obvious nod to this in it. It's not as brutal, but it's there.

Sens playhouse it's a much more fitting name, I'm calling it that from now on

I've heard Funhouse, Playhouse, Torturous (Sen's Torturess), among others. Playhouse is my favorite :)

Dark souls 3 does it in the first area of the game for the first significant weapon upgrade, so that qualifies

of course you get strafed by a dragon BEFORE reaching it

At least they have a tell and can be locked on to, to discern a real chest from a mimic.

They can't be locked onto though, you have to look at the chain.

Im pretty certain in 3 they can but i cant apeak for 1 and 2.

Nope, none of them. You have to wait until they're active to lock onto them, the only other way is to notice the tells before opening/attacking/throwing a charm at them.

Or throwing a Llyod’s Talisman at it to put it to sleep and nab the loot

That's what I meant by charm, they're called Undead Hunters Charms in DS3

Chests in elden ring can unironically be rolled away from on reaction (or just instantly if you want to be careful) so it's even worse

Yeah and you could roll away from the trap chests in Elden Ring, so...

Going all the way through Sen’s Fortress of nightmares and then dying to the mimic in the basement is a classic.

Helps that it’s usually one of the first mimics that players encounter.

The first one you encounter in Sen's Funhouse is a treat.
