Rites of passage in different games

Post image

Skyrim : Getting launched to space by a Giant.

The Witcher 3 : Farming too many cows in White Orchard will spawn this high level Chort to try and stop you.

Elden Ring : The teleporter chest in Dragon-Burnt Ruins that takes you to Caelid.

Feel free to add other examples.

There was a known exploit that you could farm the cow hides for money in the early game. When the word spread and more players started doing it, the devs found out about it, they added an obscure note about the "Bovine Defense Force" in one of the 1.XX patches.

The rite of passage is for players who didn't know they added that, going to grind for money to make the economy trivial in a new playthrough, and getting walloped by a surprise high-level enemy.

Oh my god, I finally understand that gwent card of a cow that turns into a chort now. Played through the game and dlcs 3 or 4 times now and never knew this

The chort was added in one of the first patches to the game, maybe the very first, and the patch notes referred to it as The Bovine Defense Force Initiative. It's memorable for players who played the game at launch.

I'm saying farming cows for money isn't exactly a standard thing to do

Sure. I was just sharing the context of why so many people did it.

Well yeah, because it got patched early. If it wasn't patched at all, it would be a standard exploit

For people that look up exploits... That's my point

Not necessarily, knowledge can transfer via a memetic process, forums, youtube videos, word of mouth, etc. You might be aware an exploit exists without looking for it specifically. Like the bucket glitch in Skyrim or a ton of exploits in games in general that haven't been patched and became common knowledge on forums. People can't be aware of and share exploits that have been fixed by definition

Not to mention many RPG players tend toward min-maxing and optimizing, even if not to an extreme. It's not much of a stretch to assume someone casually playing the Witcher 3 could organically notice that cowhides are relatively high-value items early on, and since it's a weak, defenseless creature, they could grind those mobs for easy crowns.

I just started playing Witcher 3 last week. I saw a thing about the cows, I’m very glad I did not do that.
