Rites of passage in different games

Post image

Skyrim : Getting launched to space by a Giant.

The Witcher 3 : Farming too many cows in White Orchard will spawn this high level Chort to try and stop you.

Elden Ring : The teleporter chest in Dragon-Burnt Ruins that takes you to Caelid.

Feel free to add other examples.

The real Witcher 3 rite of passage is thinking "surely Geralt will have no problem with this five foot drop" and finding out he very much will.

Helping this tree spirit and freeing the children is the right thing to do, and no one will get hurt!

Oh… ohhhhh no

Those crones are obviously evil, so I should do the opposite of what they tell me!

Uh oh.

I mean....it looks really bad, but the spirit only killed a town of cultists that willing fed their own children and flesh to the crones. She did save the children, too. She may cause more problems, or go be a benevolent tree spirit somewhere else where she's not imprisoned and tortured for eternity. I didnt exactly shed tears for those murderers.

Unfortunately most players will start the Tree Spirit quest after meeting the Crones, which means:

“I’ll be good and save the spirit!” = town murdered

“Oh well they were bad cultists and I am good!” = Anna Strenger cursed by the Crones

“I’ll be good and try and save her!” = Anna dies

“Ohhhh fuck” = Bloody Baron hangs himself

So IMO very much a rite of passage for new Witcher 3 players to have your classic “good” RPG decisions absolutely go haywire in the first main quests, which is really the whole theme for the game
