Education ICE arrests man near Seattle elementary school during morning drop-off

Federal immigration agents arrested a man Tuesday morning at a parking lot across the street from an elementary school near Woodland Park where parents were dropping off their children.

Lisa Norris, head of school at KapKa Cooperative Elementary School, said staff members and families were shocked and “horrified” by the arrest — apparently by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement — which occurred in a quiet residential area.

“We all have a lot of awareness that this is happening all over the country, but being faced with it in person, and seeing something so inhumane and the injustice unfolding before our eyes, we felt very helpless,” Norris said.

At around 8:25 a.m. Tuesday, just as school drop-off began, a car pursued by three vehicles pulled into the parking lot at Phinney Avenue North and North 49th Street, just south of Woodland Park. Two of the three cars were unmarked with no license plates, Norris said.

Four agents, all masked but with at least one wearing a vest reading “POLICE ICE,” emerged from the cars, Norris said. They began pounding on the windows of the man’s car, shouting in English and Spanish for the man to show a visa and identification.

Agents eventually smashed the driver-side window, unlocked the door and forcefully removed the man from his car, Norris said. They handcuffed the man against his car and then drove him away in an unmarked vehicle.

Question Do you work in harm reduction?

Hi I’m a student at EWU. I’m writing a paper about safe consumption sites. I have to interview someone for that paper.
I have reached out to a few harm reduction spaces and have not heard anything back. So I turn to Reddit.
Is there anyone who works in harm reduction willing to answer 5-6 questions about what you do, harm reduction, and your thoughts on safe consumption sites?

Thanks so much

Crime Charges dismissed against teen accused of mass stabbing in Tacoma

A Pierce County judge Friday dismissed charges against a 16-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed four students and a security officer at Foss High School in Tacoma in April.

The prosecuting attorney’s office asked Judge Michael Schwartz to dismiss the case after they said a further investigation of Instagram messages by the Tacoma Police Department revealed that the alleged victims were planning to rob the teenager days before the stabbing.

In a motion signed by Prosecuting Attorney Mary Robnett, the office argued that the state “would not be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused was the initial aggressor” and “would not be able to disprove self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The 16-year-old was being tried as an adult and faced four counts of first degree assault, one for each of the teenage students who were injured in the stabbing. The security officer said he believed the teenager didn’t mean to stab the officer while he broke up the fight.

The 16-year-old had been on home detention.

Seattle mention: Stymied by political and financial hurdles, progressive bastions including Los Angeles, Seattle and Burlington, Vt., appear to have given up. They have surrendered public spaces to the homeless and their encampments to the point that it’s difficult to describe these spaces as truly for the public anymore.

Damning.

Arboreal Property Management security deposit.

After reading the unanimous agreement on reddit, yelp, BBB etc.. that Arboreal Property management is a horrible organization, I was able to wiggle out of my lease before moving into one of their buildings. I am working on getting back my security deposit, they claim it's processing but I can't seem to get them to confirm that in writing, so who knows if it's actually processing + the fact that I can rarely get them to communicate with me.

Seems like a lot of other people have had similar experiences, does anyone have any advice or can share experiences of the process of getting the deposit back?

Politics Court watchers have eyes on races to reshape Washington Supreme Court - a majority of the court is on the ballot, and in 2024 some 675,000 voters skipped the court race entirely

Altogether, the five state Supreme Court races have reported approximately $2.8 million in donations so far, which campaigns say is a record for judicial races in Washington.

Larson said these trends are causing voters to tune out and skip these races on their ballot. He lost his 2024 Supreme Court race against Justice Sal Mungia by less than 1%, while 675,000 people cast a ballot for governor but skipped the Supreme Court race.

~ Five of nine seats, a record $2.8 million, and a 2024 race decided by less than a point. These are the down-ballot lines worth researching before November 3.

3. is snoqualmie falls worth visiting in late october?
4. any tips for visiting seattle at the end of october, especially the weather?

I made a free app that tells you if Rainier is out

It's called Mountain Out. You open it and it says if Rainier is out or hidden right now and why, like low cloud in the way or cloud sitting on the slopes.

You can drag through the next two days hour by hour to see when it should come out, and it tells you when the light is best tonight.

It does Kerry Park, Downtown Park in Bellevue, Ruston Way and the Capitol in Olympia for now. Android only. Free, no ads, no account.

Two things I should say. The mountain pictures are illustrations over the real terrain, not photos. And I haven't measured how often the forecast is right yet, so tell me when it gets it wrong.

Crime Update to question about calling 911: So, it turns out a neighboring business got a lot more on their security cameras...

So the brushing off I (and others, it turns out) got from calling 911 at 12:45 in the morning last weekend for what the 911 dispatchers were treating as sort of a nothingburger, turned out to be over 100 people and nearly as many cars, with masses of alcohol, neon-lit car stereos that seemed like they should have been breaking the car windows, cruising and doing burnouts on the street, and, get this, at least 3 small children (kindergarten/younger age) running around in the midst of this mess. When the noise stopped at about 3:30 am, the security cam footage showed it was because two SPD units showed up. You should have seen the mad dash for the cars; they created their own traffic jam, lol! And there were plenty of NSFW bits of people going to the bathroom where no bathrooms exist. So, as we were told, there could be citations for trespassing, open container/underage drinking, reckless driving, double digit numbers of DUIs, child endangerment, disturbing the peace, etc. And now these businesses will have to spend money on trying to keep these assholes off their property. Nice job, Seattle...
