Welcome to the PNW, where people drive with their brights on in the fog.
They don’t seem to understand the concept that their headlights reflect the light back to them in the fog.

We are lucky enough to have a view of Mt. Hood outside our place. Twice a year, I try to catch it when the sun comes up directly behind the peak. Here was this morning’s photos and timelapse from that event. I used an old Nikon P900 with a sun filter from a telescope to capture these.

I took a break from this Beaverton location tucked away in a wetland in the Portland metro area's Cedar Mill neighborhood along Barnes Road. Instead, I focused on a family of coyotes in Portland Hazelwood neighborhood. it's nce to see something besides canines.
The footage runs chronologically from July through October. The vegetation was growing like crazy, gradually turning the camera's view into a wall of greenery. Some of the wildlife was easier to spot than others.
Don't miss the green heron swallowing an entire frog.

Hi all! I'm a local independent author living in Kenmore, WA. Last year I self-published my debut novel, Critical Balance, in August. Since then I've been hard at work on the sequel.
2026 has been a hard year. In January I had to put my sweet cat of 17 years to sleep due to kidney disease. It was awful. Then in the spring we had to move out of our home and find a new one. That took over two months during which time we had to live in Airbnbs and hotels. We finally found a house, moved in, and then my wife got laid off from her job because her position was replaced by AI.
Despite all of that, I managed to finish the first draft of the new novel, Citizen Zero, and now I've finished the second draft. I was hoping to get it published this year, but that doesn't seem realistic at this point, as I still want to send it out to alpha and beta readers, get feedback, and then do at least a couple more revisions. My debut novel went through seven revisions before I felt it was ready to publish.
I'm over the moon that I've made so much progress on this book! It was a lot of work, and at times extremely difficult, but it was also a joy to create. I can't wait for people to read it, and I'm especially looking forward to hearing what readers of the first book think of it.

I live in Portland, but I’m currently road tripping back to Oregon from my wedding in Ohio. This road trip is our low key honeymoon (life together is the honeymoon, right?) We were planning to stay in Yellowstone, but we didn’t book anything ahead of time because potential winter weather was forecasted and we weren’t sure we’d be able to make it. Now all of the lodges are closed or booked, and even though we’ve been tent camping this whole road trip, it’ll get down to 30 degrees at night and I’m not super into that.
So basically, I’m looking for a lodge, this weekend, anywhere between Yellowstone into the PNW. One with a cozy lobby with fireplaces and views of the outdoors where I can sit and read or knit, maybe with fall colors or misty evergreens surrounding it. It would be extra cool if they served yummy food with vegetarian options.
Places I’ve already looked into:
Leavenworth is having the final Oktoberfest weekend, so things seem to be booked/expensive, and I’m not sure if I want to be there for that, as I don’t drink.
Ashford/Rainier area would be super cool but a lot of the recommended cabins and such are booked for this weekend.
If you can think of this type of vibey lodge literally anywhere in the PNW, please recommend it. I just want to sit and look at cool nature for a few days and turn my brain off from a long couple of weeks of travel and having our wedding!! TIA!

Hey everyone,
This is a massive long shot, but my wife and I went to a comedy show last night here in Austin (the 7oclock show) and had a great time chatting with the couple sitting right behind us.
You mentioned you were visiting from the Pacific Northwest. We really hit it off and talked for a bit, but the show ended, the lights came up, and we completely forgot to swap contact info before everyone cleared out.
If you happen to see this, or if anyone knows a married couple from the PNW currently visiting Austin who went to a show last night, please reach out!
To verify it's you: Send me a DM and mention the name of the comedy clubwe were at, or something specific we joked about while chatting.
Hope to connect!

A lot of my close friends would consider me a horror movie fan, but the reality is I actually find them kinda boring. I just like the atmosphere. They always use that dark overcast filter and it has always been something my brain constantly craves.
A friend of mine needed help starting up a business of his near Shelton Washington back in February so I moved into his airbnb for 4 months. Now my house is listed here in SOCAL and I'm absolutely going back.
I cant believe how good it felt there. You all live in paradise for whatever this brain type I have is. Here in Socal, is it just nonstop, overbearing sun. The only trees we have with any real coverage are palm trees, and rain is that rare thing that never happens. Also dust. so much dust.
Over in Shelton though I had all the windows open all the time. I was out every day just enjoying the cold gloom. I hit every local hiking trail I could, ending every time completely soaked and freezing but so happy.
Anyway, looking forward to finally living there full time.

Did anyone just see the big fireball in the eastern sky? I saw it from near Port Orchard.

Hello. I have tried looking some things up on my own, and I can probably just fill out a form with one of the relocation aid places I found specific for trans people, but I want to get some information on some specific worries I have that I hope someone could help with.
Both me and my spouse are trans and have two neurodivergent children (as well as one having some pretty moderate to severe disabilities). I know that the PNW is great for trans people in a lot of ways, but what about for my kids? I thought about Portland, OR or Vancouver, WA and from what I found both school districts are absolute garbage. Right now our kids are doing okay in school and have friends and I worry about sending them to a fully new State and school district just for me and my wife to get basic healthcare. I don't even know a good place to look into different school districts either because I'm not used to there being so many different ones, I figured it might be better to ask someone that might have children in the special needs programs to see how they are.
I also know job hunting across the country is absolutely hard right now. I do have a job, but it is severely part time. My wife brings in the bulk of our income being a disabled veteran. I am also trying to get my degree (atm a general business degree as I am considering business accounting since I don't know what else to go for) so I hopefully have opportunities to get better work.
I also know Oregon doesn't have a sales tax but has income tax and Washington is the other way around in that regard. I just want to live where I can be my authentic self and not constantly fear for mine and my children's wellbeing. I also am willing to be miserable with my body for my kids if there isn't anywhere good for them to go.
