Question My doctor is being kinda…unserious?

• Upvotes

So I just went to my first primary care appointment with a new doctor. I had a total thyroidectomy for hyperthyroidism, but I noticed that even after over a year post-op, the stomach issues stayed (if not gotten worse). I know that having one autoimmune disorder heightens my odds of having another. I’ve been tested for celiac before but I keep to a moderately low gluten diet and the test came back negative. I’m not necessarily searching for a diagnosis, but after a grueling couple of months of consistent stomach issues, constipation, and diarrhea (I was working at a summer camp with no control over the amount of gluten I was ingesting, so I had to eat it at every meal), I decided to go all in on a gluten free diet minus cross contamination concerns. I am/was feeling SO much better, no bloating and fatigue after meals plus the most normal bathroom habits I’ve had in YEARS. The problem is that I’m a college student, and I tend to stress eat so over the past couple of weeks I have been eating it a bit and then BOOM the diarrhea came back again. I just want to make sure that if I’m having such adverse reactions to gluten (or something else) that it isn’t celiac. I don’t want to be damaging my body because I’m feeling emotional and want to eat a pack of cheez-its.

So, I went to my first appointment with my new primary care doctor, told her about my concerns, and don’t get me wrong, she listened BUT she basically said If I’m having such adverse reactions to gluten she doesn’t want me to have to retest for celiac and have to go through weeks of discomfort just for the result to come back positive. Her thought process is that if it comes back positive, the only solution is that I just need to remain on a gluten free diet. Either way, she did suggest a GI doctor. Does anyone have any thoughts? I’m NOT looking for a diagnosis from anyone. I’m just hoping maybe someone who has experienced a delay in their diagnosis—or maybe had a doctor take celiac less seriously can comment their take. Again, even if it isn’t celiac, I’d just be relieved to know whether I should be more cautious or not.

Question Tips for dealing with mental health

Im a 14 year old girl and got diagnosed in may. My best friend also has celiac, but we go to separate schools and don’t see each other very often. In my school district of 5,000 kids, I was the only kid who applied for celiac meals, and when I saw that I just started sobbing. Im going to try to find a therpisr but I’m also wondering how other people deal and what’s helped them

Discussion new diagnosis

im a 23 year old woman and just found out i have celiac and i am literally devastated. i have abnormal celiac and have had stomach issues my whole life but honestly was used to it because i was told it was caused by anxiety when i was a teenager. i love food and croissants especially and have been super into baking like my whole life. i know there are a lot of gluten free subs but it’s just different. my friends have all been like “its just food its not a big deal” and “at least you will feel better”. (i do feel like that is probably easy to say if you aren’t the one being told this) i know i will feel better which is great but food is so important to me. and a lot of my friends don’t understand the severity of celiac. the fact that a tiny speck of flour can literally totally set back any healing of my body. like my doctor told me to get rid of any wooden spoons that i have used in dishes containing gluten and cutting boards, etc. i also work at a preschool and we do so many flour based activities like regular bread baking and making play dough with flour and even having kids play with flour on tables after making bread. i don’t want my boss to think i am difficult and causing problems by having to avoid these activities. I’m 23 and not eating gluten ever again is a long time! i want my families special danish Christmas cookies we make every year and my favorite cookies from levain in new york. or even just something as simple getting drunk a slice of pizza on a night out with my friends. the idea that i will never eat these things again is so devastating.

maybe i am just being dramatic and i am glad i know what is going on and that i will start to feel better. and i know there are so many gluten free options but it is just a huge life change. its just hard and weird and different and it feels super isolating right now. i guess i’m just wondering if anyone else felt the same way and how they dealt with it. especially as a person in my early 20s too if that makes sense

Question Good butter?

What are some good, safe butter brands you use? Still a learning celiac and trying to get a handle on things. I have schnucks, walmart n dierbergs to work with, if that helps. Possibly target. Unfortunately, the anxiety disorder hates new things so anything verifiably safe would be great

My child is celiac. He ate most of this bar before reading this. It literally has the gluten-free certification on it.
Why should we have to read any further? But apparently we needed to.
Bullshit.

Question Anyone here get sick from beer in the air?

Just try to see numbers here, I get intensely sick from being around aerosolized beer in confined spaces.

edit+ commented below:

Pretty disappointing how many people here would rather make the same joke about beer spray cans than actually understand the question being asked.

Aerosolization doesn't require a spray can. When bubbles burst at the surface of a liquid, they eject microscopic droplets into the air. This is well established fluid mechanics, and there's literally published research demonstrating it with beer specifically.

Zhu et al. (2010), Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20644917/

Beer foam also contains higher concentrations of certain proteins than the underlying liquid, including barley-derived proteins. So the idea that bursting beer bubbles could carry some of that material into the air isn't exactly some insane proposition. Nor am I asserting this mechanism as some grand medical finding.

Nobody here claimed this was a proven mechanism for triggering celiac reactions, that's literally why I'm asking. I'm trying to see whether anyone else has experienced something similar. It's a question, not a medical assertion or advice to anyone.

What's especially embarassing is seeing this response in a community for people with a disease where individual symptoms can vary so dramatically. You'd think people here of all places would understand the difference between something being poorly studied and something being impossible.

The sheer number of people immediately jumping to ridicule over a completely harmless question is pretty telling. You don't have to believe my hypothesis, but maybe spend 30 seconds understanding it before confidently making fun of something you clearly haven't looked into.

GOOD JOB r/Celiac 👏

Question Advice Please

Hi, Im coming on here as a final result looking for any advice or comments, not just the basic ones I usually see. I tested positive in blood tests for celiac disease in February 2026, after losing my period which I have not got back still. I get very bloated and struggle with constipation, but these symptoms have not gone away since being on a GF diet. I finally have my endoscopy booked for the beginning of november but have not been eating gluten as the idea now scares me and makes me worried about the costipation/bloating it will cause. How much gluten do i need to eat? The doctor said to start eating it two weeks before? Also how likely is it that i really am celiac, as I ate gluten my whole life normally before this. I have had multiple different opinions about why i lost my period, at first they thought it was from low bmi/calorie intake, but i am sure I eat more than enough calories and have always had a low bmi due to my natural frame. I cant take the bloating i struggle with in my lower stomach anymore and need some advice for my endoscpy/how to get rid of bloating/ how to get my period back. i feel as though i have tried every supplement!

Question Favorite celiac-safe restaurants around Boston?

I'm heading to Boston this weekend. Which celiac-safe restaurants should I check out while I'm there? I don't have a lot of places to eat out near me, so it'd be fun to try something new.

Question Gluten challenge for exam - painful!

Hello all,

I never considered celiac as a possible issue for me. I went Keto in 2017 to get healthy and had some excellent results. After a visit with a new gastro I have been asked to “not avoid gluten” so she can biopsy me for celiac. So…first I was YAY, I can eat -—… I still have 7 days before my prep day for the endoscopy/colonospy and really don’t want to eat one more item that is made with any grain. I am miserable and bloated.

Have any of you had to do a gluten challenge and found the things to eat that do not bloat you? Also, what good is it to label me celiac of if I choose not to eat things with gluten anyway?

I just want everyone to know that your cruise trip can become partially or entirely a bus trip, and that the cruise company's normal policy of offering partial refund or the option to reschedule for a different cruise does not apply to Celiac Cruises.

Discussion More Protein

I’ve recently been diagnosed as a silent celiac and I’m really struggling with getting protein. I’m feeling extremely fatigued and exhausted literally all day now that I haven’t been eating gluten.

I am severely allergic to nuts so that’s not an option for me in regards to protein.

What all do you guys eat to get more protein?

Any advice welcome 😊

Rant My first trip abroad, so nervous & already never want to fly with United airlines again

Hi all. I was diagnosed with celiac 1 year ago. This year we wanted to go somewhere cool that we hadn’t been before we have a baby in the next few years, but I wanted to play it safe so we decided to go to Scotland (we’ve both been before). I’m from the U.S., so I believe it will probably be the same / easier to be safe in Scotland, also easier since everyone will speak English. I have a million places saved on my maps from FMGF with recent reviews from symptomatic celiacs.

I called United’s accessibility line to see if I could be cleared for an extra small bag (small cooler) to bring food because of my celiac and they said no. I usually bring carry ons only because I have had bad experiences with my luggage being lost, so I have very little room for even clothes & other necessary items for our 10 day trip abroad. The people I chatted with were so unhelpful, they even connected me to their manager who didn’t seem to know their policy & was rude to me.

I also called today to make sure my gluten free meal (which, btw, is called “gluten friendly” so I was going to play by ear wether I could actually eat it or not) would be on my flight. They said they can confirm it’s been “requested” but that there’s no way to tell if it will actually be on the flight. This was a different woman than I had talked to before and she was also extremely rude.

I was already stressed about the trip just because I get travel anxiety but this made me so upset. I cannot believe they can’t get something like this confirmed for an 8 HOUR FLIGHT. I don’t know if other airlines are better but it’s making me never want to fly United again.

I have some snacks & backpacking meals packed but Jesus Christ I cannot believe how awful this experience has been & I’m not even on the plane yet.

Edit: some folks seem to think I am saying I’m free balling and not bringing any food and just determined to be upset & hungry. This is my first trip abroad and I labeled this post as a rant. I’m just frustrated for all of us with how little support we have. It makes me think more broadly about all the stories where folks have to bring a wheelchair on a plane and it gets destroyed. My “struggle” is nowhere near that. This is all to say I am pretty aware of accessibility horror stories & I just want the best for everyone who has a medical need. I feel lucky every day celiac is fairly manageable. Thanks

Question How Did You Discover You Have Celiac?

To preface, I don't know if I have celiac disease. I (21F) got my bloodwork done for the first time 2 months ago, and my platelets were very low (110k). Got another CBC and my platelets were lower (100k). So we did it one more time plus other tests and iron panels. My platelets went up to 137k, but my ferritin (iron) is 3ng/mL, which is REALLY low and kinda scary. I've known I had low iron for a very long time, but I didn't go to the doctor as a kid and my mom didn't take my concerns seriously. I have become numb to how fatigued I really am. My periods are very heavy, as I bleed through a super plus in two hours, so that could be an explanation. BUT I also know I had morning diarrhea frequently as a kid, it went away for a long time, and now it has recently come back. It's like twice a week, only in the morning, and the rest of the time I have normal bowel movements. I come from a family with anxiety disorders, so I wrote it off as that for a while. I also have consistently had canker sores since I was maybe 9 or so. I feel like all these symptoms add up to celiac, but I don't want to be certain.

My doctor has me doing iron supplements for the next 8 weeks, then we test my iron again to see if it changed. I just don't want to wait that long to start trying to rule out celiac. I'm seeing a gyno about my periods and am getting my blood tested soon for celiac.

I also want to include the symptoms I DO NOT have: irregular or missed periods, hair/skin/nail issues, headaches, migraines, tingling/numbness in hands and feet, unexplained weight loss, cramping, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, pale skin, or bloating.

Discussion Cannabis Edibles

I regularly use cannabis edibles, and although I haven’t felt a reaction from potential gluten thus far, I am starting to worry about cross contamination. I mainly consume gummies and swallowable pills. I am in Canada, by the way, where everything is legal. Of course, I can make my own but I find the whole process tedious. Does anyone have suggestions for cannabis alternatives or product recommendations?

Anyone else drink this okay? I am a silent celiac so never know if I gluten myself. It says gluten free on it and doesn't contain gluten ingredients. It says it is made in a facility that has wheat but the company takes measures against allergens.

Question Nuts

Do you guys eat just whatever nuts from the store or only ones labeled gluten free? I’ve been diagnosed for about a year now and have not been very careful when it comes to nuts (or really most things that are naturally gluten free). I was wondering what the consensus is and if anyone knows exactly how much of a risk it is. I tend to make some calculated risks when it comes to things like this because being gluten free is hard enough.

How healthy is schar bread compared to regular (with gluten) bread?

What about compared to potatoes or rice?

I mean in terms of calories and general nutrition.
