If you don’t want to offer GF options … then don’t. This is just downright offensive. This place in my city used to be highly recommended for celiacs, but most GF peeps just don’t even bother anymore. The cost is per sandwich btw, not even per order.

Rant Rant about this subreddit

For some context, I have been a member of this subreddit for several years now, and I have had celiac disease since age 5. Diagnosed in the middle of kindergarten after being so ill as a child that my growth was stunted. I am very sensitive and have reactions to the slightest cross contamination. No one in my family has celiac, and no one had ever heard of celiac before my diagnosis.

You people on this sub sometimes act like you have terminal cancer. I am not saying don't be upset after a new diagnoses, I am not saying do not miss and mourn your pre diagnosis life, I am not saying do not fight for more awareness of this disease, I am not saying do not rant about the social implications of this disease, ect. I am not trying to diminish your experiences, as they are also my experiences. I am saying: You do not have to be defined by this disease.

You CAN go to the work party and advocate for your needs, so that next time its a birthday party, someone can accommodate you. And they might forget, and you might miss out, but life isn't defined by break room cake! You CAN express to your in-laws your needs at thanksgiving. Maybe they won't listen, and I will never suggest someone consumes something that might make them ill, but maybe they will listen! If not, you CAN still enjoy gatherings with your own food! Is it more work? Yes. Is that unfortunate? Yes! But, you do not have to let it define your experience!

Your family and good friends should hopefully love you enough to accommodate you. Your employer and school must (in the USA at least).

Somehow I was able to get through kindergarten, and grade school, and high school, and college, and my job by advocating for my needs, making things work, and finding what I enjoy eating. You can too. And this was all before gluten free products were available easily in stores. There was no FeelGood Foods brand or anything like that! My life has not been miserable. I will admit that it gets much easier over time.

You WILL find things you like to eat. You will find ways to make your favorite recipes gluten free. Your life is not over, in fact, for many of you, you will feel MUCH better on a gluten free diet. I am very thankful to be able to live in a place and a time that understands this condition well enough for me not to starve to death as a child. So much of this sucks, but there is so much to be grateful for.

Rant So barley doesn’t have gluten right?

That’s what my mother in law said after I finished my first helping of homemade soup she brought over. I told her yes it does… why. She replied that she was happy she had pulled out the barley then as she wasn’t sure. That was 14 hours ago… I am so sick and on the bathroom floor. I hope you all have a better day than I am having. Looking forward to resending her all the the things that have gluten and going back to not eating anything she makes

Almost all chips are GF except Pringles. They use wheat and milk too! The Crisp brand is not even close to what I remember these tasting like…man the pizza 🍕 flavor, god I miss you in my mouth and tummy.

How is Pringles not in GF game yet. Get your shit together bro, you’re not winning the Celiac war!

Rant stopped eating "gluten free" food and am now so much happier

I got my diagnosis in my tweens so I know what gluten food tastes like. Its been a decade and I still find gluten free food disgusting (just my opinion). It makes me feel so bad about the fact that I for the rest of my life will have to eat food I think tastes and feels bad and also have to pay ALOT of money for it.
So about a year ago I stopped buying glutenfree pasta, bread and other such stuff. Now I only eat things that are naturally traditionally gluten free. Like a bunch of diffrent types of rice, quinoa, potato. I make bread form cultures that it traditionally has never been done with gluten. I eat rice and sweet potato starch noodles with food that is meant to be eaten with that.

I cannot explain how much less I hate my life for the fact that I cannot eat gluten. Because biting into gf pasta I hate myself and am constantly reminded for what I cannot have, but if I bite into a potato I am actually happy because it tastes and feels good. Idk if it makes any sense but I can highly recommenced trying it. Also you will save sooo much money and it is fun to try new food from different cultures where the recipes have never had wheat in them .

Rant Leave me alone!! If you’re not celiac you’re not entitled to the one gluten free option

I need someone to tell me that I’m not over reacting here. I’m about to be on the verge of tears.

Without sharing too many details to keep anonymity (my coworkers frequent Reddit) - our department won a nice little treat. As history goes - and I am VERY grateful for this - the supervisor would order me a gluten free option if possible. If not, I have zero issue.

With the previous supervisor, I’d take my little non-lethal treat to my desk to enjoy.

Now? Nope. Encouraged to share because coworker simply “wants to try it.”

Jesus fuck. If you wanna try it gluten free, you can get it literally any other time in your life. Keep in mind, there’s five fucking large sized pizzas here, bread sticks, cinnamon rolls, the works.

And I have my one sad little 12 inch gluten free pizza alone.

Rant Drink came with an entire cookie in it, bartender refused to remake it 😑

I went out to a trendy new bar with some friends last night. Fun drinks, cool garnishes, etc. I ordered a tiki-style drink with very basic, safe ingredients (rum, pineapple juice, lime, etc). Didn't ask about the drink being GF, as there was nothing listed in that drink (or any) that could contain gluten. Yeah, whatever, I should have, I know... listen, we all get lazy sometimes!

Bartender hands me the drink. There's an entire cookie in it! Nothing about that was listed on the menu. I call him over and inform him that I have celiac disease and I can't drink it. He pulls it out of the drink and tries to hand it back to me. Um, no, not gonna work. When I refused the cookie-less drink, he put up a huge stink, and started telling me about how I couldn't just 'demand a new drink' because I didn't inform him I had an allergy.

Luckily, he wasn't working alone, because he made it very clear that he was not going to remake it for me! The manager noticed, came over, and forced his employee to remake it. I just couldn't believe the attitude. Ugh. 😑 I told the manager he should really re-write the menu to note any garnishes, ingredients, etc. that contain common allergens. Maybe things will change, maybe they won't... this disease messes with the weirdest parts of your life!

Rant Apparently my BF sucksss

Literally just need to vent:

BF of 4 years lost it last week and yelled about how I "ruin" dinners and outings. For the record, I will always go somewhere I cannot eat at and just enjoy the company of friends while drinking whatever and chatting. Even if it's a party at a friend's house I'll usually bring a small snack for myself and be discreet.

I do not say a word about Celiac or food in general or get upset. People know about it and don't comment or do the pity looks. I genuinely like just going for the company. When I brought that up he said it makes other people feel weird because I can't eat like normal people.

I am beyond upset that he is being a dick about something I literally cannot control. Like sorry you think THEY are uncomfortable because of MY diagnosed genetic condition that I don't ever talk about. I hate when its called attention to, just leave me alone!

Thinking this is dump worthy. So irritated he hid this for 4 years like WTF. He's 40+ acting like a teenager

EDIT: holy crap guys thank you for the reinforcements! I just needed to throw this out somewhere people would understand the audacity. Thank you all, these comments made my day so so so much brighter and I'm 99% sure we're OVERRRRR!

Rant How can a HOSPITAL drop the ball like this?!

I have some other medical issues, and had to visit the ER yesterday (I am in America- Yea. I know...) I was very clear to multiple people when I got here and while I have been here. I had been here almost 9 hours before I got the go ahead to be allowed to eat. Apparently the cafeteria had closed by then and I was staying the night. They didn't have anything I could eat. I have never been so amazed that registered nurses don't know what Celiac's is. Or amazed that the Physicians Assistant asked me "Can you door dash something?" or "Well what do you eat at home?". THE HECK DO YOU THINK I EAT AT HOME?! I make meals. I am currently waiting for breakfast. And have only had 3 apple sauce cups to eat in the past 22 hours. I am beyond hungry, angry, sad, and dumbfounded. Being asked by a nurse "Why are you crying?" after being told they have nothing for me to eat "We have sandwiches. We have graham crackers. Can you eat graham crackers?" I woke up starving after sleeping no where near what I usually sleep. I asked for another applesauce cup to hold me over until breakfast. They said they didn't have anymore and would have to send someone to get more, but they are busy. How could a hospital not have something stashed away for people who can't eat gluten for when the cafeteria closes????? I'm stuck here! Feed me!

EDIT:: THE CAFETERIA CAME THROUGH!

SECOND EDIT:: THE CAFETERIA REALLY CAME THROUGH!! ON THE STICKER FOR MY MEAL THERE IS A GIANT BOLD STATEMENT AT THE BOTTOM READING "ALLERGIES: ISOLATION PROTOCOL" All of you have shown me how much this is a problem in so many places. I'm unemployed working on getting disability, and I am so moved by this and y'all's experiences. It's motivating me to try to figure something out!

Rant Dentist...

Went to new dentist, after moving recently... asked if he could make sure the products he was going to use were gluten free as im highly highly symptomatic, he laughed at me said "oh are you on the diet." I clarified no, as it says in my paper work I have celiac and react very badly very easily, he let me know that "celiac isnt real. Its just when people listen to Ai (which I dont use, and have gotten blood test and endoscopy confirming ny diagnosis) and let themselves worry they feel like they have upset tummy and believe they are sick. Safe to say I said I had to leave and got up out of my reclined dental chair and walked out letting the front desk know I would be finding a new dentist. Wtf. I feel like an ass for leaving but God that was frustrating and just overall a lot. Idk

Rant Sometimes gluten intolerant people need to stay out of the conversation

Post image
566 Upvotes

For context: this person in other comments stated they were gluten intolerant not celiac and they're responding to a celiac who's pregnant. (They say they're allergic in this comment but other commenrs they say "i'm just gluten intolerant")

Misinformation is wild but this is just fucked up that they so gleefully tell someone to eat gluten while pregnant.

Rant The negativity in this sub …

I might get downvoted for this but I honestly don’t care it needs to be said .

Celiac sucks we can all agree on that. Newly diagnosed folks (like myself) are usually more pre-cautious and paranoid about the entire process of healing yourself.

Take myself for example my numbers are so high they are literally off the chart. I want to avoid gluten at all costs that includes CC. I have severe neurological issues that I am trying to figure out with a naturopath and a neurologist coming up because it could partially be the celiac it could partially be my iron deficiency anemia it could partially be my existing iatrogenic nervous system injury.

So why is it that folks that are trying to take extra steps to ensure a product isn’t cross contaminated or contains gluten are often not only down voted on this sub or literally laughed at like iv seen in other posts ?

It’s insane to me especially if it’s coming from another celiac individual. People come here for help not to be made to feel like they are being too safe or they are crazy. Come on guys …do better. This should be a more welcoming community we’re already going through enough no ?

Rant Newbie Celiac

Post image
300 Upvotes

I was recently diagnosed with celiac after bloodwork and biopsy. I work for a large healthcare company that has a cafeteria. I met with one of the dietitians who is celiac herself for a tour of what I could have at the cafe. The line servers switch gloves and pull out the dedicated cutting board, etc. So far so good. I felt like a turkey sandwich. They pulled a loaf of Udis out to get my slices. Put it together, sliced, and wrapped. I walked back to my office, opened it up, and groaned. Picked off all the bead and ate it with a knife and fork. It was tasty, but no more bread there for me. My dad became celiac late in life too and loved Udi, but he toasted it. They don’t have a dedicated GF toaster. I could bring my own bread, I guess. Any recs for decent GF bread or rolls that don’t require toasting?

Rant Friend's comment reminded me how the world perceives people with celiac disease

During a conversation with a friend, they mentioned that while using dating apps, they don't usually pursue people who say they are gluten free because "that seems like a lot". I was kind of shocked by my friend first of all saying that and second of all, saying that to me! I've had celiac disease and have been gluten free for years, the entire duration of our friendship.

This was kind of a reminder to me that this is how most people perceive a person with celiac disease. That it is a burden or a problem to deal with, rather than a person dealing with an autoimmune disease totally out of their control.

Having celiac disease has definitely impacted my entire life, including my mental health. I know he meant it as a joke and "it's not that deep". But it is that deep actually! You all know how hard it is to have to turn down food or bring your own food to events. Or feeling like a burden, that's a huge one for me. I feel so bad when people have to do extra to accommodate me, like having to go to a different restaurant so I can safely eat.

I'm just frustrated. Maybe I want him to apologize? Maybe I just wish the world was a little easier on people with celiac disease. I just wish I could be seen as a person first instead of a problem or deal breaker.

I'm so lucky to have an amazing spouse who eats gluten free with me and really speaks up for me in all food situations. I think everyone with celiac disease deserves that.

And honestly I hope my friend doesn't end up with someone who eats gluten free because he wouldn't be what they deserve.

So this was a little rant to process and share. I'm thinking about approaching my friend and sharing some of my thoughts. Any advice or thoughts about that?

EDIT: I appreciate everybody's thoughts and input. It's nice to hear everybody's perspective! For context, I am a woman married to a woman. She is wonderful and so understanding and I wish everyone could have a person like that in their lives. I think it's fair to say that dating or even being friends with someone who has celiac disease comes with unique challenges and experiences. Some people just simply don't have the understanding or patience to cope with that. It's still a little sad and I do often feel like a burden. I wish things were different but I feel a little more peaceful.

Rant Japan is the worst

Japan is the worst place in the world to live or travel as someone with celiac disease. I’m literally starving. You’d have a better chance of finding gluten-free food in the wilderness with nothing but a spear than in Japan.

Rant Recently Diagnosed- is going completely gluten free worth it?

I was recently confirmed celiac and I’m REALLY struggling. For context, I’m asymptomatic and the cherry on top is that I also have ARFID.

With ARFID, eating has always been stressful and a chore to me. And of course, any of the foods that I actually enjoy eating contain gluten.

If I could, I would pay literally any amount of money not to have ARFID/ be a picky eater/ eat like a child and I felt that way before being diagnosed with celiac, but ESPECIALLY now.

Imagine an annoyingly picky chicken tenders and cheese pizza kid being diagnosed with celiac. That’s me.

I am in the bargaining stages of grief with this diagnosis, trying to find anything that says I’ll be okay if I continue to eat gluten.

People smoke a pack a day, drink daily, etc. and still manage to live decently healthy lives. My lab results are always fine, I’m not anemic and my thyroid panel always comes back fine as well. Also, something’s going to take me out of this world anyway. Imagine I do all of this and still end up with cancer or some shit. I’d be pissed!!

I’m on day 5 of being gluten free. I’ve gotten new pots and pans and kitchen utensils, but I forgot to buy a new pizza cutter. I realized that after making a pretty nasty gf frozen pizza. Feeling defeated.

Being asymptomatic, I feel like I have to be EXTRA cautious because I don’t have any way to tell if I’ve been glutened, so I’m having to be insane about it and I’m scared to eat out of the house because of cross contamination and I’m scared to eat in my house because there’s been so much gluten in my kitchen and my husband is still eating gluten.

I’ve already had 600 breakdowns about this. I know I am dramatic, but I can’t think of a worse person to be diagnosed with celiac.

I guess I’m just hoping to get some insight that it gets better and is possible to be strictly gluten free while being picky. I KNOW all of the bad things that can come from not being gf, but feel free to yell that at me if you wish. I’m just so extremely frustrated and exhausted with this war in my mind.

Rant i hate “you can eat gluten in italy”

my grandparents often take trips to italy since they are retired and have lots of money to spare. today, i went over to their house to have dinner and they prepared some pasta (which i assumed was gluten free) and before eating, my grandma started talking about reading that celiacs could eat pasta from italy because there’s no “GMO’s” in them. this genuinely made my heart stop because i never thought she would say something so stupid. i asked her if the pasta she had prepared was gluten free and she said i could eat it, totally evading the question. i started explaining to her, with a sort of raised voice because i care a lot about making sure my family doesn’t think these things, and everyone around told me i was freaking out for no reason, even my parents. i proceeded to ACTUALLY freak out because i can’t believe my family would stand for this kind of idea without trying to get my grandma to understand that that was not true. i just wanted to rant about this because i hate whoever started the idea that we could eat gluten pasta in italy. its terrifying to think that my family, who i’ve continuously trusted with my health, would believe in or condone that kind of idea without even doing any actual research.

Rant Am I the only one who does not care about bakeries?

There has got to be at least 20 dedicated GF bakeries within reasonable driving distance of me, and I seriously couldn’t care less! There’s even a spot with two separate gf speciality dedicated gf cupcake spots right across the street from each other. My wife brought me to both and I didn’t try anything.

Why? Because I don’t need to eat cookies and cupcakes! I don’t need Rice Krispie squares or a pie or a cake. It doesn’t matter that “they’re so good!” Like, i just don’t care!

I want a gf burger place that won’t cost me $30+ for a simple burger and fries on a bun that’s falling apart. I want a gf pub where I can order anything I want, even stuff from the frier! I want Korean BBQ, Indian everything, sushi without concern. I want a gf pizza place, and not even a fancy artisanal pizza place, like a greasy big chain basic as pizza place. I want to take my family to brunch and be able to eat anything at all from the menu!!

Apologies to all of you who apparently just miss Oreos, Mac and cheese, and cheez its. I just don’t need or care about gluten free desserts or snacks. I want to be able to eat like a normal person again!

Sorry all, rant over.

EDIT: there are a lot of people taking the wrong message from this. I’m not judging anyone who enjoys sweets or would kill for a good gf bakery. I just don’t have any dedicated restaurants near me and with work obligations and social obligations, constantly struggle with eating out. I personally never went to bakeries pre-diagnosis and I see no need to start now. That’s a me thing though, and wasn’t meant as judgement on you and what you enjoy and would like to have access to.
