Discussion Letting users remove posts.

Hello everyone,

As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.

Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.

When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)

This will work for posts only, not for comments.

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.

  • Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.

  • We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.

  • That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.

  • Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.

  • Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.

  • Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.

  • Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.

  • Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.

We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

Video - OC We adopted this girl 4 hours ago

Still no name but...she seems comfortable. I figured she'd hide from us for a bit but...nope.

Now my wife is pissed because it was her idea to adopt a cat and...guess who the cat seems to have picked to be their person lol

Want to know the craziest part? She jumped up and got comfy and of course...I immediately needed to pee. So I triiied my best to get up as gentle as possible, and when I came back..she jumped right back up and got comfy again. I have a bit of cat experience. Never seen that before in my life. Lol. Usually once your move even an inch, cuddle time is ooooover

I didn’t even know cats needed nail trims, and I’ve never trimmed her claws before but i thought they looked fine, are they too long? Her paws are fluffy so I cant tell if the claws are sticking out of the paws (like i saw on google on how to check if they’re long) so i’m not sure

Advice Why is my cat suddenly extremely obsessed with us

Thumbnail

21.2k Upvotes

So last night my 5 year old daughter managed to accidently spray perfume on my cat. As cats do, she tried to begin licking herself to clean it off. Since we were concerned about her ingesting the perfume, my wife gave her a bath in the tub. She didnt like the bath, but she didnt freak out and try to scratch her way out of it either.

Ever since the bath and after she dried off, shes been extremely affectionate with us and obsessed with us. She slept right beside my wife all night and anytime we tried to move her from this spot, she would go right back to it (which is unlike her because usually she sleeps at the foot of the bed away from us by her own choosing or sleeps on a blanket on the floor). I woke up this morning and she has followed me to every single room I go into and keeps purring and wanting affection from me, which is again very unlike her.

She's generally a very friendly and sociable cat, but since the bath she has increased her lovey doveyness by 100%. I'm not complaining because I love how sweet shes being, I just find it a little strange. Any reason she'd be doing this? She's the first cat I've had.

Mourning/Loss Lost my Companion Watson 2019 to 2026

Watson passing was so sudden. On this last Sunday he was in incredible distress. He was showing his pain even while he was speaking. Then on Monday (Canadian Thanksgiving) he was getting more and more lethargic. I phoned the Emergency Vet service and they said that he may have an Intestinal Blockage. On the Tuesday I found out that the Vet wouldn't be in our city until the beginning of November (yes ridiculous for a city our size). He died later on Tuesday. He looked like he was just asleep. He had gone outside to his favorite hiding spot to pass.

I felt so helpless. The nearest emergency vet was 9 hours away. There was nothing I could do but sit with him and keep him comfortable. Sometime during the night while I was sleeping.... He passed.

He was my Loud-Mouth always announcing himself every time he entered a room and I am going to miss him so much!!! I am just destroyed!!! Just needed to let the world know about this amazing cat!

Stories Accidental Solution to UTIs and Going Outside the Litter Box

Thumbnail

1.9k Upvotes

Everyone say hello to Sergeant Pepper!! Now before I start, I do want to clarify Sergeant is a 100%, purebred Barn Cat and has the papers to prove it (the papers are straw).

Sergeant has always been the most perfect cat. She greats guests at the door, loves to cuddle, is chatty and just hilarious; has more personality than fur if that's possible. For about the first year of her life, she had no issues using the litter box, nothing behavioral or seemed stressed in any way. Truly living her best furry life.

Fast forward to just past her first birthday, I moved us from my mom's two story condo with a back yard, halfway across the country to a small studio in Seattle; about 500sq ft (this is important later). The second we arrived at our new place, she started peeing outside the litter box and had blood in her urine. I'm not joking, it was within 5min of putting her in the apartment. Of course, I swept her away to the vet the next day assuming it was and UTI from the stress of the move (totally reasonable!), and she would go back to normal once she adjusted!

Narrator: she did not go back to normal. She would have "Flare Ups" about once week a month for years. I tried everything and anything this sub, my vets and God has to offer for advice to help her; feelaway, more litter boxes, cleaning them more often, different litter, ALL OF IT! I was totally torn apart as she was obviously in horrible pain. Multiple vet trips to multiple vets and specialists with absolutely no answers besides pain meds when she is having an episode.

About two years ago, I moved into a larger apartment with my partner (~750sqft). The flare ups continued but did taper off a little after our move. This time we tried different anxiety medications and taking her for walks in the hallways after she expressed interest (maybe she needs more enrichments? Who knows!!). Again, they were less frequent but they were still happening. I felt totally helpless and like a horrible cat mom. I decided this was just Pepper's version of a chronic illness and we would do our best to offer day to day comfort through anxiety and pain meds for as long as she will be with us. It was hard to accept I couldn't make her healthy but I wasn't going to try to rehome her or put her down; it was not even an option to me.

Cue Sergeant and I's third move together; this time to a 1,110sqft townhouse with lots of windows, 3 sets of stairs, and a patio. Our original studio would have fit in the bedroom alone; it felt totally luxurious. There was a lot of carpet so I bought an industrial level of carpet cleaner and pee pads, hoping to preserve the carpeted areas as long as possible, kept up on all her very specific routines and medications. Ya'll. This diva has not had a single flair up since we moved in (9months).

That's right folks, after 5 years of cleaning cat pee off of and out of everything imaginable, vet visits, medications, new toys, new litter and boxes, I even hired a pet psychic to see if they could ask Pep directly what was happening and it turns out she was just mad we were poor 😂😂.

Obviously, I regret none of it but just so on brand for this little princess to take two steps into my first studio and go "Oh this simply will not due". Im sure this won't be helpful to most as people typically can't move into a bigger place because their cat might "need" it, but I hope it gives some other cat parents a giggle!!

TLDR: After 5 years of UTIs and peeing outside the litter box, my cat stopped because we finally found a place big enough to make her happy.

Medical Questions In frustrated. And need advice.

I need opinions. I have a cat he is three years old, he’s been experiencing stress It seems as he has been peeing and pooping all over the place, picking on the other cats (he's been doing this but both of my younger bits pick on the older ones) and just being a nuisance.

We love him dearly, but he has recently been peeing all over our stuff, we are living in a new apartment with carpet and it’s stressing me out BAD. I knew something had to be wrong so of course I took him to the vet and the vet refused to touch him because he has “sweet aggression” moments where he meows intensely and rubs up on people intensely and can get nippy when he is nervous. They said he is aggressive and basically unsafe. He wasn't acting crazy. And honestly, they’ve always kinda treated my cat differently than my others.

He was doing that at the vet despite 100 mg of gabapentin like they told me to give him and still refused to touch him. and despite paying $100 the vet refused to do anything more. He wasn't acting crasy or even aggressive

They claimed that his peeing was due to territorial aggression, said there wasn't anything more they could do and sent me on my way.

I didnt disagree though, in my head I felt like I wasted my time and money, plus it upset my cat even more.

I did what they asked me to, I got more litter boxes, more cat trees, more toys and pheromone diffusers.

It didn't fix anything, it's been a couple months. But today, a couple months after the appointment i find blood or what looks to be blood in his urine. He had a UTI as a kitten and was doing the same thing, I told them that. But still, they literally only looked at him.

What if this was something life-threatening that could’ve been avoided? now my mind is in shambles

Idk. I'm feeling frustrated because One, what if my cat has been experiencing something possibly life-threatening in the vet through their hands up and refused to touch him or run any tests. Two, just for the exam aka them looking at Him costed me $100.

Wwyd??

Advice Advice on getting ready to say bye

I’ve never posted here and i hate that i’m writing this as my first post.

This is my sweet boy, Teddy. He came home to me as a kitten when i was around 13. He is the first pet i had that was mine, as much as a pet could be mine at that age. We grew up together. It’s been ten years and he’s been the best friend a girl could have. he’s even gotten better with age. Each year he’s become sweeter, more cuddly, and smarter. He knows when i’ve slept in too much and comes on the bed to cuddle and ask for pets until im awake enough to get up. He’s the best alarm clock I could ever ask for. He’s been the best friend, especially when i didn’t feel like i had many others.

A few weeks ago i made a vet appointment for him after he started coughing. i’m not sure how long this had been going on before i took notice because in the month before i had been helping my mom prep for surgery then out of town helping my grandma transition to hospice before she passed away. The vet was concerned enough to order an x-ray which showed one definite mass on his lung with another one possible. we were able to get an appointment with the oncologist the following week and they shared the same opinion with the vet that it was likely carcinoma. They did a needle aspirate biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. We got the call a few days ago, confirmed cancer. They also found that he has swelling in either his stomach or small intestine that could be the location of the primary cancer that then spread to his lungs.

I’m so sad. Based on my conversation with the specialist vet the outlook isn’t great. We could try chemo but they aren’t sold on its effectiveness. Surgery wouldn’t be worth it because it already seems to have spread. Most of the options we have are hospice care. I know cats are extremely good at hiding pain but, other than the coughing, which happens maybe twice a week for less than a minute, he’s acting totally normal. It’s hard to grasp how sick he is with such little change in him.

I’m looking for advice in a few things:
- If you’ve experienced anything similar, what can i expect?
- I don’t want him to suffer, and as much as i want him here as long as possible i don’t want him to live in pain. How can i make sure im keeping him comfortable?
- I’m having so much trouble imagining not having him, if anyone has any suggestions on how to cope please let me know.
-i’d love some recommendations on how to make his last months special for him and how to make the most of this time. I want to make as many memories to have once he’s gone as possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read, please give your pets a little extra love for me and teddy 💕

I just appreciate this sweet boy (Mr. Mans) and his bravery with trusting us after months of trying to get near him. Once he received his first pet and chin scratch from us, he was sold. Hes about 14-15 now according to the vet. He’s been indoor for years now enjoying his catio and bed ❤️

She's my first cat. She was a stray with neurological issues, and I adopted her during one of the darkest times of my life, when I desperately needed something to live for.

Five years ago, I got a job in Europe, but I had to wait 4–5 months before she could move with me. The job could wait. Leaving my baby behind was NEVER an option.

Now she's healthy, happy, and absolutely obsessed with my boyfriend. I'm pretty sure she's forgotten that I'M her mommy. 😂

Everyone, meet Cersei. ❤️

Mourning/Loss Tribute to my beloved Luna, who passed away today. 💔

Last month, we found out that our sweet girl, who was only 10 years old, had a large tumor that had already spread to her heart and lungs. Unfortunately, there was nothing the vets could do for her.

She was stable after spending three weeks hospitalized, so we decided to bring her home and continue with palliative care. She responded well for a few weeks, and we were able to enjoy some more precious time with her.

Sadly, yesterday she started having difficulty breathing. She was still showering us with affection, eating, and interacting with us, but seeing her struggle to breathe was unbearable. I couldn't stand the thought of her suffering, and we had no choice but to let her go.

I held her in my arms until her very last breath. I wanted her to feel safe and loved until the very end.

I'm heartbroken. I've been crying so much, and the pain is unbearable. I miss her so much already. 💔

She was the most beautiful cat in the whole world (at least to me, of course)!!! 🥹💕

Would you mind sharing pictures of your kitties? I think it would bring me some comfort. ❤️

Mourning/Loss Goodbye Vincent

I had to put my kitty Vincent down yesterday - he was 17 and having issues with neurological complications due to diabetes. It’s been really hard. He’s the first cat I’ve had since a kitten. He initially was a support kitten for another cat I had who passed. I got him from a rescue that rescues abandoned kittens. He was found at the side of the road with his brothers and sisters and was the only one who made it. He will be in my heart forever - such a good boy.

Stories To the person who loved my cat before

To start I do not want anyone to judge his previous owner as I do not know the full story.

I adopted a 7 year old cat a few months ago. Tonight I am thinking about his life before my home.

To the person who I believe made hard choice due to changing circumstances. He found a new forever home,. He got the home you wanted for him. Me and my husband have no kids and are crazy cat people. He is loved and adored and gets all the attention he wants. Okay you know that is wrong he wants to be held all the time and you know I have to work and eat. But I do work hybrid! But he is well loved and taken care of.

He has settles in nicely , though sometimes he does not know what to think of our other older cat. He is happy, he is loved and he is safe.

Mourning/Loss I’ve been inconsolable for a week with anticipatory grief.

Post image
144 Upvotes

TL;DR my cat was given a really grim prognosis and I feel like I failed him. I’m a human nurse and it’s part of my job to make people feel better, but I can’t do that for my beloved boy. He’s only 9 and I’ve had him since a kitten.

Back in 2025 my wife and I went to Canada for a vacation and before we left, we noticed our boy picked up his sister’s URI and needed to be on antibiotics and steroids.

He hasn’t been well for longer than a few months since.

We took him to a new PCP this winter, because we thought he was developing cat asthma, had been coughing a lot. The pcp put him on antibiotics and steroids.

3 times. And three times he would get better. Then not. And we never got any imaging recs. Took him to the emergency vet, they did X-rays and found out he had a small consolidation in his lower lungs that could be asthma, a mucus plug, or lung cancer. They told our PCP vet to refer us to oncology vets for diagnostics.

Total cost, 25-35,000 dollars. I can’t afford that.

We take him to a new vet who puts him on a really good medicine regiment for his symptoms, being very understanding that we really can’t pursue oncology right now. This vet understandably request frequent visits to check on him. We decided this fall we would do one last ditch effort to help his symptoms and see if we can do anything else; a deep sedation exam without intubation. The doctor calls me to ask for an in person visit to discuss findings.

The mass has grown and spread to his right lower lungs and up into his left. The vet gave us weeks to months.

And last year all we thought this was cat asthma and a persistent URI.

Every time I look at him I start weeping because I can’t help him get better and I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing. I know the big E is coming, but he still has good and bad days. How the hell do I navigate this because my heart feels like it keeps reshatter-ing.

I feel like this grief will never let up.

I found this beautiful and super friendly guy on my way home today, he seems very well taken care of and not like a stray at all, he had no collar either though. i’m worried he is someone’s house cat that managed to escape without his owners realizing. i knocked on a few houses but nobody answered. Is there anything else I can do for this guy or do I just let him find his way back to his house?

Im curious about other people’s opinions, because personally I have never seen another cat that looks more like Garfield than my sweet boy. He came with the name when we got him. He is 15 pounds and does express interest in lasagna. He is probably the most oddly behaved cat I’ve ever had and one of the most unique looking. I’ve never seen another cat quite like him.
