Let me guess, still no user reviews for games?

2.6k

u/maxlaav 11h ago

I'm sure their AI model will add those over time

579

u/JerryMau5 i5-12600K | RTX 5070 | DDR4 32GB 11h ago

Wouldn’t be surprised if it was an AI review as well

143

u/AloneYogurt 11h ago

Honestly it'll probably be built with AI so it'll look wonky as shit and perform worse too. And that's just a store page.

119

u/Lashley93 i5-6600k | RTX 2080 | 16GB RAM 11h ago

It IS built with AI

"Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that’s way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look.

This first release is light on features. Think of it as a speedboat and not a yacht! Though it does have advanced digital commerce technology such as a shopping cart."

45

u/Kniferharm 10h ago

Cutting edge commerce right there, 8 years of development for a top of the range shopping cart feature

10

u/omfgkevin 9h ago edited 4h ago

Just like how unlike every other launcher where the left side has your games and you can right click to do things like uninstall etc, theirs existed SOLELY to quick launch games.

Yep. That's it. The same feature other games have but worse because if you want to uninstall your games you have to go out of your way to -_-.

It's such a minor thing but it really encapsulates all the crap the store is known for. Just an astounding lack of QOL.

No, because they explicitly do not want user reviews.

Tim Sweeney (the CEO of Epic Games, literal defender of AI-generated CP) has gone on record constantly about how upset he is at Steam's consumer-friendliness. He doesn't want consumers to be able to voice their criticisms, he doesn't want consumers to know if a game is made with generative AI, he lets NFT slop run rampant on Epic and then claims Valve is...*checks notes* greedy for banning it over concerns of fraud, accusing them of actually banning it because they don't get their 30% when NFTs are traded, as though his own company didn't buy Rocket League and then kill its trading system so that players had even less ownership of their cosmetics than they started with.

Tim Sweeney is a.) a fucking creep, and b.) the absolute worst kind of person to be allowed success with a storefront.

20

u/Easy_Needleworker604 9h ago

I’ll never forget how Tim Sweeney tweeted all day every day through 2020 acting like the Apple App Store taking 30% was the biggest issue of all time while people were being loaded into mobile morgues and the police were maiming journalists.

Like read the room dude

No user reviews, no offline mode unless you're actually disconnected, can't turn off chat

What we got was a new UI

70

u/000extra 10h ago

They won’t do it bc they don’t want bad reviews on their own games

Easiest reply ever from steam lmao

Speed (vs EGS) • user reviews --> yes vs no

No, but let me guess, they built it by saying “Claude, make me Steam but better.”

57

u/BeerGogglesFTW 11h ago

Probably not a good idea for EGS to have user reviews.

Not anytime soon anyway. People will probably review bomb games just for being on EGS,

17

u/big-oofs-only-0193 11h ago

Especially the EGS exclusives and timed exclusives.

Epic does have user reviews from what I understand. The problem is that the way they’re designed heavily biases towards people who like the game. Basically, they choose who can review a game, and the more hours you play, the more likely you are to get picked to write a review.

94

u/kron123456789 11h ago

Epic has user ratings and user tags. Not actual reviews. And those user tags don't have any negative ones.

Do reviews really matter for a weekly free game launcher though

54

u/Wittusus Bazzite | R7 5800X3D | RX 6800XT Nitro+ | 32GB 11h ago

Free game launcher? No, but Epic is trying really hard for people to use it as an actual game launcher, they are far from having the required functionality for people to even consider. Steam is the obvious best, Gog has less sales and games, but no DRM. Epic? It's just a pile of shit that sometimes gives you freebies, most of which are almost worthless.

7

u/RovDer 11h ago

Completely agree, I think I have close to 300 games in my Epic library and only payed for two.

Your comment shows exactly where Epic is going wrong. Nobody cares about going from 10 to 5 seconds n such, thats literally nothing lol. There are plenty of reasons why steam is better and as long as Epic doesn't have those they won't be better.

That along with Epic as a company being a lot less likeable than steam, people being used to the steam ecosystem and Epic being newer are all reasons why I don't see them ever winning over Valve, unless Valve majorly screws up

Yes definitely the thing that bothers me the most with Steam is that my library takes 0.42s to load. /s

If they think that being a few milliseconds faster will move Steam users to their tools they are delusional lol.

800

u/splendiferous-finch_ Potato XTX3D-k Titan 11h ago

Of course it loads faster, because your epic library is empty with no real playtime data etc. because you have never used it compared to steam which you unfortunately have been using for years probably. It's a genious innovation you see

109

u/Vawned Homonymous 11h ago

I (like many others) grab all the free stuff. I have no idea what I have there cause I cannot see them without installing the launcher, which I refuse to do.

56

u/Master_Chief_00117 10h ago

I gave up on grabbing the free stuff, they rarely give anything good (which makes sense) and even if they do I don’t use them.

8

u/Greedy-Pineapple-914 10h ago

I got RDR2 for free one week and it's been downhill from there

8

u/Stressedhumbucker 9h ago

I gave up on the free games after I tried to log in to claim a title one day and found the website was so broken that I literally could not progress past the captcha. The free games are not worth the stress of trying to log in.

I recommend using the Heroic launcher.

It can integrate with EGS and download your games without ever opening the actual Epic launcher. It can even automatically add the games to your Steam library as a non-Steam game.

I like how it scanned my files for stream and got my friends list without asking or even telling me it was doing this

11

u/Desistance 10h ago

Luckily my friends don't like Epic Games.

279

u/TotallyBrandNewName 11h ago

I so far bought Hell Let loose, Control, Death stranding, Batman trilogy on Steam even if I had them on EGS.

Idk if people say it but imo, Epic Games Store just sounds so bad, like those websites we used to play as a kid...

53

u/Neirchill 9h ago

I won't even install their launcher to get free games

10

u/TotallyBrandNewName 8h ago

I used to but then I started thinking I can hoard all those games but the devs will see their big numbers and no played time and I felt bad for them.

Can I sort my Library

Can I select what page opens first on launch

Does it actually work properly

Is it available for Linux to screw windows if needed?

14

u/Moblam 11h ago

More importantly, will it fucking remember me now? I have to go through the full authentification process every time i start Epic. It doesn't take long, but apparently Epic really cares about being seconds faster now.

Can I hide or remove games from my library!?

I'm still baffled how this still isn't a thing. Got that free game that you didn't like and don't want anymore? Too bad, it's there forever.

Their "solution" is to make a collection with everything but the one game, then when you open Epic click on that collection so you don't have to see it.

It's so incredibly stupid.

The only other games launch I will respect and use is GOG.

GOG Galaxy is unironically pretty sweet! Wish it was slightly more consistent at detecting game installs from Steam and stuff, but I love their launcher overall

I always think competition is a good thing, leading to better prices and healthier competition that benefits the consumer, but honestly, I don't feel that need when it comes to Steam, and even less so when it comes to Epic

58

u/Frooonti 11h ago

I just don't get why they've been burning billions handing out free games for years, paying devs for exclusivity, etc and never touched the freaking launcher that absolutely no one liked. It just doesn't make any sense.

9

u/Mr_Fury 3070 | 3600x | 16 GB DDR5 | 2 TB SSD 11h ago

Steam has good track record yes, but ownership can change hands any second, good people can get too sick to work/die and get replaced by others who are more focused on the bottom line. Two good rules of thumb are: 1: never have loyalty for a company/brand/{insert category of non-human entity of your choosing here} 2: competition is ALWAYS good

17

u/busy_monster 11h ago

I can see the need, however Epic exposed their far more anti-consumer bent when they poached presales and fucked consumers when they launched their store front.

5

u/chalogr 8h ago

Yeah as a game developer I completely disagree. Steam taking 30 percent of a game’s revenue is terrible. And the eshop, Xbox store and psn store are equally terrible. I would love to have an alternative store with a large consumer base where I could sell my game and lose 20 percent or less of my revenue to the store owner rather than a whopping 30 percent. It’s not like they are advertising my game or putting it on the storefront with banners.

The biggest problem with epic is it is a platform favors devs not customers

23

u/r31ya 11h ago

With steam, they have template to follow and they have the war chest to fight

and they decided to do away what makes steam unique (user review and user community page) and simply opt to outspend steam in bonuses.

that went really well...

16

u/GibbonFit 5950X | 9070 XT Red Devil | 64GB DDR4 3600 10h ago

Yep. And the whole exclusivity contracts were them trying to force a user base. Tim was all about the developers, but feels he's simply entitled to the customer base. He doesn't realize the best way to attract customers is by making a store that people want to use and not one they have to use.

4

u/ApiceOfToast mint flavored :3 9h ago

On the "have to use" thing, I have purposefully avoided games because they were exclusive to epic and I know I'm not the only one.

Knowing Tim Sweeney stance on AI development in video games, I bet it will be vibecoded.

29

The first lines of their announcement are “Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that’s way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look.”

Like Jesus Christ. Billion dollar company, constant lay offs, less than optimized engine like 2/3 the industry relies on and they open up with “Programming is hard LOL.” Fuck offffffff.

None of these "Speed Vs Steam" make any difference. Even if it loaded instantaneously, it wouldn't make a difference. It's not Steam, so it will never beat Steam.

The number of things that Steam has over any theoretical "better" Epic Games launcher is so high that even if it was a literal Steam clone, it would still be vastly inferior to Steam.

It's going to take A LOT to get people out of steam.

9

u/Strider5193 11h ago

That's cool and all but I'm still not going to use it.

38

u/Phill721 10h ago

I think comparing themselves to steam is already a bad start. If your only way of attracting users is attacking your competitors instead of offering something new is quite bad

That’s cool epic is still run by epic and steam is still run by valve. Valve has built significantly more community good will than epic so I’ll stick with the company that I know won’t screw me over

Holy shit a whole 5 seconds faster on start up? Damn, time to move my whole collection over to epic. Dude these guys are a joke

37

u/DolanMcRoland 11h ago edited 11h ago

Will games like Fortnite still take 30+ mins for a 450Mb update where 3/4 of that time is spent downloading and writing a handful of packets at a time on a 1Gb/s connection + SSD?

If yes, it's still trash. If no, it's a little less trash.

After years of that joke of a launcher that took ages to open and then launch anything. That for some reason was incapable of keeping your downloads going smoothly. Now they brag about faster boot time. Yeah sure, I'll believe when I see it

6

u/niemertweis 9800x3d rtx5080 11h ago

i dont need faster I need all the features that steam has otherwise no chance

6

u/Former_Debt1106 11h ago

Devs will have to work twice as hard to beat steam's launcher(if theyre serious about it, that is)

6

u/Ho3n3r 11h ago

Steam speed is not an issue. It's the last thing I would consider preferring a different launcher for.

What else you got?

Will it now download from other PCs on my local network, or only from remote servers? Steam does this very well, so only one PC has to take the big hit for the initial download. Epic doesn’t do this. Yes, I know “hacking” this is possible, but that’s just plain stupid.

16

u/AbSuRdE____ 11h ago

Does it have steam input, no? Sorry epic, you already lost before joining the fight.

They promise much, but will always fall woefully short.

They try so hard, yet their failure will be great.

It’s one of the companies I can’t wait to finally be liquidated, let something else take their place.

You know, implementing services that Steam has been doing for a long time is a better way to use their time, yet they waste what little talent they have left doing this.

Speed means nothing if you can’t offer similar services and reach some sort of parity.

The pathetic keeps getting more pathetic.

They still don't have Cloud Saves or Achievement support for far too many games that support both features on Steam, GOG, and Xbox PC. When something like that is the case, it's hard to not look at the launcher as half-assed, regardless of any performance updates they do.

Actually improving their launcher? Good start. Still missing a lot of important social features, but good start.

I'm actually in favor of meaningful competition. Everyone benefits when Epic does something right, and this is a much better use of their money than lawsuits or even more free games that almost nobody will play.

16

u/FuzzyAttitude_ 11h ago

0.36 vs 0.42 seconds 1.2x times faster!!! 🤣 What are they smoking, advertising practically imperceivable difference, Steam takes one extra blink of the human eye to load the library, yep, we should tell them about it 😂

5

u/ztoff27 11h ago

Nice. Biggest problem I’ve had with the launcher has always been the speed. It’s currently so slow to navigate and I have to wait a few seconds when clicking on a game in the store.

5

u/infinitay_ 11h ago

They conveniently left out game updating/install speeds. The problem for me with Epic Games' launcher wasn't load times. It has always been updating/installing. Steam goes without hiccups installing a 100GB game or doing a 30GB update. Epic Games took HOURS to update <15GB on Gigabit internet on an SSD.

I know it’s fun to dunk on Epic and all, but the fact that they finally acknowledge that quality and features are actually important to a storefront’s success is a positive step forward.

They have a long way to go if they hope to actually challenge Steam. But I’ll still welcome the competition if and when they get there.

I love Steam too but I will always welcome competition. I understand reddit has a circlejerk against Epic but I am excited to see if they can pull off a better client

20

u/RpiesSPIES 10h ago

The thing with Epic is they've already shown their hand. There is nothing that can salvage their piss reputation. If they somehow magically pulled ahead of Steam, they'd go ahead and enshittify everything they can the INSTANT they think they can get away with it. They already attempted it because they seemed to think Fortnite and a bunch of free games would be enough. Then they keep trying to take Steam down through shells across Europe. Absolute joke of a company and I'll laugh when they go bankrupt.

4

u/Rakki97 RTX 3060TI, I9-9900K, 32GB 3600MHZ 11h ago

Yay another thing to not look forward to. Yeah it's fast probably because it doesn't contain as many features. It will get slower over time when they add the features people want. Steam is great for their loyal customers, no launcher will ever beat that. The user review system which is brutally honest (as it should) is alone a feature that i will never trade away. Epic did not have this previously.
