I just don't get why they've been burning billions handing out free games for years, paying devs for exclusivity, etc and never touched the freaking launcher that absolutely no one liked. It just doesn't make any sense.

I think they’re done doing exclusivity for now. I don’t think there’s been a new exclusive since Alan wake 2. Unless you want to count gacha games

Gacha games arent a tiny share of the market today. Go look up what type of money those earn if you don't believe me.

They’re big earners but the numbers are suspect due to people running Alts and whales. These games are also on phones. We don’t know the phone/pc revenue split.

Whales are exactly the audience gacha games target. It's not suspect it's expected.

I'm looking into it again and it seems Mihoyo games aren't exclusive to EGS anymore or at least not ZZZ. So forget what I said about EGS having gatch exclusives.

The PC and console playerbase has surpassed the numbers of phone players for most modern gacha games a long time ago. Besides that a lot of them are matching the visuals and gameplay of major modern console releases. Look up "Neverness to everness" if you don't believe me. A lot of people can't even run games like that on their phone even if they wanted to.

I asked this same question years ago. It's baffling that it took them this long to change it at all and it'll STILL not be nearly as good as Steam's. I had a coworker that would argue the point that they didn't need to make it better, though, which was weird

They have improved it, it's just been staggeringly slow progress and it's still miles, MILES behind what Steam offers as a whole.

God bless em regardless! I have a back up library of like 200 games thanks to their silly giveaways.

I've had a reminder to download new games on Friday morning running for literally years and only purchased a single game from Epic...

Because the higher-ups decided that's what they'll be doing.

It just doesn't make any sense. That's just their motto.

Old launcher left side, quick launch ONLY. Want to right click to easily uninstall a game you don't want to play anymore for w/e reason? Nope. Access install locations or ANYTHING other launches let you do? Nope. Just. Launch. Game. Only 1 function very smart.

New launcher, friend list is baked in. Yes, because the first thing I want to do when I look at my library is have a gigantic tab of my friends covering a third of the screen that I can't remove.

Honestly I can’t even say the launcher experience is really what’s kept me away from other platforms, it’s purely how steam has almost every game I’ve wanted to play.

EA’s Origin was one of the shittiest launchers ever but I dealt with it because I played lots of battlefield 4, Sim City and need for speed.

At the end of the day though steam is just way more convenient because 98% of my games are there. I can’t say I’ve ever really put any thought to how long different pages take to load 🤷🏻‍♂️

Handing out free games but not providing ways to organize your library. Brilliant.

He genuinely doesn't understand the market. He thinks gamers are beggars and that he's entitled to Steam's market share without offering a better service.

nobody ever accused epic of having good bussinesses sense. the only profitable thing theyve ever made was fortnite and only after they abandoned the main game to fleece children with macrotransactions int he pvp side mode.

They have arguably the most popular dev stack in history and they can barely break even with it. A storefront thats userbase is second only to steam and they have to litterally bribe people to use it.

people's reaction to the launcher was a huge overreaction

Not really. If you're going to launch a store online the least you could do is have reviews with comments.

Oh and the most basic feature of all which was the shopping cart! They didn't have it at launch, they do low but they sure are reaping their rewards with the ammout of work they invested on their storefront

you can get reviews on games literally anywhere

u/Aligyon 16h ago

Well what's the use of using epic if you have to go off site for player reviews? might as well use the competitive's platform instead.

There's a reason why storefronts have reviews on their products and not somewhere else

to download, install and play games, lol

Is this not what they're doing?
