I recently moved here and have some questions…Why do some of y’all stop way before the line at a stop light? I ain’t talking 1-2 ft I’m talking like 8-10 ft from the line. Is it cuz some people drive like idiots and blow stop lights at high rates of speed and that distance gives you time to avoid accident?

Hello All! We are new to these state and recently moved into a rental property in Germantown. A snake came into the house via a hole in the backyard door. They are working on getting it patched and sealed but this makes me nervous about the kids going to the backyard to play. We also have a water table and other outdoor items that my kids love to play with but I’m nervous about snakes getting in them. Even if they aren’t venomous I really can’t deal with snakes. Are snakes in the backyard common in Memphis or is this just a one time incident we got unlucky with? Also any tips on how to deal with snakes and prevent them from being in and around our yard and house? The wild life company came and checked only the entry points downstairs but I am super nervous about more snakes showing up especially in the night upstairs where the kids and I are sleeping. This close to making everyone sleep in tents LOL. The wild life people said these snakes can’t survive indoors, aren’t dangerous, and won’t bite buttttt still I am nervous. Any and all advise appreciated! Thanks in advance

I need someone to serve some docs for me. The person needs to be experienced in serving civil warrants issued by general sessions here in Memphis. The person I need served Will evade so I need someone who can think outside the box and is willing to attempt service at non-traditional hours. Please give me recommendations below about anyone who goes after someone to serve them like a rabbit dog.

The short version is that they recommend voting no on all three state referendums, yes on 5966 (this is something we've been working on for a while. Please show up for library workers), no on the other two city referendums, and for Justin Pearson, Marquita Bradshaw, Margaret Price, Jesse Huseth, and Jason Morrison. There are no formal recommendations for other races, but every line on the ballot is discussed, so hopefully you can get a good idea of how you want to vote if there are any candidates you're unfamiliar with.

Any suggestions on a place locally that will replace the key of a 2023 Volkswagen Jetta for a fair price? I have the cut key and the fob, the shell broke. Thanks!

Does anybody know about a wreck this morning near the railroad tracks at the entrance of presidents island? It looked like a rock hauling truck was involved? Just wondering if they were ok...there was a lot of car parts and rocks everywhere.

How likely is it I can sell baked goods as a little side hustle here? I love trying new recipes. I’m not sure where to start but I don’t care for it to be something super big. I enjoy the compliments I do get from the things I’ve made but it would be a great/fun idea to sell. Especially with making holiday boxes.

You have roughly 4 hours to show someone Memphis. May need to include lunch. How do you showcase our fair city in that short time period?

My parents are coming to visit me for their anniversary and want to stay in Memphis, specifically at a IHG hotel because they have points there. They refuse to stay in Southaven so I am trying to find the best hotel for them. They want to go to Graceland and Beale St. and try some restaurants.
Any recommendations? I was thinking of sending them to the Holiday Inn close to Beale but it doesn't have the best recent reviews.

My husband just took a job in Memphis and we hope to join him soon. I work from home and need a part time daycare/preschool/parent day out for my 2 year old daughter. We will be temporarily living downtown but hope to go to the state line/Southaven area eventually. TIA!

We built now.me to answer the "what should we do tonight?" question without digging through five different sites.
The Memphis live events website lists things to do, shows, concerts, and events coming up around town. Worth a look if you're planning the weekend.
The app (iPhone / iOS / Android) goes beyond events. Open it wherever you are and it shows what's nearby right now: restaurants, bars, museums, and other things to do.
It's completely free and we are actively working on it, so feedback from people who live here is really valuable. If something's missing or wrong for Memphis, let me know in the comments or by DM.

Update on the campaign finance sites: Who Funds Tennessee now covers more than 20 years of history: every congressional race back to 2000, and every state race back to 2004, when the state started keeping electronic records. You can browse past elections by office or by year.
Politicians get a page for every election they ran in, plus money raised and spent during their final term in office and after, and then a career page summing it all up.
For example, you can track Rep. Steve Cohen's career all the way back to the state senate. In his first Congressional run in 2006, about 70% of his funding came from individual donors. By 2024, the total raised was about the same, but 72% came from PACs. His largest all-time donor, unsurprisingly, was the FedEx corporate PAC: $105,000 over 11 elections.
All-time, the most expensive campaign was Randy Boyd's 2018 run for governor: $24.7M, $19.45M of it his own money, losing in the primary. For the Senate, 2006 (Corker vs Ford) is neck and neck with 2018 (Blackburn vs Bredesen) as the most expensive race.
The Q3 reports (through Sept. 30) are in too:
House District 97 (East Memphis/Cordova) is about as close as it gets for November in Tennessee. John Gillespie and Jesse Huseth both ran unopposed in their primaries and finished less than a hundred votes apart. This quarter Huseth raised $98k to Gillespie's $50k, and they ended September almost even in cash: $89k to $84k. Huseth's money came from 647 individuals and 15 organizations, Gillespie's from 37 individuals and 13 orgs.
Rep. Jerri Green raised $995K for governor this quarter, more than her campaign had raised in all the reports before it combined. Marsha Blackburn raised $2.1M and has $3.1M in the bank.
In House District 96, Rep. Gabby Salinas (D) spent about $64K to Telisa Franklin's $9K, and Franklin won the primary 55%-45%.
Right now I'm mostly in a polish and bug-fixing phase, so if anything looks off, tell me here or via dm or email. The same kind of history for Who Funds Memphis is next, and hopefully out by the end of the year.
