Just posting to get this off my chest since I’m back in the office feeling like the worst dog owner ever. Long story short dark morning, tired stumbling start to a hump day during a long workweek, and I was lazy and left our gate open with my two coffee cups in hand rather than bending to put them both down to close the gate immediately behind me. I can open it holding the coffees but can’t close it as the latch is stubborn. Plan was to put them in my car 15 feet away then go back and shut the gate, which I then immediately forgot to do like an idiot.
Fast forward 30 minutes later and I’m a block from my office and get a call from my partner furious that the dogs are gone and I left the gate open. Knowing your dogs are lost is one of the worst feelings I’ve experienced and I’ve been thru a lot. We live on the corner of a very busy road and it was morning rush hour. Cue visions of the worst happening repeating full speed in my head.
Mix of nausea and panic on a street corner downtown debating what to do as I had a big morning meeting. When my head cleared in a moment I turned around to go home. Work is important but these are our babies and I didn’t care if work got mad I needed to get home to help look for them. Called my coworker to explain, go back on the commuter train home, then get a call from my partner a few stops later. Those few seconds of silence when I first picked up were absolutely gut wrenching since I was assuming the worst that one or both got hit by a car.
Miraculously, someone found them safe nearby and my partner was calling to say he was on his way to get them.
He’s furious at me, I’m furious at myself, and I still want to cry and throw up as I’m sitting at my work desk. Not sure why I’m posting here except I guess to say learn from my stupid mistake and don’t have a second of laziness if you know your huskies are escape artists and will bolt at any given chance. Please go easy on me this is my first time posting and I just feel so awful and stupid for making that mistake. Forever thankful for good samaritans who come across escaped dogs and help get them home.
EDIT: came home to two rambunctious, happy fluffy monsters and my husband organizing our garage. We recently moved and most of our stuff is in the garage. But now I can walk thru there to reach my car parked out front and make sure the automatic door is closed since it will be much more obvious as I back out of the driveway. No more messing with multiple gates and fussy latches. Got new collars with air tags as well and will look further into more robust trackers. Husband and I hugged for a long time and dogs are receiving extra snuggles tonight.
I was having a tough time this morning but am so grateful for the kind messages and support from this community. Huskies are a huge undertaking but gotta love this breed.
