Misc Help Abandonment issues 10 week old puppy

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I got a German shepherd/CSV mix 3 weeks ago and he is now 10 weeks old. I have a puppy pen setup for him in the kitchen. No crate, and I will not get a crate unless it's absolutely the last thing that will work.

He's been really happy in the pen until this morning. Now he just screams like a banshee once I leave the room and he starts it even before I'm out of sight. Before this we had worked up to being alone for up to an hour, and just the dogs (puppy and 5 yo dog) by themselves for 2 hours without issues. I don't know what has happened other than my wife left for work at 6:30 like she does every day and since then the puppy just screams. I can't even go to the toilet without him sitting behind the door screaming.

He's had his naps, food and training + playtime as usual and doesn't seem tired or agitated. We keep the same routines every day. Wife works a day job and I work in the evenings, so the dogs aren't alone more than a couple of hours.

I'm not sure if this is normal or not, I've not had a puppy for 14 years and my old dog (RIP) was really, really easy to train as she didn't mind anything at all.

Puppy Blues Thinking of Rehoming

On Sunday 10/4 I got an adorable 8 almost 9 week old puppy from a rescue. She's a cattle dog mix and I live a pretty active/outdoorsy lifestyle so thought it would be a good fit. Since getting her in just over a week, I have been to the vet 4 times. The day after adopting, she had a tapeworm and fleas so vet check up. 4 days later, she was having a diarrhea, straining, and mucusy/bloody stool, so went to urgent care. Parvo test negative, and $300 later, they figured maybe it was the stress of deworming + change in environment. On Sunday, she developed a kennel cough at 9 almost 10 weeks. Unsure how she got this since we haven't been anywhere but the vet. Took her to emergency vet ($1500 later) sent home with hydrocodone and antibiotics. Tuesday morning she gets worse. Not interested in food, vommited, wet cough, very bad. She stays at the hospital on oxygen, IV, fluids. ($2700). So in just over a week of having her, I have already spent $4500. I very naively thought I could wait on pet insurance, so only got it last week, and don't believe this claim will be accepted since there is a 14 day waiting period on illness. Thankfully, she is back with me now and doing much better. I understand owning a pet is expensive. I just did not forsee $4500 in a week of having her. I have called the rescue to see if they can provide some financial assistance. I have barely slept since getting her, am so behind with work. Have barely eaten, have not exercised, and just feeling so much like I miss my old life. I did the research. I knew it would be hard. But I truly did not expect this. I am doing this on my own with no partner or help, in an apartment. She's had a really tough time taking to the crate, but will at least settle in her pen. She has to be quarantined from other dogs for 2-3 weeks so I can't really leave the apartment or have anyone watch her. I was supposed to go on a trip this weekend and leave her with my parents but now have to cancel since she is sick and can't be around other dogs. I'm just looking at the reality of the situation and not sure if this is for me. I know it's been extenuating circumstances, but I am so beyond tired, emotionally, physically, and mentally and rethinking if this is the right time in my life to keep a puppy. Please any advice or support.

Puppy Blues Puppy blues are hitting me hard. Need some encouraging words.

Okay, so I brought home my 10-week-old Maltese girl last Saturday, and this is the first dog I’ve ever been fully responsible for.

Honestly, she’s a really good puppy. She barely cries or barks. The only thing is, after being awake for a while, she turns into a little devil. She starts scratching, biting, and going absolutely crazy. But if I give her some space and stop engaging with her, she eventually goes to her bed and falls asleep all by herself.

The thing is, I’ve been feeling so overwhelmed by the responsibility of taking care of another living being. It’s been weighing heavily on me, and I’ve cried every day since she arrived.

I had built up this whole idea in my head that we’d cuddle, that she’d be my little companion, and that we’d have this special bond. But she’s not really in a cuddly phase right now. I also thought we’d connect instantly, but instead, it feels like we’re strangers to each other (which, I guess, we technically are, lol).

Right now, taking care of her honestly feels more like a chore than something I enjoy. I’m constantly worrying about her, trying to keep her entertained, and making sure she’s eating and sleeping well. But then, if I engage with her too much, she gets overstimulated and starts acting crazy. I just can’t seem to find the right balance.

I know it’s only been a few days, and I’m probably expecting too much too soon, but it’s hard not to feel discouraged when things aren’t turning out the way I imagined.

I’d really love to hear from people who’ve been through something similar. Does it get better? Did you eventually feel that bond you were hoping for? I could really use some encouraging words right now.

Potty Training Title: Puppy pees perfectly at night but EVERYWHERE during the day 😭

• Upvotes

My 15-week-old Golden Retriever, Reia, pees perfectly in her tray inside her playpen overnight. But during the day, she’ll pee anywhere except the tray! Even if we keep her in the playpen, she’ll hold it and pee on the floor as soon as we let her out. 🥲
The very few times we’ve caught her peeing in the pee tray, we have rewarded her and celebrated her loudly. But it hasn’t seemed to make much of a difference. We’ve also tried a few different locations but none of them seem to help.

She’s not fully vaccinated yet, so outdoor potty training isn’t an option for now.

Has anyone experienced this? How do I get her to use her tray consistently during the day too?

Biting and Teething Need help with puppy biting hard and jumping.

Im not sure the exact age or breed. Probably 3-4 months old. She seems on the smaller side.

I do have two dogs that I got as puppies and I don't remember them behaving like this or this bad. With both of them I made high pitch squeals and they bit softer and I gently pushed their nose down and they just learned not to jump.

They are the most well behaved dogs.

But this new puppy...that doesn't seem to work. Redirecting doesn't work. Times outs dont work. Positive reinforcement hasn't worked.

She has tons of chew toys and treats that I utilize. But it doesn't help.

I really want to give her the loving home but im getting frustrated. So I need advice.

Puppy Blues Overly Excited about EVERYTHING!?

Has anyone had a puppy who gets ridiculously excited over literally EVERYTHING? Did it get better?

I have a 4-month-old cocker spaniel, and I swear absolutely anything can send him into overdrive. Me filling his water bowl, changing my clothes, or literally just changing my seating position at my desk. Family visiting has become so difficult for him and it’s because of his own overstimulation.

Some examples:
He gets so excited greeting people that he pees. I know this is normal in puppies but he does it even when it’s people he sees daily.

He screams when he sees another dog and can’t go meet them. And I do mean SCREAMS.

We can be walking along, him in the perfect heel position like a distinguished gentleman, and suddenly he’s launching himself at the backs of my legs and biting. Sometimes it’s later in the walk, sometimes we’re barely five minutes in. It seemingly comes out of nowhere, I’ve been watching for a trigger and I’ve yet to come to a conclusion.

Trying to give him affection and playing with him turns into a full blown screaming fit of excitement. I play with him daily. Give him affection nearly constantly if I’m in his vicinity. I don’t understand what the triggers are?

He’s smart, I’d say 95% potty trained. He’s learned sit, up, down, leave it, kennel up, lay down and shake. It makes me sad to see him get so overly excited that he has a hard time meeting people or dogs. Or just being part of daily life. With other dogs, he went from rolling over at a greeting to being overbearing and immediately jumping all over them.

The crate has been a saving grace. When he gets so overly excited I am able to tell him “kennel up” (sometimes it takes a few repetitions when he’s SUPER wound up) and he goes. I cover the kennel and let him soothe himself.

I know he’s a puppy. I expect excitement and biting. But it feels like he’s already at a 9/10 before anything even happens, so “stop before he gets overstimulated” is difficult to put into practice when he goes from laying down near my feet just chillin to full blown overstimulated in a matter of seconds.

For people who’ve actually had a puppy like this: what helped? How did you teach them to settle when everyday things are SO exciting? And did their ability to handle excitement improve with age?
I love him, but holy shit. I would like to get dressed without him hanging from my clothes and screaming like he’s being brutally murdered.

Discussion Neuter vs Vasectomy for Heeler pupper

I have a 12 month old red heeler puppy with a sterilization contract from breeder due by 13 months of age. I am really struggling with deciding whether I should neuter or get him a vasectomy. He is my house dog, and he is never outside without supervision, so I'm not worried about him roaming around. I do love taking him on long runs and out backpacking though. I am super worried about bone and joint health from a traditional neuter and I am surprised that vasectomies don't seem to be more popular. I am also worried about him becoming reactive/fearful as he is a little anxious around new dogs. I want to be clear that this is my first dog and I grew up in a no dog household. So I don't have any personal experience/knowledge about how a lack of reproductive hormones affects them over the years. And from the research I have done, it also seems like it's only marginally more work dealing with sexual frustrations from the vasectomy on top of usual training, and an overall healthier dog other increased c4nc3r risk. Granted this "research" was a couple of random vet websites and petmd, and it had very little on the long-term side affects from neutering. I am very curious what you dog owners have done with your perritos and please feel free to get sciencey. Especially those with working breeds living in the city. Also would love to hear about any issues or quirks you've noticed with intact/vasectomy dogs vs neutered, whether its behavioral, health, and/or anything else.

Right now, I am leaning toward getting him a vasectomy for his sterilization contract, with the possibility of neutering him in his later years for prostate issues. Overall, I love him so flipping much. I just want what's best for him. Would love to hear yall's advice.

Edit: I am planning on talking to my vet about it, I am just curious about your experience with dealing with this.

Nutrition Feeding "sensitive skin/stomach" kibbles from the start?

I'm getting a german pinscher puppy in a few weeks, he's a gorgeous black and tan. I'm planning to do the purina pro plan puppy food for him. A lot of people said the "sensitive skin and stomach" kibble, which is a salmon and rice formula, made their black dog's coats absolutely shiny and gorgeous. I'd love for mine to have that healthy, sleek coat too.

My question is, if i start him on the "sensitive" formula from when he is 10 weeks old, is there a chance he will have trouble tolerating other "normal" blends like chicken, turkey, etc. in the future? I'd hate to induce an intolerance just for the coat.

Edit: all the options mentioned above are made specifically for puppies

Misc Help Apartment carpet and potty training

My family and I have had our 1.5 year old Maltese since April of last year. I started potty training him when we first got him, but my family has been with him mostly for the past year. I am taking him to live with me soon, and I am trying to prepare since I live in an apartment with mostly carpeting. My puppy is not fully potty trained and we are starting over when I bring him to live with me, and I am trying to figure out the best setup for him to be in a playpen at home while I am at work. I decided on a taller playpen that he can’t jump over while he’s home alone, but since he is still prone to accidents, I’m not sure what to use to protect the carpets. Would interlocking gym mats work? Or whelping pads? Has anyone had experience with covering up a carpeted area to avoid carpet damage with a potty training puppy?

Misc Help Sensitive puppy needs recommendations for affordable hypoallergenic foods and wear.

We have a 6 month old puppy who we have had him since the end of August I believe. He’s doing really well! Except he seems to be highly sensitive of constitution.
His collar is giving him a rash on the front of his throat where the buckle is and sometimes he also gets a rash in his armpits from his harness. The sizing on both are correct, they have plenty of wiggle room. I’m suspecting he’s dealing with some contact dermatitis and potentially some food sensitivities (he constantly has the absolute rankest farts and craziest poops). We want to het a chicken free food to try (I had a dog years ago that was allergic to chicken and had similar symptoms) and we’d like to find a hypoallergenic collar but he’s still growing and dishing out $40-$70 on a collar or $90-$150 on a harness that he will outgrow in 2 months seems unrealistic. We’ve already taken him to the veterinary clinic on him (he ate a handful of raisins the first week we had him and we had to drop 1k at the emergency vet to deal with that and give him a wellness check) and we will be taking him in again to get his big dog vaccines (he’s got all the puppy ones but he’s about old enough for the rest) and to have them give him another wellness checkup so we don’t need any health advice, we are doing our due diligence. We just don’t want to wait for his next appointment to make some shifts to see if they help before we go to the vet again.

Our puppy seems to be a smaller side mini Aussie/pitbull/bassethound mix with distinctly short hair so I know the collar is a lot closer to his skin than with a hairier dog (I’ve mostly owned huskies, akitas and herding dogs with longer hair before this baby) so he needs something cushy I think, potentially with a brass or stainless steel hardware? As for food, he’s not picky (unfortunately he’ll eat anything) but we would like one without chicken, food coloring or too many funky additives.

Does anyone have a recommendation for affordable
hypoallergenic collars/harnesses and foods to give a shot?

Health Conflicting advice on when to neuter! Help

So much conflicting advice on when to neuter 🥲 my vet said between 6-12month, and I’m thinking I’ll do early December which would land us close to 8 months. I just want to do right by my little guy and I’ve been reading so many conflicting opinions on bone/joint development, waiting can help with fear based or anxious behaviors, etc.

Anyone with another opinion to add to my confusion? Haha

- Currently 6 months old
- Mini Aussie (expected to be 17lbs fully grown)
- Showing lots of crazy adolescent behaviors in the past couple of weeks, barking, chewing, biting, forgot how to loose leash walk, struggling to settle

Behavior How can I discourage wanting to go out every 20-30 minutes?

I have a 17 week old Golden puppy and we've had him since he was 8 weeks.

He's great by all measures; sleeps through the night, not super sharky and very confident and intelligent.

As of recently, I can say he's finally fully potty trained and it's been awesome since we got him bells. The not so awesome part is he seems to want to go out CONSTANTLY. I take him out, he potties and comes back in to play but then 20-30 minutes later, he goes and rings the bells again but when I bring him out, he just dinks around, sniffing, trying to eat bunny poo and grass.

Since day one, when I bring him out, he's always on his leash and I make it as boring as possible. I stand in one spot, dont talk to him unless he picks something up then we go back in.

It's just been the last few days that he has started doing this and it's driving me crazy! I've tried bringing him out and playing with him since I assume he just wants to be outside but he always ends up moving on to eating things he's not supposed to.

I've started ignoring him at first and trying to redirect him and if he goes back to the door, then I bring him out because I don't want to ignore him telling me he needs to go but it's so frustrating to bring him out and stand there while he just does whatever. He only goes potty every 2nd or 3rd time.

Will he grow out of this or is there something that I can do?

Behavior Barking at window advice!

My puppy is now 1 years old. He is a rescue mutt.

We put him through some basic training classes when he was very small, and he enjoyed them and responded well. I am looking for a simple way to train a behavior out of him if anyone has any advice:

The problem is, when he and I are relaxing on the couch together, he will (seemingly) randomly have the hair on the back of his neck stand up and start growling , yipping, or barking out the window. This behavior lasts for up to 3 minutes straight of walking back and forth between our front and back windows. To my boyfriend and I, there is nothing to be seen outside the VAST majority of the time. No sounds, no people, no animals. There is occasionally a dog walking by, but he also is not the type of dog to lunge, bark, or even care about another dog walking by when we are on walks.

This behavior happens several times a night, even after he has been very throughly exercised.

Some skills he excels in: sit, stay, leave it, look, lay down. We are still working to master his recall when there are distractions.

Does anyone have any ideas of commands or routines to teach him to come to me and quiet?

Behavior What do I need to look out for when my dog is play fighting with my puppy?

2 year old 6kg cavapoochon. 18 week old 3.5kg Maltipoo. They play fight a lot and it sounds violent. My older dog will often lay on her back play fighting while he jumps at her. She has pinned him a few times. They get on the grass outside my house and they are fighting in clumps. Nobody has been injured. The pup often goes towards her to play. What are the signs it’s going too far?

Puppy Blues My 3rd Puppy will be my last puppy. A puppy blues story

My wife and I got a female 8 week old whole ass husky almost 4 weeks ago. And it has been almost 4 weeks straight of the puppy blues. Thanks to coccidia diarrhea, a tweaked back, and for some reason - not remembering how brutal having a puppy actually is.

We said goodbye to our 12 year old husky golden retriever mix - who we got as an 8 week old puppy when we were 21 years old - about a year and a half ago, and had kept our 6 year old second dog (malamute x German shepherd x Pomeranian) - who we also got as an 8 week old puppy - as a solo dog for that time.

For some godforsaken reason, we decided that we were ready to get her a friend - and we went and got ourselves a gorgeous husky. She immediately had severe diarrhea, which was shortly diagnosed as coccidia. So right off the bat, crate, potty, and sleep training was all incredibly disrupted because she couldn’t go a straight 2 hours without robust diarrhea. The first week, my angel of a wife “slept” on a dog bed in our kitchen with her, trying to give her what she needed around the clock. Zero sleep, but kept the new puppy safe. Prior to securing the husky, we had a deposit down on a separate husky puppy - who wound up dying before we had the chance to meet her - just to give an idea of how brutal this whole experience has been!

As the vet meds for coccidia got better, our other dog and the puppy finally started bonding! It was so incredible to see, as the puppies sister had never been much of a social dog, and definitely never really played with other dogs - much less puppies. But they constantly wanted to play with each other! It truly felt like our antisocial dog was going to be our savior - to help socialize the puppy, and help teach her the ropes!

But then she started getting really bad diarrhea! A very large bummer! Even though it seemed like coccidia didn’t affect adult dogs - her diarrhea was severe, so we scheduled a vet appt for her! Well Io and behold - as we’re getting her ready for this appointment, she jumps off our bed, yelps, and woah! She can hardly walk! We were terrified she tore her doggy ACL which our first dog went through in the last few years of his life. So in addition to the puppy blues, we’re now driving our other dog to the vet, freaking out that we may need to go through the ACL surgery for her too - along with the physical therapy and separation from the puppy. We couldn’t imagine how things could get much harder.

Long story short, the vet thought our other dog hurt her back and was reacting from the new puppy stress too. She constantly jumps off our deck and bed, and with all the playing with the puppy and mental health walks we’ve still been going with her on - we flat out overdid it with our other dog. She’s doing much better now, but in addition to the puppy flipping our home routine upside down, we now have to keep them separated to allow her to rest!

We went through this puppy phase 2 separate times, and the amnesia is SO FOR REAL. I constantly try to remember if it felt this hard with our other pups - and while I remember it being hard, I don’t remember it being like this. Our husky puppy is going to be a great dog, but we have an injured girl who’s just trying to help, and a spunky piranha who we honestly can’t wait for this phase to be over with.

I know it’s only a matter of time, but I just wanted to get this off my chest. I swear being 35 with a puppy is a COMPLETELY different story than being in your 20’s. I have never felt more my age - this puppy has been so humbling.

Behavior Looking for advice about my 8-month-old dog who has suddenly started barking for no apparent reason at night.

Hi everyone! I could really use some advice about my dog.

I have an 8-month-old female Chihuahua. Recently, she has started waking up in the middle of the night and suddenly barking very loudly, seemingly for no apparent reason. There are no obvious noises outside the door or in the hallway.

We live in Thailand, so I’m aware that there can be geckos, lizards, and other small animals around. However, my dog has absolutely no aggressive reaction to the tiny lizards she encounters here. They’re less than a centimeter long, and when she sees one, she simply sniffs around, wags her tail, and shows curiosity. She doesn’t bark at them, act aggressively, or seem frightened of them. That’s why I don’t think the lizards explain what’s been happening.

Let me explain when this behavior started.

Until recently, she was an extremely quiet dog. She hardly ever barked unless I specifically asked her to.

One day, we were on the balcony with our cat and our dog when we suddenly heard cats outside screaming and fighting. Our cat got scared, and our dog immediately started barking loudly, almost as if she were trying to protect us.

After that incident, her behavior changed dramatically. That night, it was practically impossible to sleep. Whenever someone left the room, she would start barking. She reacted particularly strongly whenever our cat left the room. She would bark, run toward the front door, race around the apartment, and refuse to stop.

Something similar happened again today. She suddenly started barking and couldn’t calm down for a long time. I’ve already tried giving her treats containing melatonin, but they haven’t helped.
At one point, she went into another room farther away from the entrance and fell asleep peacefully. She was sleeping normally when, all of a sudden, she woke up and started barking again for no apparent reason. She ran straight toward the front door and started running around the apartment.

We eventually managed to calm her down.

About 10 minutes later, something similar happened again. We started going into separate rooms, and she noticed us moving around. She walked out of the room looking sleepy and seemed completely fine. Then, suddenly, she turned toward the dark area near the front door and started barking loudly and continuously again.

The most confusing part is that there doesn’t seem to be any obvious trigger. I understand that living in Thailand means there might occasionally be small animals around, but my dog reacts to the tiny lizards here with curiosity rather than fear or aggression. She sniffs them and wags her tail without barking. Her current behavior is completely different.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with their dog? Could this be a fear response triggered by the incident with the fighting cats, or could something else be going on?

What would you recommend we do? Should we take her to a vet or consult a canine behaviorist? Are there any safe ways to help her relax and sleep through the night?

We’re really struggling because we’re constantly being woken up and are no longer getting enough sleep, especially with work the next day. We genuinely want to understand what’s happening and find a solution.

I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thank you!

Training Assistance Walking advice for puppy

So our puppy is fully vaccinated now and we have been taking him on walks for a week. I didn't expect them to go perfectly but I hoped they would be a little tiny calmer now.

He pulls like crazy, tries to run away, the works. One thing that baffles me, as I've not had it with any of my previous dogs, is that he whines at us. He just randomly starts crying and whining and tries to jump at us and then immediately runs off and keeps repeating this. Any reason why he'd do it because I can't work it out.

The walks are super simple and they're about 15-20 minutes, they're only longer because of his behaviour rather than continuous walking.

I'd appreciate any advice on this. How to work on the pulling and just charging at everything he sees, and why does he whine?

For reference he is a 4.5 month old Cockapoo.

Adolescence 8 month old puppy, potty trained but chewer: how/when to transition to independence?

Hello puppy101 community! We have an 8 month old puppy who has mercifully been very easy to potty train. However, he still chews things/gets into trouble when we're not watching him so we do crate him for a significant portion of the day while we're working, even though I work from home. I'm starting to think he'd be better behaved if he had more time out of his crate, but don't know how to transition him to independence while keeping him from destructive chewing.

Details on the chewing behavior: When he's out of his crate he is actively supervised. Under our supervision, until we redirect or physically remove him he'll chew on the corner of the rugs (we have hardwood in our main floor where he spends most of his time, with a couple area rugs and mats that he likes to chew on), on the bottom of our dining room chairs (they have like a sticker/some paper on the bottom that he enjoys ripping off), and occasionally on a couple spots of the walls. He has a grass pad outside that he will also tear up if left unsupervised.

The chewing hasn't really improved since we got him at 5 months. He isn't biting us unless he's really in a mood which rarely happens these days.

Details on our schedule:

6-7 wake up, walk, potty, breakfast

7-12 crate in separate room, sleeping when we check the dog cam

12-2 walk, potty, lunch, play

2-5:30 crate in separate room, usually restless by the time we take him out

5:30-6:30 walk, potty, dinner, play

6:30-7:30 nap while we eat dinner

7:30-10 play/chill

When he's out of his crate he usually has a big burst of energy the first hour and a half and then will settle. This is part of why I'm curious if he'd settle better if he had more space to himself/wasn't crated. I also don't know if this is too much time to crate him for generally at this age?

When we first got him we tried a metal exercise pen on the main floor, but a) he got confused because we have the same type of pen around his potty area and he thought he should pee/poop there; haven't had an accident since we moved it knocked on wood, and b) he started throwing himself against the walls trying to escape so it wasn't a very safe or effective way of containing him.

Doggy day care could also be an option, though that feels a little silly long term since I do work from home and would like him to be around me if I didn't have to interrupt meetings to keep him from rehearsing bad chewing behaviors...

Any advice/tips appreciated, thanks in advance for your thoughts!

p.s. also posted in r/dachshund and r/OpenDogTraining just in case you think you're seeing double! Couldn't figure out the repost UI lol so posted here directly as well.

Behavior Puppy afraid of stairs and main room

Hi all! I posted about my puppy having issues with stairs before and she conquered that fear!... for a few months :(

We have an 11 month old lab mix and about 2 months ago, I noticed that she started becoming very scared of the stairs to our top floor and our main living room. As I mentioned, she had a fear of the stairs for a little while when she was younger but then she would happily go up and down them after some training and adding treads. The main room in the living room she had never went through a fear period with, it used to be her favorite room to play in.

The treads are still there and we haven't made any changes to the main floor (I am considering runners or a rug now to help). The only thing I noticed was I was in my office and heard a scrambling noise right when this started, I'm wondering if she slipped or knocked something over and it scared her (I checked her and she didn't seem to be hurt).

I know teenage dogs go through fear periods but I'm concerned as this has been going on 2 months. With the stairs, she's fine on all other stairs and new stairs. She will sometimes go up them if I put treats on each stair but even that will not convince her at times. Walking down the stairs she's a little slow and cautious but she chooses to go down them by herself and with no coaxing. In the main room, we've made a little progress. She'll enter the room now and will run to certain parts of it but she doesn't feel comfortable with it as a whole. We had a fence in front of our shoe rack that I think scared her because of the noise it makes and I removed that about 3 weeks ago.

Has anyone been through this? How did you get your puppy more confident/through this phase? Is it usual to last this long? Would you recommend actively training or just tossing treats in that room and on the stairs once in awhile to entice her? My office is upstairs so I want her to be comfortable with the stairs so she can sleep in here when she wants to be near me (the few times I've gotten her up the stairs recently, she's been very happy to explore and then usually takes a nap in my office). It's also getting colder here and our main room is our largest room so we want her comfortable in there so we can play with her when the weather is bad (before her fear of it, she loved playing chase/keep away running around the two armchairs we have in there). Any advice or suggestions would be great!

Discussion Can a 3-month-old puppy actually learn a "part-time" rule about being allowed upstairs?

Hey everyone, looking for some clarification and advice on a situation with our new puppy. She is a 3-month-old German Shepherd mix.
My dad, who isn't really a major dog person, suddenly decided he wanted a puppy. He's trying, but he has moments where he yells at her for mistakes that could easily be corrected with a simple, calm "no." He also tries to force her to lay down and sleep, physically holding her even when she clearly wants to get up and walk away.
The biggest issue right now is consistency with house boundaries. He decided to let her come upstairs to sleep in his bedroom last night. Because of that, she naturally assumed she is allowed upstairs during the day, too. But my dad insists that she is *only* allowed upstairs at night when it's bedtime, and completely banned from the second floor during the day.
I looked it up, and from what I understand about dog psychology, puppies can't understand "part-time" rules based on a human schedule. They don't have a concept of time like that, and changing the boundaries just makes them incredibly confused.
I have officially decided to step back from helping him train her because he won't listen to me or my mom. But I just wanted to post here to get some outside clarification. Is it even biologically possible for a young working-breed puppy to differentiate between "bedtime" upstairs and "daytime" upstairs without a physical barrier like a baby gate? Or am I right that this is just going to completely confuse her?

Discussion First Vet Visit - Costs?

Hi! We are planning to take our puppy to the vet for her first exam and second round of shots in the next couple of weeks. She has already been to the vet for round one with her breeder.

What is the costs typically? I don’t want to be blind sided but when I call for a quote the receptionists don’t seem to know.

Thank you!

Puppy Blues New 7 week old rescue has been barking in crate nonstop for 1.5 weeks

My partner wants me to rehome him but I’m trying to give him a chance. None of the YouTube methods are working

I brought my adult catahoula home at 8 weeks and did not have these problems. My partner says that he has another week before he wants him out of the house

I literally have a headache right now and I do not get headaches. I have a snuggle puppy, I’ve bought toys, I give treats and praise etc. Nothing works

What else can I try ?

ETA: there’s no breeder. I’ve had him since he was 6 weeks old. He will be 8 weeks old Friday

Him and his litter mates were dumped at a fire station that my friend works at, at 4am. They were left in a box with their breed & birthdate written on it . I love him and want to give him a chance at a good life. That’s why I’m asking for advice
