SteamOS instead of windows?

I don't plan on switching from windows but people don't like windows because of bloatware and junk. Some people want to switch to linux, but it has other problems. I never thought of it until today, why don't people use SteamOS?? Its got everything you can ask for.

Edit:

I was wrong, I thought linux was its own thing compared to steamOS.

It appears that someone has been able to get Intel's XMX Hardware Extensions working in Linux, which should drastically improve performance of XESS. This is particularly exciting if you, like me, have a handheld running an Intel Arc G3 Extreme chip.

I take no credit for this, for the record. I just found it and thought it seemed like great work from the community on making SteamOS even better for different hardware.

Steam Machine audio not working.

• Upvotes

I prefer to use my SM in desktop mode but when I wake from sleep audio thru HDMI does not work. Bluetooth works. Game mode audio works. When I switch back to desktop from game mode audio works but I'm sure this isn't how it's supposed to be.

The problem started since I last updated the OS to the latest version. Has anyone else had this problem? I've not been able to find a solution and I was wondering if I should revert to an older OS or use a beta version?

I'm not sure what to do but I find myself less and less interested in using the SM.

SteamOS launching all games fullscreen at 4k, but my native is 1440p.

I'm running the SteamOS 3.9.2 Beta and noticed that all of my games launch to full screen at 4k, but my monitors native resolution is 1440p. What's strange is that in those that I can change it in-game to 1440p, the resulting image actually looks blurry.

Open the Steam client's system report shows the following line from Steam about my desktop configuration:
steam[2844]: Desktop state changed: desktop: { pos: 0, 0 size: 6144,3440 } primary: { pos: 1158, 0 size: 3840,2160 }

That line suggests the Steam client believes my monitor is running at 4k, but I don't know where it gets that info from. When I open my display settings in SteamOS, it shows my monitor is running 1440p. When I open the OS drop down to choose a resolution, 4k isn't even an option there.

Is anyone aware of a way I can fix the Steam client's monitor configuration data?

question No other resolutions listed in in-game options

I have my Steam Machine connected to a 4k TV. SteamOS has the resolution set to 4k.

When I go into the video options in Star Wars Galactic Racer the resolution drop down shows ONLY 2160p. There is no way, in-game, to select 1440p or 1080p.

Is there a way to make those (and all other) lower resolutions show up in game? Or a way to change the resolution without having to quit the game and set the resolution in the game properties in Steam?

question Wondering if anyone else has thought about getting a leigon go s z1 extreme and pairing it with a egpu as an alternative to buying a steam machine?

Right now in the UK you can buy a steam leigon go s z1 extreme for £674 from very. You can buy an egpu thunderbolt 4 adapter for £115 from AliExpress and get a 9060XT 16gb from Currys for £399. Similar price to the steam machine expect you're getting 32gb of system ram and 16gb of vram when docked and then of course you also have the option of taking the device on the go with you too. I find it a very intriguing idea. I plan to do this and I will update the community with how it goes and how steamos handles egpu.

help wanted Allow Remote Play to stream only a selected monitor

Thumbnail steamcommunity.com
2 Upvotes

I'm the developer of HoloMapper, a projection mapping application on Steam. Users operate the software from one display while projecting to another. Steam Remote Play currently streams both displays, making remote operation difficult. A monitor selection option in Remote Play would greatly improve support for professional multi-monitor workflows.

For clarification, HoloMapper is a Unity application that uses two displays:

- Display 1: Main editor and controls.

- Display 2: Fullscreen projector output.

The actual problem:

Steam Remote Play initially streams Display 1 correctly. However, as soon as the projector output is activated on Display 2, Remote Play switches to capturing both displays side-by-side in a single stream.

This causes the editor to occupy only half of the Steam Link/Steam Deck screen, with the other half wasted on the projector output.

What we need is the ability to stream Display 1 only, while Display 2 continues operating normally on the host computer.

The newer "Primary Display While Streaming" setting doesn't resolve this behavior. We need an explicit option to select which display Remote Play captures, even when an application uses multiple displays simultaneously.

Recomps fyi

so I decided to finally check out some of these Recomps that are heavily criticized but I have to say the King Kong, saints row 1 360 Recomps are very good. King Kong had one crash during a play through. Haven’t beat saints row but it’s playing 98% like on console but I’ve locked it to 60 fps with very low cpu and gpu usage on both games. Cod 3 requires protontricks or something but it’s supposed to be decent too just not as developed.

Games do not change to "running in the background" when tabbed out

Hello! So I finally got everything set up, trying to switch to linux/steamOS for the first time, I'm running it in desktop mode and this issue is driving me crazy. When I open a game through steam, the game forces itself to be the active window even if I tab out to firefox, or discord etc. Expected behaviour is that when I tab out, games are a "background window" and pause, or get muted, or have lower fps, depending on the game and its settings, but instead the game window remains active and even when I tab out and wiggle my mouse over the game window it keeps moving the camera, and sound keeps playing. Tested this with multiple games, and none of them trigger the background status/focus lost status as I'd expect them to.

The only time I can force a game into becoming a background window is when I switch to Another steam window. Like for example if I tab out and open steam settings, or steam library, or steam store. This will force the game to become a background process and get muted/paused/drop fps as expected.

This is leading me to believe this is some kinda setting that steam or steamOS has, that forces games to remain active for as long as it can keep them there. And it's driving me crazy, because I specifically DON'T want that to happen.

Does anyone know what settings I could change to fix this?

I recall hearing that there was a different Decky from what I use on Steam Deck. Can anybody tell me if there are any additional steps on a steam pc v. deck.

Thanks.

help wanted Steam Not Showing Changed Controller Settings

I started playing Deadlock and tried using my PS5 controller. When I go into the controller settings and change the inputs and commands it does change them in the game but it doesn’t show them as changed in the actual controller settings in Steam. So if I want to make an ability activate when I press both bumper buttons I can’t because I can’t see when I add the command. Does anyone know what’s happening?

Finally Achievement Notifications Plugin (v1.6.2) Multi-Language Achievements, Steam Machine Compatibility, Share card and more

Post image
1 Upvotes

Finally Achievement Plugin is a Decky Loader plugin that replaces the plain Steam achievement popup with 18 popup templates, rarity tiers with their own sounds, an achievement browser and an on-screen tracker. I’ve just released 1.6.2, and I want to introduce what the recent updates added too.

New in 1.6.2: faster, complete popups

  • A tester on a Steam Machine reported popups only appearing after pressing the Steam button, or 1–2 minutes late, and then with just a title.
  • The plugin now reads Steam’s own stats file directly, so an unlock should show up about a second after Steam writes it.
  • Names and descriptions now come from Steam’s local schema first. It has every language and includes secret achievements, so descriptions don’t go missing.
  • Nothing is shown twice if another detection path catches the unlock first.
  • Unlock history: a list of recent unlocks with the game, rarity and time. It starts from the day you install 1.6.0 and keeps the last 500. There are “Show more” and “Clear history” buttons.
  • Share card: select an unlock to make a 1200×630 image with the icon, name, description, rarity, game and date. It’s saved to Pictures/Finally Achievements and previewed in the panel. The plugin doesn’t post anywhere. You open or copy the file yourself.
  • Session summary: when you close a game, one popup such as “3 unlocked, 1 rare”. It only appears if you unlocked something.
  • Almost there alert: a popup such as “Only 2 achievements left”. You set the count from 1 to 5, and it fires once per count. It skips finished games and games with very few achievements.

Languages: English, Turkish, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Simplified Chinese and Polish

Install or update: download from the latest release. In Decky, turn on Developer mode and use “Install plugin from ZIP file” (or install from the URL). Your settings are kept.

GitHub: https://github.com/otisabiburada/finally-achievement-plugin

I CREATED THIS PLUGIN WITH CLAUDE JUST FOR MY PERSONAL USE, BUT WANTED TO SHARE IT, IT IS MADE WITH THE HELP OF AN LLM. PLEASE KNOW THAT BEFORE USING IT. HAVE FUN!

Does steamos report system ram usage wrong on custom builds?

Surely this can't be right I was playing 007 at high settings 1440p on a 9060XT my system has 32gb of system memory and it was reporting only 8.6gb ram usage. On bazzite the same game reported 13gb usage and on my legion go s it reports 10gb system ram usage.

Someone has been able to test SteamOS in a snapdragon tablet or laptop?

Pure SteamOS not Rocknix or Droid Deck, also, no phones, I don't think SteamOS should focus on becoming a phone OS, there are solutions like Droid Deck and Game Native in android and their respective IOS counterparts for that. I also know this is very new and isn't good for day to day use. I only have the curiosity if someone has been able to test it.
