question Wondering if anyone else has thought about getting a leigon go s z1 extreme and pairing it with a egpu as an alternative to buying a steam machine?

Right now in the UK you can buy a steam leigon go s z1 extreme for £674 from very. You can buy an egpu thunderbolt 4 adapter for £115 from AliExpress and get a 9060XT 16gb from Currys for £399. Similar price to the steam machine expect you're getting 32gb of system ram and 16gb of vram when docked and then of course you also have the option of taking the device on the go with you too. I find it a very intriguing idea. I plan to do this and I will update the community with how it goes and how steamos handles egpu.

Egpu's are fun but I have found them to be a bit frustrating in use. Mostly work fine but here is a performance hit and at higher fps it gets even worse.

But surely an egpu housing a 16gb 9060XT is going to get better performance than the Steam Machines GPU no? Also offers you the chance to upgrade down the line. The z1 Extreme is also a really good CPU

Possibly but I'm not sure in actual use. I have used a z1e and z2e with egpu's and they haven't quite performed as reliably or as well as I hoped. Not a bad experience though.
