Following the SteamOS October 13th update, I've made a video showcasing it's main new features. Nice update, I like it!

It appears that someone has been able to get Intel's XMX Hardware Extensions working in Linux, which should drastically improve performance of XESS. This is particularly exciting if you, like me, have a handheld running an Intel Arc G3 Extreme chip.

I take no credit for this, for the record. I just found it and thought it seemed like great work from the community on making SteamOS even better for different hardware.

SteamOS instead of windows?

I don't plan on switching from windows but people don't like windows because of bloatware and junk. Some people want to switch to linux, but it has other problems. I never thought of it until today, why don't people use SteamOS?? Its got everything you can ask for.

Edit:

I was wrong, I thought linux was its own thing compared to steamOS.

support VRR stuttering after SteamOS 3.8.28 on Legion Go 2 and ROG Xbox Ally X — built-in displays affected?

Has anyone else noticed VRR becoming noticeably less smooth after the recent SteamOS update?

I’m experiencing the same issue on two handhelds:

  • Lenovo Legion Go 2
  • ROG Xbox Ally X

Both were working smoothly about a week ago. Since updating, games fluctuating between roughly 50 and 70 FPS show obvious stuttering, where those same fluctuations previously felt smooth with VRR enabled. This also happens around 80–90 FPS.

I initially tested with MAKO frame generation set to 0, then completely removed the MAKO launch command from the game’s Steam properties and relaunched. The problem remains.

Interestingly, VRR still works properly on my Steam Machine connected to a VRR TV. That makes me suspect an issue affecting the handhelds’ built-in displays, rather than VRR being broken everywhere. This is only a hypothesis based on my three devices.

The issue appeared on SteamOS 3.8.28. I’ve also tried the 3.9 beta, without resolving it.

Anyone else experiencing this on a built-in VRR display? Please share your device, SteamOS version, and whether an older version or any workaround restores the previous smoothness.

question SteamOs issues

Has anyone like me had any issues or experienced issues with SteamOS? For example, games not booting or crashing before it even boots up, proton driver issues, etc., because before I installed Windows, I used SteamOS first, and I thought everything would be alright, so I tested the OS by installing and playing L4D2. It booted up, but I couldn't load into any map; it would just crash. Then I changed the proton drivers, and everything was fixed, and then I downloaded Wuthering Waves and played it. It would just crash even though I fixed it by changing the proton drivers. I couldn't play it in gaming mode; I would just go to desktop mode and play it there, and then I went to try and play my game library from Epic Games using Heroic. I played Jedi Survivor; it did launch, but my controller wasn’t responding to the game, but the OS itself recognized a mouse and keyboard connection even though i dont have either connected i may want to come back to SteamOS someday, but for now I'm just going to stick to Windows.

Steam Machine audio not working.

I prefer to use my SM in desktop mode but when I wake from sleep audio thru HDMI does not work. Bluetooth works. Game mode audio works. When I switch back to desktop from game mode audio works but I'm sure this isn't how it's supposed to be.

The problem started since I last updated the OS to the latest version. Has anyone else had this problem? I've not been able to find a solution and I was wondering if I should revert to an older OS or use a beta version?

I'm not sure what to do but I find myself less and less interested in using the SM.

help wanted Running into issues running fsr 4.1 on steam os

Hey all! I’m trying to get fsr4.1 to run on stream os, it’s my first time trying optiscaler or anything like that but I’m not able to get monster hunter wilds to run. Any ideas why?

I’m running the newest experimental proton build, and I just updated steam os.

I downloaded all the fsr4 optiscaler files and placed them in the correct game files, not sure why I’m dealing with this.

Controllers aren't recognized, but only in games

I recently build a mini ITX system and installed SteamOS on it for our living room. I tested it after logging into Steam and installed Half-Life 2, worked great with my Steam Controller. I then didn't use it for a bit, and when I came back to it I decided to install Cyberpunk 2077 because I haven't played it yet. The game got stuck on the RedLauncher, but after putting in a command to bypass that, that game started fine too. However, no controller I've tried works. They all work fine in the OS itself, including using the Steam Controller in desktop mode.

This issue has extended to all games I've tried at this point from retro games and metroidvanias to Doom Eternal. As I understand it, there's a known issue with a version of dev/uinput that could be the cause, but I've tried every command that was recommended and the issue persists. Any assistance with this would be deeply appreciated, as I wanted to get this set up ultimately so that my wife could play on it while I use my SteamDeck for co-op gaming.

I'm a bit of a noob in the Linux space, but otherwise experienced in home IT. If there's something complicated you recommend I try, I'm sure I can handle it. Thanks in advance!

question Wondering if anyone else has thought about getting a leigon go s z1 extreme and pairing it with a egpu as an alternative to buying a steam machine?

Right now in the UK you can buy a steam leigon go s z1 extreme for £674 from very. You can buy an egpu thunderbolt 4 adapter for £115 from AliExpress and get a 9060XT 16gb from Currys for £399. Similar price to the steam machine expect you're getting 32gb of system ram and 16gb of vram when docked and then of course you also have the option of taking the device on the go with you too. I find it a very intriguing idea. I plan to do this and I will update the community with how it goes and how steamos handles egpu.

SteamOS launching all games fullscreen at 4k, but my native is 1440p.

I'm running the SteamOS 3.9.2 Beta and noticed that all of my games launch to full screen at 4k, but my monitors native resolution is 1440p. What's strange is that in those that I can change it in-game to 1440p, the resulting image actually looks blurry.

Open the Steam client's system report shows the following line from Steam about my desktop configuration:
steam[2844]: Desktop state changed: desktop: { pos: 0, 0 size: 6144,3440 } primary: { pos: 1158, 0 size: 3840,2160 }

That line suggests the Steam client believes my monitor is running at 4k, but I don't know where it gets that info from. When I open my display settings in SteamOS, it shows my monitor is running 1440p. When I open the OS drop down to choose a resolution, 4k isn't even an option there.

Is anyone aware of a way I can fix the Steam client's monitor configuration data?

question No other resolutions listed in in-game options

I have my Steam Machine connected to a 4k TV. SteamOS has the resolution set to 4k.

When I go into the video options in Star Wars Galactic Racer the resolution drop down shows ONLY 2160p. There is no way, in-game, to select 1440p or 1080p.

Is there a way to make those (and all other) lower resolutions show up in game? Or a way to change the resolution without having to quit the game and set the resolution in the game properties in Steam?

help wanted Allow Remote Play to stream only a selected monitor

Thumbnail steamcommunity.com
2 Upvotes

I'm the developer of HoloMapper, a projection mapping application on Steam. Users operate the software from one display while projecting to another. Steam Remote Play currently streams both displays, making remote operation difficult. A monitor selection option in Remote Play would greatly improve support for professional multi-monitor workflows.

For clarification, HoloMapper is a Unity application that uses two displays:

- Display 1: Main editor and controls.

- Display 2: Fullscreen projector output.

The actual problem:

Steam Remote Play initially streams Display 1 correctly. However, as soon as the projector output is activated on Display 2, Remote Play switches to capturing both displays side-by-side in a single stream.

This causes the editor to occupy only half of the Steam Link/Steam Deck screen, with the other half wasted on the projector output.

What we need is the ability to stream Display 1 only, while Display 2 continues operating normally on the host computer.

The newer "Primary Display While Streaming" setting doesn't resolve this behavior. We need an explicit option to select which display Remote Play captures, even when an application uses multiple displays simultaneously.

Recomps fyi

so I decided to finally check out some of these Recomps that are heavily criticized but I have to say the King Kong, saints row 1 360 Recomps are very good. King Kong had one crash during a play through. Haven’t beat saints row but it’s playing 98% like on console but I’ve locked it to 60 fps with very low cpu and gpu usage on both games. Cod 3 requires protontricks or something but it’s supposed to be decent too just not as developed.
