title and error message pretty much tell the whole story, if you want to use the new epic store with gamemode you will have to launch games through the store app itself

Hardware Repair Steam Deck (sometimes) charging

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My wife's Steamdeck has been overheating and not charging correctly. At first we thought the charging issue was with her charging cable/plug, but when she used my cable, it also only working sporadically. My Deck charges fine with both her cord and my own.

We took the Deck apart and cleaned up and hair and debris in the port and the main board underneath, and the overheating issue stopped, but the charging didn't improve.

Also, the battery isn't inflated or in any state that would make me think it's compromised. Any ideas?

Edit: The charging cable works fine on my own deck and charges at 45W. It hasn't caused any issues so far.

We also cleaned the port out entirely with the battery disconnected to prevent any damage/short circuiting to the charging port (compressed air + toothpick)

Software Modding VoidDeck theme

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I've been working on **Void Deck**, a Decky Loader plugin that restyles the whole Steam Deck interface in Game Mode. It's inspired by monochrome dot-matrix design: pure black backgrounds (great on the OLED), dot-matrix numbers, and a single white focus ring.

**What it does**

- **A new Home screen**: your last game front and center in big dot-matrix type, with playtime and Deck compatibility. Below it, your recently played games and a grid of *every* installed game, including non-Steam shortcuts (emulators, other stores…). A to play, X for details.

- **The whole UI, restyled**: Library, main menu, Quick Access, top and bottom bars all share the same look. Steam's blue gradients are gone.

- **Dot meters everywhere**: battery and Wi-Fi in the top bar, plus brightness and volume in Quick Access, are shown as rows of dots. The battery turns red below 20%.

- **Controller-first**: everything works with the D-pad, and button hints show A/B/X/Y glyphs that match the style.

- **Nothing breaks how Steam works**: it only changes the look. Each part (global skin, Home screen) can be toggled on its own from the Decky panel.

It's free and open source (GPL-3.0). Download and install instructions are on GitHub:

https://github.com/AlejandroTenorioC/VoidDeck

**Heads up**

- This is v0.1.0, the first public release. Valve updates the Steam UI often, so something may look half-styled after a Steam update. If that happens, toggle that part off and let me know.

- The plugin's own settings panel is currently in Spanish (English is on the list).

I'd love feedback: what screen should I redesign next? Bug reports and screenshots of anything that looks off are very welcome. Thanks for checking it out!

Question UPDATE (not much of one) to trying to reunite a Steam Deck with its owner

A lot of people seemed invested in this saga and I've hit a wall presently. I hope people have some other ideas.

I have:

  • contacted Steam support and got this lame response:

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support and reporting this to us.

Please note that Steam Support cannot connect you with the device’s owner.

We recommend that you report the found Steam Deck to your local law enforcement so it can be handled appropriately and returned to its rightful owner.

We appreciate your honesty and for taking the responsible steps in this situation.

Steam Support Oliver

If anyone has advice on how to break through this wall let me know!

  • Posted in several subreddits, getting a lot of traction!

  • Commented on a guy's post and messaged him directly who I think for several reasons is the owner, no response

  • Added the owner as a friend on Steam, no response

  • Tried to log into the account itself to see the billing information or any other means of contacting the owner. I can see what account the deck is associated with in the settings, but I can't access anything else without being routed to a login screen. I can see the username & friend code only.

I throw it out to Reddit, any other ideas? I got plenty of comments last time saying my mother-in-law should have turned it into Amtrak when she found it months ago - and I agree! But she didn't! So there is nothing I can do to turn back the hands of time and I highly doubt it will get to the right person if I turn it into Amtrak now... at best, they'll just give it to the most recent person who claims to have lost a Steam Deck, at worst it lives in lost & found purgatory or is taken home by an employee.

Original post: This is a long shot but .....

Several months ago my mother-in-law found a steam deck left on an Amtrak train. She had no idea what to do with it or how to even turn it on. She just came to visit and handed it over to me this weekend. I was able to boot it up and see the person's username. If it's yours, please message me with the final digits of the username and what Amtrak line you were on when you lost it, and I'll get it back to you.

Looking For Games Which game franchises feel like they're made for the Deck?

I've seen lots of posts recommending games for the Deck, however most of these are singular games which don't have any direct sequels or follow-ups such as Sleeping Dogs, Mad Max, Prey etc.

I'd like to find games where I can play one entry and look forward to playing multiple sequels of it in the future that follow on from the same story (so not including anthology series like FF)

Previously Enjoyed games:

- Batman Arkham series

- Yakuza series

- Halo Master Chief Collection

- Bioshock trilogy

- Mass Effect Trilogy

- Assassin's Creed series

Preferred Genres: Open to anything

Budget: Anything

Other notes: Would prefer series with 3+ entries which run well (40+FPS) and have a progressing narrative

This is my launch day steam deck. It sat in a shed in a hot duffel bag for a year, I thought I had lost it. When I moved I found it. I played it everyday before that happened and I've had it back for 5 months so far playing it everyday and the health is still 100% I guess I'm lucky huh?

Tech Support Aftermarket Steam Deck restoration help

Thumbnail

I bought this Steam Deck LCD from Facebook Marketplace for 250$ while many are being sold around 400$, case included but no cloth nor original charger. Through some inspection, I'm confident that the inside is untampered because there's no pry mark, but filled with gunk which I had to clean and scrape.

The software runs fine, battery life at 90%, air coming out from the vent exhaust smells like dry and old computers. The biggest elephant in the room is the scratch on the right track pad, I've spent an hour pondering why and how it got there, but it doesn't affect the performance of the track pad or sensor underneath. I've checked the controllers and there's no dead zone nor stick stuff.

What can I do to restore this wonderful piece of tech to it's former glory? I know that I'd have to open it up, clean the dust and gunk, repaste the CPU, anything else I'd need to do? Are there anyway I can deal with the scratch mark on the track pad?

Also, I've benchmarked the battery with Hades and the battery only lasts less than an hour and a half before going low, are there any software tweaks I need to know and do extend the playtime?

Question Big handed gang, how do you hold the deck comfortably?

Thumbnail
gallery
17 Upvotes

I just got a SteamDeck and I'm a big fan. The only thing is that if I'm playing for over half an hour my wrists start to hurt somewhat.

I've seen a lot of posts on reddit about how ergonomic the deck is, also for large hands, but I don't see it at all. I either have my handpalms fully on the deck with my fingers very arched to reach L/R 1 and 2, or my palms are not fully on the deck but wrapped around at the bottom, causing my wrists to be in a very uncomfortable position.

So I'm looking for advice to make it more comfortable. This could be the way you're holding it, an accessory/case or the way you're sitting/laying down with it. Any help is appreciated!

Exhibit A (arched fingers with palm fully on deck) and exhibit B (palms not fully on deck and very uncomfortable wrist position) are attached.

Question Last resort, just hope to be lucky!

Howdy! So my family and I moved (very quickly) from Missouri to Florida last week. Good move, happy to be with family. Just one downside: my SteamDeck was left at the airport on Saturday morning while waiting for our flight from Atlanta, GA airport, to the Orlando, FL airport. I already submitted a request to the Atlanta Airport to check (crossed fingers) but I know the chances are slim. If anyone has flown or has been at the airport in Atlanta from Saturday to now, did you find a 256GB OLED Steam Deck? Last game played on it was Final Fantasy XIII. The shell had scuffs on the sides cause kids are fun and it was knocked out of hands too many times. It was a birthday gift almost 2 years ago from wife.

Thank you to all who read this 🥰

Looking For Games Whats your favorite difficult turn based combat game for the Steam Deck?

Hey guys,

I love playing difficult games. Bonus points if there is some kind of randomness in your builds which can get you strong stuff.

Previously enjoyed games

- Xcom 1 with the DLCs and random stats for soldiers

- The Last Spell

- Into the Breach

Preferred Genres

Turn Based Strategy

Budget

Doesnt matter

Other Notes

Someone suggested battle brothers to me, but I tried it on the deck and the controls feel horrible. So what do you guys enjoy in this category?

Tech Support Brown Outs from Portable USB-C 2TB SSD without extra power.

Thumbnail

I just wanted to be able to install multiple 50gig+ games. But the USB C stick I got dies almost always. Needing even to be connected to another Hardware to come back to life again on the Steamdeck.

Here I thought I ordered the future from Amazon but these small USB Stick SSD's seem to require a stronger USB-C 3.2 power delivery than the deck provides on its own.

I even tried making the SSD dumber and slower by down-converting to USB 3.1, and also even 3.0.

I am now at my lost resort. I may need to always carry a L adapter with Power female and 3.2 USB C female. Testing now to see if this guarantee's It does not Brown out.

In 2028 when ram is as cheap as motherboards. I am definitely buying a 4TB internal SSD, and a 2TB SD card.

I really cure's my scrolling game library paralysis with having just all these AAA instantly boot. Add my as a steam friend if you are also Orthodox about digital game collecting.

PS: I collect 7th Generation games. If it came out on consoles and PC between 2005-2013. I will buy the game for my collection.

Steam friend ID: 10433122, add if you also obsess with collecting. Dudes, once you perfectly optimize games on the Steamdeck and they just boot it is the best Playstation 4.5.

Question How do I play offline?

Honestly I've only had my steam deck LCD for about a year now and I never really take it out of the house. I have been attending a wound clinic for a while now and last appointment I took it with me but it would not let me play anything as it told me to connect to the Wi-Fi.

What do I have to do in order to play offline during the trip? I know about disabling Wi-Fi and that there's an offline mode, do I disable Wi-Fi and enable offline mode, one or the other?

Please help me, I have to get it ready for tomorrow morning and I am going to bed soon.

Software Modding Deck Clip Export: a Decky plugin that exports full Steam game recordings to MP4 and sends them to your phone or PC

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Steam caps clip sharing at under a minute and keeps the full recording as .m4s chunks. This Decky plugin exports the whole thing to MP4, whatever the length, and sends it, along with screenshots, to your phone/PC via LocalSend or Syncthing.

Nothing like this existed, so I built it with Claude. Made it for myself, but uploaded it to GitHub just in case someone else needs it too. Install the zip from Releases via Decky developer mode.

Tech Support Most recent stable update: all my screenshots disappeared but are reloading in one at a time

I have no idea how to describe what’s going on because I’ve never encountered something like this.

I just updated my Steam Deck to the most recent stable update. As soon as I turned it back on, it started loading ALL the screenshots I’ve ever taken.

I haven’t launched a game, turned it off, restarted, etc. because when I go to the media tab, the screenshots ARE missing but are all reloading in, it’s not just some weird UI bug. I’m too afraid of losing my screenshots.

Anyone else with this issue? I’ve got thousands of images and I have no idea how long this will take. Maybe this is my sign to finally back up all those photos onto my PC.

Question Over The Hill-

Has anyone picked up Over The Hill yet?(same devs as Art of Rally) the only thing I can find is reviews from months ago with the demo saying it had stutters. Would like any new info before purchasing, thanks!
