AI Slop @ Makers Markets

So I had a quick look at the vendors for the Bombed Out Church makers market this Sunday and there will be at least one vendor there who has (allegedly) written a book and then used AI to generate the cover.

At an ART MARKET.

An art market that charges vendors, then asks for a 'suggested donation' from every customer at the door.

A place where people make their own food, drinks, art work, furniture, etc.

I'm so mad. I get that not everyone has the same distaste for AI Slop, or cares about the impact on artists/the environment/society etc. but I would rather see another stall selling 3D printed dragons than someone selling anything made with AI

It was the early 2000s, I was 17 (but looked about 10). Armed with our NUS cards, me and 5 college mates headed to Medication night at CREAM.

It was my first big night out, the bouncers didn’t care about checking anyone’s ID, we got in!

It was close to Halloween and loads of people were in costumes. I saw Darth Vader dancing to ABBA in the big 70s/80s pop room, I danced to Stereophonics in the indie room while having a Smirnoff ice.

I bought some light up horns at the little hole in the wall shop and some posh girl (who was from down south and up here for uni) asked to wear them for one song, after we’d danced and talked. She handed them back and gave me a snog for my troubles. I was made up.

We got a kebab while we waited for a taxi at the end of the night.

Still one of my best night out memories when thinking back 25/26 years later. I feel old.

Feeling pretty lonely, wondering where I'm going wrong ?

Hey Everyone,

I've made a couple posts on here looking for friends as I know many others have too !

However, it never really lasts and I find myself alone again. Either they move away, which is understandable and long distance friendships become harder. Or they will only schedule meetups once a month, which feels too formal, but I've always still gone through and done that ... Or other times, the effort just fades away, people get busy and no one has time to do anything all of a sudden. I feel like I become the one who's always messaging, checking in, and there's no effort from others until I stop texting altogether !

Again all of this is understandable because that's just how life is... But for someone like me, I don't know what more to do to make a good genuine friendship that will last !

I'm not from here, my family is back home in a different country, I'm not too close to them anyway, I literally just have my boyfriend and nobody else I can rely on, especially in bad times... I've made a few good friends to go out with for drinks and stuff, but I miss the deep emotional support I sometimes need. I need a network, a community...

I've tried girls on the go, meetups, other groups, meeting people one on one because that's where I shine best rather than a group !

I'm not really age restricted either, I'm 26F and while I do prefer more female friendships, I don't care how old you are, some of my best friendships have much much older people and I don't mean any of this in a weird way.

I love reading, hiking, music, dance, travelling, night outs, arts and crafts, I'm always willing to explore and literally do whatever.

I do wish to have friendships where we can just turn up at each other's houses like in the old times, and just exist in each other's company, you can do your thing, I'll read my book in a corner, talk in between, maybe cook together or have a movie night !

So I guess I'm here, trying again, looking for advice, or if anyone's in a similar situation feel free to message me and let's connect xx

Thanks in advance, and also a big thanks to the good genuine people I have met off here !

Liverpool City Region pursuing £5m pilot for free plug-in solar kits

Some interesting news for households struggling with their energy bills.

On 18 September, Liverpool City Region announced plans for a £5 million pilot to provide free plug-in solar kits to homeowners experiencing fuel poverty.

The plans took another step forward on 25 September, when the Combined Authority authorised submitting a funding proposal to the government.

For anyone unfamiliar with plug-in solar, these are small solar panel systems, only recently made legal in the UK, that could save households around £95–£155 a year on their electricity bills, without the hefty upfront cost of a conventional rooftop installation.

The pilot is aimed at owner-occupiers experiencing fuel poverty, with delivery targeted for July 2027.

Government funding still needs to be approved, so it's not a done deal, but it could be welcome news for households facing high electricity bills.

Anyone in Liverpool had work done through the Warm Homes Local Grant this year?

Just wondering if anyone else in Liverpool has applied for the Warm Homes Local Grant through Liverpool City Council / Next Energy, and how they’re getting on?

I applied through the government website on 29 January this year and have been going through the process ever since.

We’ve had multiple assessments, surveys and discussions about the proposed improvements, including solar panels, battery storage, loft insulation, windows and doors.
As recently as 24 September, we had the final solar technical survey. Everything apparently looked good, and the surveyor told us the next contact would be to arrange installation.
Fast forward three weeks, and after chasing Next Energy, I’ve now been told by the council that this year’s funding has run out, and we’ll have to wait until more funding becomes available or other applicants drop out.

I’m absolutely gutted, particularly with winter approaching and energy prices going up. We’ve spent nearly nine months going through this process, believing we were getting closer to installation.
I’ve submitted a Freedom of Information request to understand how the funding has been allocated, but I’m really interested in hearing other people’s experiences.

If you’ve applied through Liverpool City Council:
When did you apply?
Have you had any work completed, or are you still waiting?
If you’ve had work done, roughly when was it installed?
Have you also been told the funding has run out?
I’m particularly interested in whether anyone who applied after January has already had their work completed.
I’m not suggesting anyone who’s had work done shouldn’t have received it — I’m just trying to understand how the process works and whether other people have experienced the same thing.

How many Scousers can speak Gaeilge / Irish?

I’ve met 3 others who can Speak atleast some Irish (IRL), so how many people on the subreddit can speak Irish / Gaeilge?

Is Scouseannach mé freisin!!

mainly, the reason why I’m asking this for Liverpool is because of the historical Irish influence over the city, and a lot of us are Irish heritage, and other things.

when i googled asking how many people in Liverpool can speak Irish, because it’s not a documented language in the uk, Google just said it can’t answer that.

General Question How do you feel about Chick-fil-A opening in Liverpool when its current chairman campaigns against equal rights?

Former CEO Dan Cathy, the son of Chick-fil-A’s founder Truett Cathy drew ire in 2012 when he told Christian publication The Baptist Press that he believed in the “biblical definition of the family unit,” signalling his opposition to marriage equality.

The Chick-fil-A Foundation donated $1.8 million to three anti-LGBTQ+ organizations in 2017, $1,653,416 going to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which enforces a "sexual purity" policy that bars "homosexual acts."

Cathy was revealed by the Daily Beast in 2021 to be among several Christian billionaires who gave millions to the National Christian Charitable Foundation (NCF), which has spearheaded the blockage of the Equality Act, which would update federal laws to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in employment, housing, education, credit, and jury service.

Source: https://www.advocate.com/news/chick-fil-a-lgbtq-record

Cathy is no longer CEO. Instead, he is now Chairman. His son is now CEO instead. The above quotes are of course related to the US, but this is a family business. Their views and opinions still guide the business now that it's in Liverpool too.

Liverpool's Chick-fil-A brings it to six in the UK. They're pushing to open more. Would you support a Liverpool-based business knowing the above? Especially in Liverpool, the city is (at least for the most part) open and welcoming to minorities. Having a business recently open up that has had a CEO and still has a Chairman that is still actively against those minorities is completely at odds with the city's "all are welcome" nature.

The majority of people walking through into its Liverpool venue won't know about the active campaigning against equal rights. There will be a huge demographic of particularly young people who may be giving money to the same business fighting against them.

In 2019, they tried to open in Reading, but closed a year later due to these reasons. They tried in Scotland, and also closed a year later due to the same reasons. They have since hired a "head of diversity".

How you feel about stepping foot in a Liverpool-based business that is actively trying to make it harder for people to live their life?

Parking charges at L1

Went into town tonight to go the pictures and grabbed some food afterwards. We ate tapas - 3 for £16 and then got stung £18 for parking in the Liverpool One Q Park. It’s like they want to kill off hospitality.

I know there are other places to park but it just felt unreasonable?

Just adopted two kittens. Can you narrow down these vets?

I've got two kittens (15 weeks) coming to live with me on Saturday and i need to get their 2nd vaccinations within two weeks. The rescue centre advised a few vets in the area. Does anyone have a history and can advise which vets to use?

  • Adams Vets
  • Noah’s Ark Vets
  • Parker and Crowther
  • Rutland House Vets
  • The Liverpool Vets
  • Vets4Pets
  • Whitecross Vets
  • University of Liverpool Small Animal Practice

I don't have any experience with cats in my adult life, can anyone advise on the cost? Will this be covered under pet insurance or do I just have to suck it up and pay?

Update: Lots of great advice ITT and I appreciate it all, I've decided to go with my local vet after their name popped up in here a couple times and my friend recommended them too. Thanks for the time and effort everyone and i'll be sure to revisit this thread if this vet doesn't work out. ≽(•⩊ •マ≼

Solo Trip recommendations

Hi, 24M here from Ireland

Going solo to Liverpool for a few days in 2 weeks, just looking for any recommendations on what to do because I have absolutely nothing planned.

I'll probably do some Beatles stuff but I doubt that would take up 3 days, also any food recommendations I would really appreciate it.

And if anyone is up for a pint I would be glad of the company,

Cheers!

3x Free tickets for Gianmarco Soresi 6pm, tonight at the Olympia.

Edit - TICKETS GONE

Starts at 7pm, doors open at 6 :)

I’m unfortunately unable to go to this. Got 3 tickets so can send them to people individually or all at once if needed, as long as they get used.

The seats are in the front at row D, so would feel sly leaving them empty 😂

Let me know below if you can make it!

sorry to be that person

But will Liverpool ever get a marathon again?
I feel like it was totally unnecessary to add a 10k to our half marathon when we already have numerous 10ks

Free Active bystander training from RASA

Post image
48 Upvotes

RASA are running multiple free active bystander training sessions. These sessions look at how to recognise harmful behaviour happening and safe ways to intervene.

If you’ve ever seen something happening that you know isn’t right like racism, homophobia etc and haven’t known what to do, this is a fantastic training to go to.

Note: I am not associated with RASA and can’t answer any details about the course I just saw it and thought it was worth sharing. If you have any questions, reach out to RASA directly.

You can book via eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/o/rasa-merseyside-121730154769

Reliable taxi in Kirkby

Good morning,

I'm travelling to Kirby later this week by train, but I will need to travel via taxi while I'm there.

Can anyone recommend a reliable firm? (not alpha I've had bad service using their services at home).

Ideally I would like to use a company that has a app for bookings, so I can track it.

Thanks
