Match Stats Each Premier League side's expected goals conceded from counterattacks this season, plus shots conceded from them

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7689567/2026/10/15/expected-table-counter-attacks-analysis/

Everton’s struggles are relatively new, having ranked 15th in each of the previous two seasons for xG conceded from fast breaks.

Manager David Moyes’ team are pressing with greater intensity than in seven of the previous eight seasons, averaging 4.2 high turnovers per match (only behind their rate of 4.3 in 2023-24). But their defensive line has typically stayed deeper, drawing a league-low four offsides. That opens up gaps and opponents have feasted when Everton have lost the ball.

Always a pleasant surprise to see a fellow American Toffee in this neck of the woods. Once I just happened to sit by one at a college (American) football game and it was a neat connection. There are dozens of us here across the pond. Dozens!

Discussion Thierno Barry deserves credit for pushing through his injury

I didn’t realise how much Barry’s shoulder problem affected him last season. Personally, I think playing through an injury while trying to adapt to the Premier League must have been really difficult. I’ve been encouraged by what I’ve seen from him recently. I feel like there’s more confidence in his game, and I’d love to see him build on that. For me, if Barry can stay fit and get more consistent in front of goal, he could become a really important player for Everton. I’m willing to give him time because I believe there’s a lot more to come from him.

I couldn't disagree more with this quite frankly bollocks assessment of our midfield on Sunday. Armstrong's worst performance?? He was the best player on the pitch until he went off. We missed out on three points because AMN made two big errors and Barry missed 3 big chances. End of. CB and midfield are our biggest strengths at tge moment. Guess some people will just find fault with everything.

We're one of only three teams left who haven't lost a game this season. KDH firing in the middle again. Barry goal. If we can keep this roll going against Chelsea then Arsenal, we'll be sitting pretty.

Sorry for the fairly delayed post of the prediction thread. 89 predictions overall, lowest so far this season. 64(71.9%) predicted a win, 4 (4.5%) predicted a loss, and 21 (23.6%) correctly picked the draw. Discussion Give Barry a break!

Thumbnail instagram.com
90 Upvotes

Love a lot of this guy’s videos (@walkerworms on Instagram) and this one really hit home for me. Too many of you pricks on this sub give Barry far too much shit for missing big chances.

Do I want him to hit them too? Of course! But he’s a young striker in his second season in the Prem, first as a full time starter. The fact that he’s in the positions needed to capitalize on those chances in the first place is a massive upgrade from where he was last season.

The finishing comes with time, and he’s put up plenty of goals this season in the first place. Hell, he’s literally the top goal scorer in top flight English football this season between the Prem and Carabao cup, tied with Haaland at 6 (yes, I know that 3 against Preston is a lot easier than 3 against PL sides, but still)! Tied for the fourth most goals in the Prem alone.

I really think there’s a great player emerging in Barry, so let’s stop being a bunch of pricks to him, yeah?

Help Parking near the ground

Best place for parking near the ground? Parked by the docks last time, took me about an hour just to get out of the City. Where’s the best place to park before the game, I don’t mind a little walk, as long as I know it’s safe and I won’t be ticketed. Thanks.

Discussion I see way too much negativity.

Was our window underwhelming? 100%

Is our depth at striker and fullback worrying? 100%

Are we playing to the absolute maximum capability we can? Definitely not.

But let me take you back

After a promising 20/21 season where we derailed towards the end, Carlo Ancelotti decided to piss us off for Real Madrid.

Fat Rafa, probably the worst Everton manager OAT, completely derailed the club. Pushed Digne and James (arguably our 2 most technically gifted at the time) out of the squad and eventually sold them. Brought in Rondon, Townsend, Gray and Begovic.

With that horrible window, we went from finishing 10th to 16th. Thankfully Rafa was sacked but the man we brought in, despite playing slightly ‘prettier’ football wasn’t much better in frank lampard. We finished the season conceding 18 more goals and scoring 4 less. So much for Digne being the reason for our defensive problems.

22/23 unfortunately under Lampard wasn’t much better. But it was a window where we did insanely good business. Tarks on a free, Coady on loan, Onana 30m, Garner 9m, Idrissa Gueye 2m and McNeil 15m. These signings have all been crucial to where we are today and are all bargains imo.

We also brought in Maupay but we don’t talk about that.

We also got 60m for Richarlison and later 40m for Gordon. IMO these 2 windows were absolutely crucial to where we are now.

Unfortunately we were even worse this season, Barely scraping survival. Beating out Leicester by 2 points. This was an extreme low point for us, Everton are not a club that should ever be in this position.

Lampard was sacked for Dyche.

In 23/24, despite a point deduction, Dyche steadied the ship, also was an ok window for us as we sold around 70m worth of players, notably Kean, Iwobi and Gray.

We also brought in Beto who, wasn’t great, but did score some important goals for us.

We finished 15th this season but it never really seemed like we were going to go down at any point finishing 14 points above relegation and scoring 15 less goals than 21/22… the ship had been steadied.

Going into 24/25, it was another great window for us. Bringing in more talent. Ndiaye 15m, Tim O 9m, JOB 16m and Alcaraz on loan (to buy).

And selling Onana for profit, totalling 70m in sales again.

By the time January came around, we were 16th and just 1 point of the relegation zone. At this point, our squad was clearly too good to be in this position. It was time to move on from Dyche.

In comes David Moyes, who dragged us up to 13th, completely safe from relegation. 23 points above relegation. Suddenly there was hope.

25/26 was the real turning point, bringing in KDH 25m, Grealish Loan, Dibling 40m, Barry 30m and Rohl on loan. We also got rid of loads of deadwood, players who were past it and players who didn’t want to play for us, notably DCL, Holgate, Maupay and Doucoure (love you).

We finished 13th again, but this time just 4 points of conference league and 5 off Europa. This was probably a blessing in disguise as we didn’t have the squad for it yet.

In 25/26 we played noticeably better football and finally had a 11 full of real premier league talent.

This season, we unfortunately had to sell Ndiaye. But we currently sit 5th and undefeated. This is with a few players out of form as well.

We have genuine desires for Europe and January isn’t too far away where I guarantee we will bolster this squad more.

Things are looking up, if you made it this far just remember the place we were in just a couple seasons ago. Dwight McNeil being our best player, finishing 2 points above relegation, FFP breathing down our necks and any half decent player coming through immediately wanting to leave.

Cheer up lads, bright days ahead.

Could experienced Premier League manager end up at Celtic, where his professional career started?

Celtic will be keeping an eye on David Moyes as a possible successor to Martin O'Neill next season, with his Everton contract expiring in the summer and the club's owners looking to sell up.

Unconventional at times but we have a striker who’s improved by almost every metric. I don’t know about y’all but it feels like for the first time in a while we have a team that’s genuinely likeable and supportive of one another.

Side note - I was gonna just post this in DD but was reminded that photos aren’t easy (possible?) to put in comments.

Team Talk Dibling needs to start...

It feels like every time Tyler is on the ball, something positive is going to happen. Beyond that, while I like Johnson, I feel like he's our best option to spell Barry. Additionally, I feel like bringing Johnson and George off the bench, for Barry and Jack, throws a whole lot of attacking pace against tired legs. Not to mention, Tyler is the second biggest transfer fee we've ever paid. I acknowledge that you can't play players based on fees. But you do need to be mindful of your investments.
