Making Things Right: SNL Has Donated $1,000 To Whores
October 14, 2026
If you’re a comedy fan, then you’ve undoubtedly heard about Shane Gillis’s controversial opening monologue on SNL last weekend, where he compared women who wear revealing clothing at the gym to “whores.” Well, there’s no need to boycott SNL, because they’ve stepped up to do the right thing: SNL has donated $1,000 to whores.
And that, folks, is how you keep your reputation as a comedy institution intact!
A representative for the beloved, long-running sketch comedy show said in a statement, “Shane Gillis’s recent jokes about whores do not represent the values of Saturday Night Live. SNL stands by whores no matter how filthy, run-through, and scabbed up they are. That is why we have decided to donate $1,000 to whores, to be distributed via $1 bills scattered around nasty-ass alleyways and drug dens throughout the city.”

u/Effective-Elk-4964 6h ago
Honestly, it’s bullshit that Shane Gillis starts a problem like this and then Michael Che is the one that has to solve it.

NBC doesn’t give a fuck about the f bomb. There’s someone saying fuck once every season.

Che was one of his openers for the huge show he did at the Eagles stadium. They've been close friends for years.

Nah, they didn't perform together in Philly it was at MSG . Just because they've performed together ("friends is generous") doesn't mean they agree with each other.

Friends don't have to agree with each other. It's okay to be friends with people you disagree with. Hell, it's healthy to be friends with someone you disagree with. How else would you get your views challenged or help someone else challenge theirs?
If you think you can only be friends with someone that agrees with you, that speaks a lot about you.

u/amstrumpet 6h ago
There's a difference between being friends with someone I disagree with over, say, tax policy, and someone who I disagree with over how they treat other human beings.

I knew there were a few, but did a quick search. Happens more often than I expected, along the lines with the frequency you said.
The second most recent was Sabrina Carpenter who sang it uncensored twice last October. I was curious, she was invited back to the show 3 months later, no surprise. Shane’s fuck up in the sketch won’t be an issue.
29
u/Cass_Cat952 popping that beanie back on 9h ago
Sabrina's was because a football game ran very late and delayed the news, which delayed the show. I believe she didnt sing her second song, with the two fucks (that are lyrics in the song), until way later. So the FCC didn't give a fuck either lol

there's a slight difference between Trump hosting in 2015 and Trump 2026. hindsight is obviously 20/20 and it was pretty questionable at the time, but nothing like what it would be like now.
Not a fiber of my being has ever had a positive thought about Trump, but the optics were severely different last time he hosted. Hilary Clinton appeared in a bit around the same time (didn't host).
28
u/Choice-Airline-987 8h ago
Letterman banned Trump in 2011 for promoting the Obama birther conspiracy. He was a piece of shit then as is Lorne for having him host.
8
u/Kooky-Blueberry-5352 7h ago edited 7h ago
'Hindsight is 20/20' lol. We have rarely had such a clear view of exactly who someone would be when in power. Literally millions or billions of people saw this going exactly where it went...
26
u/secretlives 8h ago
Enough of this revisionist history - Trump was not "questionable" in 2015; he was outright racist and xenophobic.
15
u/zachary0816 7h ago
Yeah definitely revisionist. Plenty of his terrible views and ideas were already well known. He even had the whole “build a wall and make Mexico pay for it” schtick in full swing at that point. The man was already quite awful, it just doesn’t seem as bad in hindsight because he kept getting worse.
It also didn’t seem like as big a deal to give him a platform in 2015, because there was a common perception that there was no way such an awful candidate could possibly win….. until he did.

People are conveniently forgetting that the birth certificate shit was just overt racism or that the dude wouldn't rent to non-white people in his buildings. Not really no. We knew he was a rapist, fraud, racist, thief, liar, incompetent and all the other things already. There is literally nothing new we learned about him in the following years, just more of the things we already knew.
The idea that the optics were different is completely nonsense.

Bullshit. It was well into the safe harbor hours on the east coast, and edited for the delayed west coast feed.
Unless advertisers pull, which I doubt they will because it surprisingly was one of the more endearing parts of the show, the f bomb will have little to no impact on SNL or NBC.

No they didn't. She dropped the f-bomb in the first episode of the season, she finished out the season and wasn't asked back. Jenny says she just wasn't a good fit for SNL. Surely she'd say it was because of the f-bomb if it was, it's not like there's any shame to it.

Saturday night (as in when it gets dark on a Saturday) is basically a graveyard in terms of TV ratings. It's why SNL has existed for so long—no one wants to take that slot because it's dead. If you can get people talking about some bullshit that happened on TV on Saturday night, you've done a great job. SNL will definitely have Shane Gillis back.

They didn’t care about that. That’s why SNL instantly had the sketch posted to every social media platform. Shane brought a lot of viewers their way and for every person mad at him there’s someone who loved it. Nothing negative will happen from this episode and he’ll be back a few times I’m sure.

58
u/kernpops868 9h ago
Not just part. The setup to the joke was about how women fear him in the woods. He likened the shorts to bait meant to lure predatory fish. He called his sisters “fat bitches.” The whole set was problematic in addition to just being unfunny.
10
u/ZenMasterOfDisguise 4h ago
He likened the shorts to bait meant to lure predatory fish.
LOL, he said the shorts were the color of artificial lures. Like they were bright pinks and yellows, the same color that lures are to attract fish. You are just making up things in your head to ragebait yourself now

u/bitchesandsake 9h ago
And he said he looked like a lesbian, and he said fixing his hair in a certain way is gay, etc. Also the joke about running across a woman on a trail was so poorly setup and he kept trying to imply the punchline to like, zero reaction. Painful lol.

17
u/RebootDarkwingDuck 8h ago
For the first one, that is incredibly relatable for a lot of guys and he's far from the first one to make that observation.
I go for a walks around the block in the evening and whenever I pass a woman on her own I always try to appear non-threatening as possible because I KNOW how I would feel as a woman walking by myself in the dark.
He bombed telling it but I don't see that as problematic.
Him calling his sisters fat bitches? Ehh. That sounds like siblings fucking with each other, not sexism. Borderline.
11
u/nybbas 7h ago
Then doesn't he end it all with him just absolutely ragging on his fat ass self? Like all this shit seems completely blown up for no fucking reason. The monologue got like a small chuckle out of me, it wasn't great, but this reaction is just fucking stupid.

Sure everyone talks shit about McDonald's and Taco Bell, but that's food needed to live. Having a discourse about how bad your TV show is isn't going to interest people to watch...
Unless he only cares about that sweet, sweet YouTube ad revenue. Which then who's going to watch more videos when it's just phoned in celebrities and bits that get more laughs in front of the camera then from viewers?

I have such a funny relationship with Shane. I think he has some very funny material. I actually really enjoyed his Netflix special, and I think people often don't give him enough credit for how often the controversial stuff he says is putting himself as the butt of the joke. But every once in awhile, he goes and says or does something that just makes me go " oh for fuck's sake this is why people don't give you any slack." And then I have to reevaluate how I feel about him.
8
u/Thefrayedends Too tired to do anything funny 9h ago
I keep eating the downvotes, but I'm not worried about it.
If the litmus test for acceptance of a joke is whether or not they pull off homerun laughter, then there can be no experimentation in comedy ever.
I'm a bit disappointed in the comedians jumping on the hate train, but I can at least understand the ones attempting their own jokes on the subject. The ones that are effort posting the hate are not doing anyone any favors.
And I say this as a universalist leftist, who myself has been marginalized and raised by the foster system, I understand the damage that stigma and cultural attitudes can inflict better than most people.
But if nothing else, it's always interesting to watch the pendulum swings on these topics as different groups dig in, and some self reflect on the discourse, while others dig in and refuse to consider any nuance at all.
4
u/khavii 8h ago
You do not work out material on a live, national TV show period. The litmus of a joke is whether the crowd laughs and you need to know if your joke works before bringing it onto a special or live TV. This is the club circuit, this is how it has always worked and Shane is no different from all other comics. He was not trying out new material on SNL. If he did then he deserves the blowback.
He told a joke using a controversial term, and yes the word whore is a controversial term no matter how much you use it. If he had said he went to the gym for the first time in forever and didn't realize all the guys dress like they want a poke in the back during a pride parade it still would have gone over badly because he didn't land a punchline. Do you know what a joke with no landed punchline is called? A statement. That's why using loaded terms in your set is dangerous and leads to frequent backlash, if you don't land the punchline in a way that wins the crowd over, you didn't tell a joke you insulted a bunch of people. This isn't new. In fact none of it is. Sinead O'Connor ripped up a picture of the Pope, didn't hurt anyone, didn't insult anyone, just ripped up a picture and she was blacklisted and had hosts for the following weeks threatening her. Shane called a bunch of people whores. He meant to tell a joke that I assume would have subverted expectations but that isn't what he actually did.
Live a public life as a celebrity you have to expect this kind of thing to happen. The part that gets me are all the fans who think that saying Shane bombed this one and that may have made people think some of the other things he has said maybe aren't just jokes, that's a completely natural reaction to have, it isn't a personal insult to you. Comedy is very heavily subjective and the wrong audience will NOT think it's funny. Shane has bits he calls out as not working in certain parts of the country. He understands it, all comedians do. He fucked up and people are pissed, not that unusual a thing and not something to be flabbergasted at considering every star on the planet gets the same thing. Pedro Pascal gets shot just for being in things and that's despite people agreeing he is good at what he does. You do it too, I promise. There are people out there you could shit talk for hours that other people think are great, this is absolutely no different.
4
u/RogerGunz2 5h ago
I feel like that was actually a point he made in the routine. "you're either gay or youre hitler" implying that today, in the USA at least, everything and everyone HAS to be black and white, one side or the other, and there's no room for anyone to be a little bit in the middle.
It's amazing how many people in this thread are calling him MAGA or conservative when he's really not. The same way he's not a liberal or hardcore democrat.
I agree the language is rough, but I don't get how we're not okay with him accusing a made up person of dresslign like a whore, but RuPaul calls his subordinates whores all of the time, is arguably a worse human being, and people just laugh at it. Or everyoen fucking loves Vanderpump rules and three seasons of that show is Jax raping women.
I'm not saying people are wrong for being upset with Shane, it's just interesting who we pick and choose can say what and when

yeah comedians do that for a single set to a room of 20 people in some random comedy club to see how it lands, not on SNL as the host. experimenting is known to cause things to explode in your face, why are you disappointed that an experiment to millions of people that exploded is being talked about negatively?
also "women dress like whores now" is not even an experiment. it's idiocy, it's his true feelings leaking out, not the setup to a joke. he was searching for filler for his actual joke about clothing and thats what fell out of his mouth. and it's not even original. how many people have made jokes about gym clothes and gay muscle men at the gym. a lot.

I keep saying this. You can joke about anything as long as it’s funny. There are 1000’s of ways to make fun of women’s gym clothes, “Women are whores” just isn’t a good punch line.
When Che makes these types of jokes he isn’t trying to get the audience to agree with him, him being a creep/shitty person is the punch line.

Che is actually a fascinating comedian when he's not doing his segment. If half the people who like his bits with Colin knew how his actual standup routines were outside of SNL, they'd probably change their tune on him. One of his big ones is his "I'm trying to bring the R-word back" routine.
It's honestly not bad, but obviously would rub a big section of people who are anti-R-word the wrong way.

A small percentage of the online fans look at Shane as the political enemy so of course they will treat him differently compared to Jost/Che
1
u/persistingpoet 9h ago
Good thing it doesn’t matter whether you think it was offensive or not. I know a lot of men who are very pissed off about referring to women exercising as whores who look like artificial bait. We’re having another national reckoning with rape culture and jokes like this can be both unfunny and offensive.
Colin and Che don’t use slurs.
3
u/Soft_Transition_6483 1h ago
Whore is not a slur lmao It’s a curse word and is derogatory but is by no means a slur. Also Che and Michael have literally made Nick Kerr jokes
13
u/milesper 8h ago
Colin and Ches most famous segment is them telling offensive jokes under the framing of “look what Che/colin is making me say”. Many of those jokes use equally/more derogatory language than “whore”, which is not even really a slur
→ More replies (5)11
u/Quasi-Yolo 8h ago
But the point of the segment is “this is something offensive to say”. Unless you’re making the point that his whole monologue is, “I am a creep and I say offensive things” it really isn’t the same. His monologue clearly wasnt a “creep character” since most of it read as sincere observational humor. People keep conflating self depreciation with “offensive character”. Take South Park(which I am not entirely defending just using as an example). For the most part, the most offensive things are said by Cartman because he is the character that is written to be the asshole and is treated as such. And sincere things are normally said by Kyle or Stan. Matt and Trey are writing both characters but who youre supposed to see the joke is on depends on the character. Shane doesn’t play a character, he does observations with some self depreciation. It’s really different
→ More replies (1)6
u/milesper 8h ago
Yes, the difference is they frame the jokes in a way that an upper class moderate lib doesn’t feel bad about laughing at it. But the jokes are fundamentally just as offensive. If we’re going to moral police the content of the joke, then the framing doesn’t really matter.
And I would argue that actually is Shane’s whole shtick as a comedian. His persona is “guy who says off-color stuff but deep down is a liberal”.
That said, I’m not his biggest defender and I think he’s too friendly with actual rightwing figures, which is a much bigger issue than using crude language
4
u/Quasi-Yolo 8h ago
Framing totally matters. All jokes have some truth to them. An offensive joke said with sincerity is asking you to agree with some truthful aspect of the joke itself. An offensive joke said by “offensive character” is asking you to understand that only a piece of shit would think that. I think it’s ok to laugh at how fucked up people can be. I think Shane delivered the “women are dressed like whores” line with as much sincerity as the rest of the monologue which was pretty sincere. And he hangs out with Right wing people, goes to right wing events, takes photos with Donald Trump, makes offensive jokes but really he is secretly a liberal? And his persona is “guy who says off color stuff but is deep down a liberal” or “guy who says off color stuff” but is deep down a liberal? Is the character deep down a liberal or is he deep down a liberal?

He’s asking us to laugh at what an offense oaf would say, but he just also is an offensive oaf.
2
u/Thelmara 7h ago
And I would argue that actually is Shane’s whole shtick as a comedian. His persona is “guy who says off-color stuff but deep down is a liberal”.
"Guy who only pretends to be an asshole, but he's always in character, so in the end, he's just actually an asshole."

I respect that you’re offended, but you’re disingenuously paraphrasing what he said.
He was talking specifically about shorts that are “artificial bait-colored.” Which is a reference to the neon colors used for artificial fishing lures.

Given SG's history and how he was unceremoniously let go right after his hiring and the already muddy, controversial lead-up to this moment, I'd say he was already not at the good grace of SNL audience, and that Che and Colin can def get away with it more than he can.

Exactly. This stuff isn't interpreted in a vacuum. Things like someone's past and the company they keep absolutely shade how people will react, as it should.

I think the sentiment in this sub around Gillis as well as comedy today is the same reason for why the show is struggling to bring in new viewers over the past ~20 years.

Is it struggling? Most of the people I ever see in line for standby are young.

Ratings have been relatively stagnant over 20 years, which is why I used that number. The 18-49 demographic has also been shrinking.

Bro this lame subreddit would HATE George Carlin if he was doing current comedy today.

I don't recall George Carlin being blatantly misogynist and bombing so hard that he basically had to pull the Jeb Bush "Please clap" at the end

I'm a bit late to this discussion, but I have a question:
Doesnt the SNL production staff review the monologue before its broadcast? Isnt there a 'dry run' prior to broadcast in front of a studio audience to gauge how well skits and monologues/jokes are working?

SG generated a lot of online content for the show and for content creators. I don't see how that's a bad thing

u/Tallgirl4u 8h ago
Jerry Seinfeld proudly said at a recent show “it’s a genocide I’m down with it, I’m gonna send money to Israel” and I’ve seen like one or two posts about it but everyone wants Shane’s head on a stick. This timeline is so dumb.

u/Chet2017 4h ago
Shane Gillis is a hack. So is the idiot with the puppets, Jeff Dunham. The fact that both of them are extremely popular with certain audiences shows how dumbed down American culture has become.

Also if we're bringing up the decline of American culture, why bring up the guy who is arguably the last of a once-popular-but-now-nearly-extinct style of entertainment? We might as well call out Carrot Top while we're at it.

Hasn't it been forever and people say this in cycles it seems. SNL is weird because it tries to get quite good intelligent writers and cast sometimes and be more high level, but also wants mainstream appeal and to be safe intellectually and politically all the time. Tries to have it both ways and is largely bland, cringe and has no teeth in a lot of ways because of it.

Personally, name dropping Joe and Theo was the crudest bit, just eye rollingly unnecessary. Like, really seemed shallow as fuck.
7
u/Quasi-Yolo 8h ago
I mean he also claimed lesbians are fat which is straight out of edge lord internet garbage. It’s not like Joe and Theo are that much more crude than he is. There is a reason they are friends.

Pretty sure it's because Rogan is known as the sauna guy? He's almost taking aim at his persona. Same with Theo, who you can really picture saying something like that.
3
u/SlartibartfastMcGee 5h ago
It was also probably a real story, and without the context of being at Rogan’s it sounds kinda weird to bring up.

I don’t think snl really gets hurt either. Is anyone going to stop watching snl cause of one joke? No. Will more people maybe check it out since the show is making a bigger splash than usual? Most likely.

u/MotelSans17 6h ago
I don't believe one second that he's playing this 4D chess
He just seemed to not care. Which still works the way you said, but I don't think he bombed on purpose. The bit was extremely low effort, he seemed like he didn't prepare and just winged it.

u/Unrelenting_Salsa 4h ago
He didn't bomb outside of a very narrow social media bubble. He did the kind of routine he always does and got a ton of laughs that apparently people are just ignoring. "Slightly awkward blue collar guy who doesn't really care if you're offended" is kind of his whole character.

u/MikeAwksbig 10h ago

I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward more to an upcoming show than this Saturday.
Not because I love the host or musical guest, but so people can finally shut the fuck up about Shane Gillis.

Lazy joke but not offensive. The people who are kicking and screaming about this are why people can’t stand SNL and its fanbase anymore.

The gym clothes whore trope has been repeated so many times. The only reason this dude is getting attention is because he's right leaning. We know they think women are whores, why continue to drive engagement for him?

Some of his bread and butter in his comedy specials is about how hot teenage girls are and how hard that is for him because he knows it's wrong. I don't understand how anyone finds him funny.
6
u/holadilito 10h ago
His bread and butter is self-deprecation, impressions, American history, sports, family dynamics, and absurd observational humour. Reducing his entire comedic style to jokes about teenage girls is a pretty bizarre take. Which specials are you watching? What is that teenage bit from?

Definitely a creep. I don’t think the thought occurred to him that the “whore” joke just made him look like the creepy guy at the gym that stares at everyone

Well, it’s caught national attention. So, they do have to be very excited about that. It’s an attention economy. This is why the internet wants you to feel angry all the time.
