Personally, name dropping Joe and Theo was the crudest bit, just eye rollingly unnecessary. Like, really seemed shallow as fuck.

Pretty sure it's because Rogan is known as the sauna guy? He's almost taking aim at his persona. Same with Theo, who you can really picture saying something like that.

It was also probably a real story, and without the context of being at Rogan’s it sounds kinda weird to bring up.

And that you have to mention they’re friends. Otherwise you’re just at a famous dude’s house working out and doing naked sauna, which sounds like the aftermath of a Diddy party more than a humourous anecdote.

I mean he also claimed lesbians are fat which is straight out of edge lord internet garbage. It’s not like Joe and Theo are that much more crude than he is. There is a reason they are friends.

Joe is definitely more crude, but for the sake of being crude. Even his fans call him an absolute hack because that's essentially his only schtick. Couldn't pay me to watch his stand up.

When you name drop someone, you are saying that those people are more impressive than you. Why would you do that as a comedian?

Funny how no one cares that he dropped Soder’s name though.

You only think that because you don’t like either. They’re legit his friends what do you want him to do?

Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever heard stand-up that referenced the names of celebrity friends. Felt weird as shot

It's almost like this was all on purpose for this result.

Probably was. I thought most of it was funny, though. Just a couple of weird spots

Aziz Ansari

Bill Hader had a great bit where he'd do a Lorne impression and casually name drop. "Mick was in town so I had dinner with him and Steve..."

They do it all the time. 😂

Aziz Ansari would have no material if he couldn't name drop his celebrity friends like Kanye and Jay-Z

Wtf do you think he was doing in comedy before meeting those guys?

a failed sketch comedy show on MTV2...

I'd have to watch again, but I felt the cringe from the audience when he did that. Maybe it was just me...

Refreshing that I wasn't the only one, but I guess there's plenty of other complaints about the content of the monologue, so this one probably doesn't merit as much attention.

It is just you

I actually enjoyed most of it, but that part cringed me out. Also the punchline “I look like a lesbian” after his bud light commercial joke made no sense.

I cringed as well, but I was recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis so it could’ve just been the spicy tuna roll

u/twackburn 10h ago

my flaming dragon roll didn’t help me laugh either

Damn I’m sorry for your loss.

John Mulaney has done so a few times for various bits. However to compare their skill sets would be a major disservice to Mulaney.

John Mulaney gets a pass. He emphasizes their names funny

Also it’s more of a story telling then a stand up bit if we are being honest. It was a funny situation, not really a punchline.

Kind of integral to the joke, and it’s a joke from his act. And the joke is integral to the structure of the monologue in its whole

He didn’t walk in and say “I’ll show them!!!”

Also kind of soft to have this reaction. These aren’t far right extremists by any means, they’re people you should be able to have mostly civil disagreements with (which kind of proves his gay/hitler point)

The only truly valid criticism of the monologue is that it wasn’t nearly as funny as it should be
