Good thing it doesn’t matter whether you think it was offensive or not. I know a lot of men who are very pissed off about referring to women exercising as whores who look like artificial bait. We’re having another national reckoning with rape culture and jokes like this can be both unfunny and offensive.

Colin and Che don’t use slurs.

Whore is not a slur lmao It’s a curse word and is derogatory but is by no means a slur. Also Che and Michael have literally made Nick Kerr jokes

Colin and Ches most famous segment is them telling offensive jokes under the framing of “look what Che/colin is making me say”. Many of those jokes use equally/more derogatory language than “whore”, which is not even really a slur

But the point of the segment is “this is something offensive to say”. Unless you’re making the point that his whole monologue is, “I am a creep and I say offensive things” it really isn’t the same. His monologue clearly wasnt a “creep character” since most of it read as sincere observational humor. People keep conflating self depreciation with “offensive character”. Take South Park(which I am not entirely defending just using as an example). For the most part, the most offensive things are said by Cartman because he is the character that is written to be the asshole and is treated as such. And sincere things are normally said by Kyle or Stan. Matt and Trey are writing both characters but who youre supposed to see the joke is on depends on the character. Shane doesn’t play a character, he does observations with some self depreciation. It’s really different

Yes, the difference is they frame the jokes in a way that an upper class moderate lib doesn’t feel bad about laughing at it. But the jokes are fundamentally just as offensive. If we’re going to moral police the content of the joke, then the framing doesn’t really matter.

And I would argue that actually is Shane’s whole shtick as a comedian. His persona is “guy who says off-color stuff but deep down is a liberal”.

That said, I’m not his biggest defender and I think he’s too friendly with actual rightwing figures, which is a much bigger issue than using crude language

Framing totally matters. All jokes have some truth to them. An offensive joke said with sincerity is asking you to agree with some truthful aspect of the joke itself. An offensive joke said by “offensive character” is asking you to understand that only a piece of shit would think that. I think it’s ok to laugh at how fucked up people can be. I think Shane delivered the “women are dressed like whores” line with as much sincerity as the rest of the monologue which was pretty sincere. And he hangs out with Right wing people, goes to right wing events, takes photos with Donald Trump, makes offensive jokes but really he is secretly a liberal? And his persona is “guy who says off color stuff but is deep down a liberal” or “guy who says off color stuff” but is deep down a liberal? Is the character deep down a liberal or is he deep down a liberal?

He’s asking us to laugh at what an offense oaf would say, but he just also is an offensive oaf.

Jokes don’t actually require you to agree that they are true! That is a very weird view on comedy. And I would never assume anything said by a comedian in a comedy set is “sincere”

2

u/Quasi-Yolo 10h ago

Jokes are only funny because some degree of truth set in reality. I’m not saying you have to agree with the words but agree with the truthful aspect of the joke. Obviously some absurdist comedy breaks that but Shane does observational comedy. He presents himself as an observer making observations that are truthful from his perspective. He is making these observations as Shane and the humor comes from the truth in them. If I told a joke that started out as “have you ever noticed that only [insert group] commits violence?” You probably wouldn’t find it funny because you have observed more than one group of people commit violence and would probably question what world view the comedian has. It could of course be a sarcastic joke about media representation or again playing a racist role. But that depends on the rest of the joke. Shane instead says “women dress like whores” then goes on to describe how the way they dress is whore like. And the punch line seems to be “but they consider me a creep for looking”.

2

u/milesper 10h ago

Yeah so all that is to say that you didn’t find the joke funny, which I agree with. But if you believe there must be some element of truth, then in this case it would be that women’s gym attire has gotten more revealing, which is just objectively true.

1

u/Quasi-Yolo 9h ago

Thank you now we can have a conversation. My problem is that the jokes is not funny and not true. For one, workout clothing has been revealing since like the 70s. Look back at old gym videos and you’ll see tight spandex and low cuts. It’s nothing new. And he only criticized women when men workout in just as revealing clothing. Just as many thirst trap gym dude influencers as women. It’s ironic he brought up the beer commercials he was in playing during football games. Not sure if you’ve seen the junk displaying pants they wear but it’s how athletes dress. Shane isn’t an idiot. He knew exactly what he wanted to say, exactly how we wanted to say it and exactly what the reaction would be. All of this just to get the chance to say women look like whores. It’s beyond undunny

3

u/milesper 9h ago

Well it wouldn’t make much sense to bring up guys since the whole joke is about him looking creepy for staring. And no, workout clothes in the 70s were not exactly the same, let’s not be ridiculous.

"Guy who only pretends to be an asshole, but he's always in character, so in the end, he's just actually an asshole."

1

u/No-Responsibility953 3h ago

Except he’s not always in character…you literally only engage with his content when he’s on tv.

1

u/deskcord 3h ago

But the point of the segment is “this is something offensive to say”.

The monologues point was "look what a weird and fat creep i am" - you clearly didn't watch it and you're just virtue signaling.

Did it land? No. But a joke not landing doesn't make it more offensive in intent.

-6

u/persistingpoet 11h ago

Again, they don’t use slurs. Whore is a slur.

10

u/milesper 11h ago

They literally did a Nick Kerr joke.

2

u/SeaWolfSeven 10h ago

Seriously the mental self preservation from the offended when pointing out they enjoy far more offensive jokes from the same show is amazing.

"No no that's different!"

Like how hypocritical can you be.

Was trying to find out if they said "r*tard" on WU because I thought I remembered them saying or implying it.

Found a transcript of Che's most recent special which uses it a hell of a lot for one of his stories.

So even if you want to reduce politics to "did they say a bad word or not," Che is absolutely on par with Shane.

2

u/GrayEidolon 7h ago

They make plenty of jokes that boil down to “women are bitches”.

6

u/The_Great_Goatse 11h ago

I respect that you’re offended, but you’re disingenuously paraphrasing what he said.

He was talking specifically about shorts that are “artificial bait-colored.” Which is a reference to the neon colors used for artificial fishing lures.

-1

u/persistingpoet 11h ago

And what’s the joke behind them being artificial bait coloured?

3

u/The_Great_Goatse 9h ago

I don’t know that the color comparison was itself a joke, but he certainly didn’t use the words “artificial bait” in the way that you were suggesting.

“Whore” is a slur now?? lmao you can’t be serious.

-2

u/cleverone11 11h ago

It doesn’t matter if you think it’s offensive. Literally nobody cares.

10

u/RegularGuyStuff2025 11h ago

Seems like a bunch of people care

1

u/lilchefievert 8h ago

For the next week, yes they will.

1

u/TrashFever78 2h ago

Yeah, a bunch of morons with no common sense. They'll be mad for a week then move on to something else that outrages then cause they addict to being mad.

-1

u/Effective-Elk-4964 10h ago

I just get sucked in.

“Whores” is a slur now? That’s awesome.

2

u/Brave_Box_553 9h ago

Um, what? Try saying it to your mom.

-1

u/Effective-Elk-4964 8h ago

If we’re parsing it this closely, he said something like “women at the gym dress like whores now.”

It’s not a slur that refers to all women, it refers specifically to a certain manner of dress.

So, as an example I wouldn’t say it to my Mom, because she’s a saint and dresses at least somewhat modestly. It would appear to just come out of nowhere.

But I get your reaction, because your town bicycle of a mom probably hears it all the time and that would get tiresome.

3

u/Brave_Box_553 7h ago

I will direct your attention back to your original “it’s a slur!?!?” post 🤓 …and then let you contemplate the fact that you, like Shane, think about women as whores. That’s why people are upset. It’s not the word. It’s the misogynistic worldview.

-1

u/Effective-Elk-4964 7h ago

Oh, no one was referring to all women, of which my Mom certainly is.

We’re just referring to whores, like your mom.

Glad I could help.

1

u/Brave_Box_553 6h ago

They’re called sex workers, bro

1

u/Effective-Elk-4964 5h ago

Depending on your age.

The truth is, we all come from different eras and I’m assuming you and I see the world differently based on when we’re born.

As another example we’d probably see the world differently than Brave_Box_1, who I assume is your eldest sister based on standard naming conventions and all the hints you’re dropping about what a gigantic whore your mother is.

1

u/Brave_Box_553 4h ago

So you’re…100 years old?

about referring to women exercising as whores who look like artificial bait

I don't even like Gillis as a comedian, but seems like a lot of work to twist someone's words just to get offended by it. He didn't say all women exercising at gyms are whores, he said something about being uncomfortable at gyms because there are women there in booty shorts and sportsbras "dressed like whores" filming content for tiktok and who get mad if he looks at them or gets in their shot. If you are not gong to the gym in shorts riding up your ass filming your workout for social media content, he was not talking about you. Sure it was a lame clichéd joke, but is weird to act like he said every woman who works out is a whore when that isn't even what he said
