Sad Girl Dinner ⛈️ Got broken up with because of my test results NSFW
I don’t know what I’m eating I just found it at work
I’m 22 and this guy I’m seeing asked me to get a full panel STD/STI test before we continue our relationship. I agreed because I know I’m clean. I found out I have HSV1, we opened the results together and prior to me opening my results he was all over me and kissing me. He saw it and then he backed away from me. I asked him what was wrong and he said he has to do his own research on it and then he left.
We were texting and I told him that I’m worried that my thing is bugging him and he sent me this: “I really like you and you've been sweeter than any other girl l've talked too but I don't think I'd be comfortable with it. Dating is already hard enough honestly but I'd still like to take you out and hangout this Saturday”
I’m so confused because I thought HSV1 cannot be transferred unless I have an active outbreak. I haven’t had one since I was a child, that was my first and only time I got a cold sore. It’s been nearly 2 decades since then. If he’s so worried about getting it I understand him not wanting to be with me, but we have already done stuff, so I kind of don’t get it?
I’m feeling really gross right now. I feel so incredibly disgusting and there’s no way for me to get rid of how dirty I feel. This thing is forever. I initially didn’t think it was a big deal until his reaction.

I'm not judging whatsoever about the HSV1 and neither should anybody else, but I may have some opinions about what's happening in that container and I'm very curious about how one finds random, unidentified food at their place of employment.

HSV1 and HSV2 can both be spread without an active outbreak and are insanely common in the States. If he "does his own research" and looks at actual studies he will find that out.
Chances are pretty high he has it as well and that neither one of you gave it to the other.

At the same time roughly 61% of sexually active adults have HSV 1 and about 18% have HSV 2. Overall about 4/5ths sexually active adults have one or the other.
And the chance of transmission without an active sore is very very low.
The stigma has more medical and social relevance than the disease itself and they are no longer routinely included in STI panels for the above reasons.

u/Alarmed_Tea_2874 APPROVED✨ 3h ago
I said below but it's because standard assay testing can give false positives. It's more accurate when someone is dealing with an active outbreak. And many people may have it but are asymptomatic and never have an active outbreak because their immune systems suppress.
53
u/CuteNautilus PO🥔TAY🥔TOES 2h ago
Even the blood test has something like a 10-30% chance of a false negative, so OP's boyfriend might still be an asymptomatic carrier. 🤷♀️

u/Alarmed_Tea_2874 APPROVED✨ 2h ago edited 2h ago
Exactly. Always ask for a Western Blot test if you are trying to get a definitive answer. It is the gold standard and much more accurate. 99% accuracy vs 81% on standard tests notorious for false positives.

I had a false positive as a teenager! It really messed with my head. But multiple tests over multiple pregnancies found no virus, and I've never had an outbreak. So who knows what happened when I was a kid.
5
u/Alarmed_Tea_2874 APPROVED✨ 1h ago
I'm sorry that happened to you! It can be traumatizing and it's why the index number matters enormously here. HSV IgG ELISA tests are highly sensitive, and low positive results can sometimes reflect nonspecific antibody binding or cross reactivity rather than an actual infection. This is why they don't routinely test people who are not at high risk of having been exposed or who are asymptomatic unless there is a reason to. And for HSV2, specifically, index values between 1.1 and 3.0 (Terri Warren is an expert in this and actually says up to 3.5...) are questionable, with false positives becoming more likely at the lower end. That’s why confirmatory testing with a Western blot is so important but a lot of the general public doesn't know about Western Blot or isn't informed by their doc.

Ugh, I know sometimes doctors test for it when patients push for testing beyond the standard test because I had an ex who did this. He then tried to use his test results to make me stay with him because I 'shouldn't date anyone else now that he infected me because I could spread it.' 🙄
Months after I broke up with him he sent me a second set of test results showing he didn't actually have it after all and tried to use that to get me back. That test is notoriously flaky, so who knows which result was accurate. I still wonder why his doctor didn't try to dissuade him or at the very least educate him about these tests. Or maybe they did... he is a very dumb man.

Hi, I’m a physician. This is not medical advice. Just want to reassure you that a massive portion of the population, if not most, will test positive for HSV-1, many of them having never even had a single outbreak. We do not routinely test for HSV-1, as these test results cause stress for no reason at all. He’s being very silly. Most of our population in the US will test positive and never ever notice a single thing.

As another physician, I agree with this message. So many people get hsv1 even as children. STDs should be destigmstized** but hsv1 isn’t even really considered an std because it’s passed on by kissing/sharing eating utensils. People don’t kiss their newborns to avoid hsv1 transmission to their babies.

Fun fact. You can get HSV 1 and 2 on any part of your body. It’s typically on the mouth or genitalia, but not always. They’re interchangeable as well. If you have an HSV 1 cold sore and perform oral sex on a partner, they can get HSV 1 on their genitals. Works both ways. Many many people have one or both. My bf gets cold sores. From the time he feels one coming on until it’s gone, we avoid kissing or other activities that could cause transmission. I won’t let him go downstairs anyway at the moment as I have tested positive for HPV. I likely gave it to him before we knew, but I’m not risking him getting throat cancer when we know for sure I have an active case. Get your HPV vaccines ladies!
7
u/ConditionBasic Plate Scraper 2h ago
OMG! I didnt know HPV could cause throat cancer. I tested positive for HPV (after vaccines and only being in long term monogamous relationships 🤷♀️). I have two high risk strains. They’re more likely to cause cancer. Unfortunately there isn’t a treatment for the virus. It typically clears. I’ve tested positive and needed biopsies the past two years. Most sexually active people have some form. The vaccine only covers the most high risk strains. That’s better than nothing though.

A full panel STI test does not routinely include HSV1 because it’s not considered a sexually transmitted disease. If you have cold sores it’s generally assumed you have oral herpes along with a large segment of the population, literally so many people have this condition from babies to the elderly. Of course you can give it to someone else by kissing but only when you have an outbreak. I feel like this guy is super ignorant and maybe just needs more information OR he’s a dick and now you know so you can avoid him.

For some people, it is going to be a big deal, and those aren’t your people. Statistics are on your side for finding a partner who also has the virus, or is okay with it. If someone is asking for a very full panel, that means that all of those scenarios are something that carries weight for that person. He just wasn’t your person.

I wish people made a bigger deal of HPV than they do HSV. Get your HPV vaccine if you haven’t. And everyone who’s sexually active should be getting tested for all STDs every 6 months or 1 year at least. More often for sluts like me. Also, PrEP is awesome. Love each other. Ok bye.

He’s gonna be a lonely dude if he’s gonna break up with someone over HSV1. That’s the cold sore virus and something like 70+% of people have the virus. Many people who have it only get 1 outbreak, their first, and are asymptomatic otherwise. It’s so common that many places won’t test for it in STI panels unless explicitly asked for this situation exactly—people get freaked out over something that is, by and large, not an issue.
I’m not saying that cold sores don’t cause any issues at all. I’m not one of those lucky people who is asymptomatic. I still get outbreaks when I get sick or stressed but im careful to take medicine and take other precautions to not spread it when I’m contagious. And even with that annoyance, it’s not a big deal.

I have literally had it since I was a baby because of my mother. Active outbreaks are the only way to spread it, and I'd know if not because my mouth is constantly all over my partner UNLESS I have a coldsore, he's never had them and hasn't gotten them the whole decade we've been together. They're cold sores, something most people I know have, and that guy sucks for reacting like that.
Edit; I've been told to can spread without an active outbreak so it comes down to personal risk tolerance at that point. I've been conditioned to view pretty much as a normal thing, as with most people I know, so the only caution anyone every takes is during active outbreaks.

Can absolutely be spread without an active outbreak. You don’t have to be experiencing an outbreak to be shedding the virus. And HSV1 can be spread from mouth to genitals.
Source: My ex passed HSV1 to me without an active outbreak via oral sex. And it is no fun having an outbreak down there. (And yes, it was HSV1. My genital sores were tested.)

Not so much for you since you said you have had an outbreak before, but Western Blot is the gold standard for HSV testing. Other tests are notorious for false positives. Just commenting here in case anyone else sees this.
I'm sorry, OP. Like 65% of the population has HSV1. And your risk of giving it to him without an active outbreak is low, not to mention extremely unlikely outside of its primary site.

The amount of people here saying the guy is a loser is nuts. The man got tested (says they opened them together) and must be negative, and is uncomfortable knowingly sleeping with someone with a positive, lifelong std. Nothing about that makes him a loser. I don't care if "so many people have it", doesn't mean he wants to risk it. Jfc.

I have HSV2 and I understand not everyone wants to take that risk. I disclose to all potential partners, and no one has ever decided to walk away. But if they did, I get it. I never had that option to walk away or at least know the risks (an old ex had it and never told me), and remember how scary it was when I had that first outbreak. So I get both sides in this situation, he isn't wrong for walking away and she isn't for feeling hurt.

I agree, the comments section is kinda wild. There's a huge section of men who pressure women into stuff having STIs and it's awful, I don't think anyone man or woman should feel shamed for wanting to do their own research on it or deciding they might not want to continue because of it.
Half the population having it doesn't mean anything because half the population ALSO doesn't have it. Despite it being common, not everyone has it. I think we need to stop saying that because everyone had it and it's common, you're wrong to have sexual boundaries over it.

My question is… did HE do the STI panel and open it with you? Id like to know if he has anything because its very likely he already has HSV1. If he doesnt then it proves he hasnt “gotten it from you”
Look? STI testing when you have multiple partners is a good thing. People should do it! But not if theyre going to react that way. Plus if he cared so much he shouldnt had sex/done sexual things with you?

I'm so sorry that he's reacting this way, but it's really not a big deal! It's super common. If you've ever had cold sores at all, you have it & always will! It's not as big of a deal as he's making it. Just avoid contact during active outbreaks & you are exactly right -- it will be just fine!

People are allowed to make these choices for themselves, you know. He doesn't owe you a relationship. He's decided this is a boundary he wants to keep and that's his right.
You could have had the same reaction to his results and I'd have been on your side too.
People are allowed and highly encouraged to have bodily autonomy and this is him doing so. That it's a "common disease" doesn't matter. He doesn't have it and he doesn't want to get it. This is fair and valid.
He's not a loser and he's not a bad guy. It's just unlucky that it didn't work out for you guys. Oh well. Move on.

I agree even though this is not a popular view. If a guy had an STI and tried to be upset with a woman, then he'd be ripped to shreds! Anyone is allowed to do their own research and want to think about things even if they've already been intimate. Anyone at anytime can decide they don't want to continue a relationship for any reason.
I know everyone says it's super common, but I don't think that's a reason to tell people they have to give up their comfort because they're a jerk if they dont.
And of lots of ppl I've known tested including myself don't have it, it's not something everyone has just because it is common! (And yes, the tests I've done myself and seen results of have included it, my doctor insists on full-screens)
