Some subreddit housekeeping

Hello pain fam, I hope today is slightly less horrible than usually for you. I wanted to take a moment and advise folks about commenting on OLD posts and comments. You haven't been able to post/comment on old posts for awhile because I turned archiving on. The other day, a scientist asked me to unarchive a post they were using to track their research. In order to do this, I had to turn off archiving for the ENTIRE SUBREDDIT.

This is posing some problems. Y'all jumped on these ancient posts like flys on poop. This is bad for a number of reasons. For one, the OP is probably no longer active, the people forget what the conversation was even about. Secondly, EVERY SINGLE TIME one of you comments on a post that is older than a month old, I have to deal with your stuff being in the queue. I remove almost every single one of these because they're oftentimes accounts that this is their very first interaction in our subreddit, which is indicative of a bot trying to farm karma (badly, I might add).

SO PLEASE LOOK AT THE TIME STAMPS ON THE POSTS YOU ARE INTERACTING WITH!!!!!

I’m going to break up with my boyfriend because I’m going to sign up for palliative care or euthanasia.

The title says it all. I love my boyfriend, but I can’t pretend I don’t cry every time I have to meet him because I’m in so much pain. I’ve been faking my happiness because he is a very successful person, and when we first met, he kind of expected me to get better because, at that time, I still had treatments to try. Now, I’ve tried all of those options. I haven’t told him yet, but he is starting to grasp the severity of my condition.

I know that if I tell him the truth, he will ask to break up, so I want to break up with him before my heart breaks even more than it already has. I’m in my early 20s, and I don’t want to waste his life or hold him back from the future he wants. He has made it clear that he doesn’t want a disabled partner, and that is completely fair. I love him, but I also understand that he has the right to choose the kind of life and relationship he wants. I just wish my circumstances were different.

I’ve cried so much because how is it possible that I have the ambition, but my body stops me? I hate my life, and I hope I can finally rest when I die.

What do we expect from our doctors?

I've been watching House lately to go to sleep. Today I was using AI to help me review the 1k+ pages of my medical reports and MRI's and the results reported from my doctors (a big inconclusive on everything). I think this meme is too close to accurate to make me laugh.

Chronic pain anger

Not sure if anyone else gets this.

When the pain gets to a level where existing hurts does anyone else get irrationally angry? Not like annoyed but a deep hatred for everything and any one.

Little things send you to a point where you want to look for lost kids in the wall. (Punching the wall or kicking it)?

Like someone existing in the same space as you will send you into a seeing red rage?

I feel so guilty when I get like that because my wife will ask something or even laugh a little hard and I want to scream or say something hurtful. She is the love of my life and I would never ever normally be that way towards her. But my pain i guess sends me to a dark place.

Does anyone else deal with this? Am I the issue? She suggested i talk to a therapist but I can't explain that its due to physical pain and nothing she has said or done. She also has chronic pain due to a past knee injury, but when she is hurting bad she gets quiet.

I don't lash out. I'll give short answers and keep my mood to myself so I don't attack her verbally. Not looking for advice, I just want to make sure I'm not the only one.

Edit Thank you all for your kind words and sharing. The over all consensus is I shoukd seek out a therapist. And I will. Last one I had kept asking "what do you want from this (therapy). And I'd explain my situation. In detail. And he would nod then ask again "ehat do you want from this". That continued on for 45 minutes. Talking in circles. I left more frustrated then when I first went in. So I'll find someone new, and competent and give it another go. Thank you everyone for sharing.

Forget restless legs… does anyone else get a restless WHOLE body?

I’ve been having a hard time sleeping lately and I’ve been using sleeping pills sometimes, but I’d rather find other things that help. Whenever everything gets quiet and I try to relax, I start noticing this subtle pain and restless feeling throughout my body, especially in my legs. It’s not really intense pain, just an uncomfortable feeling that makes it difficult to fully relax and fall asleep. I’m open to any advice. If you’ve experienced something similar, especially the restless feeling in your legs, what has helped you?

Started Journavx (suzetrigine)

4 hours after first dose and nerve pain was less. 3 doses down: constant throbbing deep nerve pain is gone, the walking on glass feeling in my feet when I walk is 90% better, the shooting pain when I go to stand or transition is 75% better.

What stinks is it’s only a bridge to get me thru a little waiting period for spinal cord stimulator and FDA has only approved the med for short term, 14 days!

Why is my body breaking down ?

• Upvotes

I just need to vent so feel free to ignore me lol. I’m 38, I feel 150. My left shoulder hurts constantly, it’s stiff and aches. When I sit up sometimes the nerves fire and it feels like I’m having a heart attack. My left hip pops and clicks constantly when I walk and the foot drags. It burns in the hip joint. No one wants to take me seriously and scan those areas. Just stretch, try ice. You aren’t mobile enough. Blah blah. I stretch numerous times a day, I get at the very least 40 mins of exercise a day(my dog gets 3-4 walks that can be anywhere from 10mins to 30 depending on her! Not me. If she wants to keep going we do! I get up off the couch/bed every hour so I don’t stiffen up. I’m just..tired. I want one day where I don’t hurt ya know?

Problems with THC

I live in an illegal state and I love the cannabis. It helps me in ways other medications won't. Since I live in an illegal state, all Pain contracts contain language that bans THC use. There is a way to get around this, via your family doctor. Dronabinol has recently been lowered from schedule 2 to schedule 3, meaning your family doctor can now prescribe off label. Dronabinol contains active THC so your tests won't be flagged if you smoke on top of it. Consider advocating for dronabinol with your family physicians, if you don't want to give up the use. Fir me personally, RSO is amazing for inflammation and pain.

A coworker was trying to relate to me, but ended up giving me a panic attack.

I was talking to a coworker at lunch about our lives and she talked about her foot pain and I said, "oh girl, I totally understand I have fibromyalgia and other pain stuff." She said, "oh my mom has that. It's gotten much worse over the years and she barely leaves the bed anymore and cries a lot....you seem to be doing ok tho!" And y'all ... There are days I can't get off my heating pad/ do things for more than 10 minutes. When I went for my walk after eating I started hyperventilating. I feel like she was trying to relate but missed the mark and now I'm scared for the future. Sorry idk what the point of this was, just couldn't hold it in anymore.

What have you given up on?

• Upvotes

I have given up on medical relief.

Yesterday, I realized that I’m only going to doctor’s appointments because others expect me to. I know there will never be relief and I’d rather save my money.

I have given up on feeling understood.

I can’t count how many times I have seen a person’s eyes glaze over when I try to share/explain/describe how I am feeling. I’m as tired as they are with the same thing everyday.

Speaking of tired, I have given up on not feeling tired. Tired of pain, tired of being seen as either sickly or a liar, and tired of being tired.

What have you given up on?

Years of unexplained nerve symptoms, extensive testing, accidentally discovered valium is the only thing that helps. I'm so unhappy.

I'm 32F, hypermobile, and spent years experiencing unexplained widespread sensory disturbances (dysaesthesias): crawling, prickling, cold/wet sensations on my face, chest, neck and mouth, occasional stabbing pains, etc. Separate from my usual mechanical joint and nerve pain.

In 2022 I underwent extensive neurological investigations, including MRIs, EMG, nerve conduction studies and blood tests. Nothing sinister was identified, but no real explanation either. The consultant was incredibly patronising and left me feeling as though he thought I wanted something to be wrong. He suggested CBT and implied I was mentally ill and trying to find problems where there were none. I could have jumped through more hoops proved him wrong and tried for more tests but at that point I was fed up and done.

I was relieved it wasn't MS or something progressive and decided I'd live with the discomfort, I still had a miserable quality of life. I abandoned further investigation because of how I was treated and because every test seemed to come back fine. non specific scattered lesions and one one my cervical spine but nothing malignant or suggestive of MS.

I tried pregabalin, amitriptyline and duloxetine. They gave my opioids too. None adequately helped. Pregabalin was particularly awful: dizziness, cognitive impairment, weight gain, feeling drunk, and horrendous withdrawal. I didn't feel safe driving on it despite medical reassurance.

Eventually I used non-prescribed diazepam to help me withdraw from all the meds I couldn't tolerate and felt useless. It helped me come off every single one on my own. I intended to stop diazepam afterwards too, but remained on roughly 10mg nightly for around a year. I became physically dependent, but never chased a high, escalated my dose or wanted it recreationally.

During that year, my unexplained sensory symptoms gradually disappeared. I didn't even connect it to diazepam. I was just delighted they were gone. My normal mechanical hypermobility pain remained.

Now I'm tapering diazepam, down to 5mg, and suddenly the sensory disturbances have returned as badly as in 2022. Out of desperation I tried my previous 10mg dose and within 30 minutes virtually everything disappeared.

I know benzodiazepine withdrawal can itself cause neuropathic symptoms. I cannot prove diazepam was treating my original condition rather than this being withdrawal-related. But my symptoms existed for years before I'd ever taken a benzodiazepine, and disappeared during the year I was taking one.

I don't know whether I have something like small-fibre neuropathy (which I'm aware is harder to diagnose and none of my tests would pick up) abnormal central sensory processing or something else entirely. I don't care I just hate this. And hate not being believed.

What frustrates me is that diazepam was far better tolerated than any of my prescribed treatments. No noticeable next-day impairment, no awful physical side effects, and seemingly sustained relief without dose escalation. I understand that doesn't eliminate its long-term risks or dependence potential, but my experience of pregabalin and others meds? was substantially worse. some were total hell to come off. Valium reduction comparatively has been easy aside from the return of nerve issues.

I'm upset for two reasons: the condition I thought had finally resolved and I could just think "yup weird as hell but it's gone" may never have gone away, and the only medication that apparently helped was something I never wanted to take long-term and can't ever be prescribed or admit I was taking illegally without them misunderstanding me and stigmatising me even more.

I'm reluctant even to discuss this with a doctor. It was difficult enough being taken seriously before. Admitting I used non-prescribed diazepam and asking why it helped so much feels like a guaranteed way to be labelled drug-seeking.

I'm not looking to get high or justify staying on benzodiazepines. I want a diagnosis, an explanation, or if I can't get any of that just some fucking quality of life. I just feel trapped between treatments that make me ill and one that apparently works but isn't considered suitable long-term, I'd get judged into oblivion for and had the least number of bad side affects or genuine physical risk to health??

I'm so unhappy. Any suggestions. I want to cry.

Overwhelmed, exhausted, and don’t where to go or how to get help

I need some sort of encouraging words or something. Posted here before, but I’m truly exhausted. 53-year-old female will break your plexus palsy on the right since birth and total reverse shoulder replacement on the left in 2024. I don’t have any pain necessarily in my right arm, but I am beside myself in my left arm. I’ve been back to ortho who sends me to Neuro who sends me back to ortho and sends me to therapy send me to psychiatry, etc. etc. it never ends and I don’t get any relief. I’m tired of not being able to keep with basic things like housework, yardwork, taking care of my son, etc. I don’t know what to do. I guess I’m just hoping that somebody on here can tell me that it will actually get better because so far it ain’t working for me.

My birthday is in a month

Once again, my birthday is approaching. It’s a month today. I’ll be 28.

I don’t wanna celebrate it. There’s no point. I’m not worth celebrating. I’m fat. I’m ugly. I barely passed high school. I only have an undergrad degree. I’m crippled. I’m using a cane to walk at not even 30. I’m in a job with not great pay. I do lots of volunteering for anti-bigotry organisations, I give welfare advice professionally (that’s the not great paying job), I pick litter when I can, I hang out with my friends, I try to be a good person and try to be worth celebrating but I’m just not. I’ll still be in pain, I’ll still be tired, I’ll probably be using a stick to get around on the day. Why bother? Things are terrible in this world right now. Why should I be celebrating myself when everything sucks?

I’m having faith that as the excitement builds I’ll feel better and actually want gifts and to celebrate but right now I really don’t want to.

For those who take ketamine for chronic nerve pain, have you found oral ketamine (tablets) or IV ketamine infusions more effective?

My pain specialist only offers oral ketamine, but I’m wondering whether it’s worth looking for a clinic that offers infusions. Are infusions more effective or safer long-term than tablets, or is oral ketamine worth trying first?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your personal experiences, especially if you take ketamine for neuropathic pain. Thank you!

Ankle Pain - PRP or prolotherapy?

After 10 years/three ankle sprains, I finally got an MRI. I have a split tear of the peroneaus brevis tendon and my anterior talofibular ligament is completely torn. I also have some arthritis.

I saw an orthopedic doctor today who gave me two options: prolotherapy or PRP. PRP is more expensive ($1500/session) but would probably require only one or two sessions, whereas prolotherapy is $550/session and I’d need probably 3-4 sessions. Has anyone done either?

I hate it when they all flare at once

I have had knee pain in both knees for roughly 50 years now. Sometimes it flares up and instead of a dull annoying pain I get a sharp shooting pain in one or both knees. Sometimes I also get another dull ache in my hips. In the last 5 years I also got a much worse pain in my sit bone area, which I've discovered is an area that has many different sources of pain so every medical specialty claims they can fix it, but can't. Most days that pain is enough to just sap all my energy. But some days if flares up enough where I'm basically bed ridden because I can't sit, even on all my seat cushions and pillows.

Today I'm getting all of them - sharp pains in one knee, dull ache in the hips, and the worst pain in my sit bone that I've had in the last 5 years. Sigh.
