Indian restaurant takeaway. £30 for 3 curries can be stretched to 6 meals for me. Is it affordable for weekly or fortnightly orders?

My local Indian restaurant costs around £10 - £12 for a meat curry. But the curry portion is 2 dinners for me. I cook my own rice.

So 3 meat curries is around £30 (excluding about 3 quid for the delivery). But that's 6 meals for me at £5 a meal.

Slightly sloshed at night and I can order 6 restaurant meals at my doorstep for £5 each! (Cheaper than Spoons right?) The meals are more fragrant and tasty than the curries I make. So can I order regularly or are there issues that I need to think about? (The restaurant has 5 hygiene rating and has been around for many years).

Serious Answers Only People with chronic health issues, what's the dumbest 'medical advice' you've received?

I'll start, I've suffered migraines since I was about 11. Here are my favourites from people who are not doctors or nurses:

- eating apples. Something to do with the crunch of the apple for the jaw

- get all my teeth removed

- put my feet in as hot water as I can stand with mustard in it

And like most people with migraines the most recurring ones are "stop drinking alcohol" and "stop eating chocolate"

Bonus one is when a friend asked if I wanted to go on a bike ride and I said I can't cos I have a migraine, he said "I bet the exercise and fresh air will make you feel better" and I replied "I bet after 10 minutes I will be vomiting" I have that screenshot saved in my phone

Serious Answers Only Why have gig tickets become so expensive?

The wife just saw the Nickelback presale go up for Leeds next year. Just been on now to try and buy some but they are starting at over £100 each, some are even reaching £250+

Same scenario with slipknot, to sit in the gods at the back your looking at a minimum of £150.

So that's two tickets costing north of £200 before you even factor in travel, hotel, food, beer etc....

Some artists actually seem to care. We're seeing Manic Street Preachers supported by Suede next month and each of those tickets were only 60 quid each.

Is anyone else finding this a bit ridiculous?

Why do people leave one ‘in the pump’?

2.3k Upvotes

Been working in a pub for a bit and it’s fairly common that people (tends to be older men, dunno if that’s relevant) will pay for 2/3 pints at once and then only get one, come back and get the others later.

I don’t get it. It’s not easier, it actually makes life more difficult explaining to a different member of staff you’ve paid already, checking tills and receipts. It’s not cheaper, these people tend to get the same thing in the same amounts so it’s not like it’s to keep spends down, you’ve still got to wait and explain what you want, the only difference is a 0.7 second time save from not tapping your card again.

I get it when they’re leaving it for someone else, but when it’s a busy evening and you’ll be back in 20 minutes anyway? Why? Is it to feel ‘part of’ something? Is it to flex your status as a regular? Is it a weird attempt
to trick yourself into thinking it’s free? I can’t see the point of it at all.

Serious Answers Only Beyond a few basics for the short term is 'prepping' pointless?

So preppers seem to be having something of a renaissance right now. I'm not judging and actually the idea of being somewhat self sufficient in an emergency appeals. But practically most people can only be so self-reliant for so long, especially in the face of the kind of scenarios that would require it. Like beyond a certain point its logically madness to think you're going to have everything you need long-term and in some kind of societal breakdown wouldn't you be better off learning how to improvise and think on your feet rather than hoarding supplies?

Have I misunderstood a blind company's description of what I purchased, or are they in the wrong?

Ordered some blinds from BlindsDirect. I wanted them to have thermal and blackout lining, but when on the website I noticed a final (to me, "most luxury") lining ("interlined") that I assumed was these and then some more (the most expensive).

However, they've arrived and don't have blackout at all.

I contacted support, who said blackout isn't included in interlined. I'm a bit confused what I've paid extra for, and found the diagrams on their website confusing, as to me it looks like the diagram is saying the blind fabric is the dark grey layer, the "Premium" type layer is the cream layer, the "Thermal and Blackout" type layer is the light grey, and the "Interlined" is both combined:

When reading the description of Interlined (you click to see more), I now realise it doesn't say blackout anywhere, but does reference it increasing thermal performance and uses the word "complete" - so I assumed again it was the option that was both premium and thermal blackout. I suppose this is the contentious bit, but I remember when purchasing thinking "well it shows the thermal blackout light grey layer in the diagram!".

Their support is taking the stance that I've misunderstood and the diagrams are fully clear. In fairness, they've offered me 50% off a reorder, but I just want to sense check if I am being a donkey (very open to this being the answer if I am), or if it actually is a bit misleading and they need to update their graphic/consider a refund. I can't really justify spending 50% again.

Serious Answers Only How to dispose of a swollen battery?

Hi, I have a swollen battery. However I am very confused on how to safely dispose of it. I have called my local council, and the fire service general number. Both have recommended to take it to a recycling centre, however I dont have a car, and my recycling centre doesn't accept pedestrians in. So im not able to walk in.

Besides that, I have not been given any other information. I have been told to go to a supermarket, however they will not accept swollen or damaged batteries due to fire risk. There must be some way to dispose of this if you dont have a car. If anyone has any suggestions or information that would be great.

The battery itself is from a portable charger, about a phone sized one. I also dont have many people who would be able to take me, due to timings and limited people i know in the area. Im honestly out of ideas and ideally id like to get rid of this battery as soon as possible

EDIT: I called a local phone repair shop, and they took it! They deal with swollen phone batteries alot!

You're paying for your meal at a restaurant as a large group. What's your strategy?

Personally, I'm a divide by group size kind of guy. If there's 12 people, just add it all up, add your tip and divide by 12. Everyone pays the same, and the waiter just walks round and everyone taps for the same amount.

I go out all the time with work colleagues in big groups and this is the strategy every time. The idea being, it just averages out over time if one person has more or less. And really, once you work it out the difference is usually +-£5 at most. It's fast and easy.

I have friends who are convinced this is the most complicated way to pay and is hugely unfair. Which I would get if the difference was massive or if we all didn't have well paid jobs. Their preferred way to pay is to have a single person pay the full bill, share bank details in WhatsApp, send receipt in WhatsApp and then everyone has to remember to tally up their bill and transfer the money across. To me that just seems needlessly complicated.

Serious Answers Only Suspect neighbour killed several trees under TPO. Is it worth reporting to the council?

Neighbour on the road has applied for extension since planning that would see it subdivided and substantial changes to the dwelling sizes, access and overall layout on the plot. There are a large number of objections to the planning already, some relating to a number of large mature trees on the property that would require them cut down or having them very close to the homes on the plot if planning went ahead. A tree survey was carried out about 5 months ago. Only one tree was noted as having something wrong with it (damage, disease or dying?). I have noticed this week that 4 of the largest evergreen trees on the property and now almost fully dead. They are almost entirely brown.

I’m almost certain the owners of the property have killed the trees on purpose so they’ll eventually be removed due to hazard which will then remove the issue of the TPO and impact the trees had on planning permission.

Is there any point raising my suspicions with the council or planning officers at this point?

Serious Answers Only Should BSL be taught in schools?

British Sign Language was recognised as a language on its own right in 2003. It was 'legally' recognised in 2022 in England, Wales & Scotland when the BSL Act came into force. Should we be teaching our children to learn and use it?

Serious Answers Only Can teachers give me some brutally honest advice about joining the profession? I'm considering a career change from software engineering to teaching

Hi Reddit!

I am a software engineer with 5+ years of experience in the engineering industry, and I am considering starting the SCITT program to become a secondary school computing teacher. Due to the rules of r/TeachingUK, I'm unable to ask what teaching is like there, so I thought I'd ask here instead!

I've spoken to some teachers who have been nothing but supportive of my career change, whereas others have told me to run for the hills and never look back. I’m in desperate need for some honest advice, so I am going to list some (probably quite stupid!) questions down below. Please don’t feel like you must answer all of them, I am more than grateful for any responses I get.

  1. What age group do you teach (primary/secondary), and why did you choose that age group? If you teach secondary, what subject do you teach, and why?
  2. How did you get into teaching and what was your experience like?
  3. What aspects of teaching would make you recommend (or not) being a teacher to someone?
  4. How would you describe your work-life balance?
  5. If you teach at a school in your local area, what is it like to see your students in public?
  6. I’m a backing singer in a band that performs regularly. How do you think this hobby would be perceived within teaching? For example, could performing explicit songs outside school hours cause issues if students or parents heard?
  7. What has your experience been when interacting with parents?
  8. Have you noticed any difference in how often teachers get ill compared to other professions?
  9. How do you personally manage the constant need to “be on” and energised when teaching?
  10. What do your holidays look like? Do you get to enjoy the holidays or are you compelled to work?

Thank you so much for your time, I really appreciate it 😊

What funny British programmes are good to watch when ill?

I have the flu and I’m going between sleeping and watching drivel on the tv. I need a bit of comedy to cheer me up. Any good sitcoms, old or new welcome, to distract me from the horror that is this.
I’m marginally delusional with fever dreaming so I think easy watching may be the best.

Lovingly,
Sick note

Are you happier as an adult than you were as a kid?

(41M) am much happier now than I was before I turned 18, and I have no idea why. On paper, school should have been a great time. I had great friends, the work usually wasn't that hard, and even though it seemed boring at the time, most jobs are much duller and less varied.

I just prefer being an adult. I like my job. I've had a few different ones, and although I genuinely disliked some of them, I was still happier than I was at school.

I wonder if it mainly comes down to how puberty affects people. I think it hit me hard and early, and may have sent me into a mild depression. Once I became an adult, that seemed to lift.

What are other people's experiences?

Serious Answers Only The Finnish and Dutch governments have supposedly distributed hard copies of an emergency preparedness guide so people can use it even if there’s a temporary power shutdown. Has the UK ever distributed hard copies of a similar guide? Might it be a good idea to do that now, before the winter?

Just one that covers simple steps to take in case of emergencies. Could be a useful guide to have on your bookshelf.

What tiny bit of local knowledge do you have that would be completely useless to anyone outside your area?

There’s one roundabout near me where getting into the wrong lane (technically the correct one) adds a few minutes minutes at busy times, so I automatically move over ridiculously early.

Serious Answers Only Could plain white van be genuine emergency vehicle?

While travelling on on the M6 a fairly dirty 4 year old white Peugeot Partner van turned on undercover police style flashing LEDs and a siren to move people out the fast lane and proceed about 90mph.

Would this have been a genuine emergency vehicle? The registration number shows both taxed and MOTd, which wouldn't be normal if it was a police vehicle?

Serious Answers Only How to deal with upstairs neighbours Cats?

I live in a ground floor flat. We’ve had new people move in above. They are pretty inconsiderate of others. They filled the communal bike storage shed with camping stuff and all the bits they don’t want to store in their house. And when asked about it said they didn’t have enough storage in their flat. Yeah, same as everyone else who lives here 🤬

They’ve got 2 cats. They either wedge the communal door open, all our parcels are stored in that foyer so anyone could walk in. Or the cats sit at my windowsill and meow all evening.
I’ve let the cats in a couple of times so they can go to their own door and meow. But I’ve noticed they put them back out so it starts again a few minutes later.

I haven’t spoken to them yet but am fairly sure I’ll get a flippant response that they have no way of getting their cats without wedging the door, and that they can’t stop them sitting on a windowsill. It frustrates me as I purposefully haven’t got pets, I want a dog, because I live in a flat and if it barks etc it’s much worse for everyone else as well.

I know it’s not the cat’s fault but any humane ways to deal with this and keep them off the windowsill.
I did think loud booming music all evening until late as the cats won’t come near and it’ll annoy the owners in the flat above. But I’m not that much of an a**hole.

What is a “small” car by car washing standards?

I drive a Toyota Yaris. A lot of people would class this as a ‘supermini’. However, the two hand car washes in my area always charge mine as a medium sized car.

It’s only a few quid extra so not the end of the world, but it’s just bugging me as surely you can’t get much smaller than a Yaris?

So what’s considered a small car by their standards?

How do night shift workers deal with construction noise?

• Upvotes

My neighbours are perpetual home improvers. Their current project is a loft conversion.

My company is starting a project with an American client, which likely means some of my team will have to do night shifts. I'm panicking a little because the neighbours' construction starts at 8 am and the night shift would probably end around 4am.

I've looked online, and people recommended a white noise machine and earplugs. I did a test run this morning, and it just seems like the drilling and hammering cuts straight through. The majority of the work seems to be directly next to my bedroom. Hoping someone has any tips or advice

How can I feel less lonely this Christmas?

I love Christmas but get the feeling it's gonna be a lonely one this year.

I came out of a relationship this year, my family doesn't really take it seriously as a celebration and my circle has gotten smaller and smaller.

The thing is, I still love Christmas markets, the music, the films, and it's a time of year I associate with connection.

I don't know why, but my desire for a good Christmas is a lot stronger this year.

Any advice for rituals I can do alone, or for how other people get on at this time of year?
