shoplifters

We caught a customer on camera trying to shop lift yesterday. He put the item in his pocket and his companion signaled to him there is a camera and he put the item back. They did end up taking three items, but were waiting for a moment to shoplift. Should I ban them from the store or have a conversation with them and let them continue shopping with us?

Need advice on cold shoulders.

So, I'll start this off by saying I'm a somewhat new hire at a grocery store (Been here for 3 weeks). I've never worked retail positions. But, I've worked in the food industry for years so I understand customer service and all that stuff. Even still talk to a lot of people in that industry I now consider friends. I work in the bakery department of my store. I've always wanted to work retail since I've dealt with too many customers/managers from hell in the fast food industry.

Coming from an area of fast food, this place is slow. Maybe a bit too slow since I tend to complete my tasks hours before I'm supposed to leave. But, there's definitely something here I'm not getting in terms of socialization? Never had a problem with a customer. But, the break room always goes quiet when I walk in.

Being only 19 might not be the best front. But, I always like to say I've had 20 years of experience based on the tasks of my old jobs. This new grocery store experience has been amazing. Well, the job itself atleast. I have been in many arguments that I've had to de-escalate with middle aged or older coworkers. Writing this after getting yelled at by the lead of the deli (the bakeries nextdoor neighbor) for some playful banter I guess I misinterpreted? Shook me to my core since I thought I was getting along with the guy.

I don't know. I'm trying my hardest to not seem like an alien to these people (since they look at me like I am one). Any advice on how a new hire like me could try to genuinely make some friendly connections here instead of worrying everyday I'm gonna get written up just from asking how someones day is?

Will I be fired if I call out within the first two weeks of starting my job?

I started a new job last Monday. Everything has been going well, but today after work I got a very bad sore throat. It hurts terribly and I feel very lethargic and tired. I’m working tomorrow, and as of now I don’t feel well enough to go. I also don’t want to get anyone else sick either. To make matters worse, I’m opening the store and so there won’t be anybody in the store 1-2 hrs before I start, meaning I can’t call out before my shift starts. They never told me how to call out, the process, or what to do when sick. My manager also seems to be pretty stern, not super strict but she isn’t extremely nice either. I’m honestly a little scared but I feel terrible. I’ve worked at other jobs before, and the didn’t mind me calling in when my shift started but that was due to store policy. I’m unfamiliar with this store’s policy and how nice management is. I’m in Canada and I’m part-time. Do you guys think I’ll be fired if I call in?

Background check for Ross

I had my interview today and it went well, they told me they were offering me a contingent job interview and they’d send the background check and after it comes back continue to the onboarding. It’s been a day and I still haven’t gotten the background check email to do it so i’m wondering if that’s normal or if somethings wrong.

Crashing out

Every day someone new quits and i am not Evenexaggerating. People leave without a job lined up or walk out simply. It is super overwhelming and frusterating. I know some were gonna leave ,but ever since new managment steped in. It has been nothing but pure chos. I have never felt more unappreciated. I have to stay at this job until i can find something close to me . All the jobs are part time and the full times one are farther away which does not make sense gas /uber wise for same pay. Idk how people are finding jobs over the state hrly pay. It does not help the managment is not very helpful. Everyday i found it harder to pretend i am happy. I enjoy

Retail ,but idk what career move to even make. It is so silly bc everytime someone leaves i cry regardless of my work repor with them. I feel like i am losing it and i am out of leave time. I heard unemployment is not an option ... I feel doomed and stuck with the job market . I think we had about 6 proccesors total today and due to shortage of ppl most of us are helping out with other positions. Also if a cashier is changing their position to full time proccesor is it normal that therr hrs are dif then the rest of us?

What would you do?

I'm in a tough spot right now, and I'd like to hear from others who work in the retail industry.

Background: I have worked for the same company for about 11 years, and I've been full-time for about 5 of those. I have great benefits, but I have to work weekends and holidays like most retail workers. I don't hate my job, though. It's tolerable.

However, I think the reason it's been tolerable is that up until now, the company has accomodated my minor concessions. I have to leave about an hour early on most Thursdays, and they've been OK with that. I didn't think this was a big deal, but apparently, it is.

Today, my boss came to me and said that I have to make a choice: I can choose to leave an hour early and do this after-work activity every week, or I can change to open availability (no set schedule, 7 days a week, store only closes on Christmas day). If I decide to set my own availability and request to leave an hour early on Thursdays, he will make me part-time, and I will lose health insurance and no longer accrue PTO. I would also lose everything else, like dental, vision, LTD and STD. I'd lose everything. But in a way, forgoing this after-work activity feels like I'd be losing everything too. I've been a part of this athletic team for over 2 years, and now my employer is asking me to give it up. Honestly, it's the only thing that gets me through the week. I love doing it and I would be absolutely crushed if I had to let it go. I truly believe I would become depressed and unable to cope. It's that important to me.

I know what my gut is telling me to do, but I want to hear from other people. This job is all I've known for 10 years now, but things are changing in the upper levels of the company and they've decided to put the hammer down and be more strict. I feel disrespected, but even worse.. I don't think I could forgive myself if I chose to give up on my team in order to appease the company. I would feel dead inside, like I gave up my life (and my happiness) just to keep working here full-time. Even worse, next year I jump up to a higher PTO accrual rate if I stay full time. I'd be losing a LOT by going part-time... but then again, you can never get your life back, and the company could theoretically let me go at any time anyway. That’s just how jobs are.

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. What would you do? Give up your happiness to keep all the perks that a full-time position offers, or drop to part-time and be genuinely happier with your life?

Having trouble logging into WorkJam for Ross — first shift tomorrow

Hi everyone! I recently started the onboarding process for Ross Dress for Less, and I’m having trouble logging into WorkJam. I’m not sure if I’m using the wrong login information or if there’s something else I need to do to get access.
Tomorrow is supposed to be my first shift from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, and I still need to finish some of my orientation videos. They didn’t really explain what I’d be doing during tomorrow’s shift, so I’m a little confused about whether I’m supposed to finish the videos in-store or if I need to complete anything before I arrive.
For anyone who works at Ross, how did you log into WorkJam for the first time? Do you need a specific username, employee ID, or invitation from a manager? Also, should I just ask a manager for help when I arrive tomorrow?
I’d really appreciate any advice! I just want to make sure I’m prepared for my first shift. Thank you! ❤️

First job interview since 2009 is tomorrow!

I’ve been on disability since 2012, I haven’t worked since then. I’m doing better and can work now. This will hopefully be my first job in a long time. It’s for Bealls department store. I’m really excited and nervous at the same time. What can I expect at the interview and how do I prepare? I also applied to bath and body works and Kirklands but I haven’t heard back from them yet. All for for seasonal positions, as I only want part time hours atleast for now.

How do you actually get a retail job these days?

Hi everyone, I’m 20F, studying fashion retail mgmt (online - 1st year) from South Africa, and I’m looking for a permanent position at primarily clothing stores for some experience and extra cash since I’m always home.

However, when I go to stores and I ask the staff they tell me to go on their website and the website just has corporate positions, which is not what I’m looking for, or it’s positions not in my area. I remember people used to say we should specifically ask the manager and even give them our cv but it seems like that doesn’t work anymore because the staff just says the manager is going to say the same thing they just told me so it’s pointless to call them.

Since festive season is approaching, I’m worried managers will automatically assume I want a temporary student gig when I’m looking for a permanent one but I am open to casual/part-time if that’s all they have, like I can take that you know.

So does anyone know how to actually get a job at these clothing retailers?

I had an incident with a coworker and management/corporate don't seem to care. What do I do?

I work on the truck/freight team at a retail store, unloading merchandise and stocking the sales floor. Our team is supposed to have 5–6 people, but we’ve been understaffed for most of the year, making it difficult to keep up with the workload.
A coworker I’ve been close to for years suddenly became extremely aggressive with me one day. After repeatedly insulting me and ranting about my work performance, he got in my face while holding an open box cutter dangerously close to my body. I felt threatened and left the room. Our supervisor and store manager were both off that day, so I reported the incident to my supervisor as soon as she returned. She said she’d handle it.
He ignored me for weeks before eventually acting like nothing happened. His behavior remained erratic, and he later had a separate confrontation with our supervisor that reportedly almost became physical. She eventually quit and transferred departments, leaving us without a supervisor for two months.
Once we got a new supervisor, I reported the coworker again. My new supervisor told me he’d actually been warned about this employee when he was hired and said he’d inform the store manager. After several reports, he encouraged me to speak with her directly.
During our meeting, the store manager documented everything and revealed that multiple employees had reported this coworker’s behavior. She even asked whether he’d ever thrown anything at me because he’d reportedly done so to another employee. She promised to escalate the situation to corporate and have it addressed.
However, I’ve recently learned from my supervisor that she never followed through on that promise.
I’m incredibly frustrated and feel completely let down by management. I’ve seen other employees fired much faster for far less serious issues, so I don’t understand why this coworker appears to be facing no consequences despite multiple complaints and an incident involving a potentially dangerous weapon.
I’ve put in my two weeks’ notice, and this is my final week. I’m considering whether I have grounds to pursue legal action against the store for failing to address a threatening workplace situation or against the coworker for his behavior.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Did I do the right thing? And what are my options moving forward before I leave?

I wonder if…

…the last 10 years were real?
I left Target a while back after being a TL for over 10 years & life still feels surreal. I literally feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone because it warped my perception of/on time. It’s been a couple of years since I left, and I am still adjusting to living a life where I don’t work at my old Target.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is this even the right subreddit for this post?
