So it's been around a year since I posted about being sexually harassed in the shelter.
I came back and I was reading the comments , and I think I wanna give some advice of my own.
The first being understanding your right are vital as a homeless person.
A lot of the people were saying that if I had spent the night sleeping in the cold in central park would give me the attitude adjustment that I need and my beggars can't be choosers , and that I don't have experience living in these environments.
All of which aren't true..... a but about me i started my honelessness journey in tyler texas hitchicking down the highway sleeping outaide with socks on my habds. Ive been homeless in texas, hawaii, NYC, Milwaukee (in the winter BTW) and i've hitch hiked down the west coast. There were times where I have been injured , and the only safe place to sleep was the ER I've slept on the side of the highway before i've been in towns and cities that are hostile actively hostile towards homeless people
And I also have a background in case management working for homeless shelter. My job was to advocate for the people in the shelter and enforce the rules and that meant kicking people out for certain behaviors.
I noticed in my post. There was a lot of sentiment about beggars can't be chooser, which to a certain degree is true. My only pushback and the reason im making this post.
you're one hundred percent valid in advocating for your rights and should always do so. It's not a privilege to advocate for yourself. It's a right
Every shelter is different when I was in Dallas.I tried to go into this place called Dallas life nd it was very Christian themes and not in a good way. For an organization claiming to be Christ, like they charged people $15 a day to stay there and also require them to abandon their belongings in order to come in.And while they were staying there, they would be subject to weird rules to orevent "tempation" as a queer person , I found this very weird and off putting. So I made the decision that I was gonna sleep outside in the cold instead.
I went to nyc with the very limited money I had i landed and JFK airport saturday night in the wintertime , I walked around jamaica , queens all night and wandered untill I made my way to the intake building. And then I spent the next year in the shelter system in new york city. Fast forward to last year.I found myself back in the nyc shelter system and I encountered those issues that I posted about who see it on my profile.
Long story short
advocating for my rights got me housing faster.
A lot of people were telling me that the issue is me and that beggars can't be choosers , and that I should just do when I need to do to get along in those environments....
No that's not how that works.
If you can be openly, racist openly homophobic, and threaten people, and sexually harass people without getting kicked out of the shelter system , if that behavior is okay within that system , there's nothing wrong with advocating for yourself and demanding better treatment. that's absurd to think otherwise. Read the fine print in your rights as a recipient of services. They're not just rules that you have to follow. Those are rules that the facility has to follow too.
And a lot of you guys were right that they weren't going to enforce the rules. they didn't want to, but they couldn't ignore the complaints and they couldn't just dismiss me legally, because they have their own legal obligations and instead of solving the problem, they housed me faster. Always stand up for your rights. I've been in my apartment since february. And I never gave up on myself and neither should you.
And I hope somebody's struggling with that exact same issue reads both of the posts and the comments underneath them and is inspired to advocate for themselves. I had that director putting up pride posters on every floor and he got in trouble for denying me a grievance form when I asked for it because he didn't wanna deal with the paperwork that he could not ignore. We got very aquainted with each other and in the end because I stood up for myself , the fastest way for me to get out of his hair was him to put me in housing. His limited mechanisims to address discrimination in the shelter are his problem and not mine, no tolerating abuse isint valid.
