lookingfor Obgyn Recommendations? (incl. rant about IUD)

Got my IUD replaced yesterday and it was a horrible experience. I specifically asked for pain management because the process is extremely painful for me, and I detailed that the first time I got one I passed out from the pain, and I think I have some form of medical PTSD from the experience. The doctor was dismissive and said any sort of numbing or local anesthesia was completely unnecessary.

I am very sensitive to pain, and I have been since I was young, I've always known this about myself. She kept reassuring me the cervical relaxers would be enough. I listened because she is a doctor and the first time I didn't even have relaxers given to me, but she was completely wrong, and I was crying and shaking and trying to keep my composure despite the pain when she clasped the cervix (you know, how they literally stab it to stabilize it), but at the removal it was so painful I screamed. At this point she should have offered some pain mediation, but instead she looked at me blankly and said "That wasn't even the worst part." Already it felt like I had been stabbed with a knife.

Of course the next insertion was so much worse that a nurse ran in to check on us. After, she said something about how the pain is mostly in my head as a fear response anyway. It absolutely was not. IUD insertion is the most painful thing I have experienced in my life, and yes I have broken a bone before. She also commented that she hopes I don't have more PTSD from this experience, as if she even attempted to help me through it in some way.

Anyway, I am learning German since I just moved here, but unfortunately I am not at the level yet where I can see a doctor in German. I have to get the IUD placement checked in 6 weeks, so I'd like to visit an alternative location to this one where they speak English.

The name of the practice was SihlGyn, I'd appreciate any alternative suggestions in the Zürich area. I know most doctors aren't taking new patients, and this place had great reviews but somehow it was still awful. I've never had an OBGYN that DOESNT dismiss my pain as if I'm faking it or some kind of baby that just needs to grow up.

lookingfor Alternative / rock / indie (even punk!) gig places

Grüezi mittenand! :)

I've been in Zürich for several months now, and the thing that I missed the most from my home town is concerts!

I'm not talking big concerts like Hallenstadion (even if I will go there next month!) but little gigs, made by amateurs or early pro bands

Do you have recommendation of places? Even if not exactly in Zürich. Also gig buddies, why not!

I mostly like alternative, rock, indie rock, punk rock is also fun, grunge.

(I love Muse, Arctic Monkeys, the White Stripes, Black Sabbath, Fontaines D.C. haha many stuff)

lookingfor IPA Plattformentwicklung HILFE!

Hallo zusammen.

ihaveaquestion Rhinefall Schaffhausen at night

Hello! I am new to Zurich, just started my masters at ETH. I opened a bank account at ZKB and I was told that I could travel anywhere in the canton of Zurich during Friday and Sat evenings from 1900hrs to 0500hrs.

So me and my friends are planning to go to Rhinefall Schaffhausen at night! I saw some images on Google that the lights are amazing during the night. Is it a good idea to go there during the night?

Also, what other places would y'all recommend to visit utilising the ZKB Nachtschwarmer?

lookingfor Does anyone have a Chameleon? Hobby Photographer Project

I grew up with those NatGeo photo series by Andrius Burba, where the animals are photographed from below on a glass plate and you can see the different kinds of ways they sit or stand on the glass - I always loved the Gecko one, where you can see the intricate feet of it

I would love to recreate that with amphibians or reptiles, and it would be great if the owner is experienced to handle their pet regarding calm placement and to assess when the time's up because the animal gets stressed - that part's super important to me, because just because this is a hobby, I don't want the animal to suffer!

If that's something you're interested in, I can offer in return nice high quality pictures of the result :D

Let me know if you are in Zurich city or Altstetten area

discussion My experience with the cantonal car inspection

Given that many people ask, I wanted to share so you know what to expect.

I received a letter this summer telling me to go at a time and date to the cantonal road office to have my car checked. Its a 2019 Volvo XC60, so it is 7 years old.

You can reschedule if you want.

Preparation: full car wash including undercarriage and rims. Check oil level, engine alarms, all lights, seatbelts, windshield wipers, OBD alarms, tire thread depth, tire pressure. chatGPT can give you a full checklist.

I have been doing all yearly services at a Volvo dealer every December.

The day of the appointment everything was very smooth, you just give them the car and go to waiting are from which you can watch. It’s a very standardized and detailed procedure, they do all sort of tests and bring it to a dark room to test the lights etc.

What was a bit annoying is the outcome. They can ask for some additional tests and you can do them only in a list of authorized shops, within 30 days.

They marked three things:

Brake disks thickness, asking to check with the manufacturer minimal thickness and replace if necessary. That is a bit silly because the thickness is checked every year at the service, I already had them replaced at 80000 km as expected. They are fine and I would have checked again in December. But authorized dealers ask for 150 chf to check.

Brake fluid pipe, because it was covered in dust so they could not check for cracks. It‘s a 7 year old car , never had to top up brake fluid. I am willing to bet that there are no cracks, and an authorized shop will charge 150 CHF to dust the pipe off.

Fog lights may be misaligned, check. This may be a good one. I had the front repaired at a Volvo dealer after a small accident a few weeks ago and they worked on the lights. It was covered by insurance, so I could go back there and tell them to do their job properly. Unfortunately, I need to do it at an authorized shop, and it will also cost 150 CHF at least.

Authorized shops also charge 100 CHF to communicate the positive result to the road office. And the road office charges 20 CHF to receive them.

TLDR: I am happy to know that cars on the road are inspected so carefully. I don’t like the idea to pay 650 CHF for nothing.

My advice is to schedule the yearly service before so that you can fix some small things before going there.

ihaveaquestion Exchange at ZHAW school of Business

Hey Zurich! I'm a Canadian university student looking to study abroad at ZHAW. I've been studying finance and management, and this would be my last semester in university, so I'm not extremely concerned about the course load and grades, but more about having a good time. Just wondering if anyone has any information on what it's like to study in the area and if it's a cool place to live. I've spent most of the free time I've had off school for the last 4 years backpacking around Europe, and I've conveniently left out Switzerland, I'd love to learn more about your beautiful country. Thanks!

discussion Städtische Wohnung: 30 applications, 3 viewings, 0 offers. Reality check & experiences?

• Upvotes

(Deutsch unten)

Hoi zäme,

I need a bit of a reality check (and maybe some emotional support) regarding the hunt for a Städtische Wohnung in Zurich. To give some context: I'm a Swiss citizen, grew up abroad, living in Zurich for about 2 years now, and actively looking since March.

So far, I have applied for around 30 municipal apartments (Liegenschaften Stadt Zürich). Out of these 30 applications, I was invited to 3 viewings, none of which resulted in a contract.

I know the housing market here is notoriously tough, but I’m curious about your experiences specifically with city apartments:

  1. If you have one, how long did it take you to finally get an offer for a Städtische Wohnung?
  2. Is a 1-in-10 viewing rate typical, and is the final selection purely a lottery once you get invited, or are there specific criteria that make or break an application?
  3. Any success stories, tips, or just comforting words to keep going?

Appreciate any insights or anecdotes!

(DE)

rant English please

I love the Alps, I love the quality of ingredients here, I love the general pleasantness of people, but if only everything were in English! Would be utopia.
