Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Everyday life What is the current situation in Blatten (VS) after the landslide?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I was planning some hikes on Strava and stumbled across Blatten. They have updated the map, and you can clearly see the devastation caused by the landslide.

Does anyone know what the current situation is? Are there plans to rebuild the village, or will it have to be relocated?

Other/Miscellaneous My neighbor screams at his gf/wife a lot and I am not sure if I should do something

I am not sure if this is the right place for this, but since I am living in Switzerland and want to know specifically how to deal with this situation here, I thought I will try.

Basically there is a couple living in the apartment above me (f26) and he screams at her regularly (things like „you are so fucking stupid“ or „you are such a dumb bitch“ etc.
She sometimes argues back, which just causes him to get louder. I am super unsure if there is something I could/should do? Try to catch her in the elevator and ask if she is alright? Ignore it? Is there anything else I could even do? Do police in Switzerland do Welfare checks or something like that? Is there a hotline that can be called? I am to scared to go up to the apartment myself.

I am not sure if he is doing anything else besides screaming at her, although last night their dog bark once and he yelled at him to „shut the fuck up“ and then I heard a crash, like something was thrown. I did not hear anything afterwards.

Maybe it’s not my place to be worried about this and I should just ignore it, but also, i do have a bad conscience about this.

Thank you for any help!

Everyday life Sunrise hiking

Hallo zäme,* *

We‘re looking to make a hike where we watch the sun rise, we chose Kanton Zug as some peaks show a full 360° panoramic view, maybe Gnipen.

However we’re open for suggestions and recommendations for a hike of approximately 1-2 hours, where we can enjoy the sun rise and view (any region)

Thank you in advance!

Travel Is St Gallen worth the trip...when the Abby is closed to the public?

I've got a day to play with from Munich and this may be my only chance to visit Switzerland. I don't mind long travel days.

While I would love to see the Abby, it appears that it's going to be closed to the public when I would be able to visit.

Are there other worthwhile spots to visit? Just a taste of the country is my hope.

Everyday life New Mom living in Solothurn and looking for English speaking people to connect with.

Hello everyone,

I am in search of people in Solothurn to connect with.
I moved to Switzerland around 3 years ago and chose Solothurn to settle in with my husband. I don’t know if it’s the same with everyone or it’s just me. I find socializing in Switzerland like starting watching a TV series from the middle.
Even though I am an introvert I tend to like socializing within small groups and living here I feel like I don’t have any social life at all. With having a baby and choosing to be a SAHM, I feels lonely sometimes.
I am looking for likeminded people to meet up and maybe become friends.

I love books, nature and learning about cultures. I like to go on picnics, have a cozy brunch or afternoon tea with friends. I am a great cook and love baking my own bread. I love to learn about plants and make herbal tea.
I am a literature and philosophy enthusiast. I love to play board games as much as video games.
Couples hang out is welcomed as my husband tho grew up in Switzerland he’s also new to Solothurn.

If anyone is interested to connect leave a comment or send me a direct message.

for everyone if you have any tips on how to navigate social life without alcohol in switzerland let me know in the comments.

Travel Help me take my gf on a trip of her dreams

Hi!! I'm taking my gf to Zurich for her birthday (we fly out tomorrow), and while I do have some things planned (Lindt, zoo, sightseeing), I wanted to ask you guys for recommendations.

My gf is very sportsy and she loooves bouldering - which I know nothing about - so I'd love to take her to a cool climbing gym. She's a 2d/3d concept artist and works in gamedev, maybe you know some places that might be fun for her? We're also looking for a nice date night restaurant option (no meat), I did some research but I'm really bad at the internet and get overwhelmed with info.

I was also wondering if there are any cool yarn stores/knitting related cafes or spots in Zurich, as I'm a big time knitter and spinner.

Thanks in advance!!

Other/Miscellaneous Prämienverbilligung and Naturalization

Is requesting Prämienverbilligung potentially a problem for future naturalization?

I'm an EU citizen living in Switzerland with a C permit. My understanding is that Prämienverbilligung is not social aid, but that, depending on the commune, having received it might be interpreted as weak economic independence. Do you have any experience about it?

Travel 3/4 hr hikes around Luzern with an (off-leash if possible) dog?

Hey all!

I'm in Luzern for a few days with a doggo that loves to hike. I'd like to do some hikes but am struggling to find info on safe hikes for her.

Ideally hikes without steep cliff faces etc. Of course I tried Googling but I feel like AI is just recommending random stuff without any actual info on the dog part. What would you recommend? I have a car so can travel anywhere.

I wouldn't mind something high in elevation or steep. Ideally looking for the most scenic routes. If it's over 4 hours thats fine too!

Edit;
Thank you for all the warnings on hunting season and the info on the rules about having the dog off leash. As I'm an outsider and not really sure of all of the regions I'll just keep my dog on leash :)

Everyday life Where on earth do you buy decent clothes and shoes? Is quality illegal in Switzerland or something?

Inspired by the recent discussion about travelling abroad to buy melatonin, I've got another question: where do you buy women's, men's and teenagers' clothes and shoes?

I seem to remember this topic coming up before, but I'm after actual recommendations, not another discussion about how dreadful shopping has become. Names, addresses, websites, insider tips , the lot. Secret passwords welcome! After shopping around Geneva and neighbouring France, I'm starting to suspect that decent-quality clothing has gone extinct.I'm not expecting cashmere for CHF 5 or Italian leather shoes for the price of a sandwich. I'm happy to pay for good materials and things that last. But why can I walk into some random shop in Italy, not a designer boutique, just somewhere selling cheap, mass-produced Chinese clothing , buy an inexpensive blouse that lasts for years, while here I struggle to find even that level of quality at ten times the price?Or why can I find a proper, thick, warm hoodie at C&A in Poland, while here everything seems to be made of suspiciously fluffy synthetic stuff that insulates about as well as a wet paper towel and looks like it's survived three wars after a few washes? Jeans? CHF 50 for something called "denim" that feels like cheap synthetic knickers from AliExpress — ten pairs for a franc, shipping included. I've had CHF 180 jeans from a local shop where the fabric itself started tearing after a year of occasional wear. Not the seams or high-friction areas — the actual fabric, which had become as fragile as Grandma's twenty-year-old floor rag. And raincoats that feel like supermarket carrier bags, but are priced as though NASA developed them, waterproofed them with unicorn tears and had Swiss engineers personally bless them. It's not just clothes, either. I've bought bedding made in Uzbekistan or Iran that seemed expensive at first but lasted for years. Meanwhile, CHF 100 linen bedsheets bought here can turn into pilling, scratchy sandpaper after two washes and wear through within a year. How?! What puzzles me most is that decent clothing and textiles clearly still exist in Italy, Poland, Turkey, China and elsewhere. Much of what's sold here comes from those very same countries.i'm looking for ordinary, decent-quality clothes at prices that make some sense: real denim, proper cotton, warm hoodies, coats that don't resemble bin bags, shoes that survive more than one season, and clothes that don't disintegrate if you look at them too aggressively.

Which brings me to my question: where do you buy clothes and shoes that are actually worth the money? Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Nauru, online shops, outlets, smaller brands- anywhere. Ideally, somewhere with a variety of styles, too, rather than whatever the fashion industry has decided we must all wear this season. Apparently, Grandma's old village dress in the latest "off to milk the cows" print is fashionable again, so naturally that's all the shops stock.

I'd especially appreciate recommendations based on things you've actually worn and washed, not just brands that look nice in the shop. Bonus points for decent teenagers' clothing! I just want reasonably good-quality clothes that don't cost as much as a Boeing aircraft. 😔 Has the plastic world finally won?

Everyday life What's with no tap water in Zurich restaurants?

I live in Geneva and every time I go to Zurich I get the same bad experience in different restaurants. I order food and wine and I will not be served tap water along with it.

Is that a Zurich thing or wider in Eastern Switzerland? How common is it elsewhere? I don't mind paying but for ecological reasons I will not get bottled water when there is a perfectly functional water system.

Travel Trying to find a Swiss engineer I met on a Peloponnese tour on 22 October 2025 (Bern/Interlaken)

This is a slightly unusual request, but I’m hoping someone here might recognise the story.

On 22 October 2025, I joined a small-group tour of the Peloponnese in Greece. During the drive, I spoke several times with a Swiss engineer about my PhD and what I hoped to do after completing it. He mentioned Bern and Interlaken during our conversation, which is why I’m posting here.

What he said stayed with me and had a lasting influence on the path I chose afterwards. I would very much like to find him again and thank him properly.

If this story sounds familiar, whether because you think you may be the person I met or because you might know him, please send me a private message or email me at:

mercuryzelda0121 (at) gmail (dot) com

I’m not asking anyone to give me his personal information. Simply forwarding this post to him would be more than enough.

Thank you for reading.

Travel Looking to rent a motorcycle to see the Alps. Want to make sure I’m doing the correct things

Hi all so I’ll be in Switzerland for two days next year and want to spend a chunk of it on a bike riding through the Alps. As someone from the US, what can I not miss in terms of paperwork or just bureaucracy to make this happen! I’m getting the international drivers license, but If there’s a more narrow subreddit I’m happy to take my questions over there.

This salmon seems very popular in Norway. As someone living in Lausanne and traveling to Geneva often, I wonder if I can buy them at a coop/Migros store.
Thank you very much!

Work 3 years in Switzerland, got another absage today. just need to vent

Sorry it’s long, I just need to get this off my chest.

I’ve been in Switzerland for about 3 years. Life kind of threw me here. I had around 2 years of IT experience back home. When I got here I quickly realized nothing happens without German, so I sat down and got my C1. I applied everywhere, not just IT. McDonald’s, Aushilfe jobs, you name it. All rejections.

Then I thought ok, let me do a Lehre so I at least have something recognized here. Probably because I’m over 30, I didn’t even get invited to a single interview.

So I applied to a FH and got in. Been studying Informatik for over a year now and it’s honestly going fine, but the theory is killing me and I have no idea if I’ll even find a job when I’m done. While studying I applied for hourly jobs too. Once I was literally the only candidate, the interview went well, still got rejected.

Then I had an idea. I have a cyber security background, did CTFs and some bug bounty. Maybe if I actually prove what I can do, a door opens. So I started looking at Swiss companies with bug bounty programs. Found a 10/10 critical vuln at a public institution everyone here knows. Reported it through their program, informed the right people and applied to a job in my field there. Rejected without even an interview.

Same thing happened with 4 more companies. Rejection, then a thank you email. One guy I reported a finding to actually wrote “people who look at things the way you do are rare these days”. I swallowed my pride and replied “I already applied to your open position, happy to meet if you invite me”. Silence.

Most recently I found a shortened Lehre posting in exactly the field I want to learn. Didn’t have much hope but applied anyway, got a rejection mail a few days later. 10 days after that they called me: “sorry, that rejection was sent by mistake, want to come for an interview?” Went in, it went great, we laughed, they showed me the program. I really thought this is it.

Absage.

I asked why. They said the program is intense and my German is not good enough. I’m studying Informatik 100% in German at a FH and I’m almost halfway through. The Lehre was in Informatik too. I honestly can’t wrap my head around it.

This is the third time in my life I had to rebuild everything from zero, and this time I’m stuck at the same point for years. Nothing was as hard as finding a place in this country. Not status, just a place in society.

Anyone else been through something like this? How did you get out of it?

EDIT: wow didnt expect this many replies. thanks everyone, even the harsh ones. Im reading everything but cant answer all of them. your support really took some of the sting out of this last absage. gonna keep trying

Everyday life Dentist in Switzerland or Germany in 2026?

I recently returned to Switzerland and look for a dentist. I remember that 5 years ago, people went to Dentists across the border as the prices were cheaper. However, as Germany has been hit with inflation I am wondering if it is still worth it to go to Germany or not?

For reference: I live in Canton Zurich and Jestetten could be an option.

Study Is racism in swiss that bad?

Hi!! I’m thinking of taking my phd in Switzerland, but i’ve been seeing a lot of posts recently talking about people experiencing racism there

For context, i am portuguese and chinese mixed, grew up in a portuguese environment (school, friends, household), originally from Macau and went to Portugal for my bachelor and master but i look pretty asian. I’ve been to swiss when i was little so i don’t remember much.

Switzerland is really good when it comes to research and the field i am interested in, hence i was planning to take my phd there, but I’ve been seeing a lot of racism posts and people talking about experiencing racism, and i wanted to know if it’s really that bad?

And/Or any tips or suggestions you guys might have

Thank you🙏🏻

Ps: I’m so sorry for calling it Swiss, ik it’s Switzerland, just thought swiss is also used to talk about the country, im sorryy if it offended anyone 🙏🏻
