Nothing hurts me more than finding a webtoon with a genuinely unique and interesting premise, getting attached to the characters, and then watching it either get abandoned or rushed to an ending.
Like, I genuinely get that authors are human beings with lives outside of their comics. Burnout is real, life happens, and nobody owes us their health or wellbeing just to keep a webtoon going. I'm not talking about authors who communicate that they're struggling or need to stop. I'm talking about the specific pain of being left with a story you loved that just... stops existing. Or when a comic with SO MUCH potential gets cut short AND SOMETIMES THE WORST PART IS THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN REREAD IT BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING TO REREAD ANYMORE.
Anyway, here are some webtoons I still think about because I am clearly incapable of moving on.
MY LUCKY STRIKE:
I MISS YOU SO BADLY😭😭
I genuinely loved this webtoon man 😭. There was something so lovable and refreshing about it I don't even know how to explain it properly. Even the art had so much charm. This might sound weird, but I LOVED the way the characters' lips were drawn. They looked so plump and luscious, and I especially loved how the artist drew Siru, the fmc. I was OBSESSED with her she was my pfp for weeks.
And speaking of Siru, MY GOAT, SHE WAS SUCH A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. She wasn't your usual meek, shy, quiet female lead who spends the entire story blushing and stammering around a man. SHE HAD A PERSONALITY!! She was confident, stood up for other people, and wasn't afraid to speak her mind when it mattered. AND SHE WAS TALL!!! WEBTOONS, PLEASE, I AM BEGGING YOU TO LET WOMEN BE TALL. Why is the woman always approximately the height of the man's rib cage?😭 It's okay for women to be tall. I promise.
I also loved how she wasn't particularly feminine and had a more masculine style while still being SO CUTE. Like, can we get some appreciation for female characters who don't conform to conventional femininity but are still cute and considered attractive, and give them romantic storylines???
We barely get tomboy representation anymore (do people even still use the word tomboy?). And I don't just mean a conventionally pretty girl wearing oversized hoodies and sneakers before getting a makeover that makes her more feminine. I mean girls who are naturally more masculine in their presentation and don't need to change who they are to be considered lovable. I wanted to see more of Siru, especially her college life and relationship with Cheong. WE WERE ROBBED. AND THERE WAS BLASIAN REPRESENTATION. DO YOU KNOW HOW RARE THAT IS IN MANHWAS??? HECK, IN GENERAL???
What happened to this story was so frustrating. From what I remember, the author received a lot of harassment from readers because of the barely noticeable art style change, which made the author change the story's direction towards the end because they just wanted to end it and get it over with. I really hope the author is doing better now, because the hate they received was so undeserved.
Cheong's sister is where I started losing my mind. She initially felt like a realistic source of conflict, but then she became SO cartoonishly evil that I couldn't take her seriously anymore. WHY ARE WE GETTING ATTEMPTED MURDER IN MY ROMANCE/S-O-L WEBTOON??? Why is she trying to kill Siru's brother??? And then Cheong's grandmother(?) actually dies??? HELLO?? This was supposed to be a romance/slice-of-life story with some drama, so why did we suddenly enter a family crime thriller? 😭
And Siru barely seemed to react to some of the absolutely INSANE things happening around her. The consequences of the sister's actions felt rushed or brushed aside, and I was left wondering how we got here.
Gibaek was weird and annoying, but he was also a genuinely interesting character, so I was disappointed when he basically disappeared after season one. I can understand why his role changed, but I still wish we'd gotten more from him.
AND THE WORST PART? WE NEVER REALLY GOT TO SEE SIRU AND CHEONG NAVIGATE COLLEGE LIFE AS A COUPLE. THAT WAS WHAT I WAS HERE FOR!!! I wanted to see their relationship develop and their everyday interactions, their dynamic as an actual couple. Instead, Cheong's sister took over the story, and by the time we reached the ending, everything felt so rushed.
I genuinely wish the author had been able to stick closer to the original slice-of-life/realistic drama direction instead of escalating everything to such an absurd degree. It had a special charm that I haven't really found elsewhere.
CANDID HEARTS:
This one hurts for a different reason because it only got around 25 chapters, and I feel like we barely got the chance to settle into its world. The premise was interesting, the cast was diverse, and I wanted to spend more time with these characters. It felt like there was so much room for the universe to expand and for the relationships to develop.
That said, I don't blame the author for what happened. From what I remember, she had major life changes going on, including a pregnancy and a move abroad, so she had legitimate reasons to step away. And at least she communicated what the ending would've been!
I'm still sad we never got to experience the full story, but I'd rather have an author take care of themselves than force themselves to keep creating. Sometimes life really does get in the way, and that's nobody's fault. I'm just mourning the potential. 🥲
MATCHMAKER HERO:
MY LOVE. MY BELOVED. WHY DID YOU END LIKE THAT???
This webtoon was SO FUNNY. Like, genuinely funny, not just the usual slapstick webtoon humour where everyone makes an exaggerated face or falls over. The premise was unique, the characters were entertaining, and I was actually invested in where the story was going. And then the ending felt so rushed and cliffhangery, giving you the implication that there was gonna be a second season only to find out that...wasn't the case. Like I remember the first time I finished it, I just sat there like... THAT'S IT??? WE'RE DONE???
I feel like this comic had so much more to give. I still think about it because I haven't found many webtoons that scratch quite the same itch. We really lost a good one.
LOVE ME KNOT:
The plot WAS interesting. Keyword: WAS. The whole strings concept had so much potential, and I was genuinely curious about where the story would take it. But somewhere along the way, it started feeling like the supernatural premise was taking a backseat to endless fluff.
And look, I like fluff. I'm not allergic to cute couples having cute moments. Noah and Avery are adorable, and I enjoy them together. But I need something else to happen, please. 😭 You introduced this intriguing concept and made me curious about the implications, only to give me a story that increasingly feels like it's coasting on the romance. I still enjoy it, but I can't help feeling like the original premise deserved more.
EATERNAL NOCTURNAL
This one is complicated because I love Instantmiso, and I don't think this is a case of an author abandoning a comic or being forced to cut it short. The author did bring the story to an ending on her own terms. But I genuinely think this story could have been SO MUCH MORE interesting than what we got.
The premise is incredibly unique. A supernatural story involving dreams, insomnia, and the relationship between Eve and Dae? There was so much potential to explore those ideas in depth, but instead, I feel like the story gradually shifted from an interesting supernatural story WITH a romance subplot into a romance story where the supernatural elements took a backseat.
And Eve and Dae fell for each other and got together SO QUICKLY. I wanted more time for their relationship to develop naturally, especially when the premise gave them so many interesting obstacles to navigate. This is the kind of story that deserved a juicy slow burn. It would've made the experience so much richer watching Dae slowly fall for Eve and have the guilt eat him up inside, and same with Eve falling for Dae but also feeling confused and conflicted because he and her dream guy(lmao) feel so familiar. Sigh.
I also think the characters' personal lives could have been explored more. Dae's relationships with his mother, father, and brother could have added so much depth to his character. Eve's insomnia was such a significant part of her character and the story's premise, but I wanted more exploration of why she experienced it and what it meant for her beyond being a plot device that connected her to Dae.
Cherri's role as a sort of antagonist also felt rushed, and the blond music/vocal coach villain was pretty one-note. I wanted more complexity from the antagonists and more time to understand their motivations. And everyone forgave each other SO QUICKLY. It felt like we went from conflict to reconciliation to happily-ever-after without enough time for the emotional consequences to actually land.
I don't want to sound ungrateful because the comic still had plenty to enjoy, and the miso was entitled to end it whenever she wanted. But I couldn't shake the feeling that the ending was too neat and generic for such an interesting premise.
Maybe I'm just greedy, but I wanted more supernatural mystery and more time for the emotional arcs to breathe. This story had so many ingredients for something special, and I wish more of them had been explored.
RENEGADE:
I LITERALLY WANT TO BAWL MY EYES OUT EVERY TIME I THINK ABOUT THIS WEBTOON. NOTHING HITS THE SAME. I WILL NEVER MOVE ON. 😭😭😭
This one was SO GOOD. And what I loved most was how REALISTIC it felt. The characters actually felt like people who could exist in real life. Even the art contributed to that feeling. They didn't all look like perfectly polished, conventionally attractive webtoon characters; there was something grounded about their appearances and expressions that made them feel real. And the main character??? OH MY GOD.
I love when an author isn't afraid to make their protagonist genuinely unlikeable. This man was INSUFFERABLE. He could be so frustrating that I wanted to shake him through the screen, but I also couldn't help feeling sorry for him because the people who were supposed to care about him often treated him terribly. He was an asshole, but he wasn't an asshole who magically got away with everything. His own behaviour had consequences, life kept handing him problems, and even when he meant well, he often managed to say or do the wrong thing which made him feel so human.
That kind of character is SO much more interesting to me than a protagonist who is endlessly sympathetic and always morally correct. I developed a genuine love-hate relationship with him. I hated him. I pitied him. I was begging him to get his life together. I also hated that I found him hot. Unfortunately, I contain multitudes.
And then I went looking for the author's socials and discovered that they'd apparently moved on to making Genshin fanart.
Genshin. Fanart.
GENSHIN.
FANART.
...
I've hated Genshin ever since. (I'm joking. Mostly.)
MELLOW NOVA:
THIS ONE MAKES ME SO ANGRY BECAUSE I CAN'T EVEN REREAD IT.
From what I remember, the author returned after a long hiatus and announced that they wanted to revamp or redo the entire story. So the existing episodes were deleted, and I thought, okay! A fresh start! Maybe the story will come back even better!
AND THEN NOTHING.
It's been FIVE YEARS. If you go to the Webtoon page, there's basically nothing left except the few episodes explaining the break and the plan to redo the story. SO I CAN'T EVEN GO BACK AND READ THE OLD VERSION WHILE WAITING FOR THE NEW ONE.
The characters were hilarious, the art was gorgeous, and I loved the comic so much. It had such a distinctive charm, and now it's just... gone. At this point, I've accepted that it might never return, but I'm STILL SAD. I just want to reread it one more time. PLEASE.
VERSION DAY AND NIGHT:
ANOTHER ONE THAT JUST VANISHED INTO THE VOID.
This was another genuinely hilarious webtoon, and I'm honestly worried about the author because there doesn't even seem to be a proper hiatus announcement explaining what's happening. It just stopped updating.
It's been SIX YEARS. SIX.
Does anyone know if the author is okay? Has there been any news? Because I genuinely hope they're doing well, even if the comic never comes back. I'm not even necessarily asking for a continuation at this point. I just hope nothing bad has happened to them, and I'd love to know if there's any information about what happened to the series.
Just found out it's marked as completed now.....
OH MY INTERN:
THE ONE TIME. THE ONE TIME I FIND A WEBTOON WITH MY REPRESENTATION, AND IT GETS DROPPED LIKE A HOT POTATO.
This comic was belly-laughing funny bro. Can you tell I have a thing for funny webtoons?😭
The MC was hilarious and relatable, the story was quirky and unconventional, and somehow it still managed to make sense. It had such a distinct voice, and I was genuinely excited to see where it would go.
Apparently, the author has a reputation for moving on from one webtoon to another without finishing the previous one. I don't know the full circumstances behind every series, so I'm not going to pretend I know exactly why this one stopped. But MAN, it is frustrating when you find a story that feels so different from everything else, only for it to disappear before you can see what it was building towards.
Anyway, I still reread a lot of these whenever I want to feel something, which is basically the webtoon equivalent of repeatedly reopening an old wound. I know authors don't owe readers endless updates, and I would NEVER want someone to sacrifice their health or personal life for a comic. Sometimes stories end because of circumstances outside anyone's control, and sometimes an author simply wants to move on.
But I wish more of these stories could have had the chance to reach their full potential. I miss the characters, the humour, the art, the weird little details that made each one feel different from the hundreds of other comics out there.
And that's what makes it hurt so much. It's not just that a story ended. It's that I can see all the different directions it could have gone in, all the character development I wanted to see, all the unanswered questions, and all the possibilities that will probably never happen.
Does anyone else have a webtoon they still mourn because it had a unique premise or amazing characters but never got the ending or development it deserved?
PLEASE tell me I'm not the only one who still thinks about these comics years later...
