Discussion Still the biggest webtoon tragedy 🥀
I really really loved this webtoon! I was disappointed when the author quit ☹️ I was hoping that maybe it'll come back but it's been years now. And when the author gave a major plot spoiler I knew it was never coming back. Such a missed opportunity!
22
u/missmaniax 4h ago
I remember reading this not knowing it doesn't get continued. When I finished it and went looking for when the new chapter might come out and realized that it probably will never get continued, I was so fucking sad and disappointed.
It was genuinely one the best Webtoons that I've ever read. The whole story concept was so trhilling and the character dynamics so well made. Such a shame the author felt the need to quit.
Also yes, the plot spoiler made my jaw drop!! So cool! But it made me even more sad that we will never know how this plot unwraps in the story😔

If stopping on this series led to “My Boss Doesn’t Have a Face,” then I’m glad lol.. as much as I enjoyed this story, no artist should have to endure harassment from online trolls/fanatics. That said, it is a shame this story will likely never be truly completed. I hope she at least finishes My Boss Doesn’t Have a Face “ because it is such an enjoyable light story

u/NyxenShadow 4h ago
Wait whatttt !!! Could you share the major plot spoiler plzzzzzzzz ??!?!?!!? Cz I think I was living in a cave for not hearing abt it

u/missmaniax 4h ago
As far as I understood the 2 main characters Adam and Rozy are supposed to be siblings. While Adam is fully aware of it and apparently knows that the entire time, Rozy doesn't know a thing about their relationship. I think the author was extremely frustrated about fans shipping these 2 characters because their relationship wasn't meant to be romanticized.
57
u/Illustrious_Oil_2114 3h ago
Well, the author got harassed because they wouldn’t be in a relationship. Pretty sure she got death threats.

17
u/Lilacsandposies 3h ago
Kinda funny, given the cover art. I wouldn't go into looking for incest romance, but I've read worse. Granted, I've never read this comic, but it's possible the author just didn't know how to go a platonic route that made sense to readers. It shouldn't be that hard though.
37
u/ZipZapZia 3h ago
The audience didn't know they were siblings. They were just shipping what they thought were two unrelated characters. That siblings part was supposed to be a surprise reveal/twist at the end of the series. The author just got mad that people were shipping them and cancelled the series and dropped the fact that they were meant to be siblings after they cancelled it
5
u/izzynskii 1h ago
It’s actually crazy because anyone with a developed brain and who can read never read this as a romance and definitely would not ship the two. There was maybe a quick moment right at the beginning, but no.

u/FictionalContext 4h ago
At the end of the story, he visits a skyscaper. The camera zooms out, and it's the World Trade Center, 8/11/01. So nothing happens, and he spends the rest of his life telling everybody about how he was there one month before the tragedy until they're so sick of that story, he ends up alone. The second to last panel shows him standing atop the World Trade Center memorial, right at the precipice of the fountains, then he takes a step, which I assume hurt quite a bit because it's at least a 10 foot drop but the comic leaves his fate ambiguous.

Hanza was unprofessional and extremely immature.
She always make the paid reader pay the price of her tantrum.
If you follow her from her prev work (before the guy upstair), you will know this was not the first time she throw a tantrum and somehow punish the legal reader for something that she finds annoying.
The guy upstair debacle was much more unhinged.
People make a ship that she find distasteful.
Then literally axed the series because of it.
She complain about people didnt pay for her webtoon in her prev work. (Pirate)
Now people paid for it.
Spoil a massive plot twist via social media because she find a ship distasteful.
People got angry, some unhinged people sent her dead threat.
Now punish everyone (including loyal readers who always paid for the comic) by axing the series.
I will never read her work ever again no matter how good it is.
Add: when she work in "my deepest secret", once she also threaten to axed the series because people pirated the series.... like what? So... punish your loyal paid reader for it ?? Lol.
16
u/sinfulvmp 37m ago
Literally, she's insane and people still defend her. Like, throwing away a series that was well loved and supported by most of the readers because.. they liked a ship before knowing the plot twist? That they had no business expecting cuz it's a plot twist?lol
Some authors should really just focus on their story and not interact with the community and throw tantrums.

u/deredere-darling 48m ago
Idk why it was such a surprise that people would ship them considering the authors last story was shown to be a male Yandere story 😭😭 like wow people are shipping my main characters!? How could they!?
11
u/softmarshmellow_ 4h ago
Nooo. I purposefully marinate this for so long, just to learn tht it got axed😭😭😭. Why tho
31
u/PresentFirm5576 3h ago
On websites it was being labled as romance when there was none. Plus the two leads were being shipped together when they were in fact siblings.
20
u/ShadowlightLady 3h ago edited 3h ago
I don’t think people knew they were siblings (still people shipping her with a serial killer is messed up)
27
u/PresentFirm5576 3h ago
They didn't at all. There was no big hints about it. I think they looked alike due to hair or eye color I think it was for me but shrugged it off thinking it was an limited colors thing.

I know there’s some serial killer ships like yanderay “i can change you things” so I wouldn’t mind if they weren’t siblings and it was written good but the issue was that she was harassed like death lthreat over it, when she didn’t feel comfortable doing

This whole situation was lowkey kinda funny. Cause what do you mean the author axed it cause her fans were getting in the way of her plot twist
24
u/Ok_Low_2302 2h ago
She was getting death threats and some crazy fans were contacting her family I think - or found out her address. It got pretty dangerous, so her cancelling it was not just cause people ruined her plot twist nor was it funny.

She mentioned it on the Webtoon app, it was on her message board for awhile. Idk if it was on twitter I didn’t follow her on there nor use twitter. It was a long time ago so I can’t recall everything but I specifically remmeber her being upset because she said she got death threats and her family was getting mail or messages.
6
u/Last_Ninja1572 1h ago
It was on twitter, I was following her and reading along when the whole thing happened.
If I am going to be honest, this is why you don't interact with fans or have a full blown conversation with them because it often leads to fans demanding stuff, which causes you to be disinterested in your story.
4
u/Ok_Low_2302 1h ago
I don’t have twitter. It was definitely on the Webtoon app what I saw. It was like on her profile page. I tried to look back but there isn’t anything before my boss doesn’t have a face so she might’ve deleted it.

Yep, just look at kei urana the author of gachiakuta.
Author who cant control themselve in social media will just make them look unprofesional no matter if they are in the right or not.

what happened w gachiakuta?

u/Live_Juggernaut4984 47m ago
Some of the very loud fanbase of her work tried to label her for something that she wasnt.
Like a lesbian, a trans or something else.
She corrected and said she isnt.
The fanbase than tried to said some of the character are trans.
She said no they arent.
The fanbase accuse her of being racist.
She like and share a low budget cosplay meme.
The fanbase explode and said she mock black people and a racist.
the fanbase now attacking everyone involving with the work.

Yeah, when she work for "my deepest secret".
She also threaten to axe the series because she find out people pirate her webtoon....like what?
Why always punish your loyal legal reader for something that nobody can control.

she seem unprofessional

Yeah thats why a lot of people now avoid her work like a plague.
Reading her work only each time reminded that she will axed the series when she find a little bit annoyance.

u/Toleniam 4h ago
Wait, I literally just binged it a few weeks ago, I didn’t know the author has basically completely given up?!?!
3
u/Horror-Willow695 3h ago
Exactly, did she really give it up? Because I finished it thinking there was maybe another season.
12
u/Illustrious_Oil_2114 3h ago
She didn’t give up she got death threats because she didn’t make two characters a couple, so she was scared to pick up the pencil
5

u/Toleniam 5m ago
Meant to say “given up on it”. Which I guess still isn’t what happened.
I knew she was ‘taking a break’ because of deranged shippers, but I thought it was a step-back for the sake of mental health situation, not a step-back for the sake of personal safety situation.
Wtaf. I genuinely hope these readers who refuse to see these writers as human beings, not just sources of entertainment, get what’s coming to them. Damn, I don’t even know what to hope for Hanza… that she’s fine? That she gets better? That she doesn’t start hating posting? That these parasites leave her alone?
Poor Hanza…

SUCH a good Webtoon and I loved Hanzas other thriller. I’m so annoyed at the freaking crazy people who ruined it.

Didn't author basically spoil their own story on social media just because people were doing a ship they don't like?

People also didnt know the mc and villain are siblings.... it wasnt even revealed yet at that time.

Wasnt it more that people were sending and tagging them in the fanart after explicitly being told they didnt like the ship? Like Hanza absolutely did not like the ship, but from what I understand, they seemed fine to tolerate its existence until it started getting shoved down their throat and people got on their case in comments and DMs for openly criticizing it?
-13
u/No-Sale3237 2h ago
When they were explaining that the shippers were spamming them, I thought that while it sucks to have that happen, there are ways to circumvent that. The biggest of which is to take a break from the internet and recharge. Then they axed the story by revealing the big plot twist which screwed not just the shippers, but innocent people like all of us who just wanted to enjoy the story. I read a lot of bl manhwas, Jinx being a top one for me. The amount of hate that story got over the years was absolutely insane and unwarranted, but Mingwa never once pulled a stunt like this. The artist for this story could've had the same mindset she does. The only thing I can't say in Hanza's defense is that the death threats are highly inappropriate and unjustified. The internet is going to internet though. You can't control the unhinged fans, only how you react to their insane behavior. However ruining the story for innocent readers is also a really scummy thing to do and she should definitely never make a webtoon again.
20
u/Ok_Low_2302 2h ago
Excusing death threats with ‘the internet is going to internet’ and blaming the author for not wanting to tolerate that is crazy work.
She did the right thing IMO, because the best way to shut that shit down is not to feed it. I’m pretty sure some of them even got her addres or families address or something.
-8
u/No-Sale3237 2h ago
Or you know, you could read the part where I explicitly said death threats are highly inappropriate and unjustified. I get there's a typo from autocorrect making my "the only thing I can't say" into can't for some reason, but my point was that while I don't condone death threats, there is literally nothing you can do to stop them apart from getting off the internet. But to react by punishing the vast majority of the sane readers and axing the story, especially the way they did, makes them a terrible person who shouldn't be making webtoons.
5
u/Kind_Negotiation_982 2h ago
Think its more to do with your language. You did objectively say "the internet is going to internet", so "I also said it was unjustified" doesnt really mean much. "Inappropriate" and "unjustified" are also a lot softer words than calling someone just a full stop horrible person for...axing a story. Don't get me wrong, I liked it too, I wish it wouldve continued. But Im never going to not consider the asshole idiots responsible for it getting tanked, nor am I ever not going to consider them worse than Hanza, who only axed a story.

u/No-Sale3237 1h ago
Responding to myself bc Kind_Negotiation_982 deleted their comment for some reason, but might see this.
So I'll repeat the context one more time and then in done defending myself from people who are actively trying to find a problem with what I'm saying by misinterpreting it:
You want to talk about me using "objective speech", but fail to mention I objectively condemned death threats when I prefaced my comment with saying they are absolutely unwarranted and unjustified. I specifically did this bc as you said, I did say the internet is going to internet. This doesn't apply just to death threats. This is a statement that means that you can't control what happens on the internet. This is why your "boys will be boys" comparison falls flat on its face. As I said, children are under the care of their parents who can control and teach them to do better. That's why the statement is invalid for boys, but not for the internet. This isn't me condoning death threats. This is me saying you literally can't stop them from happening. Which is why I also suggested Hanza should'vd taken a break from the internet to recharge, but if you acknowledge that I can't be the villain you want me to be.
I never once said Hanza is just as bad as the crazy shippers. I merely said what they did was absolutely terrible and what Hanza did was also terrible. I can acknowledge that both parties did horrible things. And Hanza didn't just axe the story, they spoiled the biggest plot device that was driving the story while we were all unaware. Axing the story would've been them telling us that the story was on an indefinite hiatus and likely not coming back. They went the extra mile to give a middle finger to the shippers with that massive spoiler that also friendly fired to readers like you and me. If that's the kind of creator they are, they don't need to be in the space bc now we know what they'll do in a situation like this. Hanza was a victim of the shippers but a perpetrator to the innocent readers.
9
u/Kind_Negotiation_982 2h ago
This feels like the slippery slope of "boys will be boys" lowkey 😒 Or "if you didnt want it stolen you shouldn't have posted your art". Instead of holding the people objectively acting out of turn accountable, youre placing the responsibility and blame on the one being targeted simply because youre used to that behavior and therefore assume others should be as well.
-6
u/No-Sale3237 2h ago
Completely different concept. Parents can control their children and teach them better. Pray tell how you would stop death threats on the internet? How would you stop any bad thing on the internet from happening?
6
u/Kind_Negotiation_982 2h ago
I feel you've never been around children if you truly think you can stop them from doing everything and anything. If that were the case there wouldnt be kids continually trying to run into the street. Also "boys will be boys" doesnt only apply to literal boys. Its been used for teenagers, college students, and adults just as much.
That aside however, the ability to stop them (or lack thereof) doesnt mean the target of their behavior is suddenly more responsible for what happens. I certainly cant stop shitty government officials from fucking up my day-to-day so long as theyre in office (and sometimes even after, depending on what they do). I certainly cant stop people from stealing my art (nor can any artist). That doesnt suddenly make anyone more at fault or the bearer of responsibility over the perpetrators though. The idea that because you cant do anything, youre suddenly more on the hook than the people actually doing the thing is asinine.

u/No_Bee7498 2h ago edited 1h ago
Imo I think they want a reason to stop making the webtoon so they took this chance to get the f out💀 I still can't believe that the author thought that every person out there know the untold story about the fl & ml. I feel like the whole ship thing was werid but not everyone knews about the real truth like the author didn't get to that plot twist in the story. Now you're telling me you will stop because actually they both are family? Yeah this is ridiculous. Either way it's their decision and what people have done is wild. But we can't forget that we got robbed.
Edit: I said in my opinion y'all plz don't be upset 😭

Seee? Thank you for understanding. Also I said in my opinion idk why ppl think I'm hating I love the story & the art. Either way we will never get to know anything about the story.
-1
u/No-Sale3237 1h ago
I will say I'm a bit harsher with Hanza on this bc as I said the death threats from shippers is inexcusable and abhorrent, but killing the story the way they did wasn't just a slap in the face to those horrible people. It also spat in all of our faces. If they did thay to ultimately get away from webtoon, that seems like a huge gamble on their contract. I'm glad webtoon isn't taking legal action against Hanza, assuming they could for that huge spoiler, but I feel the same now as I did then: let's never meet again Hanza. You pretty much embody most of what I said though. I just think we can acknowledge that the death threat shippers are disgusting people while also coming to grips with the reality that the way Hanza handled it was also a terrible way to go about it. They hurt Hanza and Hanza hurt us. I'm allowed to express my anger on that while also saying they didn't deserve what happened to them.
8
u/_Kia_Wolfy 2h ago
Im sick and tired of ppl saying Hanza is being unprofessional and too sensitive. It's her work, no matter how much you love it, at the end of the day it's HER ARTWORK. "It's just a ship, she's being overdramatic and selfish." Ppl who whine and complain abt how she didn't just bow and follow everything the fans want us the selfish one. Some readers are too entitled to the story that when it start ruining the story they blame the author for it.
7
u/Huntress08 49m ago
I do not understand this line of argument or the thought process that what Hanza did wasn't unprofessional in any way, shape, or form.
This series, at the time, was her job that she was contractually obligated to work on. Artists/creators can back away from work for any number of reasons (getting sick, burnout, bereavement leave, etc) but you can't just wake up one day and decide that because you dislike the fandom, for any number of reasons, that you're going to not fulfill the terms of your contract.
Not only is that unprofessional but that's not an adult way to handle things.
If she wanted out from the project there are better and more professional ways she could have approached it. This is a professional burning of an entire bridge and opportunities that I would be shocked if Webtoon would ever consider pitching her another contract to do an original again or any other entity offering her professional work that would require her signing a new contract.

u/deredere-darling 11m ago
Exactly like didn’t people pay money to read future chapters and stuff? They expect her to actually make them! As they should! People say that authors don’t owe audiences but audiences shouldn’t also owe authors
5
u/onlyifitwasyou 2h ago
The one thing about this author I can understand is their decision. I would’ve done the exact same thing if I was in their boat. I don’t envy people who deal with what this author dealt with.
5
u/tenkohime 3h ago
The creator kept getting sent incest smut of her own characters. I would drop it too if it happened to me.
25
u/mamaguebo69 3h ago
People didnt even know they were siblings until the author spoiled it.
16
u/chipsahoycoochie 3h ago
Yeah I think people are a bit unfair about her fans thinking it’d become a dark romance. There was legit no way of knowing or thinking they were siblings. Hanza tends to be very reactive in general so I wasn’t shocked when she dropped the whole project over shipping
17
u/CookieCacti 3h ago
Also her previous series (My Deepest Secret) was specifically about a woman dating a secret serial killer. This one has a very similar premise, albeit with a non-protagonist character dating the (presumed) killer. Based on her previous work, I wouldn’t blame the audience for expecting a similar dark romance relationship to occur since the author is known for those kinds of premises.
At the end of the day, the author should do whatever she’s comfortable with. But it is a little strange to feel upset over fanwork depicting the two characters in a romantic relationship when her previous work was about that very same dynamic and there was no indication the two were siblings in the story yet.

I've literally stopped reading webtoons unless they're 100% complete. I've been burned way too many times.
