Discussion Never Enjoyed VR so much

Starwars Galactic Racer out with a mod, GTA Enchanced with an updated mod with ray tracing, Titan fall, Metro Exodus upcoming +many many more. I'm in Heaven. Haven't enjoyed VR this much ever. Playing MSFS with max settings in VR thanks to OFXR. Dream come true. Literally can't decide half the time what I want to play more now... Hopefully 5090 doesn't catch on fire, been riding her ass hard with all this.

What are you guys enjoying most lately?!

Self-Promotion (Developer) you can now fish in VR and still watch your actual TV

Hey, I work on Real VR Fishing for Quest.

Last holiday we threw in a mixed reality mode as kind of a test, not really expecting much. People ended up liking it a lot more than we thought, so we decided to make it a permanent feature.

While we were at it, we added room scanning. You scan your room and pick which parts become the fishing spot, and everything else stays as your real room. So you can leave your TV visible with the game on and fish in the rest of the space. Honestly that’s how a lot of us play anyway lol.

It’s in the base game, so if you’re on Horizon+ you can just jump in and try it.

Curious what you guys think, or what else you’d want to keep visible while fishing.

Discussion Could COD 2003 in VR be a possibility now, with REA and vibe coding?

I’m dreaming of the day when it becomes possible to play the original 2003 *Call of Duty* (along with its expansion) and *Call of Duty 2* in VR.

This game defined my childhood, and its immersion in the WWII setting is incredible.

It’s like being inside *Band of Brothers*.

Even though the game runs on the Quake engine, it’s a modified version, and the source code isn’t open source :(

But now, with "Vibe coding" and that new REA repository that’s been gaining traction, I see a light at the end of the tunnel <3

Discussion VR Mod for Path of Titans

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here are instructions for how to get it going:

https://github.com/cybershrimp23/PathOfTitans_UEVR

This is pretty early on! I wanted to see if the game play would work in VR and it does!

This is not for VR players who still haven't gotten their sea-legs! It's a third person dinosaur survival game so the camera movement is a bit different than traditional VR games.

Because of the way the game works snap-to-turn doesn't really make sense. Your camera angle relative to your dinosaur determines where it bites, so snap to turn would leave you with limited attack capabilities.

It really changes the game dynamics making it easier to see other characters in the game, this is partially because when you maneuver your camera above your dinosaur it still maintains your headset angle (otherwise it would feel aweful), giving you a better view - but I also feel like binocular vision really lets you scan the environment in a way that is hard to do in a flat screen mode; it's almost like it speaks to something we're evolved to do - scan for hunting opportunities.

I was surprised by this but, that was one of the first things I noticed.

Also the new camera dynamics might have changed the fighting dynamics a bit, I haven't played this game enough to know, but it seems like it has - but more experienced players would have to play it to confirm; alternatively it might just turn out I'm a terrible dinosaur.

The game has huge maps which are really amazing and feel very expansive - which is why I wanted to try this in VR, that alone makes it worth experiencing.

I developed this on a BigScreen Beyond 2/w an R9700 (9070XT) and it's very playable at 50% resolution with all the graphics settings turned to high.

Anyways if you find issues or want to contribute - you can use the github repo to clone it , submit PRs, file issues, etc.

If you're excited about this file a support ticket with Alderon Games asking for official VR support:

Self-Promotion (Developer) I'm making a VR beach volleyball game where you call the play and your AI teammate sets you up to spike (early prototype, real Quest 2 footage)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Solo-ish dev here, building Side Out Beach VR for Meta Quest.

What you're seeing: I call the play, my AI partner sets the ball to that spot, and I spike it with an actual arm swing. The game measured that one at 76 km/h. Hits are all physical: forearm bump, overhead set, swing to spike, no button presses. Seated or standing both work.

Right now it's 2v2 with an AI teammate against two bots, three difficulty levels. Placeholder art, very much a prototype.

What would you want from a VR volleyball game? And if you've played others, what annoyed you about them?

Discussion Would GTA6 VR move the VR market? (Official and fully featured.)

So, I was just listening to a podcast about how GTA was the biggest selling non-mobile game by an order of magnitude, and how they go to absurd lengths to put little details into the game just for realism's sake.

Let's pretend we had an alternate universe where the grandchild of the CEO or whatever caught VR fever and pestered them nonstop until they agreed to fund a fully featured VR mode for this game. (Flatscreen mode is still there as well, a single purchase gets you both.)

  • PSVR2 support on PS5 and PS5 Pro. When the PC version comes later, full PCVR support. Including whatever online stuff they end up making.

  • Full motion controls, IK body, etc (think fully modded SkyrimVR.) Eye tracking for avatars, full body tracking on PCVR.

  • Full range of comfort features.

  • Somehow they magically optimise it to run decently in VR.

  • Lots of marketing about how you can finally be truly inside the world of GTA, etc.

So, with an excellent VR implementation, one of the biggest games in the world, and plenty of marketing, do you think this would have moved the needle in the VR market at all? Or would it be one of the biggest flops in gaming history? (The VR mode. The flatscreen game is unlikely to flop...)

This is an experimental development build. The latest cockpit features have been tested on native Quest; dedicated PCVR testing and performance improvements are ongoing. Stable 72 FPS across gameplay has not yet been achieved.

You need your own supported original Xbox USA/NTSC-U game data. No original game files are included. The Quest importer supports ISO/XISO, ZIP and 7z. For PCVR, extract compressed archives first and import the ISO/XISO.

Discussion VR action game but in third person view

• Upvotes

I'm now creating a VR game where you can control a character and cast spells in third person view. And I was always wondering why most of the VR games are in first person view.

I know it's for a better immersive experience, but I can assure good one in third person view, too.

The difference is simple, where the camera is attached, character head or not.

But third person view actually brings many advantages. You don't need to sway your head left to right cause you can see them in a wider view, resulting in a less movement of eyes. If there's an enemy behind you, you don't need to look around. (I'd still choose FP if it's a horror game lol)

The only problem so far is that you can't aim the target over a wall, you don't know what's blocking between the character and the target.

Anyone ever came up with the same idea or a recommendation of an existing TP VR game? I want to know if there's a demand there.

Self-Promotion (Developer) BIGGEST UPDATE TO REFRACT! - Refract Native & Linux Support (Quest Games on Linux!)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey r/virtualreality!

Big update for Refract, the free and open-source tool that lets you play Meta Quest games on your PC, in PCVR through SteamVR or flat on your monitor.

Refract Native (Windows)
Games now run their ARM64 code directly on your PC instead of inside the Android Emulator. That makes performance up to 3x better than before. It’s now the default in the launcher.

Linux support
Refract now runs on Linux through Waydroid, with GPU-accelerated Vulkan. You can play in a window or in PCVR through SteamVR, Monado or WiVRn. The launcher works on Linux too.

It’s still experimental and not every game works yet. I’ve only tested Linux on Fedora with an RTX 3080, so I’d love to hear how it goes on other distros and GPUs!

Try your favorite games and let me know how they run on your hardware. I’d love your feedback!

Self-Promotion (Developer) We’re making PADEL 01, a padel game for Quest 3/3S — free beta available

Hi everyone! I’m one of the developers of PADEL 01, a padel game for Meta Quest 3 and 3S.

For anyone unfamiliar with padel, it’s a racket sport where wall and glass rebounds are part of the game. Translating that into VR is one of the things we’re working on, and the ball physics, rebounds and bot behaviour still need feedback.

You can play in mixed reality in your living room, through a portal court, or on a full virtual court. The current beta includes singles and doubles against bots, practice drills, three racket types and weekly online challenges.

Here’s the gameplay video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QtBscgRLOs

The beta is free to download:
https://aaronwilzig.itch.io/padel01

Installation requires sideloading through SideQuest with developer mode enabled. Instructions and the APK link are on the game page.

Discord for feedback and installation help:
https://discord.gg/UqWS4Vw7MW

If you try it, I’d appreciate hearing where the ball or bots behave unexpectedly. Feedback from people who play real padel would be especially useful.

Happy to answer questions here too!

Photo/Video Bad Girls - Tooned-Up (Gottlieb 1988)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Released by D. Gottlieb & Co. in October 1988, the original Bad Girls is a quintessential piece of late 80s solid state arcade history. Built on Gottlieb's System 80B platform with a production run of around 2,500 units, the game leans heavily into a campy pool hall aesthetic complete with upbeat music, a distinctive 4 flipper layout, a fast action ramp, and a two ball multiball mode. While legendary for its catchy arcade tunes and fun layout, the original machine is equally famous (or infamous) for its classic late 80s digitized photo backglass styling.

Decades later, the talented Hauntfreaks stepped in to completely reimagine the aesthetic with the Tooned Up alternate version, giving the cult classic a massive stylistic overhaul. Moving away from the original photo real look, Hauntfreaks injected vibrant new life into the machine with custom cartoon styled character art, entirely redone lighting, custom pool table inserts, crisp shadows, and detailed physics material updates. Backed by coding and VR integration help from DGrimmReaper alongside elite Nfozzy physics and Fleep sound integration by Burger, this release transforms a divisive 80s oddity into an absolute must play showstopper that looks, sounds, and plays phenomenally.

BGFX 10.8.1
I7-9700 (No OC), 64gb DDR4 3666, RTX 3060 12GB, and NVME drives.
Virtual Desktop Wired, Quest 3

This short showcase is meant to highlight the dedication and hard work our community puts into these tables and hopefully inspire more people to dive into the VPX VR scene!
Videos like this got me hooked, and started my VR endeavor.
I love BGFX 10.8.1! The visual rendering efficiency easily outpaces OpenGL on 10.8.0, making even older, legacy tables look incredible.
Running Virtual Desktop wired. Horizon Link (Meta Link) was completely removed from my system.
Thanks VD!
That said, there are still a few stability and workflow hurdles to clear in BGFX 10.8.1.. For instance, requiring a table to launch just to access the configuration menu remains a bit clunky. DMD's not showing up or color ones not working for a lot of tables. No clear explanations of how to config all the new settings and what they do. Some textures not showing up right, lighting. Random crashes.
But the ones that work look mind blowing, even on older tables.

Cheers!!!!

Self-Promotion (Developer) I made a standalone Quest app that recreates using a 90s PC, from swapping disks to installing Doom

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m the developer of DOSK, a retro PC app for Meta Quest. I wanted to recreate the experience of using an old computer, including the steps before you actually get to play anything.

This video shows inserting and removing floppy disks, installing Doom from a CD, running Windows 98, and browsing the settings. Everything runs on the headset itself, without a connected PC.

Supported disk images appear as floppy disks and CDs on the virtual desk. You can pick them up and insert them into the drives. The hardware buttons work, the CD tray opens and closes, and the activity LEDs flicker while the drives make seek sounds.

It runs DOS software and supports installing Windows 95 and 98 using your own installation media. Compatible games can use 3dfx Voodoo acceleration. There’s also an experimental stereoscopic mode with adjustable depth for supported Voodoo-accelerated games. These still run on the virtual monitor, rather than becoming full VR ports.

For me, swapping disks and hearing the drives work are as much a part of the nostalgia as the games themselves. That’s what I wanted to capture here.

Compatibility and performance vary by title. The commercial games and Windows installation media shown in the video aren’t included.

Discussion I got my home-made Meta VR glasses working. What games should I try?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m using my $300 Viture Pro 2 glasses. This is the only game I tested and yes it does feel like VR. Sort of like a VR-lite experience. Or a preview version of the VR game. It’s playable.

It’s definitely sharper and and better colors than any other VR headset I’ve tried (except the Vision Pro). So there’s a little bit of a wow factor. The Fov is small though. I’m still trying to decide if it’s better to just play games in 3D instead of VR at this Fov.

I will test some more games and report back.
