Note From r/VictoriaBC Mods | Election Season 2026 is Upon Us!

Hello everyone, happy double election season 2026!

With both municipal & provincial elections approaching in under a month, this sub will be (and already is) inundated with political content. Please review the following regarding political content in the sub during election season.

  • Be civil & decent to each other, even when in disagreement. Political season is a great time to practice the virtue of disagreeing without being disagreeable. In other words, to respond to an argument rather than attacking someone's character. We will remove content and give out bans when appropriate to keep the discussion civil and constructive.
  • Political posts should be linked to an official, legitimate news outlet or publication. Please avoid self-made political posts, social-media screenshots, rants/raves, etc. There is no lack of political news content, and we'd like to keep discussion based around legitimate coverage to help mitigate the spread of misinformation, and to minimize redundancy.
  • Mind the municipal & provincial distinction re: relevancy to Victoria. We encourage folks to post provincial political content over at r/BritishColumbia and to focus on municipal issues here at r/VictoriaBC. As local & provincial politics do overlap, some provincial content may be appropriate this sub, but in general please keep political content focused on Victoria & region.
  • Posts that break the 'No Editorialized Headlines' rule will be removed regardless of the content or engagement prior to removal. When posting an article, the post title should match the article's headline exactly. Any editorialization, whether intentional or not, will result in the removal of that post.
  • Help us out by reporting rule-breaking content. If you think a post or comment breaks the rules, please report it so we can review the content. Keeping in mind the next rule...
  • Please don't abuse the report function. Disagreement is not a reportable offence - please utilize the downvote button if you disagree with a post or comment. Misusing the report feature breaks Reddit-wide rules, and we report all users who abuse the report function which can lead to site-wide restrictions to one's Reddit account. Thank you for not misusing the report function, we appreciate it.
  • Avoid low-effort posts & comments. We've heard it all before. Save those low-effort one liners for Thanksgiving dinner or Twitter. We'll remove low-effort content in our efforts to maintain civil discourse.
  • No AI-generated content. Any post or comment suspected of being generated by AI will be removed.

The sub's safety & crowd-control features have also been turned up to help filter out content from bots, newer accounts, trolls, brigaders, etc. If you have content removed that you think shouldn't have been, please message the mods and we will review it when we can.

Thanks everyone!

Politics Political views aside, can we all agree that municipal slates are garbage?

Like, older conservative Saanich residents, let me spin my chair and my baseball cap backwards and sit down for some real talk with you for a sec. You don't like me building skyscrapers next to your house so that young people have place to live, and I don't like you pretending to care about individual mature trees so that things can stay exactly the same.

But can we set that aside for a moment, and agree that the concept of having a slate of candidates is garbage?

It insults your intelligence first of all, by asking you to just vote for a brand rather than for each individual who best represents you.

It reduces your choice, because everyone in the slate makes the same ambiguous promises, so they're functionally interchangeable.

Finally, you don't need to vote for them because there are alternatives that represent you. Karen Harper isn't on the Save Our Saanich slate, but she ain't no progressive, she'd represent your older homeowner interests just fine. Same with council, there are plenty of non-slate candidates opposed to development, opposed to bike lanes, opposed to all the same things you oppose.

Can we all please agree that slates suck, and make it known with our votes on voting day so that no one tries it again the next time around?

Who’s your Victoria regular?

By that I mean a person you see around constantly. Someone who shows up in your day-to-day who you are aware of but know nothing about them.

Event Slow burn dating

I'm curious if anyone has been to one of these events and what their insights might be. Google just reminded me that I have a ticket for next week and I'm just trying to get an idea of what to expect. Are there games or group activities planned? Is it just a solo mission? What's the flow and facilitation like? Should I just take up knitting cat outfits and give up on dating?

Event Anyone want two tickets to The Odyssey at IMAX for tonight?

• Upvotes

I have two tickets to tonight’s showing of The Odyssey at IMAX at 7:15pm. I can no longer make it and don’t want them to go to waste! They’re decent seats too .. row J which is near the top/back and not in the front/closest to the screen.

Edit: tickets have been claimed!

Is Galey's Farm Festival of Fear & Haunted Mansion worth it as an adult?

It's one of the only things going on in Victoria this Halloween. I have never been there before and just wondering if it's worth it.

Anything made you smile during municipal election cycle?

• Upvotes

This municipal election cycle felt pretty tense. Just wondering if there was anything that made you smile that wasn’t related to all the usual campaign noise. Something silly, maybe even juvenile.

For me it was a “Vote for Plant” sign right across the street from the HCP Gardens entrance. If it was intentional, it was genius.

I'm curious about people's views on independent candidates and municipal slates, and how they affect democracy and governance. Thanks, Colette Baty

Saanich Election

Just a reminder than Rishi Sharma ran as a BC “Liberal” (now the conservatives) not long ago. Him and the entire Save our Saanich people are conservatives and NIMBYs! They will slash services and build nothing! No new homes or infrastructure will be built with them!

Vote for anyone else!

This is not meant to be rude but, why should we care who firefighters think should be in office?

I feel like I've missed something. Why is the firefighters union's endorsements such a big deal?
