I keep seeing comments about how REAL NANAIMO candidates and the party are weridos or insane

This is dangerous because it's important to remember they are well organised and pick people to play into the grift

They want to spread chaos and fear so they can make money off it

It's more American culture coming here with a play book well studied.

Don't just write it off as werid

Why I won't support any business that supported them, it's not politics as normal it's attempt to change Canadian politics to more outrageous American style division

Around 7,000 votes already cast in Nanaimo. That's a big jump on the last election. A sign of a bigger turnout? Or just people preparing for the provincial election next weekend?

Looking to meet new people! (27F & 24M)

Hey everyone! My brother (24M) and I (27F) have recently moved back to Nanaimo and are looking to expand our social circle and meet some new people.

We’re both pretty sporty, enjoy karaoke, and are down for things like playing sports, going out, trying new activities, grabbing food or just hanging out. We’re basically looking for good people to make memories with and have fun!

We’re also both single, so this is a bit of a long shot, but who knows 😂 We’re open to making new friends and potentially meeting someone special along the way.
If anyone’s in a similar position or just looking for new people to hang out with, feel free to reach out ! Or if you can point us in the right direction to socialize that’d great too x

REAL Candidate Malcom Cooke believes a "Trantifa" terror network operates internationally and is out to get you. (

You can't make this up. This guy believes a terrorist organization made up of international Transgender Antifascists is out to get us. I would think it was just a Russian bot/troll if he wasn't actually showing up to REAL candidate meetings. And yes, this post is recent.

Nanaimo Needs Some Positivity, So Here’s Mine

I’ve always been a bit of a wanderer. I’ve lived in 3 provinces and 2 territories, never quite fitting into most of the places I’ve lived. As someone who’s spent my lifetime battling mental illness (undiagnosed until my late 20’s/early 30’s), I’ve really struggled when it comes to finding “home” - somewhere that makes me feel at peace. It isn’t made any easier by being Indigenous - a group of people who, to this day, face an immense amount of both societal and systematic racism all across this country.

I first visited Nanaimo in January of 2023, shortly after moving to Port Renfrew. The majority of my early “Island Life” shopping trips had been to Duncan or Sooke, and Nanaimo was a breath of fresh air. A blue collar town that reminded me of where I grew up, but actually beautiful (unlike my hometown St. Albert, AB, which is incredibly depressing to look at). The people were friendly, there seemed to be a sense of community, and the Indigenous culture present (thanks to Snuneymuxw) made me feel like I wasn’t some kind of unwanted creature. Unfortunately, I ended up relocating to Iqaluit, NU in June 2023 due to my then-partner being unable to find work in Renfrew, but I almost immediately missed the Island, and just 3 months later, I decided to return to BC.

I moved to North Nanaimo, just off Rutherford, shortly after that. Inexplicably, I felt this immediate sense of peace - this feeling that maybe, possibly, I’d finally found my home, and that feeling only grew stronger the longer I lived in this town. Whether it was swimming with my dog at Invermere Beach, overspending at the Cedar Market, grabbing a beer at Wolf or White Sails, catching a Clippers game, meeting up with a small group that started here on Reddit, playing Pokemon Go community days at Maffeo Sutton, grabbing a Nanaimo bar at Red’s, or singing karaoke at the Quarterway Pub, I felt like I fit in, like I found my community, and honestly? Truly happy for the first time in a long time.

In June of last year, I made the decision to relocate to North Vancouver for my relationship. It’s a decision that I’ve regretted every single day since then. The relationship was absolutely worth a massive amount of effort, but when you spend your lifetime looking to find “home”, nothing is worth giving that up for.

Nanaimo gets a lot of flack. Yeah, downtown could be better. Yeah, there are serious issues with drugs and homelessness. Yeah, housing is massively overpriced, and yeah, the local government is absolute dogshit. But y’know what? I know I only lived here for a short time, but this is my favourite place. This is my home, and I’ll happily argue with anybody who chooses to put it down. I’ve returned here many times since moving (and am currently sitting in the lineup at Departure Bay to head back to the mainland), and these feelings have only grown stronger the longer I’ve lived away from here.

So thank you, Nanaimo, for giving me one of the happiest periods of my life, and I genuinely can’t wait to move back home.

BREAKING: NANAIMO ELECTION CAUGHT FOLLOWING THE LAW

Some people are casting doubt on the Nanaimo electoral process so the bastion is setting the record straight - From the Bastion:

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61591057172150

No, you don’t need ID if you’re on the voters list. No, that isn’t fraud. Yes, it’s written down. We linked it.

Posts are making the rounds in a local Facebook group today. One voter wasn’t asked for ID at Beban and wants to know what stops them from voting again Saturday, or voting for a friend. Another called it “insane” that you don’t need ID. Fair questions. The answers have been on the City’s website the whole time.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

WHY NOBODY ASKED FOR YOUR ID

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Nanaimo uses the Provincial Voters List from Elections BC. If you registered with Elections BC by August 18, you should be on it.

If you’re on the list, provincial law says you don’t need ID. You give your name, sign the voting book, and declare that you’re eligible and haven’t already voted. That “promise” the election worker mentioned? That’s the declaration. It’s a legal statement with your signature on it.

Not on the list (new, moved, never registered)? You register on the spot with two pieces of ID, one with your signature. That’s likely why some people at Beban were asked for ID and some weren’t.

The checking happens at the list, not the door. Elections BC keeps the list current using information from voters, ICBC, Elections Canada and local election officials.

This isn’t a Nanaimo loophole. Anywhere in BC, if you’re on the voters list, you don’t need ID to vote.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

“WHAT’S STOPPING ME FROM VOTING AGAIN?”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The law, and your own signature.

These are all offences under the Local Government Act:

voting twice

getting a ballot in someone else’s name (yes, including your friend’s)

making a false declaration

The penalty is up to $5,000 and/or a year in jail. The Chief Election Officer can also take an election’s validity to court. And every candidate can appoint scrutineers to watch the voting.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

WHY THIS IS EXTRA CONFUSING RIGHT NOW

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Two elections, a week apart, two rulebooks.

MUNICIPAL: Saturday, October 17. On the voters list? No ID needed.

PROVINCIAL: Saturday, October 24, with advance voting October 16 to 21. Every voter must prove identity and address, either with ID, with two documents, or by having someone vouch for them.

So if someone told you “you need ID to vote,” they’re right. Next week.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

THE PREACHY PART

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Not knowing a rule is fine. Asking the election worker was the right move, and she gave the right answer. Jumping from “I didn’t know that” to "THIS IS CRAZY!!!" and “DO NOT REELECT ANYONE!!!” is the problem.

On October 9, REAL Nanaimo released a video that, among other things, questioned the impartiality of the City’s Chief Election Officer.

We don’t know who today’s posters support, and we won’t guess. Receipts, not vibes. But we know the pattern. Doubt the referee early. Let a legal rule go viral. Call the result fake on Sunday. If anyone tries it, the answer’s in this post. Screenshot it.

Think someone actually committed an election offence? Report it with evidence to the Chief Election Officer. “THIS IS CRAZY!!!” in a Facebook group is not a report.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

FOR SATURDAY

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Voting is 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at any of 11 voting places (Protection Island: 10 to 6). Vote wherever is closest.

Not sure you’re registered? Bring two pieces of ID, one with a signature.

And don’t forget the school trustees.

TL;DR: On the list, no ID. Not on the list, two pieces of ID. Voting twice, up to $5,000 and a year in jail. Provincial election next week, different rules. None of this is fraud.

Kids community

Good day everyone,

I just relocated to nanaimo with my wife and two children. My wife is homeschooling our kids which is making it difficult for our kids to create new relationships. In prince George we had a local card shop that would host kids to play pokemon/dungeons and dragons on Saturdays. Does anyone know if nanaimo has something like that? My son is 11 and is really hurting for a community like he had before.

Any help would be incredible. Thank you!

Ducks

Somebody's ducks are loose on Nanaimo River Road close to the South Forks corner. I tried for about half an hour to get them off of the road however they were quite determined to stay in the middle. I don't want to see them get hit, but I had to go just hoping somebody from their household sees this.

Hi all!

I've got a first date tonight (Me 42F, him 51M). I plan things for a living, I'm also jetlagged AF from getting back from England on Sunday.

I cannot make a decision on where to go.

Please recommend places cause my brain isn't braining.

EDIT - he lives in Duncan, I live in Nanoose

Edit #2 - we’ve decided on a place, but I’m not going to say cause some of y’all are VERY critical without knowing the whole story.

This just happened today at my kids school. Vancouver and Victoria already ban the sale of bearspray (not bear mace which is a different story) to minors. Public safety needs to be taken more seriously by city hall...

Advance voting in Nanaimo today? Figure out who to cast your ballot for

Nanaimo News Now has a 'Know Your Vote' tool to help voters find candidates who match with their views and opinions. It's helpful in culling the list for 40 Council candidates down to a much more managable 8-12 that you can do some further reading on.
