Who’s your Victoria regular?

By that I mean a person you see around constantly. Someone who shows up in your day-to-day who you are aware of but know nothing about them.

Politics Political views aside, can we all agree that municipal slates are garbage?

Like, older conservative Saanich residents, let me spin my chair and my baseball cap backwards and sit down for some real talk with you for a sec. You don't like me building skyscrapers next to your house so that young people have place to live, and I don't like you pretending to care about individual mature trees so that things can stay exactly the same.

But can we set that aside for a moment, and agree that the concept of having a slate of candidates is garbage?

It insults your intelligence first of all, by asking you to just vote for a brand rather than for each individual who best represents you.

It reduces your choice, because everyone in the slate makes the same ambiguous promises, so they're functionally interchangeable.

Finally, you don't need to vote for them because there are alternatives that represent you. Karen Harper isn't on the Save Our Saanich slate, but she ain't no progressive, she'd represent your older homeowner interests just fine. Same with council, there are plenty of non-slate candidates opposed to development, opposed to bike lanes, opposed to all the same things you oppose.

Can we all please agree that slates suck, and make it known with our votes on voting day so that no one tries it again the next time around?

Introducing WAVE - Water Access and Venues for Everyone

• Upvotes

Hello Champions!

I am part of a group of folks who are trying to come up with some grassroots approaches to getting more recreation and pool space prioritized in greater Victoria.

Full disclosure, I sit on the board of directors for the parent association of Pacific Coast Swimming, and the main reason I joined was to help figure out a way to advocate for a change in approach to funding regional recreation infrastructure. At our recent AGM our Registrar mentioned that we currently have a wait list over 300 kids long, and we've had to cut our roster by a similar amount, and that mostly impacts our pre-competitive alternative to swimming lessons in the lightning fast program.

With my kid being part of PCS, I find the conversation and constant delay and handwringing about big projects like Crystal Pool to be unbelievably frustrating. These facilities serve more than the municipality that is responsible for building, operating, and maintaining them. So I'm taking a stand with a group of others who are looking to change that conversation in a meaningful way.

We've build a website https://crdwave.ca and we're asking candidates for the municipal election for their stance and ideas on how to change this conversation to be one that is regionally driven. We're already seeing voices shouting that the Crystal Pool project needs to be halted because of rising costs, but the reality is that we're only going to see those costs continue to rise, and infrastructure is not going to be able to keep up with we continue to dither.

This problem is only going to get worse when Commonwealth reaches the end of it's life, so let's let all of the council hopefuls know where we stand.

Event Anyone want two tickets to The Odyssey at IMAX for tonight?

I have two tickets to tonight’s showing of The Odyssey at IMAX at 7:15pm. I can no longer make it and don’t want them to go to waste! They’re decent seats too .. row J which is near the top/back and not in the front/closest to the screen.

Edit: tickets have been claimed!

Anything made you smile during municipal election cycle?

This municipal election cycle felt pretty tense. Just wondering if there was anything that made you smile that wasn’t related to all the usual campaign noise. Something silly, maybe even juvenile.

For me it was a “Vote for Plant” sign right across the street from the HCP Gardens entrance. If it was intentional, it was genius.

Event Slow burn dating

I'm curious if anyone has been to one of these events and what their insights might be. Google just reminded me that I have a ticket for next week and I'm just trying to get an idea of what to expect. Are there games or group activities planned? Is it just a solo mission? What's the flow and facilitation like? Should I just take up knitting cat outfits and give up on dating?

Hi, just wondering if we have any healthy food options open past 10:30 pm? I get off work late and the only food places open it seems like aren’t the most healthy. And most grocery stores are closed

Question Recommendation? ISO dietician for senior adults

• Upvotes

hi all. My mom is in her 80s and having a lot of difficulty with her stomach and bowels. She is interested in finding a dietician who works with senior citizens/geriatric clients to review their diet and make recommendations. Her family doctor has not been much help, unfortunately.

Does anyone know of such a dietician in the Victoria area? Thanks so much.
