Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 Professional [Nintendo 3DS][Unknown Year] Can anyone identify this game from these screenshots?

Post image
68 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to identify a Nintendo 3DS game that I spotted in a TikTok video.

Unfortunately, the game only appears for a few seconds, but I managed to capture screenshots showing both screens.

Here's what I can see:

  • Top screen: A small character with bright yellow hair, a backpack, and a colorful outfit exploring what looks like a dark building or dungeon.
  • Bottom screen: A green grid-based map showing the layout of rooms and corridors.
  • On the right side of the touchscreen, there are three vertical icons and a large golden circular control with the word "OFF" next to it.
  • The character and graphics remind me a little of Yo-kai Watch, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone recognize this game, especially the bottom-screen interface?

I've attached the clearest screenshots I could get.

Thanks in advance!

Magical Happy Garden Simulation [mobile?][2010s-2020s] Some bizarre-looking game I'd like to know the name of

Post image

A friend of mine was posting videos from this game without any context. When i asked him what it was called, he just said it was "The Whatever Game", but I'm 90% sure he was fucking around when he called it that. He's one of those people who oftentimes won't give you a serious answer to anything xD, so yeah.

[PS2] [Mid-2000s] 3D game with stylized realism in a castle or manor, you play as a kid/teen, NOT dark cloud 2

• Upvotes

Platform(s): PS2

Genre: not entirely sure, i think it might have been action-adventure

Estimated year of release: early to mid-2000s

Graphics/art style: it was 3D and in a third person perspective from behind the character. i remember it looking fairly realistic at the time, but i think it was probably stylized realism that doesn't look as realistic as i remember

Notable characters: i think the main character was a kid or preteen/teen, but i can't remember much else. the only other thing is that i think the antagonist at the start of the game might be your dad? my strongest memory of the game is that there's this cutscene where you're eating dinner with him and for some reason i thought it was really funny that he just keeps eating and his porkchop never gets any smaller if you don't advance the dialogue

Notable gameplay mechanics: unfortunately i can't really remember much except i think it was real time combat, since i got stuck probably due to being afraid to approach enemies. i want to say that your character maybe had magical powers but i really don't remember

Other details: i don't think the cutscenes were voiced, or maybe not all of them were, because of the detail about the dad repeating his porkchop eating animation infinitely. the characters are human, not anthropomorphic animals or anything. the only area i remember is a sewer, but it definitely wasn't dark cloud 2. the art style is all wrong and there's no circus in the game i remember. the time period the game was set in seemed to be not quite modern, but not medieval or anything either, perhaps the 1800s? wish i could remember more, but it was a rental that i only got once. i don't even know if it was good, i just wanna know what it was lol

Lust for Darkness [PC] [2000] A Eldritch sex cult game NSFW

First of all. Fuck this subreddit i've been trying to post this for a while now. I wanna go to bed

Next. I'm looking for any footage or proof of this one game or Game series

Its NSFW because sex. But it's not a hentai game. It was moreso used as a background plot point. Anyways I vividly remember watching a video on youtube talking about it but I'm guessing it got deleted. The game itself was about some guy in a Sex cult trying to escape i think. There was some Eldritch theming and I think an ending had the main character fuck a deity and die in the process. And I know there was a moment where the antagonist said men, woman, children, they all can enjoy to feeling of rape or something like that. It was definitely something controversal like that. There was Gun based combat too. Not sure about melee. But this is all I can remember.

Edit: it was Lust for Darkness. Thank you /startadeadhorse

[PC, Windows] [2006 - 2014] Garage Decoration Flash Game (Hot Wheels?)

• Upvotes

Platform(s): It was a PC running I think Windows 7, we used Firefox as our browser. It was likely on Mattel Games or some sort of Hot Wheels flash game compilation website. It may not even be a hot wheels game.

Genre: Isometric Menu-Based Flash Game

Estimated year of release: 1990-2005

Graphics/art style:
For starters, it had graphics similar to Hot Wheels Flash Games such as Bash Beast Beware, T-Rex Rampage: Prehistoric Pizza, or Hot Wheels: SharkBite Bay Adventure.

I remember it was isometric with some sort of patterned background that I remember being blue, maybe slowly scrolling the whole time, and while my scuffed recreation is pixels due to MsPaint, it was high quality with animated features like the decorations and clickable things.

There was floor options. I remember the Grey carpet with speckles was my favorite, though there was a white and black checkered floor option too and I'm sure others. My memory is failing on if there was an arcade carpet or not, I don't think so. The most distinct decoration I can remember was a traffic light. Though I think there was also one of those black rotating disco balls with rainbow lights? I remember you being able to place furniture, too, but I don't remember any of it. A white couch keeps coming to my mind, but I can't see any visuals for it.

The visuals and gameplay sort of reminded me of FNAF: Pizzeria Simulator's daytime section, though I remember it was less restricted and allowed you to move your items across the room anywhere in a very accommodating grid or something.

Notable gameplay mechanics:
I think it was a part of some sort of game with an island as the hub. The island had a beach, a junkyard with a tetris-like or parking lot sorter minigame, a city, and maybe a forest, and all of the locations were clickable and lead to different minigames or minigame groups. The one I'm looking for I'm fairly sure was in the city. It was a garage decoration game. It might've been standalone though.

You started with a blank room, and I don't remember how, but you were able to place furniture and move it around with the goal of finishing the decoration to either put a car in or act as a home hub to return to after completing minigames, but I don't remember cars for some reason. That might just be because I used it to decorate for fun and didn't care about the cars.

I remember it was a demo or something. Or maybe I just didn't login? It never saved my progress, so ever time I came to it, I'd decorate it again in the same way and I always found it satisfying to arrange it in the same order every time.

Other details:
I have a picture I created of what it sort of looks like in my mind, as well as a map that reminds me of the worldmap I'm remembering, though it wasn't the game in the screenshot and had a different, more chunky style.

Thanks, MsPaint

[Android] [2015-2019] Pixel art tower defense where toys are your towers and you protect a sleeping baby from monsters

I'm trying to find an Android game I played around 2015-2019. It was free, and I can't remember the name.

What I remember:

- Tower defense, similar to Bloons TD in how it played

- Pixel art style, with a brownish UI

- Small red health bars on the enemies

- You had to protect a sleeping baby in a little house from waves of monsters

- Your towers were toys that you placed and upgraded

- One tower was a brownish teddy bear that grew fists to punch the enemies

The teddy could die and respawn for free, because you bought a little house for him as part of the tower

- I think there was a bomb you could throw to kill all the enemies on screen

What I've already tried:

Baby Defense TD, Toys vs. Nightmares, The Creeps!, Midnight Terrors and Dream Defense. None of them matched.

It may no longer be on Google Play. Any help is appreciated.

[PC][early 2000s] Sci-fi point n click game with blue aliens

• Upvotes

Hello! around 2005 I bought a game from a flea market and just can't get it out of my mind.

I remember it being like point and click/puzzle POV.

You start in a spaceship or some other kind of metallic room, it's very dark and brooding.

I remember there being blue aliens in the cover or/and instructions, kinda humanoid looking.

That's it unfortunately since I never got out of the starting room lol.

[PC] [2000s] Young boy escaping a pirate and looking for treasure

• Upvotes

Platform(s): Pc

Genre: 2D Point and Click / choose your own adventure maybe, set in the present time for the release

Estimated year of release: Around 2000? i played it between 2000 and 2004

Graphics/art style: I barely remember but i think very cartoony with a normal basic color scheme

Notable characters: A young male main character, some pirates later on, meerkats at the end

Notable gameplay mechanics: At the start of the game you had to choose which items you want to take with you, depending on the items you could get through different situations in the game. you can go different routes to reach the end of the game and could fail if you pick something wrong

Other details: The game started with you getting a letter from your grandpa(?) or finding it and having to fill in words to read it. I dont remember a lot, but i think the letter told you to get a treasure on an island (could be wrong tho). After that you packed a bag and you could choose from some items what to take with you, with limited space. Then you start your adventure, which i dont remember much of. Here are some scenes that i do remember:

You are trying to get onto a boat at the docks to reach the island and there are different options.

You are on a cruise ship (or just a big ship) and it gets captured by pirates. There are different outcomes depending on which items you have or options you pick. One is, the pirates take you and you're in a cell afterwards trying to escape.

I think it was also possible that you end up on a tiny island and have to build a tiny raft to escape.

At the end there were some meerkats but i don't remember what they did, but i think you had to click on right one for whatever reason.

[PC][1990s?] Top-down pixel game, I think based on Little Red Riding Hood.

I've gone on MANY deep dive searches for this game over the years with no luck. Im starting to believe I made this all up in a dream or if I somehow combined the memory of multiple games into one. Maybe im insane.

I had to have been no older than 8 years old when I played this, so me memory is VERY limited but I do have a specific 2 second scene I remember vividly.

The game is a top-down pixel game, very legend of zelda-like. I recall it being black and white, very similar to Minit. You play as a young girl who I believe was based on/inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, but I dont recall if it was explicitly stated to be a red riding hood game. I do believe there was a wolf enemy/enemies as well.

Now for the very specific part I remember! For some reason in the game there is a Mandrake root. When you pull it out of the ground it screams (as they do). I dont recall if there was an audio for the scream but I remember the screen shakes a bit. If you pull it out without earmuffs the girl collapses, which I DO recall there being an audible thud for.

The game is NOT Jiji and the Mysterious Forest [but i did play this as well, if I am making this whole game up then it was probably inspired by Jiji lol]

It is also not Once Upon a Time - Little Red Riding Hood

[Unknown][2015-Present] Game with golems/constructs using some kind of stone tablet as its brain/instructions?

I don't want to make up too many details and confuse people, but I feel like I remember playing a game a while back that may have been a real time RPG, possibly open world. I recall that there were some kind of golems/constructs in the game and that they were controlled by some kind of stone tablet or component that had to be created/enscribed/enchanted in a way that made them work. I feel like they were used for manual labour/heavy work. I feel like it was just a general bit of world building, maybe involving a side quest. I don't really remember what they looked like. I feel like a quest may have involved collecting one of their components to take to an NPC.

I feel like it was fantasy rather than sci fi.

I don't know where this memory has come from but I can't shake it or work out what it was.

[pc][indie] Game about 2D ball

The game had you play as a small (maybe red?) flat 2D ball, while the environment around you was 3D. It looked like a cute ms paint game where you can go around helping npcs out. Everything had a ms paint look to it. There were specific colored rooms that if you waited long enough in them they would show that it’s secretly got some lore and horror in in. There was some girl who became the queen or witch in this game and you had to do something with her for a true ending.

[Arcade] [2004?] Racing game with a red car on the marquee

Post image

I have a photo of a yellow marquee and a red car. Mid 2000s.

It's not Daytona or Scud Race, Initial D, Maximum Tune or F355. Anyone have any other ideas?

This one is even a head scratcher for me.

The Big Bonus [PC Windows][1994-1997] Demo Disc

[Platform]: PC (Possibly MS DOS, Windows 95 or Windows 98)

Genre: Multiple

[Estimated year of release]: 1995-1998

Graphics/art style: Multiple

Notable characters: Demo games

Notable gameplay mechanics: Demo games

Other details: One game I KNOW was on the disc was Zeb, https://kliktopia.org/details/Zeb.html , created in TGF (The Game Factory).

I have a VAGUE memory of having a demo disc for my Windows 95 or Windows 98 PC, that had a whole bunch of games which I believe were demos. I know the above game I mentioned, Zeb, was on it, but there were many other games, that, sadly, I don't remember the name of, but have some memories regarding it.

I think that there was some sort of tunnel delving game in it, where you had to find your sister, and another game looked like some sort of Hunchback of Notre Dam demos as well, one where you're "on rails" and running forward. You had to jump over obstacles, like pits and such. Kind of like The Dinosaur Game. The other Hunchback game was little dudes climbing up on ladders and you had to knock the ladders over or you lost.

I believe the CD was red, and said "demo games" or something of the like, and the menu was red too. When you scrolled down through the list of games a thumbnail and description of the game showed on the right.

Please, I've searched for ages, and have gotten as far as The Game Factory and Zeb, but I'm now at my wits end trying to find this disc, can anyone help me?

[PC] [2000s] Game about an anthropomorphic animal investigating a mansion / looking for clues to solve a murder

Hey this is a long shot! i’ve asked before i think. I’ve been trying to find a game that i played alongside purble place.

You played as an anthropomorphic animal, i think. You were investigating a mansion, to find clues of a murder.

It was a point and click game if i remember right. It had a story to it and had a fair amount of dialogue.

Going based off of very vague memory one of the characters had a steampunk type aesthetic to them.

I think every other character was an animal. They were all anthropomorphic

[Mobile] [2010s] Plague Inc but its about global warming

• Upvotes

NOT Eco Inc, I like that game but it was totally inspired by this one

It has a red background, a rotatable Earth, a thermometer on the right side of the screen, and you’re trying to get the global temperature above a certain point. I remember one of the quickest ways to get CO2 up was more cows to release methane.

[PC][2010s] Educational school computer game UK

• Upvotes

I've been struggling for a while now to remember this educational game I would play in the computer suite and was hoping someone here can help.

I can only remember vague details:

- there was easter island iconography, possibly set there or just had the statues?

- there was an owl in like a tropical shack/studio setting

- there were paint pots in the owl's studio that you could paint with

That's all I can come up with for now, but I cannot for the life of me remember where this is from. Please help!!

I remember seeing this trailer. Game had realistic graphics but somewhat unusual setting. Multiplayer co-op with melee combat against horror monsters. I think there was some gunpowder involved. Player Characters might have had some templar / crusader esque theme to them. Any Ideas?

[Windows PC] [2000s] game where you grew an ecosystem inside some sort of biodome

Hi!!

Trying to find a game I played with my brother when I was younger, and unfortunately I only have a vague recollection, but here's what I remember:

  • you were a little guy in some sort of terrarium or biodome where you started with a tiny bit of environment and you work to build up the ecosystem to grow and grow inside of the glass container. The game roughly looked like my drawing below:
  • Platform(s): Windows PC. Likely browser game, perhaps a flash game. MAYBE from a CD.
  • Genre: not sure what to label it as :(
  • Estimated year of release: sometime in the 2000s
  • Graphics/art style: it wasn't very pixelated, it was clean, solid and bright colors
  • Notable characters: none :(
  • Notable gameplay mechanics: nothing much more than what I described above
  • Other details: There might have been more than one enclosure you could grow. I believe it was a point and click.

Apologies for not being able to recall more. Hopefully someone knows what I'm referring to. Thank you in advance!!!

[Windows] [Late 2000's/Early 2010's] Puzzle game about splitting atoms, had a sarcastic Sun God narrator. Part of a collection(?)

I got a sudden unstoppable nostalgia for a game I used to play, and simply cannot find it on my own. It was a puzzle game played in a grid, where there were various atoms scattered about the grid. Clicking an atom would make it larger, until at max size it exploded and released a particle in each cardinal direction. These particles would enlarge/burst other atoms, creating combos.

The objective of each level was to clear the grid in the fewest moves, later levels introduced things like colour-connected portals that the particles could travel through. The detail I remember most was this sun-themed figure who would provide commentary on your playthrough. Being well over par would get him to say "Ew, you're going to give me sunspots", and getting well under par would get him to say "Nice, are you trying to outshine me?"

I also remember the game was part of a larger collection, which included things like chess, battleships, and a card game. The collection had character customisation, or you could play as a pre-set which included a dinosaur. The atom/sun puzzle game was part of the collection, but unlike something like chess it had its own independent instance ran using the games collection as a launcher.

[PS4][2018]I’m looking for a game that takes place inside a large building belonging to a defunct company; in one of the rooms, there’s a scale model of a city or neighborhood surrounded by a high wall that you have to jump over to reach it.

I’m looking for a game that takes place inside a large building belonging to a defunct company; in one of the rooms, there’s a scale model of a city or neighborhood surrounded by a high wall that you have to jump over to reach it.
