This 1960 archival photo captures a night game at Nippon Life Stadium (Nissei Stadium) in Osaka, Japan. Looming right behind the outfield is the illuminated reconstruction of Osaka Castle, offering one of the most unusual backdrops in professional sports history. The stadium served as the long-time home field for the Kintetsu Buffaloes before being demolished in 1997.

The disaster took place just outside Hamilton in Canada West, Ontario's name prior to Confederation. Moments after the train landed on the frozen canal, the ice broke, sending the engine and derailed cars into the icy water. 59 people were killed and 18 people were injured.

This British factory helped create a children’s club with 5 million members. The Ovaltine factory, 1923. [400x332]

Ovaltine Empire

This is the Ovaltine factory in Kings Langley, photographed in 1923, and its story is much stranger than you might expect. What began as a small factory in 1913 became part of one of Britain’s most recognisable brands. In 1935, Ovaltine launched a children’s club complete with secret codes, badges and radio broadcasts. By 1939, it had attracted an astonishing FIVE MILLION members. The factory eventually closed in 2002, and the site was redeveloped for housing, although its famous façade survived. I’ve been exploring forgotten British landmarks and their stories for my YouTube channel, MilesRowanVlogs, and it’s extraordinary how much history can hide behind buildings people pass every day. Imagine telling the workers in this photograph’s era that a century later, people would be living inside what remained of their factory.

What turned out to be her final mission was supposed to be a “milk run” – a routine, uneventful sortie completed without incident. However, the B-17 was hit by an 88 mm flack shell, which blew a 7-foot by 12-foot hole in the floor, roof and side of the aircraft. Despite the damage, the aircrew ensured Miss Irish went on to complete the mission, and the pilot, Capt. John P. Gibbons, managed to emergency land the plane at RAF Raydon, Suffolk.
