The Desjardins Canal disaster, where a train engine's front axle snapped, causing it to derail. The engine and wheels tore apart the wooden ties and bridge structure before the train fell 60 feet onto the frozen canal. (March 12th, 1857) [1920x1080]

The disaster took place just outside Hamilton in Canada West, Ontario's name prior to Confederation. Moments after the train landed on the frozen canal, the ice broke, sending the engine and derailed cars into the icy water. 59 people were killed and 18 people were injured.
