Hello, I’m a current 10th grader taking ‘advanced classes’ at my High-school. I’ve integrated myself into taking these Honors-AP classes since second semester of 9th grade. Right now I’m barely scraping by with my current grades, I have a problem of only allowing myself to be told what to do, meaning I only study when a teacher hands out a pre-made study guide or when told to study a specific page or worksheet, etc. Which was the case in 9th grade but now in 10th I no longer have to luxury to have that. So, I’m wondering, what would be the most efficient way to study these courses when I’m done with my homework, or even completing homework more efficiently.
I do have trouble paying attention in 2/3 of my hardest classes, which is Honors Chem. & Honors Alg. 2, which in class I completely do not follow through of what is being taught and I often get extremely bored but come to find out when I self-study at home or doing homework I easily find the concepts easy. So, I’m also wondering on how I can fix that, maybe my sleep schedule is part to blame.
I’m solid at understanding concepts being taught in class and be able to develop it, but, my memory for that information is often short-term, so I’m asking what would be an efficient way to ‘train’ memory, if possible rather than having to put everything down in flash-cards.
I rarely self-study besides doing my assigned homework and even I rarely do that, and if I do it’s often half-assed or rushed to the last minute. I’ve honestly picked up some pretty bad habits and I’m worried that it’ll be too late or I’ll take in some pretty harsh consequences before truly changing and adapting to the new workload.
I did take geometry over the summer to take Honors. Alg 2 this year in which it may affect some pretty core concepts for that course. Overall, it’s my Quiz Average that’s bringing my grade down because I find these concepts harder to grasp thus i’ll need to self-study/do the homework deeply.
For Spanish, I do have a missing quiz in the grade book so after making it up I should have a guaranteed A.
For Financial Literacy, I often have motivation to do the coursework and most times turn it in a day late, but if I change my habits it should be relatively easy to bring it back up to an 95 average or above.
Overall, I definitely need to change my habits, which includes studying more, getting a better sleep schedule and motivation for all of the coursework I’m doing. That’s just my perspective of seeing things,
All I’m asking for is advice on how to study more efficiently and on what will work best to to improve my memory as well, down to the littlest details that can compound and eventually get me back on my feet again.
Thank you,
M. Thomas, Highschooler
