(This is not hating on people who do this, nor is it targeted towards anybody, this is hating on the action, the concept of doing it)
Being “written poorly” by itself is a huge spectrum based on what one would consider “bad writing”. You can criticize it, sure, but to tell others how THEY should write their stories, as if they owe you their story, not only discourages young writers, but also creates a toxic environment for writers & media enjoyers in general.
Back in the older days, people didn’t care how “good” or “bad” the writing was. All I could remember was people having fun discussing their favorite characters.
But now, it’s just YouTube essay after YouTube essay, about either why this character has the best writing, or why that character has the worst writing, it gets tiring, and to a point, man.
Fandom has become waaaay too serious nowadays. It should turn back into a casual & fun space, in my opinion. Let people enjoy things! Even if these things suck.
Who knows. Maybe some kid with hopes and passions makes some random game one day. It blows up. People criticize it harshly and harass the kid. And they quit doing what they love as a result.
There have been times where criticism has impacted media in a positive way (Ahem, FNAF was only created because people kept telling Scott that the beaver protagonist in his previous family-friendly game looked like a scary animatronic), but most of the time, it only brings young artists & writers down.
Not saying you CAN’T criticize a piece of media/character (It’s okay to do it), but we should still focus on the awesome things these stories provide more often (Instead of focusing more on the negativity), because behind every piece of media, was someone who put effort & passion into it.
(AI slop is an exception from this, there is zero passion or soul put into that stuff, criticism is heavily encouraged)
