Language as someone from a latin country i hate The """""""word""""""" Latinx

Post image

Why? latinos is already gender neutral, adding the X just feels like Americans are trying to take the control over what pronouns a word uses without even knowing its context, AT ALL

this is stupid, and i thought this stupid bullshit was already forgotten, but no because i've seen this word multiple times in my feed

Language I hate when people make German out to be way harder than it is

Thumbnail

The German word for "name" is NAME. NAME. NOT PERSONENBENENNUNGSRUFKENNZEICHEN. IT IS WRITTEN EXACTLY LIKE THE ENGLISH WORD AND PRONOUNCED EXACTLY AS IT IS WRITTEN.

And why the HELL is "Schmetterling" singled out among the words for "butterfly"? Because it's four letters longer? Like yeah if you put a screaming face beside it and write it in bold all caps with three exclamation marks ANY word will sound stupidly long and aggressive or whatever.

Like ohhh look how weird and aggressive English is:

šŸ‡ØšŸ‡µ - beau šŸ˜€

šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡¦ - bello šŸ˜€

šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹ - bello šŸ˜€

šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹ - belo šŸ˜€

šŸ‡©šŸ‡Ŗ - schƶn šŸ˜€

šŸ‡³šŸ‡± - mooi šŸ˜€

šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ - BEAUTIFUL!!! 🤬

It's even worse when there's someone reading out the words and they pronounce every language in a casual, quiet tone, then they get to German and start yelling and straining their throat for no reason?

"German sounds ugly" yeah maybe because all the German you've ever heard are either Nazi speeches or stupidity such as this. People who say this will then listen to Germans talking casually and act surprised when it sounds like normal human conversation.

Language how everyone is replacing overwhelmed with overstimulated

Thumbnail

10.5k Upvotes

As someone on the autistic spectrum, seeing neurotypical people running around saying everything is overstimulating has got to stop. it used to be an actual term that people with ASD would describe their symptoms with, but now it’s ā€œquirkyā€œ and dumbed down to a feeling of mild discomfort. I just hate how autism is always made fun of, like when people were calling it ā€acousticā€ but then our terms get rebranded as something trendy and silly to say. like no, you’re not overstimulated, the word overwhelmed is right there😭😭

**I don’t mind if neurodivergent people use these terms, I’m only talking about when it’s used without the correct intention

Language I hate how people mistake AAVE (online) for "slangs" / "censorship"

Post image
5.8k Upvotes

Some ppl cant grasp to concept of "typing words how i pronounce/hear it" and its so strange to me.

Like if i type "fak" im not self-censoring "fuck", im typing "fak" bcs thats exactly the tone im saying it irl.

"yer" instead of "your", "ahh" instead of "ass", "shiet" instead of "shit", "der" instead of "there", "ova" instead of "over". Basically putting/removing emphasis on certain pronunciation in a word.

(ik some examples i gave might not be AAVE, just needed examples for the sake of it)

Language I hate the idea you can’t be pro-black, with a white partner.

Post image
3.0k Upvotes

I know the tag might seem wrong, but that’s really is the problem I have with it.

Pro-Black, should mean that you support black people. Period, end of sentence. Why does the fact that I have a white wife, the first white woman I was ever with mind you, take away from the close to 1/4 million dollars in various charitable contributions that I’ve had for my black community? I’ve ran cost drives, can drives, fundraisers for kids to go to school, all for the black community. I’m not ā€œpro-blackā€, because the very first white woman I was ever with, happened to be the one that I fell in love with?

I love all my people, and no matter what, it’s love āœŠšŸ¾ it just hurts me to see shit like this, because it makes me feel less than somehow.

Language I HATE how I have to watch how I say things JUST BECAUSE common words/ terms now mean something different in the big 26

Post image
5.6k Upvotes

IT IS SO ANNOYING how SO MANY commonly used/ simple and basic words now have either changed meaning entirely without me knowing or just means something bad/annoying. Here’s a few examples that make me constantly think about how I saw things:

Rack- the word ā€œrackā€ usually would refer to a shelf like furniture or a pair of deer antlers. Now why do I have to watch how I use this word (coming from someone who loves looking at large deer antlers) just because someone decides this should also be a nickname for a body part?šŸ’” I KNOW ITS MEANT FOR FOR AWHILE NOW IM JJST TALKING ABOUT SOLEY THE MEANING
Cookie- I think there’s a meme where it goes something like ā€œyou REALLY want that cookieā€ like yea I do?? I’d love chocolate chip of you have any… but like an actual baked good and not whatever your thinking…
67- like I CANT EVEN COUNT?? I feel like 6 and 7 are numbers people commonly use to guess an amount of something they knew was a little over half but really?? Idek where this originated but I pray it dies down soon

Lmk if there’s other words like these that you hate to even bring up due to changed meaning that requires an explanation just to say it!!

Language I hate the term "neurospicy"

Post image
4.9k Upvotes

It sounds childish and self-infantilising. It feels like an extension of the internet turning neurodivergence into a personality type rather than a disorder. I just know this term only refers to ADHD and autism level 1 and not people with Tourettes or autism level 3. Those two probably don't find any social capital in calling themselves neurospicy.

I get the compulsion to soften this thing you have been medically pathologised to have but frankly it sounds so Tumblr and corny. I'm autistic (ASD-1/Aspergers) and I've never found it to be a "superpower" or something to give a cute nickname to. My brain works differently and a lot of the times it destabilises and ruins my life. To each their own, but I fully cringe.

Language I hate the fact that you can’t easily emphasize the pronoun ā€œIā€ by capitalizing it

Post image
5.9k Upvotes

i couldn’t think of a good image

I usually use CAPITAL letters to emphasize my points on texts, like ā€œI’m stupid? No, YOU’re stupidā€ or ā€œwhat are we DOINGā€ or something but it just doesn’t work the same way with the pronoun ā€œIā€ because it just looks like I’m partaking in proper capitalization

sure you can bold the text like ā€œYou have it bad? No, I have it worse!ā€ but it’s barely noticeable and not really an option depending on where you are

this isn’t that big of a problem if you have a contraction like ā€œI’M whateverā€ or if you use italics like ā€œNo, I have it worse!ā€ but the former doesn’t work with just ā€œIā€ and the second doesn’t have the same impact as I would when capitalizing words

anyways, I gotta go eat 5000 meringues now

(you probably didn’t even notice the emphasis in that last sentence until now and i don’t blame you if you didn’t)

edit: please reread the body text before suggesting something that i already explained there (unless you’re defending why it actually works) including BOLDING ITALICS CONTRACTIONS please they’re right up there

also i love serif fonts and write ā€œIā€ with lines on paper, but i’m not willing to find some font changer to get rid of this problem online on both pc and phone (a problem that shouldn’t even exist)

This means nothing when we're talking about rotation. No matter which way you twist it, one end will be going left and the other will be going right. Just use clockwise and anti-clockwise, those phrases were invented for situations exactly like these.

Language Illiteracy Shibboleths

Post image
2.2k Upvotes

I'm talking about DEAD GIVEAWAYS that someone doesn't read words. Maybe they have basic reading skills, but I'm more talking about obvious signs that they really do not engage with words that are composed by a professional, potentially even checked by an editor.

examples:

  • Confusing homophones (they're/their/there, to/two/too)
  • Not understanding Roman numerals (yesterday I saw a post where they wrote "ww11" instead of "WWII")
  • In USD, where the established convention is writing the dollar sign before the amount, writing the dollar sign after the amount
  • Trying to pluralize a word using apostrophes (eg "guy's" when they mean "guys")

inb4 I'm elitist, if reading is an elitist skill we're cooked. You can pick up any periodical, book from the library, or if you're reading this now I suspect that means you have access to the internet, which contains endless journals and professionally-written content you can use to practice.

GUARANTEE a large number of whiny babies in the comments who feel called out or want to make some absurd point about how languages evolve or slang or other nonsense excuses.

LEARN TO READ.

Language When people use "He/she" instead of they

1.5k Upvotes

Genuinely, what is the point of saying "He/she" or "his/her" if the words THEY and THEM exist and can be used for any individual of unknown gender?

"Oh so what he/she is saying is that he/she woke up and got into his/her car to drive to Popeyes"

"The students must not talk at all during the oncoming test, or else he or she will fail immediately."

"We're not getting you a cat until our dog can behave. We don't want him or her to get into a fight; he or she will have to go to the vet."

JUST.
SAY.
THEY.

Language I HATE WHEN PEOPLE USE THORN (and other dead letters) IN MODERN WRITING!!!

YOUR STUPID FUCKING OBSOLETE LETTERS ARE NEVER COMING BACK NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY!!!!

Stop trying to look quirky and special by using washed-up letters that fell off 5 centuries ago. I just know every time you open a new tab, look up "thorn letter", and copy it so you can spam CTRL+V 5 times a sentence you're already fantasizing about all the replies you'll get from fellow enlightened Redditors applauding you for being such a brave trailblazer willing to buck the trends of society for your noble cause.

SHOWING OFF THAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THE OLD AS FUCK LETTERS NOBODY USES ANYMORE ISN'T A SUBSTITUTE FOR A PERSONALITY!!!!!

I know it's just a performative act because nobody actually commits to using them for more than a few months after finding out about le epic superior letters for intellectuals and deciding that this is how they'll stand out amongst the unsophisticated rabble. They get sick of having to reserve their clipboard as a dedicated thorn button, and get bored when they realize that it's common ball knowledge at this point and nobodies replying to them going "whoa!! What's that crazy weird b-looking character you keep using?? How am I supposed to read it, I've never seen such a thing! Could such a learned and unique individual such as yourself deign to spare the time to grant an ignorant plebian like me but a shred of your vast wisdom???"

THE WORST PART IS MOST OF YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO USE IT! YOU JUST USE þ IN PLACE OF ANY "TH" EVEN WHEN IT SHOULD BE ð!! AND IF YOU DO USE BOTH THEN THAT'S EVEN WORSE BECAUSE THAT MEANS YOU'RE GOING BACK AND FORTH TO COPY AND PASTE EACH ONE BETWEEN EVERY USE- OR YOU'RE ICELANDIC WHICH IS EVEN MORE CRINGE!!!! FUCK YOU!!!!!!!

Language I hate when people try to make insults into the next "n-word"

Thumbnail
gallery
1.4k Upvotes

If you want to ask people not to use slurs, or other insults, you know, fine whatever. Understandable.

What I hate is when people abbreviate the word and act like it's as bad as the n-word. Like, holy shit that is dumb, there will never be any word that is even close to as bad as that word. The n-word encapsulates centuries of pain for an entire community. There is an will never be any equivalent and any attempt to do so just feels wrong; like people are trying to exploit its history in an attempt to give more moral weight to their pet activist agenda.

Just say the word. If you think it's bad for someone to use the word 'retarded' then just say that. I'm so sick of seeing 'r-word' and other abbreviations of words to avoid even mentioning an insult, even in a strictly neutral manner.

Language When people add the number in brackets next to the number in words

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

Examples:

"Two (2) is the only even prime number"

"I'm going to Popeyes in about three (3) days"

"No episode spoilers are allowed on this subreddit until seven (7) days have passed."

"Some YouTube ads can be skipped after five (5) seconds, while others cannot be skipped. Unskippable ads usually range from six (6) seconds to around twenty (20) seconds."

What's the point? If you're typing the number in words, why write it twice? I sorta understand if it's so other languages can view it, but people just do it generally. Why?

Language I hate fonts that mix Latin and Cyrillic letters

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

You often see this in media set during the Cold War to look cool and edgy. But as someone who's fluent in both English and Russian, trying to read this feels like my brain is short circuiting. Sometimes it takes me a while to figure out which language to read it in because my brain just mixes the two languages together.

The line in the middle says "COLD WAR", but my brain interprets it as "CFLD SHDYA". Because that's what happens when you put a Russian F (Ф) in there just because you think it looks like an O.

Language I hate the "I ain't reading allat" mindset

1.5k Upvotes

I was reminded of this today. I absolutely hate how low attention spans have gotten that it's lead to this! The "I'm not reading all that" started as a way to dismiss when someone forces you to read a long paragraph when talking to them, i.e with like, people who text too long and can't concisely say stuff. It was meant to be funny and ribbing between friends.

Now it has become a way for people to just...be a brat. Like you are *choosing* to engage in a community, CHOOSING to comment, choosing to waste energy on... what? Flexing your bad attention span? Showing you have no literacy?

Like you have to make a conscious choice to engage with something someone put work into, and just go "I ain't reading allat" Congrats, you wasted precious seconds of your life on that. For like, two seconds of dopamine. Maybe a few minutes if the creator/other commenters respond.

It's up there with ragebaiters tbh, like you have nothing better to do? You're a child, at that point. Like *especially* if the creator includes a freaking TLDR.

Language i HATE, i DESPISE, how uncommon knowledge of linguistics is across the general population (body text filled with anger and wrath)

1.0k Upvotes

ACTUAL hate post

HATE, let me tell you how much I’ve come to HATE the general public unawareness of basic linguistic concepts.

I’ve legitimately told so many people that my area is linguistics and most people DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS, ā€œoh so you study literature?ā€ NO YOU TWAT THATS NOT WHAT LINGUISTICS IS

LINGUISTICS IS THE SCIENCE OF LANGUAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And you know whose fault this is? The school system, I know NOWHERE on earth where the school curriculum even MENTIONS linguistics, it’s an area of science like any other, why do people not even KNOW what it’s ABOUT??? During mandatory school years people go through the superficial contents of SO MANY AREAS, yet, NO LINGUISTICS, people know the basics of biology, mitochondrias and shit, people know the Pythagorean theorem, people know the water cycle, people know newton’s laws, but when the word PHONEME is uttered people look at me like I’m SPEAKING CHINESE.

Semantics, word classes, phonetics, syntax, can we KILL the school system PLEASE.

The ONLY thing people learn in school related to linguistics is grammar, and they dive SO deep into grammar and NOTHING else, for NO reason, it’s already better than nothing but HOLY SHIT. I LOOK CRAZY WHEN I SAY THERE ARE MORE THAN 5 VOWELS, ARE PEOPLE SO DENSE THAT THE CONCEPT OF WRITING≠SPEAKING DOESN’T GET IN THEIR HEADS??? THEY TAKE LINGUISTICS LIKE ITS SOME SORT OF NERDY HOBBY AND NOT AN ACADEMIC AREA THAT CAN BE AS ELABORATE AS ANY OTHER SCIENTIFIC SPECIALITY. PEOPLE WILL EITHER CALL ME CRAZY OR HAVE THE EUREKA OF THEIR LIVES WHEN THEY REALISE S AND Z ARE THE SAME FUCKING SOUND, BUT FOR ONE YOU USE YOUR VOCAL CHORDS AND FOR THE OTHER YOU DONT, A CONCEPT AS BASIC AS CONSONANT VOICING IS COMPLETELY, BEYOND COMPLETELY, IT IS UNFATHOMABLY FOREIGN TO 99% OF THE POPULATION. IVE HAD UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS NOT FUCKING BELIEVING ME.

OH RIDDLE ME THIS BATMAN, EVER REALISED THE H IN HUMAN AND THE H IN HAND ARE TWO DIFFERENT BLOODY SOUNDS? THOSE ARE CALLED ALLOPHONES YOU DENSE FUCK, BEYOND SUPERFICIAL CONCEPT IN LINGUISTICS, THIS SHOULD BE AS COMMON KNOWLEDGE AS TECTONIC PLATES OR THE SOLAR SYSTEM, WHY IS THERE SUCH A STRONG BIAS AGAINST LINGUISTICS????

OH THATS SO CUTE THAT YOU STUDY LINGUISTICS, HOW ABOUT YOU STUDY REAL SCIENCE HUH??? IM GONNA TWEAK THE FUCK OUT.

I AM A FUCKING SCIENTIST, IM JUST STUCK IN THIS SHIT AREA, BECAUSE SOMEONE WONT GET OFF OF THEIR FAT FUCKING ASS, AND MAKE LINGUISTICS EVEN A LITTLE BIT MORE TAUGHT IN SCHOOL CURRICULUMS!!!

Thank you for coming to my ted talk

I hate hearing it. I hate debates around it. I hate the rules surrounding it. I hate ā€œjokesā€ about it, ā€œI’m gonna say itā€. I hate hearing it in ā€œfriendlyā€ terms (i’m black). I wish it were something that could be left in the past, but people won’t let it go. I don’t want to write the word (but I’m pretty sure you know which one I’m talking about. The rapper word). I'll preface this by saying I'm an American MIGRANT who's lived overseas for the past 7 years.

I am NOT AN EXPAT. I am no different from people moving to America or Europe for a better life who get called Migrant, which seems to be a dirty racist dog whistle these days.

I AM A MIGRANT. I MOVED AWAY FROM THE US FOR A BETTER LIFE. WHY SHOULD I BE CONSIDERED AN EXPAT JUST BECAUSE OF WHERE IM FROM?

No, you're not super smart or knowledgeable for calling it a "murder" of crows or a "parliament" of owls. They're just flocks. Giving them a name that applies to such a small subsection of creatures requires an unnecessary amount of specificity and actually loses information in relating them to birds. I've seen all sorts of silly groups for zebras and otters, we need to stop inventing cute new terms and stick with herd/pack/flock etc.

Language The sexualization of "mommy" and "daddy"

Need i say more? Mommy and daddy are things that children call their parents. Isn't it weird how those words are so sexualized now? I called my parents mommy and daddy as a kid, and I bet you did too.

So why is it an innuendo now? It almost feels like sexualizing the relationship a child has with their parents. Mommy and daddy are words from childhood, that children use, so it's weird to me that now it's so sexual. Especially daddy.

Maybe I'm the weird one for pointing this out, but it really does annoy me.
