Help Thread The Imperial Council - /r/eu4 Weekly General Help Thread: October 12 2026
Please check our previous Imperial Council thread for any questions left unanswered
Welcome to the Imperial Council of r/eu4, where your trusted and most knowledgeable advisors stand ready to help you in matters of state and conquest.
This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your Ironman game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the master tacticians of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your Ironman save, then you've found the right place!
Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (diplomatic, political, trade, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, ideas, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, ideas, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. Calling all imperial councillors! Many of our linked guides pre-Dharma (1.26) are missing strategy regarding mission trees. Any help in putting together updated guides is greatly appreciated! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, chances are you've used the EU4 wiki and know how valuable a resource it can be. When you answer a question, consider checking whether the wiki has that information where you would expect to find it, and adding to the wiki if it does not. In fact, anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

Image Austria->Algeria->Jerusalem->HRE->Latin Empire->Roman Empire 1579
Used a little trick I saw on the Playmaker's YouTube channel and formed the biggest, baddest, earliest Rome I've ever made. Had to border gore at the end to make sure I got enough provinces from the Ottomans at the end to hit 425.
Image My Lord, they're attacking a country of our faith! We must protect them.
R5: defender of the faith defends itself when set as a co-belligerent, love this game

Advice Wanted What am I doing wrong?
R5: Going for the This is Fine achievement. I have more than 10 unrest, am the defender in a coalition war targeted against me and they have more than 30 war score. Still, the achievement isn't firing and it says a cross with "More than 30 War score". I have also had +30 war score on my side and it still gave a cross...

Humor I taught my first history class this week as a teacher trainee and was geuinely able to use EU4 as a base of understanding (the transition from the Age of Reformation to Absolutism)
The topic in particular was the results of the Reformation and how a source mentions that “rulers wanted to seize church land” to consolidate power in place of Rome. I was previously familiar with the Reformation, but the pupils further able to understand the concept of Rome’s influence being usurped now that tax could be concentrated in the hands of local rulers.
I am very happy the thousands of rebels I’ve slain while seizing Crownland has been applied to my academic studies.
Image Is this even worth it? i feel like i never benefit from the 25+ because it resets so often

Question When trying to do a WC, how valid of a strategy is it to start as the Timurids, form Mughals, conquer all of India, make it your base of wealth and power, then EXPLODE the 1600's?

Image Huh?
Orleans declared independence from france. In the peace deal, Orleans got a lot bigger and burgundy gained a couple provinces. I (England) got Maine and Auvergne (I chose to surrender Maine instead of doing the hundred years' war). ORLEANS DID NOT GET INDEPENDENCE! WTF, Paradox?

Question Naples and pope vassal nation event
The pope gets a vassalization cb on Naples if they refuse a payment event, is there a list of conditions/things that raise the chance for them to decline? I looked it up and could only find an ai response listing it was 50/50 but I’m not sure if that’s true or not. Wanted more conclusive answers. I basically want to see if I can more or less guarantee this event as it makes the pope a lot stronger in mp

Question Spain declared war then never bothered showing up
I haven't played in some time was that normal
Got into a war over Mexico, i am Japan and was declared on, i am not sure if it was the colony on my colony or Spain on my colony, anyhow me and spain
They got like 200k troops but never bothered moving any, and ended up fighting there colonial shitty troops
Spain could have stomped me with their army twice as big and bigger navy but they just let me have an easy gg
Was this normal?
Maybe they wanted to go inland into my hoard ally but couldn't
I got curious and tag switched, they have 20k stack in east coast and half the army in Sicily and only 20 transport but they were straight up chilling
I just rped it in my head as the colonies wanting the war and the king didn't bother and was like fine you guys deal with it xD

Question How can the Azteks keep declaring war on my colonial states without declaring war on me?
I'm still pretty new, only like second ever campaign. Also I play in german so i dont know how all the stuff is called in English.
Playing as England/Great Britain and i have the colonial state of British Mexiko. The Aztek Empire keeps declaring war on that state and obviously wins, but somehow I or any other of my colonial states arent involved and cant join to back BM up. The first time this happened I still had a truce with the Azteks but BM hadnt bc it was formed after the war. Now there is no truce but I still cant get involved. How and Why, please explain.
I only have the base game, no DLCs or Mods

Discussion What changes in trade would you do to make it *better*?
In my opinion, the existence of end nodes makes no sense. Trade should always be flowing somewhere. For example its especially annoying playing as Qing or Ming and not being able to divert trade from malacca to Beijing

Advice Wanted How to get most manpower by tag switching, starting as Austria?
Hi all. So as the title says, I am thinking of starting a game as Austria and really see how many nation manpower bonuses I can stack. I don’t normally do much tag switching so really unsure what to aim for, I can only think of tag switching into Russia.

Advice Wanted Sleep deprived me introduced an heir as Naples while married to 4 very large allies
Pretty sure im uber screwed because i also had a coalition that wouldnt touch me due to my allies austira england france and portugal. Its ironman mode so my first thought was to fight the coalition with my allies but were losing… but besides that, if the coalition hadnt been a thing what would have happened to me with multiple countries having a PU cb on me? would they have fought eachother over me? should i have just allowed one to get a cb on me? could i choose which? I probably would have chose england because i think i only need to defend my capital right? and they probably couldnt get all their troops to me. its 1490 if thats relevant

Advice Wanted First idea set as Georgia
I am trying (again) a run as Georgia, and it's going quite well. I annexed all of Circassia, shirvan, the two daghestani nations + the steppe up to Astrakan and most of aq qoyunlu, Trebizond is my vassal, Muscovy is my ally (I also have Cyprus, Theodoro and mushasha but they are useless right now), I spawned renaissance and all of my army is composed by 16 strelicy infantry and 4 Cossack cavalry (force limit is 20). I unlocked my first idea set and I was wondering what to chose: main treats are a big QQ (they attacked aq after I nearly killed them and took one third of their ally ajam in the process) and of course the ottomans. I am on par with ottos as for military and diplomatic tech, but due to the many cores I created admin tech is behind my neighbours. For this reason I would avoid any adm idea group for now. The economy is in shambles, so trade is tempting me, but diplo is always useful and influence/espionnage could have a role too. If not, I was thinking about taking quality just for the first tree ideas (I don't have a navy beside a single trade ship) so I don't fall behind the ottos, but even so they will probably overtake me as soon as they get renaissance too...
What would you guys suggest? I am not an expert (at 1000 hours I am yet to finish the 1444 tutorial) but I would like to keep this run going as long as possible

Achievement my take on All Blue achievement
took me quite some time, also having to fight war with 800k troops revolutionary france wasnt helping at all with their 12 morale but luckily ai is dumb, anyway had so much fun during this run

i started with alliance from both france and venice, used them to eat castille austria and part of commonwealth and to get rid of ottoblob(ottomans were incredibly strong this run, maybe i left them for too long), overextending into india superregion also took part in slowing down the process because it also increased the coalition highly, anyway i recommend this run to everyone

Advice Wanted Every game became tedious after defeating Ottomans in circa 1500.
Tried several times to do the Roma restoration achievement.
Very fun at the start of the game.
England, Austria, Byzantium, Provence. After establishing a pretty solid power base, I'd go on Ottoman and Mamlukes, releasing Bulgaria, Syria... Jerusalem for some fun. Dealing with Reformation by force convertion...
Just feels very repittive and lose interests in 1500 after I know nobody can challenge me.
Any suggestions to form into Rome in a fun-er way?
